Higher learning projects

Let's set some goals for improving the pages on Jacksonville's local colleges and universities. Basically for (relatively speaking) major schools we have UNF, JU, FCCJ, EWC, Jones College and Trinity Baptist College. My recommendations would be...

• UNF - More pictures to show a few major buildings, the landscape, etc. Possibly start a few sections about individual colleges and go from there. The article is already well-organized, but needs more substance.
• JU - Basically the same as JU.
• FCCJ - Needs organization more than anything. Also, we need pictures of the far-flung campuses, such as NAS and Cecil.
• EWC - Needs both pictures, and enough substance to require organization.
• Jones College - Same as EWC
• Trinity Baptist College - Same as UNF; someone has done some good work on this, but it lacks any pictures or logos.

Since higher ed has so many components, improving these articles will add quite a bit of synergy to other areas. For example, the NAS and Cecil articles will automatically become better with the extra content and links, and we can take pictures for multiple articles at the same time. Many of the campuses also have programs that can be referenced in other areas - for example, expanding information on UNF's Fine Arts Building (and the jazz program) will provide a destination for references to arts in the main Jacksonville article, or help to justify a "Culture of Jacksonville" article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JaxDaily (talk • contribs) 05:42, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Include adjacent counties?

I don't want to be accused of Duval imperialism :) but would it be appropriate to add adjacent counties, some or all, to Project JAX? I was working on Nassau County, Florida and thought it might be a good way to attract attention to the article. -- Rob C. alias Alarob 01:59, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Our project page does state that we have have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to metropolitan Jacksonville. By definition, that means Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, and Baker. I see nothing wrong with doing this - if we're going to improve articles relating to the Jacksonville area, the surrounding counties probably should be included. Jaxfl 22:57, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

UNF

I've expanded the article to add a section for the library and added a photo. I'm going to add some more photos and get a picture of the Arena. Hopefully I'll have the colleges expanded soon. UNF has a page with facts and info on each. nichos

Maple Leaf (shipwreck)

Hey folks. This National Historic Landmark is south of Jax, but not accessible to the public. But there are a lot of artifacts from the ship are on display at the Museum of Science & History, according to this. Julington Creek, Florida and Julington Creek Plantation, Florida

I know that St. John's county is a little out of the scope of WP JAX, but I assume that someone here will have a better idea about this than I. While categorizing articles for Wikiproject Florida, I ran across these two articles, which appear to be about the same place, but I'm not sure, and finding reliable information is proving difficult. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Zoo

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Coordinators' working group

Need to look at Timucua Tribal Group to add to List of Articles

There is a group the Native American Tribal Republic of Timucua that is claiming to be of Timucua heritage through their oral history and is seeking to gain recognition as a Timucua tribal group and to create an organization to preserve Timucua heritage. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. Added lots of photos, please check articles

Hi all, I added lots of photos but would like someone to check the articles to make sure I'm following the correct format. The pages I added the photos to are:

• Mount Zion AME Church (Jacksonville, Florida)
• Plaza Hotel (Jacksonville, Florida)
• Morocco Temple
• Duval County Courthouse
• Masonic Temple (Jacksonville, Florida)

Jaguars Article

I'm new to this Wikiproject, but I've been editing articles in relation to the Jaguars for some time now and have noticed that the main Jacksonville Jaguars article currently has no assessment of importance and is rated a start-class on the quality scale. May I suggest assigning it High importance and bumping it up to C-class? Thank you DragonFury (talk) 03:21, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Article assessment

The Jacksonville articles by quality template is badly outdated; most stub & unassessed entries have not been looked at or updated since October 24, 2007. Dozens of articles have been improved beyond stub. I'm going to take a run through them and provide a current date and assessment, but I'm not going to rate importance. Ortega is no longer a stub/new member!

Can an administrator remove the stub status? I have expanded that article significantly with pictures and paragraphs. I will work on other articles with which I am familiar later.

Also: please include me in your group. Username is jsimms3, I am very new to Wiki editing (this was my first time, and I am not a CS major so coding is basic for me). I grew up in Ortega and now attend college in Atlanta. If any Metrojacksonville members are here, Ennis Davis or anyone, please post some of your awesome pictures. For the Ortega article, I wanted to use your pictures for the town center buildings of Ortega, but could not due to permitting issues.

Renaming some articles

I like the thought of describing Ortega and Avondale, etc as historic districts and labeling them as such and talking about their history, but can we rename the articles something along the lines of Ortega (neighborhood) or Ortega (Jacksonville) because nobody is going to see these articles if they are trapped in the title Ortega Historic District and cannot currently be googled easily.

If we want people checking out Jax stuff, we need to simplify articles and make sure they pull up on Google and Wikipedia easily. For instance, someone titled the William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor page that, and it would be so much better and easier to find if it were titled simply William Astor or William Waldorf Astor, and then he can be talked about as the 1st Viscount Astor in the body.

Also, limiting the article to the name of "Ortega Historic District" limits the neighborhood boundary so much, that is it reasonable to talk about what's really Ortega? Having grown up in the neighborhood in a pre-war home, I am well adept to the history, but my life revolved around FYC and TCC and friends along the river and in Ortega Terrace, all of which are not really in the "historic district." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsimms3 (talk • contribs) 20:53, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

I believe "Ortega" is called "Old Ortega Historic District" because that's how it's listed in the National Register of Historic Districts, part of the National Register of Historic Places. I think listing articles under how the subject appears in the National Register can be counterproductive, but it needs to be mentioned somewhere in the article. --Cúchullain ^t/c 13:49, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Citation Question

Just noticed a citation stub requesting sources for Current Notable Residents of Ortega, and I inputted that data just like many other neighborhood Wiki articles have similar sections and I just know this information from growing up literally down the street from these people. It's fairly common knowledge, so how the heck do we cite this information? The Buckhead article includes Elton John as a resident (which is common Atl knowledge) and no citations, but I don't see any notes on that site about needing citations for that info.

The standard inclusion criteria is verifiability, not truth. You need to find a reliable source discussing the material, or else it can't be included, as it would be your own research. Jacksonville articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Jacksonville articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Jacksonville Transportation Authority

I have updated the bus route information on the Jacksonville Transportation Authority page as the last batch was outdated (had routes listed from when FSCJ was still FCCJ). I will take a better focus on the page as it does need to be properly expanded. If there are any others that can contribute, that would be greatly appreciated. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Florida Chapter? Jacksonville Chapter? North Florida Chapter?

Do we have enough active wikipedians in Florida to form a chapter? I've created an entry for Florida at the Wikimedia United States Chapters Council page. If a state-wide chapter will be too unwieldy, perhaps chapters based on the larger cities could be formed (i.e., South Florida, central Florida, northern Florida). -- Donald Albury 21:05, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Florida

It has been suggested that WikiProject Florida and some of its child projects might be inactive or semi active and it may be beneficial to add them to the supported projects list of WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project page and talk page of this project it appears that there are a few edits here and there but it seems to be fairly slow.
