Improper use of Infobox port

I started a discussion on Village Pump about the improper use of {{Infobox port}} for border crossings, e.g. Peace Arch Border Crossing. The discussion hasn't garnered much interest there and I wondered if here might be a better place?

A port is a place with water where ships transfer to/from the shore orother ships. A port of entry is an entirely different beast. Some ports are also ports of entry, but not all ports of entry (which would include airports) are ports.

My proposal is to fork the Infobox port to {{Infobox POE}}, removing some port-specific params (depth/draft being the most obvious) and then manually tidy up all the POEs to separate them from then ports. Or perhaps use a bot if it is easy to create a list of targets somehow.

I don't think {{Infobox border}} works here as it is designed for an interface between 2 areas/countries. Ports of entry are single point locations, not a line. A border article might include a list of multiple ports-of-entry. Fob.schools (talk) 13:00, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

I agree that both {{Infobox port}} and {{Infobox border}} are not currently right for this content, but I'd check on Infobox Border to see if it can't be more easily adapted for this, or at least fork from that template, rather than Infobox port. I feel like a lot of the content you'd want at least as an option on {{Infobox port of entry}} is the same stuff that is currently the guts of Infobox border. I definitely don't like "Infobox POE" as the name though - that's way too generic and non-descript. Possibly this could even be {{Infobox border|POE=yes}} as an option. OK. I've been Bold and forked {{Infobox port}} to {{Infobox port-of-entry}} and using JWB I have moved all the articles listed here to the new format. That new format can now be adjusted if necessary. If I knew how to analyse Infobox parameter usage, I might have done it differently. It's done now anyhow. Need help with embedding "Infobox football biography" in "Infobox tennis biography" – alignment issue

Hi folks. At Béla von Kehrling, who was a a tennis, table tennis, and football player, I wanted to embed an "Infobox football biography" in an "Infobox tennis biography" like so. Having done that the embedded football infobox ended up right-aligned when it should probably be centred (?). Would anyone be able to fix the issue or tell me how to fix it? Wikidata infobox suggestions

I made a comment over at another wikiproject here, but this project seems much, much more active. I've been trying to get familiar with wikidata-enabled infoboxes, and I found a few small details that seem like they could be improved. I am unfamiliar with both templates in general and wikidata infoboxes in particular, so I'm hoping to get the chance to see how these changes might be put into action:

1. The Template:Infobox book/wikidata page looks kind of broken.

2. I notice that the original 'infobox book' contains an "affiliations" field, but that the wikidata version doesn't search for any properties to fill this field. Perhaps 'affiliation (Q46135267)' would work?

3. I notice that Template:Infobox scientist/Wikidata has a really nice property. By adding list=ubl, it presents multiple results in a property as unbulleted lists, rather than as comma-separated. This seems preferable in a lot of cases, and I don't see many other Wikidata templates that accommodate this option. Would it be easily add this functionality to others? Would it be possible to add this to the books infobox in particular?

@Jlevi: If you learn well by examining examples, you should look at some of the templates in Category:Infobox templates using Wikidata. Looking at the 'What links here' link on any template page will give you a list of articles using that template, so you can examine those.

Trying out a template either in your sandbox or in an article (but only preview the result in articles, don't save!) should give you some idea of the functionality available.

Some of these infoboxes are only demos or half-finished works, so I'll recommend Template:Infobox observatory as a good, working template to look at first.

Many of the infobox templates get their Wikidata by using Module:WikidataIB, which has lengthy (but still not complete) documentation that you might find useful in understanding how conversion to a Wikidata-enabled infobox works. The |list=ubl is documented there, and is available in any infobox that uses Module:WikidataIB.

You can experiment by editing the sandbox for the infobox (e.g. for Template:Infobox book/wikidata you can edit Template:Infobox book/wikidata/sandbox) and previewing that in articles – just add the '/sandbox' suffix in the article and preview it, but please make sure you don't save!

@RexxS: has there been any recent discussion about using infoboxes based on Wikidata for BLPs? I've seen a couple of examples where they are pulling in unsourced information, and in any case I always thought infoboxes were meant to be based on the article, not another website. @Doug Weller: The use of Wikidata in infoboxes is reasonably well established, with some 107 infoboxes in Category:Infobox templates using Wikidata. Many of these will be BLPs, especially for sportspersons. The ones that I've been alerted to recently have been experiencing problems with unsourced information, and I find that a concern. I've spent a lot of my wiki-time of the past seven years creating tools to help designers make infoboxes that meet these sort of concerns, and I'm confident that it is possible now to design infoboxes that filter out unsourced information (including things just sourced to a Wikipedia). I'm finding that more editors are now interested in pulling in information from Wikidata, and I expect that trend to grow. The best way to harness that enthusiasm, imho, is to teach them how to make a good job of that, and how to meet the concerns that other editors will have. I suppose you would expect me to take that line .

I certainly would expect most infoboxes on the English Wikipedia to only contain information available in the rest of the article, but sometimes information is missing from articles but present and sourced in Wikidata, so a Wikidata-aware infobox will show that. That should allow interested editors to quickly read the source linked on Wikidata and add more content into the body of the article. I don't expect that to happen too often on the English Wikipedia, but many smaller language Wikipedias (like Welsh) have leveraged that technique to expand very small articles into much more useful ones.

Infoboxes should not be puling in unsourced information, so if you leave a note here of any you come across, I'm sure it will get attention quite quickly. Hope that's helpful. --RexxS (talk) 14:57, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Need help regarding multi-sports club infobox or embedding option

I am struggling with sports infobox. Is there any multisport club infobox exists in wikipedia or is there any tweaks available to embed sports infobox like required in Mohun Bagan A.C. ? I need an embeding option like mentioned in WP:IEmbed but it's not working in this case. Can anyone please help me out in this. Will be thankful. Please feel free to ping me. Infoboxes for classical composers

It is now 7 years since the Infobox war ended, and maybe it is time to revisit with an open mind whether classical music composers (and only the few most notable ones) should be an exception to the simple infobox that is used for all other biographical articles. As a regular Wikipedia user and occasional editor with no axe to grind, I find this mystifying, and also rather inconvenient. I don't want to stir up another hornet's nest, but I wonder if it could be reconsidered. I think there is a general consensus among most users and editors that appropriate concise infoboxes are a very useful summary. Hyperman 42 (talk) 15:01, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Embedding in {{Infobox organization}}?

What would be needed to allow the ability to have embeddable subtemplates in {{Infobox organization}}, similar to {{Infobox person}}? I'm looking at converting a number of transclusions of {{Infobox broadcasting network}} to the template and it seems some of them will require extra parameters. Depends on exactly what you're trying to achieve. {{Infobox person}} just accepts |module= (1-6), whose value is a template itself (see meta:Help:Advanced templates), combined with the |child= param on {{Infobox}} (in the template being embedded) to suppress the title (see Template:Infobox#Embedding). If there's consensus for merging {{Infobox broadcasting network}} into {{Infobox organization}}, then you should be adding the extra parameters to the merged template. That ensures that all future needs for {{Infobox broadcasting network}} will be met by {{Infobox organization}}. The reason why {{Infobox person}} accepts modules is to enable embedding of other existing specialised templates. There really wouldn't be any point in creating a new template to embed into {{Infobox organization}} just to get rid of {{Infobox broadcasting network}}. Where do I go to have an infobox created?

I want to make a Template:Informal groups for individuals brought together due to circumstances. Specifically, I want to make an infobox for articles McDonogh Three, Richmond 34, Friendship Nine, Chicago Seven, Little Rock Nine, Panther 21, Jena Six, Mayfield Ten, Tougaloo Nine, and other similar groups.

I scanned through the Wikipedia:List of infoboxes and didn't find a box that seemed to fit my needs. Is there a way to place a request for this type of infobox? Mitchumch (talk) 23:15, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

@Mitchumch: I guess here would be as good a place as any. There are quite a few editors here who could create an infobox for you if none of the existing ones fit. What you need to do is look at a kind-of-related infobox, say Template:Infobox person. Look at all of the fields there are available in that infobox and try to work out a list of the fields you think you would need for your Template:Informal groups. Maybe use Template talk:Informal groups, the talk page, as a workspace and make sure it's linked from here. When you have written out the list of fields in the order you want them to display in an article, notify me or the folks here and I'm sure somebody will be able to create the working template from your list for you. You'll probably have to write the documentation at Template:Informal groups/doc yourself, but there are plenty of examples to mimic. Little help at Denali State Park?

The map in the infobox is useless at the currently displayed scale. Tried fooling with the code but I don't really know anything about how these work. Hi @Beeblebrox:, I think I fixed it! I had to do some digging, but I ended up finding that I needed to change the mapframe_zoom parameter for the infobox. Apparently the map is what's called a "mapframe". It looks like usually it can figure out an appropriate zoom level, but here it did not.

Feel free to adjust the mapframe_zoom value in the infobox. I set it to 3 because that looked pretty good to me, but there might be a better zoom level. All you need to do is go into edit mode on the Denali State Park page, and adjust the numeric value of the mapframe_zoom parameter in the infobox. Ali Daei

Can someone take a look at Ali Daei and help me figure out why the infobox is so wide? Also, I feel like the "Association football career" heading (part of the embedded Template:Infobox football biography) is way too large.  Bait30  ^{Talk 2 me pls?} 03:18, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

@Bait30: The reason is that part of the infobox is a table with three columns. The first column's width is set by "Playing position(s)"; the second by "Islamic Azad University"; the third by "Apps (Gls)", all of which have the "whitepace:nowrap" style applied to them. Normally, we don't force entire pieces of text into a single line in a table, and we allow the browser to wrap the text to fit the size of the table. However, Template:Infobox football biography adds the nowrap style to every cell, so it is bound to produce over-wide infoboxes as soon as any field contains more than a few characters. You'll need to remove the nowrap styling from the infobox definition to fix the problem.

The "Association football career" heading is exactly the same font-size as the main "Ali Daei" heading because Template:Infobox3cols doesn't adjust the heading font size when it is embedded. It stays at "125%", whereas Template:Infobox sets the heading to "100%" when it is embedded. --RexxS (talk) 22:09, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

RexxS, thanks for the explanation! The "Association football career" is related to the browser it seems. When looking at it in Chrome and Safari, it looks the same as the "Ali Daei" heading, but when I was looking at it on Firefox (like I was last night), it looks way bigger. @Bait30: The "Association football career" was being made bold twice: once because it's in a header, and once because it had wikimarkup for bold in its definition at Template:Infobox football biography. Most browsers ignore the double-bolding, but Firefox attempts to make the text extra-bold. I've removed the ''' from that template, so it show display in Firefox the same as in other browsers.

If you want to fix the other issues, I think you should suggest the changes at Template talk:Infobox football biography and get a consensus. I'd be happy to apply any fixes that are agreed. --RexxS (talk) 00:13, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

Please could someone add a field for funders to Infobox organization

Hi

I would like to start adding information on funders of organisations to their infoboxes with a focus on lobbying groups, astroturfing groups and think tanks, I think it will be helpful for readers to understand the groups motivations. However Template:Infobox organization doesn't currently have a field for funders. Please could someone add one for me?

New colorful template for earthquake infoboxes

Hi, I just came across a new template for earthquake infoboxes. It adds color where none existed. It uses the United States Geological Survey's colors and descriptors (the descriptors haven't changed – the user that created the template is using WP:Earthquake's preferred one-word descriptors for earthquake intensity – see Modified Mercalli intensity scale). Is the new template OK to be used broadly across the encyclopedia? Does it, ehem, violate any acceptable uses for colors or whatnot?

Tool for infobox?

Is there a tool/gadget/script for infobox formatting? I noted some edits has the alignment of parameters and = done up nicely. Is this done manually, adding all the space or using a tool so the alignment is all straight. Example of non-aligned infobox, Senoko Power Station, and aligned infobox, Energy Studies Institute. Should 'children' in people infoboxes contain only biological children, or all children (adopted, stepchildren, etc.)?

Incredibly, this infobox is missing, which should instead be the type infobox for each national team (with the possibility of adding the medaltemplates summary), which instead is present in many other Wikipedias such as this French one. Tennis-related issue with Wheelchair draws order in Event section and Infobox

I was going through the draws listed in the 2021 French Open Events section and Infobox and noticed, that the Wheelchair (WC) Quad Doubles draw was listed as the last Wheelchair draw in the end, yet the order the WC draws subsections follows is:
1. WC Men's Singles
2. WC Women's Singles
3. WC Quad Singles
4. WC Men's Doubles
5. WC Women's Doubles
6. WC Quad Doubles
It makes more sense to have the WC QD draw be listed after the quad singles so, it goes:
1. WC Men's Singles
2. WC Women's Singles
3. WC Quad Singles
4. WC Quad Doubles
5. WC Men's Doubles
6. WC Women's Doubles
which would follow the order of men's and women's singles, whose spot remains unchanged, followed by the quad singles and doubles, and then the men's and women's doubles, making the logical order: singles, quads and doubles. P.S. Also, for some reason I tried changing the aforementioned order in the infobox in source and the change, for some reason, would not show up after publishing. I open the source again and the new edit is there, but it did not register it in read view. How can I make this work properly? This would need to be agreed to at Tennis Project before any changes are made. The most likely change would be:

You think an infobox template transclusion or a template substitution is in order? Because changing the order should affect all of templates linked to that one. Or have the change affect only future events, from 2021 French Open page onwards? As for the order of the disciplines themselves I agree with this. @Qwerty284651: The current WC order seems logical to me - there are three classifications: men's, women's & quads - and we list the singles of each then the doubles. I see no reason to change that. What does need changing is the order of the different event types, currently it is:

• Seniors → Juniors → Legends → Wheelchair

I think it should be:

• Seniors → Juniors → Wheelchair → Legends

I.e. able-bodied → disabled → exhibition. This if agreed upon would affect the section order in the main tournament article, as well as the navboxes Template:Infobox tennis tournament year (on the main page) and Template:Infobox tennis tournament event (on event pages). Well I have several disagreements with his analogy. Right off the bat you list quads as if they are the same as mens and womens wheelchair. They are considered separate classes. The "Open" class is mens and womens singles and doubles wheelchair. The "Quad" class is for those with a disability in the predominant playing hand. They can use electric wheelchairs and can tape rackets to their arms. It is composed of both men and women. I feel both singles and doubles Quads class events should be after the mens and womens singles and doubles Open class events because of those differences in rules and the fact they are mixed gender. And I'm not overly fond of your able-bodied → disabled → exhibition order. I think it should be 1. professional a) able-bodied → b) disabled → 2. junior/kids → 3. exhibition. My two cents - putting the quad singles after the men and women doubles looks like it diminishes the importance of the class. Currently, the ITF is treating the three categories as equivalent. Therefore, it should either be men singles, women singles, quad singles, followed by doubles, or it could be changed to men singles, men doubles, women singles, women doubles, quad singles, quad doubles (to be clear, I think the first option is better).

On the other hand, I do agree that wheelchair classes should be above juniors. Wheelchair tennis players are professional adult athletes. Their careers span much longer than the few years someone would qualify as a "junior". So if, let's say, someone is browsing the pages of Roland Garros 2018-2021, they could notice that the same wheelchair tennis player has won X number of times. For juniors, this is not likely to happen, simply due to the age limits (they usually age out of the division before they can win multiple slams over multiple years). Agreed. If you're a pro WC tennis athlete, you'll either be in the open men's, open women's or quad events. Splitting the open and quad divisions, while there is a logic to it, would only make the order more confusing to readers who for the most part know nothing about WC tennis. It's simpler to just list the singles WC events and then the doubles.

WRT the other issue, (pro (able-bodied → disabled) → junior → exhibition) does seem the most natural ordering actually. I initiated the discussion on multiple pages to make sure it got attention, from what I can see it has. After reading through to the subsequent comments after my first one: my proposal for the WC order remains the same: Men's and women's singles, then men's and women's doubles, followed by the quad singles and doubles. As for the remaining categories I suggest: seniors → wheelchair → junior → exhibition/legends. I was reluctant, at first, to put the WC discipline above the juniors, but after much consideration I accepted the logic behind the importance of the 4 disciplines and the following it receives/has received. Have adults → juniors → legends....in that order. Let's wait for other editors to weigh in before make an edit request, because it affects all other infoboxes for other slams, as well. infobox food

Hi, in the infobox food, there is a line for 'country', which appears as 'place of origin' in the article. This caused me to enter into a brief edit war on blackpuddings, where black puddings origins lie in the British Isles but some users take umbrage at the fact it is titled 'country' in the info box, and thus edited it to reflect the two nations there, but this leaves out parts of the Isles that are not part of either nation. Black puddings (and a lot of food I would suppose) predate countries and states, is it possible to change the info box to say 'place of origin' in the edit field?Halbared (talk) 15:20, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Advice for cleanup of invalid params?

I see multiple templates have invalid params listed at Category:Infoboxes with unknown parameters. In the case of {{Infobox organization}} it was partly due to bad TemplateEditing structures, but generally also merges/improper file usage. Are there tools that are intelligent enough to detect per template, perhaps pulling from template data? I posted a similar question at Infobox organizations talk page. Political Party infobox?

A number of US State political parties are having their infobox changed from "American State Political Party" to the (more generic) "political party" which seems contrary to the purpose of having the former. Is there a movement (by this group) to eliminate the former for the latter? Is this someone not understanding the templates? I've stumbled upon the list of goldfish varieties, and having had a look at the articles for many of them, it seems someone's used a centred table/number of cells in place of an Infobox proper. I haven't checked out all of the varieties, but a sample of about four shows the same thing on each.

I'm unsure which Infobox to use in their stead; I really don't edit scientific-ish articles very often, so I don't know what justifies the use of what. I think {{Infobox species}} would be correct, but having had a look at, say, varieties of chicken - about the only comparable thing I could think of - it showed {{Infobox poultry breed}}. There doesn't seem to be a comparable Infobox fish breed, so would {{Infobox animal breed}} do the job? Or are these goldfish varieties more suited with {{Subspeciesbox}}?

Any help would be much appreciated; it doesn't seem like a hard edit to do, I just need to know I'm using the right template. Thanks! Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) 18:40, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Preventing useless maps based on Wikidata in Template:Infobox public transit accident

There's already enough pictures in the infobox here that a map is not necessary (even disregarding that entirely, the map should not be placed at the top of the infobox like that). Is there a way to disable this automatic import from Wikidata beyond the crude solution currently in use there (which is adding some random filler,  , which still impacts display...)? Or maybe one should add a |nomap= parameter which would disable this if included. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 16:52, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

Infobox whisky distillery

Hello, would anyone be able to help with some changes to Template:Infobox whisky distillery?

The first item is the addition of a second image or logo parameter so that it can display the distillery/company logo as well as a general photo of the distillery. The airport infobox or Infobox port are good examples of similar setups. I would suggest having it positioned at the top of the infobox, before the existing image parameters.

The second item would be the addition of a parameter called 'Open to the public' which could be used to indicate whether a distillery offers public tours, has a on-site shop or is closed to the public. I would imagine it being populated with either 'Yes', 'Yes (tours and shop)' (and variation thereof) or 'No'. Many distilleries in Scotland offer tours or have a shop, so it would add some value to the infobox to have this info available in a consistent manner across articles. I would suggest positioning it just before the 'website' parameter.
