80s Rock Bands...

I made an article for The Venetians the toher day which someone has listed for deletion. Now there is scarce amount on the internet for a band which had a few moderate hits and achieved national airplay at the time..To me it easiliy meets criteria for notability but I don't have any sources handy. Student union articles

By chance, I've run across some Australian student union articles, and there seems to be a large quantity of them which cover very local-interest groups, without any references or confirmation of notability. Can someone in this WikiProject please take a look, and see if there are some references available to justify these articles? If not, I recommend they be merged into a single list, or that the information simply be deleted. For a quick summary, see {{NUS}}. Thanks, Elonka 21:51, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

As a heads-up, I'm going to be going through some of the student organisation articles, and doing some cleanup which will probably involve nominating some of them for deletion. Please rest assured that I'm not intending to nominate all of them for deletion, but simply those that seem to provide no references or affirmation of notability per WP:CORP. For example: Students' Association of the University of Adelaide. I'm also thinking that some of these no-reference articles might be good to merge to a Wikia, such as at the Australia Wikia. Australia 21

I haven't found where the word "grandchildren" comes from yet, but the article is basically a copyright violation. The introduction comes from the Australia 21 brochure. The section under "Activities" is lifted from http://australia21.org.au with the only differences being changing "us" and "we" to "it". The "four thematic programs" are also lifted word-for-word from the website, but I haven't found the sub points yet. Oh yeah, found them. They come from the website as well. I was browsing through the category tree and found a couple of curious cats. For example in Category:Underpopulated Australia categories:

• Category:Australian astronauts I suppose this will sufficiently populated - eventually.
• Category:School massacres in Australia Goodness! Delete please.
• Category:Picken family The Amcor people
  
• Category:Assassinated Australian politicians It has been requested that this category be populated. Wow, pretty harsh!

The Category:Indian Wikipedians contains a template for Indian Australians, but should it be in Category:Australian Wikipedians.

Category:Australian terrorists

I've removed several articles from the category, as the subjects were still under trial or weren't charged or convicted, as per WP:BIO. I think your criticism stands and we need to consider whether the cat. should remain. And what about Category:Terrorism in Australia? I think Category:Terrorism in Australia is a much better category, because it removes the idea that we are classifying people as "terrorists", and instead only refers to actual acts of terrorism (which are much more easily defined). Just to continue, in the Category:Terrorism in Australia page, there are some questionable inclusions. The Battle of Broken Hill (for which there are two pages, redirect needed), seems to have some OR; Henry James O'Farrell (assassination, not terrorism); Douglas Wood (Australian captured by "terrorists," (insurgents?), but not in Australia). <--- That's the issue with these type of categories, is that they become broad and contain both positive and negative entries about the topic. Australian Arts & Literature

I can't seem to find any specifc Australian arts & literature focus here, which is a big omission. I am wondering what people think about setting the category up as a new WikiProject. I think that it is a large enough area to have it's own project, which could then be divided up into task forces for different categories, such as film, theatre, novels etc etc. I think this would make the the subject area more accessible and make the work load seem more manageable. Australian Poetry (+ parent WP Poetry)
Australian Novels (+ parent WP Novels)
Australian Writers (+ parent WP Biography + sister Writers & critics work group

If you look very carefully -to see how projects can be created - Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Territory started this week - Considering the labour of love of a very few editors to sustain Oz lit in the last year or so - I would recommend against taskforces and just one project is enough really - too ambitious and you wont get any help - theres limited as there is - scale down the ambitions and the projecct is more likely to survive - just my fifty cents. Organic semiconductors, an Australian invention?

Others got the credit and the 2000 Nobel prize. However, over a decade before, the first high conductivity organic polymers had been reported by an Australian group. In fact, the Noble winner's work was essentially a reprise of the Auzzies'. See Organic semiconductor.19:42, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Probably not. The combined total of articles within the Powderfinger category structure is a mere 35. This falls far short of our smallest active WikiProjects. The project also appears to be using the category tree referred to above as a media gallery, possibly violating fair usage. You're welcome to also create an Australian Music project; it would have my full support. However, since the council was happy with it, and haven't taken any action on it, I don't think action in closing this project should be taken (unless, as said by the project, it flops...which is not something new for wikiprojects). Sandbox

Seems he does templates for WikiProjects User:ACBest/Sandbox, but the admins really need to decide if editors should be allowed to do this, as its sure messes up the Categories with incorrect links. If everyone done this it would create havoc in the end and could become a form of vandalism to Project Categories. Thats why i mentioned it here. Boylo 02:15, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

I've done the same myself while fiddling with the WP Australia template. This particular page has been active now for 5 days. Leaving it as is only populates useful categories with unwanted junk.

As the template hasn't had any custom changes made to it in the users sandbox, it's something he can easily recreate if needed again. I'll delete the offending page and leave an explanation at their talk page as to why. -- Longhair\^talk 06:11, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Tax Return (Australia)

I found it's incorrectly stating that taxpayer with taxable income MUST lodge tax return.

Actually, NOT everyone has taxable income need to lodge a tax return. Say, here[1] you can find the reasons for an individual to lodge an income tax return.

This simply defines Potch as "to push" or "to thrust" with no other details, but has "buy opals" adverts around it. It's starting to look like there should be an article about Opal mining in Australia which rounds up these terms, and adds in social history, economics and criticism of this industry. Location map Australia

I've just made a pushpin map for Australian locations. So if you give the co-ordinates, a location map will be generated, so separate static images for each location are not needed. For example:

class=notpageimage| Sydney: using co-ordinates on article...

...and the static image.

The parameters are probably not yet spot-on, so if you want to tweak them, go to {{Location map Australia}}. Once this is running properly, it could possibly be then used for the location infobox - or anything else for that matter. - 52 Pickup 17:58, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Donald Bradman FA drive - request for help

Hi. Two of the cricket WikiProject are leading a drive to get the Don to FA status. Help gratefully welcomed. We're both Poms, so some Aussie scrutiny would be particularly useful. Particularly, (re Popular culture section) I'm wondering if Bradman's name is popularly used by Aussies as a metaphor for excellence. Database dumps now available on BP Files

Great news for editors who want a local copy of the wiki database, but have problems downloading through Bigpond due to limited plans. Bigpond Files now have copies of the August dumps, and are an "Unmetered" download for Bigpond DSL and Cable customers. See Bigpond Files site for details. Northbridge, New South Wales

Some of the information in Northbridge, New South Wales looks less than the best to me. For instance, Amazon doesn't seem to have heard of William Berkman, despite him writing at least three books (and founding a church). Could a local cast an eye over the article? Category:Australian engineers

What definition of engineer is being used for this category please? Does the category distinguish between a professional engineer and a mechanic for example? If not, should the category be changed to "Australian professional engineers", or is it accepted that "engineer"=="professional engineer"? The common definition of a professional engineer is someone who is eligible for membership of the The Institution of Engineers Australia. John Dalton 01:30, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Looking higher up the category tree is Category:Engineers which "categorises articles related to the occupation of engineer". Its parent category is Category:Engineering which gives the definition: "Engineering is the practical application of science. This is accomplished through knowledge, mathematics, and practical experience applied to the design of useful objects or processes. Query on possible article

I'm about to make my first trip to Australia. I'll spend some time at the Reef Casino in Cairns. We have articles on the Star City Casino and the Crown Casino, which are certainly bigger and more important. Now back in the Northern Hemisphere, I can report that the Reef Casino is smaller, in physical size and in the size of the typical bet, than I'd expected. It's definitely nowhere near the level of Star City or Crown. I'm therefore inclined to agree with Giggy that we don't need an article. Recurring dreams's suggestion of an article about "the financial machinations" of the industry would be a good idea, but as a casual visitor, I don't feel qualified to take it on. Scrub Monkey

Please have a look at the article Scrub Monkey. Is it a hoax, or is there actually some Australian legend about the "Scrub Monkey"? I checked every resource available to me but could not find any relevant information. The fact that a few of the contributors to the article are known vandals makes me even more suspicious that this is a hoax. Dealing with Proposed Deletions (WP:PROD)

Initially I had added a Proposed Deletions section to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Australia. This addition was removed by Thewinchester with the edit summary:

(→Deletion nominations via WP:PROD - rem unnecessary section, also is messing with Christ G Bot that updates the deletions lists on WP:AWNB)

After this, I went to this page to add WP:PROD notifications. As you can see above, I was subsequently told that I should take these to WP:AWNB. I went to that page and looked at the code and noted that every section is bot-filled ... and that a primary source of material for the bot is Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Australia, the page I started at and I was told not to add information to. There are two related questions here:

1. Are you interested in knowing about articles that have been proposed for deletion via the WP:PROD workstream?
2. If you are, where should such notifications - or what notification collection method - would fit best into this WikiProject's business-as-usual?

Geobox

Hi, I'm no particularly involved with anything Australian, I'm just the major creator of the {{Geobox}} template, a template for all geography-related features. Among its many functions there's an automated locator dot placement based on coordinates - if there exists a calibrated map the template places a locator dot automaticaly. And that's how I got here, I'm creating these calibration templates for other countries and regions as well and somehow I stumbled upon Australia, so here you are here, I've tried one on Uluru. The {{Geobox}} template can be used for towns, cities, mountains, lakes … whatever you like.

The map shown at Uluru consists of two parts, a background map and an svg overlay (the states' and territories' boundaries). Of course, only the former could be used or the former with boundaries included in it. This system is useful for placing overlays of mountain ranges, national parks. See e.g. Greater Fatra and Veľká Fatra National Park which share the same backgound map but the overlays are different.

A couple of data that were scattered throughout the page can be included in the Geobox as well. E.g. the Geolinks template didn't do anything different to what's achived by the coordinates_type field in the template. Of course, should you not like the Geobox, get rid of it, this is just to let you know it exists. – Caroig (talk) 13:50, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Vodafone Australia

I'd like to make a request for someone to start an article for Vodafone Australia. Surprisingly, no article currently exists for this company. Most Australia-related articles link to either the parent company, Vodafone (based in the UK), or simply link to a non-existant article. Most countries with their own "Vodafone" partner or subsidiary company have their own article (e.g., Vodafone New Zealand), with information relevant to that country. I didn't feel up to the job of creating the article myself, after having seen the articles for Telstra, Optus and Virgin Mobile Australia, so I decided to make a request here. Western Australia infoboxes help please

Hi, I hope someone can help me in the name of disambiguation link repair. There are a number of Western Australia articles which link to Wa, which is a disambiguation page, the links seem to be coming from infoboxes on the articles, and I don't know enough about how the templates work to fix the links! I think the problem is that the parameter "wa" is used for Western Australia. Is there anybody here who could fix them please? It would be very much appreciated. For some reason a hidden, non-visible link is being created to a lower-case version of the state abbreviation. I know where that is getting input (the {{{state}}} field). Project bot work

A while back we discussed ways we can improve the project and template to make it easier to get things done. I've submitted a request for a bot to total the article counts within the maintenance categories we use here and to output the results to a table. I suspect the table would function similar to the many others in use in allowing us to track backlogs at a glance. The result for now is below...

Category:Australia stubs || 803 gives a false sense of satisfaction while there are 26 subcategories of it, some of those with further subcats. Assessment subpages

The Requests and Disputes sections are all but abandoned at the present time. No new requests have been lodged there for months, and similarly, those that have been lodged in 2007 have remained unattended to. What should we do regarding this? Given the amount of assessment going on, it doesn't seem to be a problem at all and definitely does not reflect a lack of attention to assessment, but maybe the current situation is a sign that we need to retire these pages so that newer users don't get confused. Have to agree - at the moment their unloved status can only confuse newcomers. Perhaps re-direct the links in Template:WPAustralia Navigation to the noticeboard as well as tagging them {inactive}. New requests are posted, if you look at the history you can see the activity which is several per month. However completed requests are removed, so it gives it that blank looking appearance. Most of the requests are to get upgrades in the class, and also some want their importance changed! Graeme Bartlett 21:35, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Question about a copyright

Category:Historians of Australia

Hello, I was just working on sorting & organizing Category:Historians by field of study, and discovered, to my great surprise, that there was no category for Historians of Australia. I then proceeded to search through the Australian categories, and found that you do have Category:Australian historians -- but that's merely their nationality, not an indication of what they write about. So I have gone ahead and created Category:Historians of Australia, with 3 parent categories.

I've tagged a couple of articles for people I happen to know, but rather than expending my own time going through each of the articles in Category:Australian historians to determine which of them also belong in Category:Historians of Australia, I will leave that in your hands, since in most cases I presume a glance at the name will be enough. I seem to have been the only reviewer for the past while, and have to agree. Articles there are just not getting a wide enough look. The edit history of Dunny suggests that it's of great interest to preteen contributors, surprise surprise. It ought to be on the watchlists of several people with a mental age of twelve or over.
