Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Media upload of images from Guinea-Bissau and Senegal

Dear project members,

I would like to draw your attention to a media upload that may be of relevance to your project. The African Studies Center, Leiden University, donated 756 images made by Roel Coutinho, a Dutch MD working in Guinea-Bissau and Senegal between 1973 and 1974. The images show aspects of daily life such as food preparation, festivities and school and hospital buildings, among other things. The metadata (including Portuguese captions) were prepared by Michele Portatadino, the upload was done by Hans Muller using the GWToolset.

Eponymous African ideologies

Has anyone noticed that we have articles for Garveyism, Mobutism and Sankarism but not for Fanonianism, Lumumbism or Nkrumaism? Aren't those eponymous political ideologies just as important? Charles Essie (talk) 02:22, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

List of universities in Tanzania is not exhaustive

New universities such as Mwenge Catholic University in Moshi is still listed as a university college. Similarly Moshi Univesiy College of Co-operative Studies should be listed as a fully fleged university.

Valuable source of new images on Commons

Just wanted to draw people's attention to the new deposit of images on commons from the collection of ETH-Zurich in Switzerland which (however improbably) has a large number of really useful photos of Africa (especially Ethiopia and former French West Africa). Unfortunately they're largely uncategorised and their captions are in German which makes it difficult to work with. Book fund

I propose that we launch Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Book fund. Any editor in Africa or worldwide who wants a book/journal or resource to contribute to wikipedia they list the books they want by user name there. We run a series of contests in the new year, run by people within Africa, but inspired by some of my contest models. People who contribute to them can then be given the chance to win the books that they want. They can then use books to contribute to future contests or future article work independently, so books won in one contest could be used to contribute to a Wiki Loves Women contest later etc. So it serves as a double investment in content long term. Alternatively/additionally, editors could work together as a team and work on winning book resources for their own wikiprojects and build up resource material, with a sort of library service giving books out to editors who want them. Editors not interested in financial gain for themselves, but very interested in African development can compete in the contests and donate their winnings to a given wikiproject/country, and then they buy books which editors demand and hand them out. So say a new student editor from Nigeria or something wanted to buy a book from Amazon worth £90 or something but couldn't afford it due to course fees, using the fund he could request the book and contribute using it etc..

I can see that being very useful in some circumstances. I've found that a lot of anti-apartheid activists and trade unionists in South Africa are covered by books that exist only as snippet view on Google Books. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:35, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Each African country could have its own section. Say MLG you want a book which documents some of those women from South Africa, you list the book under South Africa with the price. When a contest is held whoever wins a few hundred dollars can choose to buy some books for a few different people who need them and keep some to buy for themselves, or you can earn the books yourself by contributing etc. And you could stage contests based on the books in demand as prizes, so make people produce work for it so get the books they want etc..♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:20, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, if the prize fund was large enough that could easily be covered Islahaddow. Couple of suggestions - what can be done with existing resources, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request and more generally Wikipedia:Reference desk and Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library? Some projects operate more specialist versions of the same, with a collective list of books etc. Ebooks where available would obviously help with the postage issue. And are individual Wikipedians the right "host" for this kind of thing? Would it be better done in collaboration with a local public/university library, so that once bought, the book doesn't "disappear" into a private bookshelf but is more publicly available? Obviously that won't work for some, perhaps the Wikipedian could have the book for a while then pass it on to a library or something? Le Deluge (talk) 13:47, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

The Temminck Groll Collection consists of 2,641 historical photographs taken by the Dutch architect and architectural historian Coen Temminck Groll (1925-2015). The photos were taken in regions with which the Dutch have had historical relations, including countries in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia (see the category description for a full listing). The photos were taken during Temminck Groll's travels and study of 'shared cultural heritage' (heritage of the Netherlands located outside the country’s borders) and mainly date to the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs were digitised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and made available to Wikimedia Commons in the context of the project The Netherlands and the world. Invitation to help improve and translate in other languages 16 biographies about African women

In the run up to International Women’s Day on the 8th March, Wiki Loves Women is launching the on-Wikipedia translated drive #16WikiWomen : m:16 African Women Translate-a-thon

The idea is for Wikipedians to take 16 days to translate the Wikipedia biographies of 16 notable African women, into at least 16 languages (African and/or international languages).

The articles to be translated will be the biographies of African women. The list of language can be, but is not limited to:

• International languages: Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, German
• African languages: Akan, Afrikaans, Igbo, Hausa, Wolof, Tswana, Zulu, Xhosa, Shona, Swahili, Yoruba, Sudanese, Amharic, Tsonga, Ewe, Sesotho, Chichewa

The list of the 16 women biographies that will be translated are:

RfC "The Gambia" or "the Gambia"

It has been six years since this discussion ended with no consensus. Since then Categories are consistently named "...of the Gambia" or "The Gambia..." Some articles use "of The Gambia": Embassy of The Gambia, London, National Library of The Gambia. While others use "of the Gambia": History of the Gambia, Demographics of the Gambia.

I would like to settle this once and for all. The country enjoys a lot more internet access now and we should now be able to reach a consensus. Please join the discussion at the Is it "The Gambia" or "the Gambia" in the middle of a sentence.—አቤል ዳዊት^?(Janweh64) (talk) 03:07, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Frustrating

Frustrating. Obviously we want the same coverage for Africa as elsewhere but for a lot of villages you'd be lucky to find a population figure, let alone any real information. Rather than zillions of short stubs, perhaps it would be best to only have articles for localities which actually have a few sources with info aside from population at the moment. Create articles for all the communes/municipalities but then create lists of villages in each one with the population in brackets. I might start redirecting a lot into the municipalities. There's no point in having tons of articles if all of them are generic with xxx is a village, In 2002 it had xxx. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:57, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

@Aymatth2: What shall I do? Obviously we want to cover everywhere and have the same coverage in Africa as elsewhere but for the majority of rural localities it's just population available. Which is best do you think, list them with population in brackets in the municipality like Diouloulou until one has enough info for a proper stub. Or short ones like Aïnoumane but the same generic population and nothing else? I think it's probably best to just create the municipality articles for now and clean those up as they'll mostly have at least some facts. The larger villages if they have some more facts I think it's worth having new entries like Kabiline. But I'm kind of sick of categories for Africa often having a few hundred villages and most of them containing the xxx types entries. For Senegal for instance it would be better to have 300 odd half decent start class articles on all the communes and rural communities first I think, and make them more consistent rather than 14,000 short stubs on villages!.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:48, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

• I see no problem with stub village articles like Aïnoumane. The stub gives the population, time zone and commune and shows the place on the map, all useful information, and links to the satellite view. Possibly more information will turn up later, and the stub gives a place to add it. Maybe a famous person was born there. Or it may stay a stub forever. I would not bother to create a stub like this myself, but think it is marginally more useful than a list entry. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:32, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

I see it both ways. If you really think long term we're better off having individual articles, even if just population data I think as undoubtedly over time things will improve. • If you are going to create village stubs, you may want to contact User:Lsj for automated assistance. He has created a bot that, among other things, can extract NASA data for a location including type of vegetation, population density and monthly temperatures and rainfall. • @Lsj: That looks very useful. Has this possibility for the English WP been discussed elsewhere? I can see huge potential, but perhaps am missing potential drawbacks. A stray thought is that it might be useful to separate the stub framework from the content, which would be included as a "template". Generate the framework once, but keep the option to regenerate content, which may change from time to time. Thus:

This would support embedding bot-generated content in existing articles, and would allow editor-written text to be added to bot-generated articles, while giving the option to periodically replace the embedded bot-generated content with more up-to-date content and/or more complete content. Things like temperatures, rainfall and vegetation may change periodically, and demographic information may change quite often. Thoughts? Aymatth2 (talk) 13:17, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

I am not aware of any such discussion on enwp. It has been discussed extensively on svwp, though. The potential is indeed huge, which is what gained consensus for the project (and gained svwp 2nd place in the wiki league ), but there are drawbacks and objections. Objections that people have raised in those discussions include:

• Possible quality issues with the sources used. Source data are not perfect, and the bot may unwittingly include errors.
• Some people question the relevance of 100,000 stubs about villages in Africa.
• Maintenance and updating becomes a challenge.
• The articles are too uniform, boring to read. The "random article" function is no fun anymore on svwp.
• The bot does a fair bit of analysis and calculations, and then translates the results into text. So the bot needs to answer the question "how flat is flat", in order to write "The terrain around X is flat." Some people argue that this violates WP:ORIGINAL, or is bad in some other way.

The frame/content split that you suggest is an interesting idea, but not entirely trivial to implement, as the bot articles are not all identical. A template-based framework would require either lots of different templates, or some very complex ones. Lsj (talk) 14:06, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

• @Lsj: My use of word "template" was misleading. I would have the bot generate text just as it does today, but spread the text over three files per article: the frame and the two "templates". So the file "Bot generated/Xyz Village environment" just holds the text describing the environment of Xyz Village, to be embedded in the article on Xyz Village. There could be value in writing a small, very generic template with a name like "botcontent" and one unnamed parameter giving text type, which would use the article name to find and return the bot-generate text file. So {{botcontent|environment}} would return the text in file "Bot generated/&articlename; environment" if present, null if not present. Something like that.

I think this deserves a broader discussion though. The approach, applied to common classes of articles using different bots, would be a fairly radical shift from editor-written text alone to editor-written text plus content aggregated from other databases, or purely aggregated content in many cases. As long as the content is useful with the coordinates/map/population and some other gleaned facts I'd strongly encourage it. While it's true it will increase maintenance size, a lot of articles are going to be created by Africans coming online in the next few years, so better to set something up which is consistent and clean and then can be built upon, rather than being a huge task for people to attempt. @Lsj: I would fully support you doing this for Senegal as a start. Just my two cents here, but don't forget about the people. Including stub articles for small villages encourages people to contribute to the Wiki knowledge base of those villages. It gives a platform onto which young wikipedians can easily build and gain experience. Imagine the excitement if a member of a small village (for instance one who received a scholarship and immediate access to the resources of the internet; or one who newly discovered wikipedia on a cheap mobile phone over a wireless connection) discovers that his village has a wikipedia page! They would see the lack of info compared to their personal lived experiences, and, if enticed enough, would want to contribute. Having stub articels as "placeholders" with basic info already there, would make it a lot easier for new wikipedians to contribute on topics close to them, like their village. I have found that having such a basic platform in place makes it a lot easier to engage with a wider audience, especially when trying to source information. I hope you understand what I mean. It would be great to have rich, engaging articles, but they have to start somewhere if they are going to start at all. Janneman27 (talk) 09:52, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

No. There is nothing wrong with stubs. I myself have found several censuses on Burkina Faso villages, over 100 of which I have already created from red links and shall continue to create. Often I find a single village with tonnes of information because of some association with a European town. I shall continue to create these villages based on the 3 separate Burkina Faso government censuses I have gathered, plus UN and European Council programmes' maps and other Burkina government sources such as water well figures, school lists and pharmacy lists. Additionally, your section's responses here have given me more motivation to move into other African countries such as Senegal, not that I wasn't intending to anyway. It's all increased coverage and increased info, provided for free to readers, the obvious main goal of Wikipedia. SpikeballUnion (talk) 13:53, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Automated assessment of article importance

Hello everyone! I'm currently working on a project studying how to do automatic classification of article importance. As part of that project, I've done some analysis of articles within the scope of WikiProject Africa and built a model to predict article importance. As a reminder, the theme chosen for 2016 is "Music and Dance".

IMPORTANT: the dates have changed. The new dates for the contest are 1st of December till 31st of January.
It is planned on purpose to start just after WikiIndaba.
We are happy to say that Wikimedia Foundation has agreed to invest slightly more money at the local level this year.
We will be able to support up to 10 countries (against 8 during previous years).

Ashanti hoax tags

One user has tagged a number of pages associated with the Ashanti region or the historic Ashanti Empire as hoaxes, such that such articles now dominate the list of suspected hoaxes on wikipedia. Most of these tags seem unwarranted, as verifiable sources for the article are already linked. It'd be great if some other editors could check out these articles and remove the hoax tag where it's not needed.Landscape repton (talk) 08:21, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Updating Wikipedia articles about national parks in Africa

On behalf of the nonprofit organization African Parks via the Wyss Foundation, and as part of my work at Beutler Ink, I am working to create and improve several Wikipedia articles related to national parks in Africa. I created this page to describe the scope of the project and provide updates about my progress.

So far, I've submitted an expanded and updated draft for consideration at Talk:Liwonde National Park, and posted a note at WikiProject Malawi. I will likely be posting similar notes at other WikiProject Africa task forces for parks in other countries, once drafts are published.

2 new editors who could use help with sourcing

Editors June Matiku (talk · contribs) and Littlewitstert (talk · contribs) are working on various related articles, eg Suba people (Kenya), Irienyi people (created by June Matiku) Luo people of Kenya and Tanzania etc. It's great that they are working on these articles but they are rarely adding sources and when they do they are sometimes our articles on other subjects and oral history, all without inline citations. Readers have no way of knowing what might actually have verifiable sources and what might be based on unverifiable oral history. Right now I don't know what to do about these except stub any new articles and remove material added by these editors to old ones, which is a bit drastic. Any suggestions? Thanks. I've written a ton of the by-country articles on cannabis, and currently I'm trying to strengthen our Africa coverage. Right now our strongest Sub-Saharan African articles are Cannabis in South Africa and Cannabis in Nigeria, both of which were started by me but greatly improved by other editors specializing in those countries.

Concerning activity, and a possible restructuring

Hello WikiProject Africa. I was hoping to get an idea of how many editors here are active and monitor this page, so respond if you take an interest in this project. Considering the size (nominally, at least) and scope of this project, I would like to float a proposal for revamping this project. The 10,000 Challenge was our last real initiative and its fallen into a lull of inactivity, as has this talk page. Would any other users be interested in some restructuring of the project. I have not been active at this project, but as it happens is working with two Africa articles right now. I really think Africa ought to be the next major for Wikipedia along the line of the current women effort, so I would welcome your initiative, and I think it should include a new major contest (maybe next February, since US has a traditon for February as black history month) with WMF founding. I agree 100% that Africa should be the next area for improvement and its my dream that that occurs, but in some ways I think that ship has sailed and won't be returning to port for some time. The Africa Destubathon was winding down just as I was getting involved in related topics, and the whole Wiki seems to have moved on to women's matters. This I feel has much to do with social changes, particularly in the US, that involve women becoming more active online and asserting themselves on broad platforms. In many places in Sub-Saharan Africa, an internet connection is still hard to obtain and Wikipedia isn't nearly as popular or isn't promoted by as many institutions as it is in the US or Europe. Until that changes, it seems most of our countering systemic bias effort is going towards Women in Red. Even the Military History Project has decided to make its next contests geared towards women in the military. I work with AFC to approve draft articles for publication, and over the last several years I've seen a substantial increase in Nigeria new articles, presumably as internet availability increases in that very populous country. In the same way that India has gotten really huge into English Wikipedia (and presumably the Wikipedias for various Indian languages) in the last ten year, I would anticipate that Nigeria will start playing more and more of a role here on English Wikipedia. This is exciting but will likely entail some controversy too, in that an influx of excited new ediitors unfamiliar to Wikipedia will require some work to keep quality up and keep topics NPOV. India coverage in many areas suffers from having body of eager but very POV editors, and a lack of NPOV editors familiar enough niche Indian topics and also willing to dive into them to help keep things neutral. Also, for social reasons too complex and fraught to get into, it can be hard to find proper sourcing (particularly online) for many topics, thus making it hard to establish textbook Notability for topics which are clearly highly significant. Just drawing some parallels and noting some larger patterns as Wikipedia evolves. MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:43, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

In response to a point of contention over the level of credence to give to a couple of news sources reporting on a manslaughter trial (that of actress Elizabeth Michael) in Tanzania, I solicited outside comments nearly a week ago at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#News24 and Nairobi News – Elizabeth Michael. So far, the only participants there have been two participants from the original discussion. For reasons I'm not following, the editor who replied to my request declined to update the entry. Need support!

I've collaborated with the Swedish embassy to bring more female editors and articles about notable African women onto Wikipedia. The first editathon was held in Johannesburg where we had 60 participants, and it was a learning curve for me because almost all the articles created there were deleted. This time around we held the editathon in Lusaka Zambia with the, Swedish embassy and the Women's history Museum, where we had 37 participants and all articles were done on Sandbox, which gave ample time for the participants to reference, link their articles to other WP pages and categorize them. Problem is as always "notability", I don't want to delve much on the issue of notability but would like to ask if someone can help with checking all the articles created there and improve and approve them..... also tagging Women in Red. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Poorly sourced stubs - Angola, now Chad

An editor (@Shevonsilva:) is creating a flood of stubs such as Peni, Chad, with sources which do not appear to mention the place concerned. After a lot of work on places in Angola they have now moved on to the communes of Chad. If anyone has good reliable sources they can add for these, the encyclopedia would really benefit! Thanks. Updating Education in Tanzania page!

Hi! I am a current student at Rice University enrolled in a class called Poverty, Justice, & Human Capabilities. One of our semester's projects is to create or edit a Wikipedia article regarding anything that we are passionate about and that is relevant. I think that this page is really great in addressing different levels and types of education in Tanzania, as well as some brief information about curriculum, exams, etc. I would like to add a page about special needs education in Tanzania because while they have made significant progress over the last few decades, there is still an interesting stigma centered around disability, especially in "developing" countries. I'm very interested in global education as well as pediatric health impairments. I would most likely focus on speech deficits (I myself was born with an internal cleft palate, so I’m fascinated by and passionate about this), cognitive disorders, and physical challenges. I think this page has a lot of great content, but I'd love to add and would also love your feedback and questions if any. If you're interested in more detail on my plans, please check out my sandbox! Its a great effort to have African Coverage on line, but as a researcher and data analyst i look out for the facts especially on location. i would think for a place with its border line as defining factors, the data collector should looked for informed people in the area. Having grown up in that place i feel no justice was done to bring out who we are, how we live n then the structures of that place notably Upland Club House which has been in existence since 1995 not being part of the places of Interest with a consideration for new developments.

For instance its Zonal demarcations and the relevant features in it, the land tenure system. This place has a huge history, there are educated people above 80 years that served in the post independence government of Uganda such as Ssalongo Lwanga who participated in drawing the zonal boundaries during the early times. Make it possible to consult. also as we publish we should have the facts. On Wikis around Europe i always see in the footer section a mention of the kind "prominent people", "influential figures". We cannot have passed on a full residential area given its location near Mulago hospital with out key individuals being mentioned. am very certain there is a very instrumental Doctor who has lived here. Consult and we update this wiki.

This is Wonderful

Its nothing more annoying to me than Europeans trying to tell Africans about their own history, traditions and culture. We know our ancestors better than you could lie about it. We understand the cruel minds of most however it must stop. For instance call the Dogon Tribe "an ethnic group of people" is so disrespectful. They are a proud Tribe of people. What does "ethnic" even mean? It sounds like a derogatory under time to me. A lot of European philosophers made up stories to uplift their people. Which is understandable when you are trying to conquer another group of people. @DannyS712: The project has been a little thin for the past couple of years but I, for one, would support such a move. Wikipedia African Month

In the last few months, both French Wikipedia and Portuguese Wikipedia have held a Wikipedia African Month (French; Portuguese). The French event for 2019 was held in May, and the Portuguese event in March. Both were inspired by Wikipedia Asian Month, which was first held in 2015, and now involves a great many language versions of Wikipedia.

As a participant in Wikipedia Asian Month who has also contributed to Wikipedia content about Africa, I now encourage members of WikiProject Africa to set up an English Wikipedia version of Wikipedia African Month. If you want to hold one in 2019, there's still time: I would suggest maybe September or October (but not November - that's when Wikipedia Asian Month is held). For next year, I would suggest that you communicate with the organisers of the event on French and Portuguese Wikipedias with a view to having all language versions of the event held in the same month (and maybe also in other languages, eg Spanish).

Don't be shy about sending messages in English to the French and Portuguese organisers - a lot of the new pages created for this year's French and Portuguese Wikipedia Asian Months are translations of Wikipedia articles originally published on English Wikipedia. As part of any English Wikipedia African Month, the same thing could be done in reverse. Events like these are a great way to spread knowledge across language boundaries. Last year, one of the articles I submitted to English Wikipedia Asian Month about East Timor was translated into Chinese by another editor within 24 hours, and then submitted to Chinese Wikipedia Asian Month.

To hold an English Wikipedia African Month, you just need two or three editors to work together. For guidance in figuring out what to do, I suggest you check out the French Wikipedia pages, which are a bit more elaborate than the Portuguese ones (both can be translated using Google translate). If you need further assistance, you might also wish to contact the organisers of English Wikipedia Asian Month for 2018: their user pages are linked from the English Wikipedia Asian Month 2018 page. @Bahnfrend: As one of the more active Wikipedia editors in Africa-related content, I'd be interested in such an initiative—if only I thought it would lead to some meaningful content creation/improvement. I don't think there's much chance this succeeding, as it seems most en.wikipedia editors are perfectly happy editing about other things. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge has been ongoing since September 2016 and sees an addition only every few days, hence it only being at the (as time of writing) 3443rd improvement. -Indy beetle (talk) 23:27, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

I think your point about the 10,000 Challenge is an argument in favour of having a go at a Wikipedia African Month - if an initiative is clearly not being very effective, it's a good idea to try something else. After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The ISA Tool was created to provide a fun way for participants to add information/ tags / descriptors that identifies the elements that makes up each image by linking it to existing WikiData statements (it was named the coolest multimedia tool at the recent WikiData Conference). ISA is one of the pilot projects for the Structured Data on Commons project and helps to make images more useful as illustrations of articles, and also more easy to search for - it is multilingual too! New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Africa since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. This image, which is used in the infobox on the project page and the talk-page project boxes of articles, seems to be highlighting North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula only. I recognize that it is accurately reflecting vegetation vs. desert, but that's the effect I'm seeing at first glance. The Sahara too, not just North Africa. This is an actual satellite image, and both of your suggested alternatives also show the desert as brighter. Maybe a map? I'm a big geography buff, so I love looking at articles about other countries and cities in said countries. That said, this sentence on the page for Nouna, Burkina Faso, is eyebrow raising: "Out of those 20,000 inhabitants, Chris's Nouna has given them all a good time." It sounds somewhat juvenile. Update for Wiki Loves Women

Hello!

During March, Wiki Loves Women ran the Tell Us About Her campaign on the ISA Tool. The drive was aimed at improving the visibility of political leaders and activists across Africa on Wikimedia projects. If you do not know it yet, the ISA tool is a fun and mobile-friendly tool that helps players to add better descriptions to photographs within selected categories that have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The descriptions make the images more useful on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The information that is added to the image description is structured data (in the form of depicts or captions). Categories chosen for the Tell Us More About Her campaign were related to politicians, activists and, in particular, feminists based in Africa.

You can find out more about the campaign and the results here. There are many campaigns currently running on the ISA Tool, this was the first women-focused one. Please feel free to add your own!
