Reliable sources? IPCC reports? edit

Could be provided a list of some reliable sources to participants? In particular, it looks Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, containing a huge quantity of important information about climate change, are rarely used in Wikipedia articles. --Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 21:46, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Daniele Pugliesi. Thanks for your question. Yes, we plan to provide information on that early next week. You're an early bird! :-) In addition to the usual wikipedia rules about reliable sources WP:RS, IPCC reports would be good to cite. There are specific Wikipedia conventions for these ones which we'll explain. Oh and there is also this page which has some good information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change/Style_guide#Sources EMsmile (talk) 13:19, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Are you also joining us in our Slack channel for more direct communication during the week? (See on the main event page under registration) EMsmile (talk) 13:19, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

If you need some article ideas edit

Wikimedia Switzerland organised a similar project this week, see meta:Wikipedia for Peace/Climate Justice 2020. We made an extensive list of articles around climate justice that might be of interest for the participants of this project here as well. --Shikeishu (talk) 17:21, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Consider resizing banner edit

Hi, most of the left part of the banner is cut on my laptop (in Chrome), maybe resize? Good luck with the project, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:42, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Elitre (WMF): Hey! I centered the banner -- maybe that is a good design position? Sadads (talk) 20:31, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well, now the right side is cut :D I think it's just too wide, although I don't even have a sidebar open FWIW. TY though, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 16:06, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Latest reports and data to be included edit

From Arno's post in the Slack channel: "Well-timed report from WMO that came out yesterday. https://reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/GHG-Bulletin-16_en.pdf This will help us update emissions data. It also shows that the COVID pandemic has only has minor impacts on GHG emissions." EMsmile (talk) 06:19, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

New articles for DYK edit

Dear edit-a-thon participants, I would like to encourage those who have created a new article (or expanded an article that was previously just a stub) as part of this event to submit their articles to Wikipedia:Did you know. For those nominations which are approved, a short and interesting fact from the article will be included on the Wikipedia front page for 12 hours or a day. Nomination is not a guarantee of success, and reviewers may request some changes, but the DYKers are generally a friendly bunch so don't let this put you off. Please be aware that this needs to be done as soon as possible, as submissions must be made within a week of creation. Instructions for nominations can be found at Template talk:Did you know. I'm happy to assist as best I can if there are questions. Best, CMD (talk) 17:40, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Chipmunkdavis: Good candidates are Climate change in Kenya, Climate change in Tanzania and Climate change in Nigeria-- most of the rest of the articles have been expansions, that may or may not qualify because of age of article + not reaching the scale of expansion needed for DYK. I don't have time to develop that, but if you want to nominate -- welcome it, Sadads (talk) 11:39, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Chipmunkdavis:, @Sadads:. Maybe also Climate change in Pakistan? Is it time consuming to nominate them? Should we only nominate one or all four at once? If it's not too time consuming, I could give it a go? EMsmile (talk) 13:07, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

For an experienced editor, nominating them will cost about half an hour. You need one fact from the article with a citation. If there are major problems with the new article (big neutrality issues f.i.), reviewers will request you solve them. Femke Nijsse (talk) 13:11, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think Pakistan and Kenya are good examples here. Femke Nijsse (talk) 13:12, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

It can be fast if you know what you're doing. There's no problem with multiple nominations, and nominations aren't reviewed in any particular order. I think Kenya and Tanzania are the best options. Pakistan isn't a large enough expansion to qualify. Nigeria may qualify but it's not as good an article as Kenya and Tanzania. Kenya is the urgent one as that one is the oldest. EMsmile, if you want to try one now I suggest the Kenya article. CMD (talk) 13:25, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK, let's start with Kenya then. Is it a problem that I nominate it without having been involved in it? Also, what do you suggest as the hook? Example for a hook: | hook = ... that a lot of people died during the French Revolution (pictured)? Maybe: " ... temperatures in Kenya have already increased by 1 degree Celsius due to climate change in Kenya and that this creates water security challenges and puts pressure on major parts of the economy", CMD?

I'd go for a slightly smaller sentence; leave out the and puts pressure on major parts of the economy. You can propose multiple sentences and the reviewer will then select the most interesting one / properly cited one. I think a second proposal could be that 'sea level rise of just 30 cm will pose a threat of flooding to 17% of Kenya's second-largest city, Mombasa' Femke Nijsse (talk) 14:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Anyone can nominate, just include the names of the writers in the nomination. The writers still get credit. The hook needs to be less than 200 characters, and have a specific source. I've seen nominations be rejected for being too jargon heavy too, so it should be widely understandable. I'd also try and keep it snappy. You can add some different options if you want. Eg. "... that climate change in Kenya is threatening tea harversts?" "... that climate change in Kenya has caused previously glacier-fed rivers to stop flowing in some seasons?" "... that malaria is expected to become more prevalent due to the impacts of climate change in Kenya?" "... that climate change in Kenya might cause over 10% of country's diarrhoeal deaths in 2050?" "...that the Kenyan Government has created a specific action plan to adapt to the impacts of climate change in Kenya?". Reading a bit more closely I think some copyediting is needed to reduce close paraphrasing, but this can be done after the nomination. CMD (talk) 14:45, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've done it now for the Kenya article, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Did_you_know#Articles_created/expanded_on_November_24 Thanks for your help, Femke Nijsse and CMD. Let's see what happens. Should I also do one of the other ones next? The Pakistan article didn't get a 5-fold expansion in the last week. Maybe Climate change in Tanzania but I guess it may not be big enough yet. Was created 27 November so a bit more time left. Ping Sadads. EMsmile (talk) 17:01, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Tanzania is certainly big enough to nominate already, and there's no reason to stop working during the nomination process so long as the hook stays intact and general standards are maintained. CMD (talk) 17:36, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Proposition for some improvments edit

I think we should invite to participate not only people from the Wiki project climate change but also from WikiProject Environment.

It is important to invite all participants to join these projects for continuing to edit after the edit-a-thon.
When you edit about countries it is important to add that a good country page should include a paragraph about environment and some basic information in the lead section: the place of the country in the Environmental Performance Index, If part of Paris Agreement, if it pledged to zero emissions and when. It is at least as much important as the information about GDP. It should be added to the instruction in the page of the edit-a-thon.
