Prioritize old tags by date?

"In my humble opinion" (and maybe the Wiki Teahouse et. al. should be alerted to this), all unclaimed/unfulfilled citation tags greater than, say, 2 years, should be cached and treated with priority on the Wiki. Citation Needed page as opposed to those two days or a month old, when users (occasionally incl. myself) decide to try and find random citations." Prioritize by date, maybe? Just an observation, of course.--Kieronoldham[ (talk) 03:01, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Kieronoldham: You are welcome to run a backlog drive to help folks work on these, they are categorized by month in the subcategories at: Category:Articles_with_unsourced_statements. I know that I occassionally clear items off the backlog, and the Orphan article folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Orphanage (who I occasionally support/work with) are very good at working systematically through the tail end of the backlog. However, that would require organizing interest around clearing out these statements. I personally, don't have the time to help: but would probably show up if there were occasional drives to empty the last month. Sadads (talk) 22:37, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
@Sadads: I have briefly thought about this, and welcome the overture. I doubt I could maintain the attention on a continuous basis, though. I usually devote focus to individual articles/topics continually.--Kieronoldham (talk) 00:57, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
It doesn't have to be something just you run alone! There are folks who like doing backlog drives, and being at the forefront of those kinds of tactics. Finding a small group of folks who can work with you to make it fun (like the WikiCup or the GA drives). Maybe starting a conversation on some of the venues that you describe (i.e. the Teahouse, Village Pump, etc). Another thing you could do is to add more links to elsewhere in the wiki, that lead people to the backlog (like I did by adding links to citation hunt across policy and category pages). In the old days of 2007, the content of Wikipedia:Citation needed was aimed at newbies seeing a cn tag; now it is mostly aimed at editors using it. Wikipedia:Citation needed#If your work has been tagged does give a newbie a pretty good quick guide, but it's a little paragraph down at the end. I'm going to be bold and re-order it so that a newbie does not have to hunt for info relevant to them, please feel free to discuss this. HLHJ (talk) 19:46, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

All I want to do is comfirm a Citation needed that showed up on Mark McGuire baseball page. Your instructions on how to do that are the most confusing and impossible to understand. Scope

It seems to me to be a fundamental problem with {{cn}} that readers (and potential editors of the article) don't know if it applies to the preceding term, whole sentence, or whole paragraph. People are supposed to discuss in talk, but rarely do. I suspect it wouldn't help to have separate tags for term, sentence, and paragraph, though. Any thoughts on fixing this? Gah4 (talk) 19:36, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

I usually just assume it goes as far back as the last citation provided but doesn't exceed a paragraph (usually). DonIago (talk) 20:01, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
The template Template:Citation needed span does allow for specific facts to be tagged, but its not widely adopted (320,000 or so CNS, while only 2458 transclusions of the span template). I think its because the use of templates in that way is kind of nuanced from a user experience perspective (you need to understand how to wrap text in that way) and its not intuitive in Visual Editor or other tools. Moreover, mediawiki doesn't supporting annotation well, except on files, so you can't really "build" conversations that are closely associated with specific text (though the Talk Page Consultation provides some nuance into that). Realistically, talk pages are rarely ever used on smaller articles and are kindof dead-spaces except on the most active/controversial pages. Sadads (talk) 20:36, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Most of the articles I am thinking about have well used talk pages, but not for talking about {{cn}}. I suspect that the people who add them aren't interesting in discussing them. I now put a reason= into the one that caused me to start this discussion. I suppose I might get used to doing that more often. Gah4 (talk) 22:21, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Is "citation needed" too restrictive or being misused?

While no one can argue with liking citations (which forms a sort of post-facto consensus), it puts several limitations on the WP:Product of Wikipedia. Firstly, editors seem to overuse it to restrict original content and while I've seen some disdain for so-called "original research", there shouldn't be a front-loaded bias in the community when volunteers are providing content. Shun poor-quality data, not original data. Being able to distinguish between the two requires time, but removing content makes it impossible. Which brings me to the second point...

There's no need to compete with print encyclopedias, so make a triumph of informality and let time hone it into quality. That is, like WP:BB, by allowing people to provide information, even if they are large claims and poorly cited, creates a community of discussion, rather than a chilling effect of feeling unwanted. The wiki:WikiNature agrees. Wikipedia shouldn't need to worry about acceptance from the Establishment -- it is a radical product. The MediaWiki software is still the most valuable collaboration product on the Internet, without a doubt. It has the best SpecialPages|tools that allow very sophisticated pruning and curating content that nobody has duplicated. Let them do the work -- not moderators. Wiki doesn't have to create the best products, but the best collaborations on the internet. Average64 (talk) 21:45, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

This seems misplaced, as the points you're raising have little to do with the use of the template itself. As your issues seem to be with Wikipedia's verifiability policy instead, I might recommend raising them at WT:V. Though frankly, I support Wikipedia's requirement that information be verifiable and suspect you're not going to get much traction. DonIago (talk) 03:06, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Please Address Tag-Spam

I can find several archived discussions lamenting pages spammed with {{cn}}, but nothing in the article tells you what to do about it. Right now, there is nothing other than WP:BOLD/WP:SOFIXIT to explain that cleaning up articles is a good thing. I'd like to suggest some opportunities:

  1. Add a line in the seventh bullet of the Not To section that suggests something like "Please do not use both a template at the article/section level as well as individual {{Citation needed}} tags. If an entire article or section needs citations, readers will understand that the individual statements therein need them. When you add the template, please remove existing {{Citation needed}} tags."
  2. Please add some sort of "what to do" section (or §§ of the Not To section) to advise editors on how to address abuse:
    1. Warn against revert war baiting: "If a number of {{Citation needed}} tags have been added recently, please discuss the matter on the article's talk page. Ask the editor who added the tags to consider some of the options discussed below to improve the readability of the article without impairs the reader's ability ti understand that some of the statements may be un- or under-sourced."
    2. Ask them to add the overarching tag, if needed: "If the section or article does not already have one, please add an {{Unreferenced}}, {{Refimprove}}, or {{Unreferenced section}} tag.
    3. Ask them to clean up the article and reference the Talk Page: "Remove the existing {{Citation needed}} tags and discuss the your reasoning on the article's talk page."

Much appreciated. Last1in (talk) 21:42, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

When Is it appropriate to remove the tag

I've seen some pretty short articles with this tag. If everything in the article is cited can we remove the tag? Or is the tag also a sign of it being a very short article so we should find many more sources to expand the article? RedPatchBoys (talk) 19:05, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

I think you misplaced your question, as this is the Talk page for discussion of the general "Citation needed" concept rather than a specific template. I'm assuming you're referring to a template that applies to an article based on your questions.
If everything in an article is cited, then there's no reason why there should be a request for citations. Sorry for the wrong section, but thanks for the information. An example of what I mean with an article with the "Citations needed tag" is Ifunanyachi Achara. Should I just remove the tag when see instances like this? RedPatchBoys (talk) 01:55, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Seems reasonable to remove it. If someone contests it, you can always go to the article's Talk page to get a better sense of their concerns. Cheers! DonIago (talk) 02:16, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Remove the need to cite the fact Marshall amps are based on Fender from the intro because it is clearly cited later in the article. Also, read the entire article before flagging it like a child. Finally, explain why I give you money. 69.144.23.101 (talk) 04:58, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Actually, I think it was Roy's brother, Frank. Roy was also an important politician. According to "Peratrovich family in Alaska, 1880s-2001,"[1] "Two sons of John and Mary [Peratrovich] were also prominent -- Frank was a territorial and state Alaska legislator, founder and leader of the Purse Seiners' Union, mayor of Klawock, and a founder of statehood. Roy was a territorial and state legislator as well as Grand President of the Alaska Native Brotherhood." Thus the description might need to be corrected. Thank you. Regarding "citation needed" in first paragraph of Eizabeth's "Later Life" section, the page, "Peratrovich family in Alaska," 1880s-2001 [2] states, "Two sons of John and Mary [Peratrovich] were also prominent -- Frank was a territorial and state Alaska legislator, founder and leader of the Purse Seiners' Union, mayor of Klawock, and a founder of statehood. Roy was a territorial and state legislator as well as Grand President of the Alaska Native Brotherhood." Thus it would appear that Elizabeth's husband Roy was not the mayor of Klawock, it was his brother. I suggest replacing the phrase "where Roy was elected to four terms as mayor" with the words, "from which Roy served as a territorial and state legislator. Roy also served as Grand President of the Alaska Native Brotherhood." McConnell (talk) 03:55, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

In order to a bankruptcy of some clubs in 1b, RWDM could take place in 1B league in2020, having a licence of profclub. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1811:BC23:C100:FC2A:85BC:89F9:1DE6 (talk) 20:24, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
