My strange advice on the help desk re: Karl Keffer

edit

Thanks for you addition. The reason I tried to get the questioner to interact with that other editor is that I think the questioner is an older person who may find it difficult to navigate our policies and procedures by herself. (Yes, this is ageist. I'm 71 years old myself.) Further, she is Canadian, and that other editor is experienced and has a declared interest in Canadian golfers. Hence my unusual advice in this case. -Arch dude (talk) 20:43, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Arch dude: ahhh I see! I only added what I did because I thought those pages I linked to could be useful in that situation - in addition to what you had replied - it wasn't because I thought your advice wasn't helpful though!   Seagull123 Φ 21:39, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Images and Tables

edit

Hi. It's HolSegel again...you are going to be so sorry that you invited me to contact you with questions! LOL! I have been working on my article and now I am to the final stage of uploading 3 images and 2 tables. The tables are a bit complex so I am wondering if they can be uploaded as an image as well? Also, if you wouldn't mind pointing me to where I can find the tutorial on how to upload images, I will be in your debt! I am not sure I get the signature bit...````HolSegel — Preceding unsigned comment added by HolSegel (talkcontribs) 15:33, 4 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @HolSegel: for help with inserting tables, have a look at Help:Table and Help:Wikitable. These pages explain how to add tables to articles (the first page is a bit more complex than the other). For other pages explaining how to use tables, look at the "see also" section here: Help:Table#See also. For help on how to put images into articles, look at Help:Visual file markup and Wikipedia:Images. For help on how to upload images to Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons, look at Wikipedia:Uploading images, Commons:First steps/Uploading files and Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup. Hopefully this helps you! PS: to insert your signature, you need to type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. That will produce your signature. Seagull123 Φ 17:17, 5 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dermatophytosis

edit

I am 77. My forte is veterinary medicine, not IT. I received an email a few minutes ago from Wikipedia. I am assuming you are the gatekeeper for the dermatophyte page. Perhaps you might send me another email just stating yes or no to accepting my update of your broken link to my url. And yes, I wrote the article. I will abandon attempting to correct Wikipedia broken links if this and the next few fail. I have a white pelican and parrot with a broken wing and leg that I need to focus my attentions on. Ron Hines — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronaldhines (talkcontribs) 18:21, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Ronaldhines: I realise now that my reply to you was unnecessarily short and lacking in detail. I will try and explain my response and what you could do now. Because you made an edit request (using the {{edit semi-protected}} template), your request appeared in this category: Category:Wikipedia semi-protected edit requests, where editors who want to help make the edit can help out. I am not the 'gatekeeper' for the page - on Wikipedia, no one is the gatekeeper for anything (you can read more about this at Wikipedia:Ownership of content). My response to you (here) was only intended to point you towards two pages that could be of interest to you - one regarding Wikipedia's policies on citing sources you published yourself, and one regarding the use of email on Wikipedia (as you included your email address in your request). I apologise for how short my response was, as I now realise it would have been of more use to you if I had elaborated on why I was writing that. Thank you for wanting to help improve Wikipedia! I will soon leave a message on your talk page with links that may help you understand how Wikipedia works. While I hope you feel like you are able to continue improving Wikipedia, as it says here, you are not obliged to edit here. In terms of your edit request, I will shortly get around to looking at the links you left, and sorting it out. If you do need any more help, you can always leave me another message here on my talk page, or if you want help from other editors, you could ask at the help desk. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Speedy deletion nomination of Lanoisseforp trepxe

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Lanoisseforp trepxe, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Tagishsimon (talk) 19:04, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Tagishsimon: I didn't write this article, that was Lanoisseforptrepxe, who keeps making the same article with different titles; I merely moved it to draftspace (that's why Twinkle thought I wrote the article). I know this message was only left here because of Twinkle, but I thought I would let you know.   Seagull123 Φ 19:09, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Editing Le musée des bus à Dewsbury

edit

Hi Seagull123,

Thank you for your message. I'm afraid I have dropped a bit of a clanger here. Yes, it is in French but it was supposed to have been on fr-wikipedia.org not en-wikipedia.org.

I have now put it in the right place so this en-version can be deleted. I'm not sure how to delete a draft, perhaps you could advise me.

Many thanks,

24 Barnsley Road — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24 Barnsley Road (talkcontribs) 22:54, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @24 Barnsley Road: don't worry about it! I believe you can add the template {{db-author}} to the top of the draft if you want it deleted. If you don't add that though, I believe it will automatically be deleted in six months if it's not edited at all in that time (see WP:G13). Hopefully this helped  . Sorry Seagull123,

I forgot to add the four tildas at the bottom.

I have another problem, the fr page has started adding the title in English even though the tezt is in French. Now I am puzzled...

@Seagull123:

Thank you for the work you do on the Wikipedia, and amazing institution.

RE: I'm not a "representative of the Wikipedia authorities": I certainly understand. I was actually being facetious, and should have put "Wikipedia authorities" in scare quotes to signal that.

RE: I'm sorry for the slow reply: My apologies for badgering you. Being a relative novice to Wikipedia, I couldn't tell whether or not I had done the right thing to continue the conversation, or whether the delay was normal.

RE: the rules of the Wikipedia: I try very hard to respect them. I think this situation raised some interesting questions:

(1) I certainly understood that without a reference to cite, I must not make a claim in the article itself, as the references (together with the seal of authenticity by what one might call the "Wikipedia authorities" in the case of a semi-protected article) are an attestation of authenticity that is cherished, and must be protected.

(2) The question of whether my images constitute "original research" is a bit intriguing:

  • one can surely add to an article a citation to a secondary source; people do this all the time,
  • one can surely add to an article a citation to a primary source, or even a side-bar link to the primary source to an article; people do this all the time.
  • what I am proposing is to add to an article a cropped close-up image of a primary source, and it is an interesting question as to whether the mere act of saying "look here" is "original research". I believe, and argued that, it is not.

(3) Even in the Talk page I felt reticent to come right out and make the claim. So I spoke of the "inconsistency". I also felt a sense of obligation to fess up to the fact that there is, in fact, an underlying claim to be made. I didn't feel it appropriate to try to sneak the images by as mere illustrations without acknowledging there is a "rest of the story".

(4) I think it interesting that even when something is unquestionably true, one still need a source to cite. This isn't meant as criticism of the Wikipedia, just as something that is "interesting". I guess "unquestionably" is on a spectrum. For a proposed insertion "God created heaven and earth in seven days, i.e., a week" one might require a citation to Genesis for the first point, but would not require a citation to an authoritative source for the definition of "week".

(5) Here, in the privacy of your personal Talk page, I am curious to ask whether in reviewing my proposed submission you came to the same conclusion (without my spelling it out) as I did as to the "unquestionable" truth of the matter:

(a) The DOJ claims that the date "5/10/17" in its original submission of the McCabe evidence was written on a sticky note (referred to in one place as a "blue flag"). False: Clearly, the date was written directly on the McCabe evidence itself, where it crosses a line of his ruled paper. If the date had been written on a sticky note, the sticky note would have obscured lines, and the date would have appeared in the clear.

(b) The DOJ claims that the date "5/10/17" was eliminated in its subsequent resubmission of the McCabe evidence by removal of the offending sticky note. False: The date was made to disappear by affixing (over it) a blank sticky note whose outline is clearly visible, and that obscures lines of the ruled paper.

(c) The DOJ claims that the "content" of the evidence was “not altered in any way”. False: As described in (1), the date is written directly on the evidence.

(d) Could this have been an accident? No: Someone had to make the deliberate decision to affix a blank sticky note over the date to make it disappear.

I am genuinely curious to know whether in considering the submission, you found these truths to be self-evident, or whether I have been so close to this that I have lost my perspective.

GreenEyewash (talk) 21:44, 3 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @GreenEyewash: thanks for your reply! In reply to your messages, to point #4 you raised, you may be interested in reading this essay: Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth - in short, Any material added to Wikipedia must have been published previously by a reliable source. Editors may not add content solely because they believe it is true, nor delete content they believe to be untrue, unless they have verified beforehand with a reliable source. I'm not going to say what I think about whether the date was added on purpose (or whatever actually happened), as I personally don't think it's relevant what we editors think about the issue. I understand you still think these images should be added to the page, and if you still want that to happen, I refer you back to my recent reply to your edit request on the other talk page, where I advise you to try and build consensus - for more on how to build consensus, I suggest you read this page section. If you try to do this, it may help to have read relevant policies/guidelines first about image use on Wikipedia to help make your case. Such relevant pages that you may find of interest are Wikipedia:Image use policy#Adding images to articles, and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images. If you still need help, you may want to leave another question at the Help desk, or at the Teahouse which is a place for new editors to ask questions. Hopefully this helped. Seagull123 Φ 15:49, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Seagull123: The links you provide are much appreciated. I look forward to reading them. An alternative route for me is just to get the claim published in a suitably acceptable place elsewhere, and then return to requesting an edit to the Wikipedia article, but with citation to my own (now) "authoritative" source. Sigh.

GreenEyewash (talk) 16:02, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@GreenEyewash: please forgive me if I've previously misunderstood you, or caused confusion, but your request is to simply insert these images into the article, isn't it? If so - as far as I am aware - there is no real need for a citation for the images on their own - unless you want a caption inserted with the image which isn't just a straightforward description of the image itself. I've rejected your request for now because I personally am not convinced of the benefit of inserting these images - and that's why I suggested you build consensus with other editors on whether they should be inserted into the article or not. Please don't feel like this edit 'isn't allowed' for lack of a reference - it is for lack of consensus. If you do try and publish your claims elsewhere and then want to use that as a citation for something, please also make sure you've read WP:SPS and WP:SELFCITE. Seagull123 Φ 16:13, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Seagull123: I should have known that you all have probably been down this path a 1M times before. More references to read; thanks. I revise my previous thought:

An alternative route for me is just to get my "claim" published in a suitably acceptable place elsewhere, hope to get attention, and then wait for someone else independently to request an edit to the Wikipedia article, but with citation to my own (now) "authoritative" revelation. Or alternatively, Judge Sullivan notices the same thing in the evidence as I did, and takes action, in which case it will be on the front page of the NY Times.

GreenEyewash (talk) 16:34, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@GreenEyewash: I think I understand you now  . But please don't be disheartened by this - I really recommend you try and follow what I suggested above, as there is a chance other editors may disagree with me and think the images are useful - like I said, I'm not a 'representative of Wikipedia' - I'm just one person expressing their own views. If you need any more help with anything, don't hesitate to leave me another message. Seagull123 Φ 16:37, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion declined: Soul Electronics

edit

Hello Seagull123. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Soul Electronics, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: notable founder indicates significance, consider merging / redirecting per WP:ATD. Thank you. SoWhy 14:13, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @SoWhy: thanks for letting me know! Just in case you hadn't seen though, a draft version of the article (albeit a slightly different version) was twice declined through AfC, which was also part of the reason I nominated it for speedy deletion. Seagull123 Φ 16:43, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
A draft decline is in itself not a reason for speedy deletion. Those declines were for lack of notability. A7 uses a different, lower standard than notability. You can nominate it for deletion at WP:AFD where notability is relevant but before you do, consider whether it won't be easier and better to just merge/redirect to Ludacris' article instead. If you have a list of references for the person, please provide them - either by adding them to the article, or by listing them at the deletion discussion page. The reason it's been proposed for deletion is because of a lack of notability: you should read WP:GNG and WP:BIO and see whether you think you can prove this person is notable enough for their own article, based on what reliable sources say. Hi @Vaninnature: thanks for your message! I'm not a reviewer at AfC, so I can't say whether there is enough for it to be approved or not; but at a quick glance, there appears to be a good amount of inline citations. However, in the filmography section, you have provided inline citations for some entries, but not all of them. Therefore it is not immediately clear which references/sources support the other entries in that section. While it may not be explicitly required to provide inline citations for these entries, it would be a great improvement to provide either an inline citation for each entry, or each table (in the table headings). Could you tell me if the logo file is still accessible for an editor to upload to the article, or do I need to go through the request process again? Much appreciated HSMaximus (talk) 20:46, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @HSMaximus: the file you uploaded (File:Maximus Inc. Logo.png) was speedily deleted on 27 December for the F5 reason (Orphaned non-free use images). This means that it's not available to any editor on Wikipedia to upload it to the article. You may want to try using Wikipedia:Files for upload. If you upload it again - as long as you are clear about your COI in your edit summary, and if you leave a note on the talk page explaining what you've done - I (personally) don't see why you couldn't upload the logo to the article yourself. I would personally suggest you just make sure you state that you're doing it to make sure it isn't deleted under the F5 rationale. However, other editors may disagree - and my suggestion is only my personal suggestion, so if you do this, be prepared for your edit to be reverted. Seagull123 Φ 15:58, 6 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your draft article, Draft:Ikrimah al-Barbari

edit

Hello, Seagull123. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Ikrimah al-Barbari".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hi, I just got this message that my username is not right?

Not sure why not so please, help?

Thanks!

username: CazVinBooks — Preceding unsigned comment added by CazVinBooks (talkcontribs) 15:57, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @CazVinBooks: I left that message on your talk page as it appears your username may be against Wikipedia's policies on usernames (click here: WP:UPOL, to read the policy). This isn't about your editing or anything, purely the username, and I just wanted to discuss with you whether it is against the policy or not. Wikipedia doesn't allow usernames that unambiguously represent the name of a company, group, institution or product (WP:ORGNAME), and "CazVinBooks" appears that it may be the name of an organisation to do with books (such as a bookseller or publishers). If this isn't the case, please do say so. Also, Wikipedia doesn't allow user accounts to be shared by multiple people, so usernames that imply that may be the case, such as usernames that are simply names of companies or groups aren't allowed (WP:ISU), and as above, your username suggests that may be the case. If this isn't the case, please do say so. If you want to change your username, you are able to do so following the links on your talk page; and if you disagree that your username is against Wikipedia's policies, do say so. Hopefully this clears up things for you - but if you need any more help, just leave me another message. Seagull123 Φ 16:09, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CazVinBooks (talkcontribs) 18:47, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply and that clarification @CazVinBooks! I think it would be a good idea to essentially put what you've written here on your user page, so that other editors can see the reasoning behind your username. Personally - as long as it's just your personal blog (ie: you run the blog and write the content for it; other people aren't involved) - I don't think there's anything wrong with your username, but other editors may disagree, and so leaving that on your userpage would be beneficial. Hi [[User:Seagull123|, thanks for your reply. I understand - am happy to change my name to prevent any further misunderstanding, just don't know how to. Will for now, add the info and if you know how to, please let me know, I don't want to start on here by antagonising people! I just am not used to using 'anonymous' usernames so I either use CazVin.... Hello, I've reviewed the article request and agree that it's current designation as a C article is no longer appropriate. I will leave the Project Group to decide otherwise but have now designated the article at B. I would recommend that in due course you request an assessment for a higher grade.--Dorkinglad (talk) 19:12, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

biographies of living persons

Thank you for quality biographies about persons from various regions such as Anna Cabana, Tanya Compas and Nathalie Saint-Cricq, for Agriculture in North Macedonia translated from French, for welcoming and helping newcomers and for answers at help desks, for "change the tone of the article to make it more encyclopaedic and less promotional", - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service

edit

Hi Seagull123! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over six months.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in six months.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|Seagull123|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

edit
Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:39, 23 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
