The objectives of this Honors class are to develop scientific reading, writing, and presentation skills using insect model systems for 1) understanding the evolution of complex traits in animals, and 2) how global warming and diseases affect the health and lives of insects. We will be covering caste development in social insects, the impact of endosymbionts on insect development and behavior, feeding and digestion, colony collapse disorder, and adaptations to temperature. We will begin to dissect the primary scientific literature at the same time practicing the complex art of scientific communication. The skills you develop in this class will be useful in a variety of settings after graduation from UCI. A significant part of the course grade will be based on improving existing Wikipedia articles on Orange County insects by adding or improving sections on their biology.
