An Easy Guide To Assessment

If you are new to assessment in WikiProject India, this article should help you.

DOCUMENTATION - Rater.js (A script to automate your assessment)

In Part 1 of the Guide, you learned about how to assess articles using the Wikiproject India talk page template and by filling in the two parameters - "class" and "importance". Part 2 of this Guide showed you how to add more functionality to the template while assessing an article. If this is incorporated, a single assessment becomes very useful for sorting and earmarking of articles by means of categories. Part 3 of the Guide, deals with the AutoWikiBrowser, a semi-automated Windows tool for technically adept editors.

(Note: Parts 1, 2 and 3 are older versions of the Guide, but are still valid for Tag & Assess 2021)

This part, Part 4 of the Guide, deals with Rater.js, a simple script-based tool which makes assessment easier for technically-challenged editors.

What is it?

A javascript which adds an easy to use assessment bar at the bottom of articles pertaining to WikiProject India so we can assess them easily.

How to get it? (step by step)

• Go to Special:MyPage/common.js
• Paste the text importScript('User:YuviPanda/AssessmentBar/install.js'); into that page (create it if it does not exist).
• Press reload once again after saving it (called purging the cache).
  

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Internet Explorer: hold down the Ctrl key and click the Refresh or Reload button. Firefox: hold down the Shift key while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R). Google Chrome and Safari users can just click the Reload button. How does it work?

Once installed, the assessment bar appears at the bottom of pages of articles belonging to WikiProject India only. It does this by auto-detecting the talk page template. The bar has a number of small controls on it which display the present assessment & also allow you to change the assessment and save it. It is very easy to use, try it out yourself.

Detailed instructions below for newbies

The Assessment Bar has two drop-down boxes- one titled "importance" at the left, the other titled "class" to the right and seen here with the drop-down box extended.

The Assessment Bar has six tick-boxes.

The Assessment Bar's last elements are the two button/links titled "Next Article" and "Save".

Drop-down boxes for overall assessment

The left most controls after the words “Wikiproject India” are:

• two untitled drop-down boxes, the first shows Importance, the second for Class. These are the WikiProject overall assessments.
• Change them to the assessment level desired. The permitted values are in the drop-down box.

• Next to that are one or more (or even none) names of subprojects to which the article has been added.

• • Each subproject has a drop-down box for the importance of article to that subproject. (Class ie stub, start-class etc are same for all the wikiprojects to which an article belongs and needs no adding.)
  • If the class shown is inappropriate, change the level by selecting the correct choice.
  • A clickable “x” or cross can be found to the left of the subproject name. Clicking it will remove the subproject to its imediate right.
• There is a “New SubProject” clickable link. Use this if you need to add a new subproject to the article.
  • Clicking it opens up a small dialog box with a text box & drop-down list.
  • Typing in the first few letters in the text-box will get you the choice you need.
  • Choose the relative importance of the article to the daughter WikiProject by choosing appropriate level of importance.
  • Which are the choices for new subproject for WikiProject India? Read the list in this link.
  • Press the “add” button to add your selected subproject. The box will close & your new addition should appear on the bar right away.
  • Press the “x” button to remove any subprojects. It should vanish directly.

Additional information tick-boxes

To the right of the Subprojects are six tick-boxes. They are:

• ORPHAN
• NEEDS-INFOBOX
• MAP-NEEDED
• IMAGE-NEEDED
• ATTENTION
• PRE

The assessment will reflect their present state. Tick them if they apply to the article. Untick them if they no longer apply. Press "save" to finalise the assessment for the new values of the tick-boxes to be loaded.

Save & Next article buttons

At the end & to the right at the bottom of the Assessment Bar are two blue links which act like buttons -

• Next article.
• Save.

“Next article” fetches another unassessed article from WikiProject India for you to assess, should you chose to use this feature.

MOST IMPORTANT : The “Save” link - Your assessments/changes are shown to you but get saved ONLY when you press the save button. So don’t forget to use it.

The overall procedure (in a nutshell)

• Select an article of WikiProject India for assessment.
• See the present assessment on its talk page.
• Make your assessment & set up the choices in the Assessment bar.
• Press “save”.
• Go to talk page & check that your assessment done correctly.
• Give feedback if any bug is encountered.
• Go to next article.
