Template:Scientists whose names are used as non SI units (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

This doesn't come close to meeting the guideline criteria in WP:NAVBOX. It shouldn't even be a category, per WP:OVERCAT, let alone a navbox. This is the sort of thing that belongs in a list – List of scientists whose names are used as non SI units. — This, that and the other (talk) 10:47, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. It goes with Template:Scientists whose names are used as SI units. It's not an unreasonable thing for a reader to want to navigate around easily. SpinningSpark 11:22, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Spinningspark: I am a proponent of navboxes, but not unnecessary or "clutterful" ones such as this. Navboxes are intended to provide easy access between a group of tightly-related articles, or articles on the same topic. That is the problem here: this navbox simply groups together some scientists who have had a certain thing (a unit of measurement) named after them. If you'll allow me to bring some CFD terminology over here, that is hardly a "defining characteristic" of these scientists.
    • I don't want to seem annoying, but I would be interested to know whether you think this template meets the general guidelines presented at WP:NAVBOX. — This, that and the other (talk) 10:19, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, WP:NAVBOX says "Good templates generally follow some of these guidelines", it does not require that all of them are met.
      1. All articles within a template relate to a single, coherent subject. Units of measure are a coherent subject. Units named after scientists are a subset of this. Furthermore, most of them belong to previously widespread coherent sets of units.
      2. The subject of the template should be mentioned in every article. Every article mentions (or should meniton) that the scientist has a unit named after them.
      3. The articles should refer to each other, to a reasonable extent. Yes, at least the ones that are in the CGS system of units will refer to the article on the CGS system.
      4. There should be a Wikipedia article on the subject of the template. Yes, there is.
Further, WP:NAVBOX says Navigation templates are particularly useful for a small, well-defined group of articles. This group of scientists is extremely small, not to say exclusive and it is certainly well-defined. Precisely defined in fact.
But enough of the wikilawyering over guidelines, back to basics. Is this actually useful to an encyclopaedia reader? Well, I can think of two questions I have personally tried to answer in the past that this template quickly finds the information. One was how many scientists of great importance in electrical science used to have units named after them but no longer do? Maxwell imediately springs to mind, but there is also Gilbert. The other one was what electromagnetic units were named after well known scientists. The purpose of an encyclopaedia is to answer readers' questions. I am sure that if I have been asking these questions other have been too. SpinningSpark 16:15, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the detailed response, I can see where you're coming from. But I stand by my view that the questions that can be answered by this navigation box are of an obscure nature, and the list suffices to answer them anyway. — This, that and the other (talk) 07:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep:I created this template noting that the contributions of some scientists were so great that the scientific community immortalized them by naming the physical units after them. They share the same honor and there is nothing wrong to show their names in a template. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:41, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: per Spinningspark. Fitnr (talk) 15:30, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – As Spinningspark noted "It goes with Template:Scientists whose names are used as SI units." —Omnipaedista (talk) 13:52, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I can see that a lot of people want this kept, and normally I would be happy to accept that consensus is against me, but I really think some arguments here deserve refutation:
      • "It goes with Template:Scientists whose names are used as SI units." Had I known the other template existed, I would have included it in this deletion nomination! They should either both stay or both go. But, since I didn't bundle the nominations, this template should be considered on its own merits without arguments based on the existence of the other template. If this template is deleted, I would nominate the other one straight away with similar rationale.
      • "There is nothing wrong to show their names in a template"... Navboxes are very pragmatic items, serving for navigation among closely related articles. While these scientists are obviously quite famous and important, that by itself doesn't mean they need a navbox!
    • This, that and the other (talk) 07:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - it sits at the bottom of a an article in a slightly out-of-place fashion. It would be better served, I think, by a list or category, as that is what it essentially is. Jamesx12345 13:13, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
