Qualification of a biography for submission to Wikipedia

I would like to submit a biographical article about an acquaintance but have not contributed to Wikipedia before and am not sure of the requirements. This lady is living and is 78 years old. She was raised on Mississippi plantations and was elected Miss University of Southern Mississippi in the early 1960s. She was also VP of the Student Government Association at USM. She has been recognized in her hometown newspaper, The Natchez Democrat, a number of times. She cofounded a private K!2 school in Grove Hill, Al, in 1970 and has been recognized for charitable donations to several causes and organizations in the era of 1980 to 2015.

She meets the requirements for publications but her notoriety is specific to Southern Mississippi and Clarke County, Alabama.

Please advise and thank you for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:B315:7C00:789F:683C:7406:DE51 (talk) 22:43, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia User: Rickbythesea — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickbythesea (talkcontribs) 23:02, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

@Rickbythesea: It's very hard to demonstrate notability as far as Wikipedia is concerned. There needs to be sufficient sources, including ideally several in-depth profiles. Regional notability may not be enough. If you'd like to let us know her name, I can look up her media coverage and give you my opinion about whether it makes sense to start an article about her. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 01:41, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Timtempleton her name is Virginia Boyd Sojourner Harrigan. Her deceased husband's name is William Dwight Harrigan, II. They are heirs to Harrigan Lumber Co. in Fulton, Al, and Monroe County, Al. They've been cited for many things. As a matter of fact, I could make this page about the Harrigan family and/or her husband Wm Harrigan. Here's info from his obit that shows humanitarian activities and awards he (they) were cited for: William Dwight Harrigan, II Obituary

Thanks again for your best opinion! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickbythesea (talkcontribs) 15:50, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Related to a protected deleted page

Hi. On 15 February 2017 an admin DGG had indefinitely protected Lenskart from being created. I think this article now is notable enough to be created. Here are a few recent references that support its inclusion:

... and there are more good and decent references available. Does only DGG have to unblock it or can some other admin.... if they see fit and it meets inclusion guidelines now. I would like to create the article if possible. DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 15:29, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

  • @DiplomatTesterMan: Per WP:SALT: contact DGG directly, and if it goes nowhere file a request for unprotection at WP:RFPP. Before that though, SALT says: To make a convincing case for re-creation, it is helpful to show a draft version of the intended article when filing a request.
(Judging by your contribs, explaning how drafts work is hardly needed, but do ask if necessary.) TigraanClick here to contact me 15:53, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Tigraan, thanks for the information. Brings clarity into what to do next... I was just doubtful since I have never recreated a deleted protected page. DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 16:24, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Creating a Wiki Page Confusion

Hello-

I tried creating a wiki page for my partner, Mark Jenkins who is a very accomplished author and alpinist. I had many citations in my page, but it was taken down, and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm really quite bad at all of this.

Martha— Preceding unsigned comment added by Marthatate (talkcontribs)

@Marthatate: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. The article you created was not deleted, but it was moved to draft space, it is now located at Draft:Mark Jenkins (writer). The person who performed the page move cited its promotional nature and your conflict of interest(in writing about your partner) in moving the article. Please review the conflict of interest policy for more information. As you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid directly editing about your partner, but you may submit your draft for an independent review using Articles for Creation, and suggest changes to existing articles using edit requests. If you submit your draft, you can get feedback on it before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia.
You will want to review the notability criteria for authors or writers to see if your partner meets them, and then see what independent reliable sources with significant coverage exist to support the claim of notability. If you haven't already, you may find it helpful to read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial. Successfully writing a new article is challenging, especially with a conflict of interest, so feel free to ask further questions here. 331dot (talk) 16:25, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Draft Josip Zovko

Hello, you have rejected my draft. Although this was recognized by other Wikipedias. Also the pages of ImDd were taken over by all wikis. Shall I add to this other sources? Moj Galeb (talk) 12:23, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

@Moj Galeb: hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Other Wiki projects may have different criteria for inclusion. The En Wiki is generally understood to be one of the most strict for what sources it will accept. IMDb is generally not considered an acceptable source. So yes - if you want the draft to be accepted next time, you should look to add other reliable sources to it. Hugsyrup 12:27, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Hello, are sources of "online newspapers" serious and recognized? Which sources should and can be used? Moj Galeb (talk) 12:38, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
@Moj Galeb: - it's difficult to generalise because some newspapers are highly reliable, whereas others are not. Some online newspapers are indeed serious and recognised, so simply being online isn't a problem in itself. The most important policy to read to help understand this is WP:RS. It is a bit long but well worth taking the time to read. Hugsyrup 12:43, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
I have changed and adapted the links and sources. The question is if I can use the same links and sources multiple times? Moj Galeb (talk) 13:21, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
@Moj Galeb: - yes you can. Having multiple sources is better both to establish notability and to ensure that the article is balanced and reflects a neutral point of view. However, there is nothing to stop you using the same source to back up several different statements within the article. Hugsyrup 13:26, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for the support. I hope that the article will be accepted with the sources and will be published soon. Moj Galeb (talk) 13:36, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

@Moj Galeb: Please also see WP:RS/P for a partial list of popular sources and WP editors' consensus on their reliability. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:23, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello AlanM1, thank you for your information. But I can not use these sources because I only have sources from Croatia. I have seen other Croatian artists recognize these Croatian sources. Also I have seen that the IMDd was recognized by actors who were criticized by me. I have sources of renowned Croatian media from television, radio and online newspapers. Therefore, I assume that this is so recognized.Moj Galeb (talk) 06:11, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, you write that IMDd is not a reliable source. However, I have read from other artists on the EN-Wiki pages that this reference has been acknowledged as a source. This you can for example read here: "Robert Budak - IMDb". m.imdb.com. Retrieved 31 January 2019. Moj Galeb (talk) 08:28, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

IMDb is not a reliable source because it is often user-generated, but occasionally we allow unchallenged basic facts from that database to be included if the subject already has three other independent WP:Reliable sources. I'm struggling to advise because I can't read Croatian. You might have to wait longer for an editor fluent in Croatian, or perhaps you could translate your best three sources? Dbfirs 08:48, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

If it takes longer is understandable. For me it is only important that the article will be not deleted. Can I ask a Croatian online newspaper to publish this in English? With important facts? will this be better and faster recognized? Or can I wait until this is approved? Moj Galeb (talk) 09:23, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

I've made a couple of changes that I think were intended in translation. Please make sure that all statements are supported by references. Dbfirs 12:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Josip Zovko was buried at the cemetery Sveti Ante in Lokvičići on April 6th. More than ″500″ friends and showmates attended his funeral.[citation needed] [20]

It may not be mentioned in the reference. The question is, if statements of present persons are not interpreted as a reference?

In the given reference you can see in the picture that there were many and thus numerous people. Change 500 in numerous. Since I was at the funeral, I can attest to this with the numbers.Moj Galeb (talk) 16:48, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, I adapted the sources. I have translated the quotes in English. Request for feedback.Moj Galeb (talk) 15:37, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

How do I responding to an editor threatening to block

Hello Teahouse,

I wish to refute the response provided by user Nishidani below on the Elhaik Wikipedia web page , but cannot be because that user is no longer classed as active on Talk. I am being threatened with blockage as an edit war by Doug Weller if I edit again the Elhaik page. I wish to proceed by the correct route, so please tell me how to do that. Thanks. Calling attention to biased/contentious editing?

The page for IfNotNow was edited on August 24 2019 to include a lot of information that seems to violate neutral point of view. This page is related to the Arab/Israeli conflict, and thus is subject to editing restrictions. No one has raised this on the talk page, and I'm a little hesitant about how to do so (I am not able to edit the page myself, nor do I think that I should be the person who edits it). I'm not sure whether this would qualify as vandalism (and thus a candidate for reversion) or if it's more complex. Any guidance on how to approach this would be helpful. Leyarburns (talk) 18:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello Leyarburns. It is okay to start that conversation on that page. Be bold. Anyone can edit anything, with some restrictions. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 18:12, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Biography of a Living Person

I am trying to make a page for my boss as a tribute to his genius and contribution to the world of science. I am having trouble finding reliable sources and would like to know if anyone has suggestions on usable sources for wikipedia regarding his accomplishments, publications, honors, etc. I would like to take some information from his CV, does that count? what about information on his family and early life? What "reliable sources" could I use there? New to wikipedia and am looking for some guidance as I would like to keep the page within wiki guidelines.

Thanks!

Carlatocchini (talk) 17:31, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

@Carlatocchini: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. First, since you are writing about a subject with whom you have a personal connection, you should be aware that you have a conflict of interest. By any chance, are you being paid to write this article? For information regarding reliable sources, please take a look at Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Something from his CV would be considered neither reliable nor independent. Wikipedia has a strict policy regarding biographies (especially those of living persons), and if you are having trouble finding reliable sources about him, he may not be notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. This does not mean that he is not important; it just means that he does not meet the strict guideline that the Wikipedia community has set. William2001(talk) 17:57, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
@William2001:, @Carlatocchini: An inquiry regarding Dr. Alan B. Scott was posted here, 20:25 of 29 August 2019, by Jmm1947. I read the Teahouse post, looked at the existing article, and then made a number of edits to *expand* this worthy scientist's article. Dr. Scott discovered and developed botulinum toxin, which treats a number of serious medical conditions, in addition to wrinkles.
Afterwards, I posted a request for further assistance to Jmm1947's TP, (answered by Carlatocchini),and will take responsibility for adding a list of publications, etc., to the existing article. I also explained, there, about WP:COI, etc., prior to this edit. Thanks, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 19:01, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Contrast good on User:Mac_Henni/infinity_day?

The Infinity day userbox I created got put into the auto category for user boxes with low contrast. I am wondering if that situation was fixed with the latest edit. Thanks, and any help is appreciated. Mac Henni (talk) 17:50, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Mac Henni: welcome to the Teahouse. It certainly looks a lot more contrasty now than it did before. You can see from posts directly above and below this one how hard some poorly contrasting blocks of text and colour are to read without perfect eyesight and/or a big monitor. It's an easy trap to fall in to. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

The Plain English is a natural programming language.

Hello Wikipedia editors!

Again:

I tried to improve the article Natural-language programming talking about the Plain English, a programming language that is a subset of a natural language because this article is incomplete.

Reference: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Natural-language_programming#

extended content

Please add the phrase "Plain English, a programming language that is a subset of a natural language" in first paragraph of article Natural-language programming:

Natural-language programming (NLP) is an ontology-assisted way of programming in terms of natural-language sentences, e.g. English.[1] A structured document with Content, sections and subsections for explanations of sentences forms a NLP document, which is actually a computer program. Natural languages and natural-language user interfaces include Inform7, a natural programming language for making interactive fiction, Ring,[2][3] a general-purpose language, Shakespeare, an esoteric natural programming language in the style of the plays of William Shakespeare, Wolfram Alpha, a computational knowledge engine, using natural-language input.[citation needed] and Plain English, a programming language that is a subset of a natural language. Some methods for program synthesis are based on natural-language programming.[4]

I can't link to www.osmosian.com, the Plain English Programming site.

The reference of the Plain English Programming is www.osmosian.com.

Wikipedia editors,

Please add the link to www.osmosian.com, the Plain English Programming site in External links, it is relevant to the article because this article is incomplete, the Plain English is a natural programming language.

Plain English programmers are already programming at a human-language level. The main routine in the sample program in our instruction manual, for example, looks like this...

To run:

Start up.

Initialize our stuff.

Handle any events.

Finalize our stuff. Shut down. ...and those are the kind of sentences that English-speaking humans use when they are speaking to other English-speaking humans.

Again:

Wikipedia editors,

Will you add this editings? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jorge Luis899 (talkcontribs) 22:12, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Jorge Luis899 please stop putting this material here. It does not belong in the Teahouse. You have been told how (and where) to open a discussion about the article. But please note the principle of Verifiability: Wikipedia does not care what you know or think (or what I know or think, or what any random person on the internet knows or thinks): it is only interested in what has been published in reliable sources, preferably sources independent of the subject of the material. --ColinFine (talk) 22:56, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Jorge Luis899: You've tried to edit the article yourself, and have been reverted multiple times. Editors have left you instructions on your talk page. The group you are trying to promote by adding to the article doesn't appear to be notable, and its web site is promotional. This appears to be a case of WP:NOTHERE. Please discuss and find consensus on the article talk page or you will find your editing blocked for being disruptive. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:00, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

I think someone abuses their power.

Hello guys. I'm very happy and honored to have been invited in the Teahouse. Thanks for that first.

Secondly, I'd like to continue by stating that there's currently an experienced editor on Wikipedia (let's call him Mister X) whom I think is over using their power by posting threats on other new and often unexperienced contributors' talk page, in these threats, they stipulate that they are vandals and literally THREATENS to block them from editing. I know, I know, but wait, some of you guys at the tea house will say that maybe these contributors have done something wrong but no. In reality all they do is try to add more content on Mister X's favorite artist page who is Ariana Grande. And I truly think that they do that because they think that they are the only one who should edit that page. They also revert EVERY edits for no reasons, even sometimes those edits are correct.

I'm saying this because I've received the same threats on my talk page in the "Ariana Grande" topic. Plus I've seen this editor do the same to at least three other new contributors for no reasons. I've seen the victims defend themselves and Mister X would never answer the question asked to him.

With that being said, what should I do? Please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iambacknimbetter (talkcontribs) 23:11, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Iambacknimbetter: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Generally, users are allowed to warn other users. However, if a user is incorrectly labeling good(-faith) edits as vandalism, then we have a problem. It would be more helpful if you could tell us who this "Mister X" is? Thanks. William2001(talk) 23:17, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Perhaps it is @Fan4Life:, who left a message on your talk page that you mentioned? William2001(talk) 23:24, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Iambacknimbetter, the place to raise disputes about other editors' behavior is at WP:ANI. That having been said, it doesn't appear to me that the other editor on Ariana Grande has done anything wrong; you replaced content cited to a reliable source with content cited to a less recent, less reliable source, and they reverted you. Following the revert, they placed a warning template on your talk page. A warning template is not a threat, (with the possible exception of the level-4 warning, which they did not use) it is a notice that an editor found your behavior to be out of line or unconstructive. The other editor involved in this dispute is not an admin, and has no power to block you themselves (although repeated failures to heed warnings could result in an admin stepping in). The correct response to a warning is to either take note of its suggestion and adjust your behavior, or calmly discuss it with the editor who placed the warning. Yelling at them on their talk page, however, is uncivil behavior, which could result in consequences.
I would suggest taking a step back for a bit until you can write about this issue without resorting to WP:SHOUTING. If you still think that your edits were appropriate and should be reinstated, start a discussion on Talk:Ariana Grande. If you still think that the other editor has an intractable behavioral problem, start a thread at ANI, although I sincerely doubt that anything good will come of this third option. signed, Rosguill talk 23:36, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
User Rosguill gives you an important resource, namely the ANI, but before posting there, please take a look at these links (from the ANI website): Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and Wikipedia:Civility#responding to incivility. Thanks. William2001(talk) 23:49, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
that second link should probably be Wikipedia:Civility#Dealing with incivility signed, Rosguill talk 23:52, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@William2001: Yes it's then actually I cited reliable source and they reverted by giving plain excuses by saying that " she made sure that she wasn't living in NYC anymore" without citing any links. Secondly, he then called my edit vandalism for no apparent reason labeling it as "bad faith" etc. There was no need to do that. They estimate that I made a mistake, that's okay. But they shouldn't call me a vandal and I think that it's power abuse.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Iambacknimbetter (talkcontribs)

@Rosguill: secondly you. I didn't mean to have a harmful behavior. I didn't know you could hear my scream through my screen. then, I think that he does that with every single person who decides to edit the page and call it vandalism with everyone which is why I think it's abuse. After, I'd like to say that I didn't mean to create a dispute here. I was simply here to ask QUESTIONS. Please read the last sentence of my message. I was simply explaining the context and then asking for solutions. I didn't mean to start a war or anything of that kind. Please don't say that.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Iambacknimbetter (talkcontribs)

I apologize for any offense. That having been said, having reviewed the edit history for Ariana Grande and the other editors editing the page, I disagree with your assessment that he does that with every single person who decides to edit the page and call it vandalism with everyone. signed, Rosguill talk 00:05, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@Rosguill: He does that with literally everyone just give it a deeper look. I can even name a FEW people who have received these messages after having their edits reverted although they cited RELIABLE sources— Preceding unsigned comment added by Iambacknimbetter (talkcontribs)

Rename or delete own user create sandbox

Hi,

Can a user rename or delete their own sandbox? Example, I have a sandbox named as sandbox2, I would like to rename to user:flipchip73/Arthur Philip Talbot. Please advise if any. Thanks. Flipchip73 (talk) 02:06, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi Flipchip73, welcome to the Teahouse. You are free to move your subpages. See Help:How to move a page. Pages can only be deleted by administrators. For a user subpage like a sandbox you can request it with {{db-u1}} or {{db-g7}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:29, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi PrimeHunter, I assume that what the article on Help:How to move a page meant is the user can move a page. For my case, my sandbox2 page can only be rename if I move it to user:flipchip73/Arthur Philip Talbot. But user:flipchip73/sandbox2 will still be physically in my user:flipchip73 subpage. Unless I request for {{db-u1}} or {{db-g7}} for my user:flipchip73/sandbox2, it will then be "deleted". Am I right in the interpretation? Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again. Flipchip73 (talk) 08:30, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
If you move the page from user:flipchip73/sandbox2 to user:flipchip73/Arthur Philip Talbot, sandbox2 will exist, but only as a redirect to Arthur Philip Talbot. If you don't want sandbox2 to redirect users to the new name, you can then tag the redirect for deletion, or just blank the page and continue to use it for other sandbox uses. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 09:22, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
@Flipchip73: Yes, both content and page history would be at the new name. A "move" is just our term for a rename. It automatically leaves a redirect at the old name. See Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects for how to access a redirect for editing. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:10, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter and OxonAlex: Thank you to both of you for giving the advices and info. This give me a better picture of what to do in the future to prevent extra work for the admin (to delete subpage(s)) and for me to think before creating new subpages. Flipchip73 (talk) 02:47, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hey, I added an edit on a page , and I also described what I did, but the edit was deleted afterwards. Can anyone explain why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZenSaikara (talkcontribs) 07:40, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

ZenSaikara Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You may want to ask the user who removed your edit directly(which you can find in the article's edit history), but it appears to me that it was removed because it cited a wiki type website as a source. This is not usually permitted, as wikis are user-editable and as such are not reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 07:45, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Crurkpound Entertainment

How can I do to be available if for someone check me in this sit? I want to be visible when they search Crurkpound Entertainment, not user:cCrurkpound entertainment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crurkpound (talkcontribs) 04:46, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@Crurkpound: Our notability policy applies to companies and organisations, too. Thus, Draft:Cruckpound Entertainment would not only have to have some actual content (plus uniform spelling of your company's name), it would critically have to include at least three independent, in-depth references to sources which have written about your company. See this notability guideline for businesses. Because you are connected with the company, you would also have a Conflict of Interest and should declare it according to the instructions in the hyperlink I've just given. Then you would be obligated to declare that you are WP:PAID by the company as an employee or owner. And then you would have to change your username (by simply creating a new account) as we do not permit promotional usernames, or accounts that suggest more than one person edits from it. All in all, trying to use Wikipedia to promote a non-notable business or person can be an uphill struggle which, without good citations, cannot be achieved. Regards from the UK. How to improve my draft

Hello. Please let me know how to improve my draft:Draft:Susumu Nishibe. Thanks.

Hello Nishibe0121, and welcome to the Teahouse. I saw your draft and it was declined yesterday (in my time). Your draft doesn’t show how the subject is notable. For a subject to be notable, it must be covered by multiple third-party reliable sources. Please also read WP:NBIO. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 23:48, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Actually, Wahhabism (which I think you meant), is a derivation of Sunni Islam. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 16:16, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Wahhabism has plenty of sources, so I don't think you'll get much agreement on WP that it doesn't exist. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:41, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
And there are similarly many sources that thisis the version of Islamic law that is followed in contemporary Saudi Arabia. DGG ( talk ) 00:41, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Maybe this is about Wahhabism#Naming controversy: Wahhabis, Muwahhidun, and Salafis. Regardless what people think of the name, Wahhabism has millions of Google hits and the English Wikipedia uses the common English name for subjects. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:29, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

About Articles

I have posted my articles many times, They all Rejected. Why?? They all were according to Wikipedia's policy. I didn't get your rejecting reasons? i have posted my article so many times at first they deleted by saying your article is promotional. then i posted it again with correcting every single thing, then they had an issue with my user name. that use a username according to your region, and any name i write (of my region) they reject it by saying it is already taken.

now tell me please how can I post my article by any username, or suggest me some valid username from your side, and also tell me how can I post my Company's article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alberto Sparrow (talkcontribs) 10:44, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello Alberto Sparrow, welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid I don't see any notes on your user talk page to indicate that you submitted a draft which has been rejected. Normally you would receive a message explaining why your draft did not meet our criteria for acceptance. Did you do so with this account, or under a different name? You haven't given us enough information to answer your question. However, your user page itself was promoting something which is not acceptable on Wikipedia and so was deleted. Are you referring to that? Nick Moyes (talk) 10:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Oh, I should add that the best way to submit an article is via the Articles for Creation Wizard. This lets you work on a draft and to gather sufficient good quality references to demonstrate Notability before submitting it for review. As we aren't a free webhosting service to help anyone promote their business or themselves, we require each new topic to demonstrate that our notability criteria have been met. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:04, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

yes! I did with this account or another. Yes! i have added all the references or external links that required. But now they have issue with my user page that they didn't get it. Or another issue is that "Misuse of Wikipedia as a web host. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alberto Sparrow (talkcontribs) 11:22, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps you could tell us what other account you used? There is some good advice on your talk page for this account: User talk:Alberto Sparrow. Dbfirs 12:22, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Mass Senders

May someone explain to me the criteria of becoming a Mass Sender?

Regards, Razorrrr!!! --RazorTheDJ (talk) 11:33, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@RazorTheDJ: Welcome to the Teahouse! What you meant was a Mass Message Sender. Someone in the user group of Mass Message Sender can send multiple emails to others at once. You can request the right on your talk page. Just follow the directions for doing so at WP:MMS. You will also find more info there. Hope this helps. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 12:44, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
@RazorTheDJ: Let me correct something from the answer above. To request the permission, go to Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Mass message sender, but please read WP:MMS before you do that. Interstellarity (talk) 13:43, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello. a tea house. Hello. How do i become a Wikipedia writer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by IndusFish (talkcontribs) 13:34, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@IndusFish: It's so easy!! :-) Just make edits to any article that interests you and you already are a writer. Check out WP:TWA or WP:TUTORIAL for a basic guide to contributing. Interstellarity (talk) 13:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

article about a film

hello guys,

I am the film director of Letters from the Pamirs documentary. The film received a grand prix in Kyrgyzstan, and was screened at festivals in France and Czech Republic.

Is it a notable topic?

If i don't write this article, nobody will.

Please let me know.

Regards.

@Janylj: Before you start a new article, I must point out that you have a conflict of interest with this topic. You must disclose this on your user page. See WP:NF for notability criteria for the film. Interstellarity (talk) 13:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Help me

I am creating an artist page for myself and I need guidance on formatting my bio/ finding the correct template to use. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stefan Poole (talkcontribs) 03:06, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

  • Hello Mr. Poole,
Creating an article on yourself is highly discouraged by Wikipedia. However, if you feel strongly like you need an article on here and you pass Wikipedia's notability guidelines, you may create a draft of yourself entitled "Draft:Stefan Poole" or keep doing what you've been doing on your userpage and when you're done with it submit it to Articles for Creation for experienced users to look at, give feedback on, and potentially approve. In general, however, it's best to wait for someone else to create the article, which will eventually happen if you're notable enough. Welcome to Wikipedia, and I hope you have a good time here!
John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 03:21, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Hello, Stefan Poole. To enlarge on what John Wolfson has said: it looks as if, like many people, you have a fundamental misconception of what Wikipedia is. It is not social media. It is not a directory. It does not form part of anybody's online presence (or, if they choose to use it in that way they are taking a risk, as I'll explain in a moment). It does not contain "artist pages" or "band pages" or "company pages". It is an encyclopaedia, and it contains articles about notable subjects. If at some point Wikipedia has an article about you, it will not be your article: you will not have control of what goes into the article (though you will be welcome to suggest edits to it). Material you wanted in the article would not necessarily be there, and conversely there might be material you did not want in the article, but if it met Wikipedia's criteria for verifiability and importance, it would be there. (Do you see why I said it might be risky making it part of anyone's online presence?). If you are here to help us improve this remarkable project, welcome! If you are here only to promote your career (= "tell the world about yourself") then I'm afraid you will not have a satisfying experience as a Wikipedia editor. --ColinFine (talk) 14:14, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi again, is there another corner on enwiki where you can observe possible vandalism apart from the Recent Changes? --RazorTheDJ (talk) 13:44, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

This section in WP:VANDALISM may be what you're looking for. Interstellarity (talk) 13:46, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
@Interstellarity: Thanks so much for your assistance. --RazorTheDJ (talk) 13:50, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hello again. Some things I can think of are:
  • New page patrol. By requesting the right at WP:PERM and being added after, you can look for inappropriate drafts.
  • Pending changes. Having that right enables you to review edits before they can be seen by the public.

I hope this answers your question. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 13:50, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks too @LPS and MLP Fan: RazorTheDJ (talk) 13:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
So, how do you get the right to accept revisions from ip's? -RazorTheDJ (talk) 14:08, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
@RazorTheDJ: While I do not have that right, I can explain it to you. There are some pages under pending changes protection due to vandalism. A Pending Changes Reviewer can see the changes an IP or new user makes, and can accept that reversion if it is not vandalism. You can request for that right at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Pending changes reviewer. LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop) (My Little Pony) 14:14, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Help - I need to validate my alternate account

I first posted this on Wikipedia talk:Sock puppetry, but since nobody replied, I'm trying this space now. I'm User:Alumnum and I created this separate account because, for personal reasons, I'm temporarily unable to access my main one. Can some admin please confirm I'm the same IP as User:Alumnum to avoid any future blocks? Once I obtain access to my main account back, I will abandon this one. - Munmula (talk) 01:38, 30 August 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Munmula (talkcontribs) 04:23, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Munmula, Hi! I can't find anywhere that says that's necessary. Having multiple accounts isn't illegal, pretending to be different persons is. I suggest you follow the methods mentioned at WP:ALTACCN to clarify the fact that this is your alternate account. Unless the original account comes back and says you are lying, nobody needs to verify anything. What you need to take absolute care about is that nobody think you are two different people in a discussion where you have already commented from another account. So, perhaps add your original account as a part of your signature, something to the effect of "Munmula, Alumnum's alternative account" and link it to the userpage where you have clarified the who and why of your multiple accounts. Regards! Usedtobecool TALK  06:36, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation! In fact I was wondering if I could get blocked if an admin caught me using two different accounts. I have made the necessary changes now. - Munmula (talk), second account of Alumnum 16:11, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Timezone conversions?

Hi. Is there any way I can convert Wikipedia's UTC times to my EST times? Melofors (talk) 00:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Melofors. You can use {{UTC}}, as long as you know to update the template after Daylight Savings, which, in your case, would be from {{UTC|-4}} (which is what you are at now) to {{UTC|-5}}. JTP (talkcontribs) 02:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Welcome to the Teahouse, Melofors. I'm not sure that NotTheFakeJTP's answer quite gave you what you sought. If you go to Special:Preferences and then Gadgets, you'll see two tick boxes you can select in the 'Appearance' section. The first simply puts a UTC clock display at the top of your page, but the second is labelled: Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures...etc Select this, and I think it loads a script which converts how talk page times appear to you. I've not tried it myself as here in the uk we're only out by one hour from UTC for 6 months of the year. But I do find the little UTC clock to be a useful reminder of wikitime. Hope this helps, Nick Moyes (talk) 08:31, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
@Melofors: You can also set your time zone at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. This affects the time shown in page histories, user contributions and many other places where the time is a log entry. It does not affect times saved in the wikitext, e.g. in signatures or in articles saying when something happens. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:14, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you! Melofors (talk) 16:47, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Fair use

Hi everyone,

I have just created an article on a political activist. I would like to insert a screenshot of him taken from a YouTube video. Would that be considered fair use on the English WP? Thanks, --Hijadealgo (talk) 16:03, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Almost certainly not, I'm afraid, Hijadealgo. En wiki maintains its own, stricter, conditions for fair use images, all of which must be met: see WP:NFCC. Number 1 implies that an image of a living person can almost never be used in this way. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 17:05, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi! Kindly I create a revised version of Philippine name template with your permission coming from you??? RenRen070193 (talk) 16:34, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, RenRen070193. That's not how Wikipedia works: we work on consensus, not permission. Please study WP:BRD for how this works:
  1. You were bold and made a change that you thought improved Wikipedia.
  2. User Babymissfortune disagreed, and reverted your change.
  3. (after a suggestion here, I think) you began to discuss the change at Template talk:Philippine name.
This is absolutely the right way to do it, with one important omission: you did not ping Babymissfortune to tell them you were opening a discussion. (I have pinged them here). Since it was that user that reverted your change, a discussion that they do not know about is not really satisfactory. Now that they know you have opened up a discussion, they can decide what to do. They might decide that they are happy with your change, and not comment. Or they may join the discussion to argue why they do not think the change should be made. Other editors might join in the discussion (that might already have happened - but the talk page has been viewed only 18 times in its entire history, so not many people look at it. For that reason, I suggest you also leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Tambayan Philippines asking for input to the discussion.)
In the end, the editors who get involved in the discussion (whoever they are) will either reach agreement (which might be what you want, or what we have at the moment, a compromise, or a completely different solution) or they will be unable to reach agreement, in which case dispute resolution tells them how to proceed. --ColinFine (talk) 17:32, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Moving page from Draft to Article

I have been waiting for my article to be approved in Draft mode for 4 weeks now. May I move it to the Article page or do I need to wait 8 weeks?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DocNerd3000 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, DocNerd3000, and welcome to the Teahouse. You are allowed to move it to article space - the AFC process is entirely voluntary - but if you do it may get deleted. I am not a reviewer, and have only had a quick look, but you have far too many low-grade citations, especially for the length of the article. I got bored looking through them, hoping to find an example where somebody wholly unconnected with the film has chosen to publish at length about it, in a reliable place. (I'm not saying there aren't any: I just gave up looking). Without them the article does not establish that the film is notable. and the draft will not be accepted.
My advice is to remove every source that is not independent (anything published by www.californiasforgottenchildren.com, but also anything that is simply reporting their words in an interview or press release); and any unreliable source such as iMDB. If that leaves any statements in the draft unsourced, then take those out too. Then, (assuming you are left with some solid independent sources) write the article based on what those sources say.
I have no doubt that the film is a very worthy project: but that does not contribute to being notable in Wikipedia's sense. In order to be of any value, Wikipedia articles must be referenced to high-quality sources, independent of the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 21:30, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

deletion protest ignored - article deleted why?

Hi, I'm in shock. Until yesterday I've not had anything like this happen - no real clock as to when or why? I have a previous piece here, but can't find it. a piece I had been working to try and fix is now gone and the deletion person is not responding... looks like this person's job is to just go around and delete things even though I believe that I had filed the proper protest and was here trying to get help. But then when I'm in the middle sorting out what was a major 2 part issue, the real world impinged and I had to get help for the older gentleman I take care of that took me away from dealing with this for 3 hours on a friday! As soon as I got back I noticed a new warning deletion message by another person. I immediately did what the warning said and filed a protest in the box offered. I then went to the article and deleted the disputed material as well. A short time ago the entire piece was deleted and the many hours of work that I had put in.

this is the piece that was deleted! Draft:Securities and Exchange Commission v. Electric Bond and Share company

I don't know how to find the teahouse discussion as I'm new at this, but at this point, it would appear that this system is highly unfriendly, or in this case feels alot like making a phone call to AT&T to get a simple fix. Three hours later, some hacker in Russia has taken over, robbed me of my bank account. Apologies, but I've now been trying to sort this out for 2 hours and can't believe that I've wasted an entire week of my time, and entire evening. Energynet (talk) 08:25, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately, as pointed out on your user talk page, copyright violations have to be deleted from Wikipedia - it is one of the very few really hard-and-fast rules that exist here. Contesting the deletion does not automatically mean that the deletion process will be halted. You asked the deleting administrator about it a little over 15 minutes ago, so it's unclear what you mean by "the deletion person is not responding" - like you and me and everybody else here, the administrator is a volunteer and there is no obligation to respond within a few minutes, like you might expect from a professional help desk. --bonadea contributions talk 08:36, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

thank you for the link. On the issue at hand...

as pointed out over at

Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2019 August 31

This is clearly not a copyright issue! Someone labeled it that way while the piece was in draft status and still being worked on! The material had also been deleted and a protest filed after the warning was posted. The individual who then deleted it ignored my protest which was what I meant by not responding to me. - The content in question was a 1938 US supreme court decision and with me getting help on at the Teahouse when it was deleted. please see the above protest on this.

Why shouldn't there be some kind of time warning on this? I acted immediately but the person that deleted it or the system didn't give a time warning other than the word speedy which I had no idea of what this meant. The fact that this happened so fast and that I was also and still am dealing with a medical emergency in the real world which was also ignored just doesn't sound fair! And the fact that the original person that claimed that it was a copyright abuse never came back or responded and then this other guy sees the warning - neither look at the actual content or see that its a federal court decision and bang! I lose all of my work? Yeah, volunteer but what happens when someone loses a week of volunteer work?

The fact that with support that I'm actually going to get some relief on this with the piece returned to me so that I can finish getting it onto the site after such a horrible 10 hours would make any new user never want to be involved again! I truly can't believe how this happened so fast and so late at night! I was up 2 hours beyond bed time in shock and I'm heading towards 68 years old - and have had to suspend everything today so far, in terror that if I don't respond immediately that it will just die in some kind of huge pile of protests etc. Energynet (talk) 17:57, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello Energynet, sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. Speedy deletions do not have any ticking clocks. They could literally be deleted right before your eyes, before you could click the contesting button even if you were waiting in ambush. This is because speedy deletion is supposed to be used for the kinds of completely rubbish material that the community has previously agreed there is no point in wasting time discussing about. The protection against wrongful deletion is simply that editors are supposed to exercise caution before tagging an article for speedy and admins are supposed to do the same before acting on them. When mistakes are made, because no one's perfect, we have provisions to get back the work, by contacting the deleting admin, asking them to have a second look, or through the formal deletion review.
As far as I can see, you have taken the remedies, and it seems certain that you'll get back your work if you haven't already. In my opinion, the added best you can get in this case is the rebuke that the editors involved in nominating and deleting your draft are getting at the deletion review process. Of course, these actions are also logged in their contributions history and may be used as evidence in the future. You can visit WP:ANI to see the kind of discussions that occur and the amount of evidence over long term that is gathered and considered in bringing/evaluating a case against an editor. This is a global project and not all editors can be expected to know all the copyright exceptions in any particular country. And by the same token, while it's ghost hour for one editor, it could be peak performance time for another. What should definitely have happened, though, was once you'd notified the involved editors of the mistake, you should have received a quick reimbursement with an apology. Why didn't get a courteous/humble reply is anyone's guess.
I do believe what happened with your draft was a one in thousands rarity. You could try and contact the nominating editor and tell them that you wish they'd been more careful, and see how that goes. Finally, yes, I agree that some of the stuff in this project gives the impression of urgency that's not really there and is frustrating and confusing to new editors. I have had the same kind of experience when I was new. But I have come to realise this is the kind of work that's never complete and that there are no deadlines for anything. People are constantly coming up with ideas to make editing a better experience for all editors, old and new. Regards! Usedtobecool TALK  19:42, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your support and well written details... something like this should go into every frightened/bewildred person like what happened to me so that I was not up way late in terror that nobody would see what happened etc.

Page Title: Draft: Tolu' A. Akinyemi

Can you kindly confirm if the revision on this page meets your expectations?

As I have not heard back over 3 months now?

Many Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joyinbabe (talkcontribs) 17:19, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Joyinbabe. If you look at the bottom of the submission box at the top of Draft:Tolu' A. Akinyemi, it says clearly "This draft has been resubmitted and is currently awaiting re-review." The time that this will take is unpredictable: Wikipedia is a volunteer project, and people work on what they choose to work on. But coming here and hectoring people to review it is not likely to be effective. If you are getting impatient, you could spend some time editing some others of our six million articles: many of them need it badly! --ColinFine (talk) 18:18, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi Joyinbabe. There are so many drafts waiting for re-review that reviewers skip difficult ones. Yours has two very common problems that we see. First, the inline references go only in the text. Don't add them at the end. The software takes care of showing them at the bottom of the page. Take out all those extra references. Second, there are too many references for a reviewer to look at. With the extras at the end your article has 57 references. To show that the subject is notable we need to be able to see he meets WP:NAUTHOR by having at least three sources that have significant amounts of material about him, are published in reliable sources, and are independent of the subject (not press releases or interviews). Pick out those three sources. Rewrite the article using those as the references. StarryGrandma (talk) 19:54, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
