Request: Redraw as SVG. Plus create a new SVG file by changing the colour of the dragon from gold to black and the colour of the flag border from gold to black too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.18.71.45 (talkcontribs) 11:11, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We need more specific instructions. Do you want a solid Black Dragon (which means recolouring, and maybe changing borders etc. to a light grey/white so they are still visible, or just a monochrome (black and white) version of the colour file? Sorry if that sounds obtuse, but I'm not sure what you're trying to do here. Begoontalk 15:38, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Recolouring only the golden parts of the dragon as black as well as recolouring the borders on the dragon to light grey/white so they are still visible, etc. I also want the gold line going around the border of the flag changed to black too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.18.71.45 (talkcontribs)

Hawaii signatures

Article(s): John Edward Bush, Kekūanāoa, Henry E. Cooper, William Luther Moehonua, Kekāuluohi, Kalanimoku, Don Francisco de Paula Marín, Boki (Hawaiian chief)

Request: Please clean up these images and remove any extra letterings not part of the signature. Then vectorize these signatures and name them the same name with svg on the end. KAVEBEAR (talk) 18:52, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Boki done. Quite a number of the others are of rather low resolution, though. Do you know of any higher resolution copies? Martinor (talk) 03:57, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No I don't have any. Could you do Henry Cooper's signature, clean the original and vectorize it?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:49, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've made an attempt at it (see gallery). The source file did not have sufficient resolution (effective signature ~40x60px), and much of the signature is obscured by similar colored noise. The result is poor, and most damningly, many aspects of it was my interpretation. While it is now "clean" and "resolution independent", it is very much my drawing and is removed from a signature of HC. I recommend against using this in Wikipedia.
Well If you don't think it should be used, could you delete it then? Sorry for the bother.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:42, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As to the rest of the requests, much of it is of a similar nature, where the information content is simply too low to have anything done with it. This takes place either in large file size but very poor quality/blurry/grainy scans, or very small images. The requests were outstanding for several months because they are almost impossible to do well. Jon C (talk) 06:04, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Really? How about the signatures for Kekauluohi, Keoni Kiwini, and Boaz Mahune? They are really high resolutions.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:37, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They're larger files, but I personally consider them low quality scans where lines fade in and out. Others might bite... Jon C (talk) 18:34, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

International space station altitude chart

Unfortunately I don't. If I knew where to get that, I probubly wouldn't have to bother you guys with this. The source of the graphs is heavens-above.com. --U5K0'sTalkMake WikiLove not WikiWar 15:29, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment The screengrabs from heavens-above we can use without distraction caused by copyright. Chris Peat, the owner of the copyright (and website) has given me written permission to 'use any material' from his site, such as the images such as the images I added to the Heavens-Above article and I reasonably expect he would respond positively if any clarification is required. I have written asking him in regards to the raw data, and await his response. Penyulap talk 05:48, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

no response from Chris Peat as yet. I'd suggest going ahead with it is a good idea, if there is interest. Penyulap talk 04:25, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Still no response from Chris Penyulap talk 15:52, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Response from Chris Chris says the chart of the ISS height comes from his database of historical orbital elements. When he downloads a new set of elements from the Spacetrack web site, the old ones are archived, not discarded. He suggests you can also request historical data from the Spacetrack site directly. Penyulap talk 04:21, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've requested an account with Spacetrack. I'll report back if my application goes through. Jon C (talk) 06:21, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Data: So I've acquired an account on Spacetrack, and queried for ISS (1998-067A; cat# 25544). It spits (large volumes of) raw data, which I suppose someone could write code to parse --- but nowhere in that data do I see altitude. Is it referred to by another name? Jon C (talk) 12:13, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unsure. It's true that there would be tons of data there and that's something I would expect that they would track. The Haz talk 02:25, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If anyone wants to look at what the satellite data contains, the data format is shown on this page. Jon C (talk) 09:09, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Orbit data is described in Orbital elements. Basically, the ellips is described in some six parameters. -DePiep (talk) 13:54, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This website appears to take the TLE data, and calculate the satellite's altitude based on it. I don't know how easy this calculation is; probably mean anomaly and mean motion are all you need for a good approximation (both of which are given in the data).. but I'm not sure. Mlm42 (talk) 17:18, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Working backwards through that javascript source, the height is in position 40 of the output array, namely the calculated orbit radius (relative to the centre of the earth) minus the equatorial radius of the Earth. The orbit radius is the length of the hypotenuse of the triangle described by X0 and Y0 components of the perifocal coordinate system. X0 is calculated as semimajor axis * cos(E) - eccentricity. Y0 is calculated as semimajor axis * sqrt(1 - eccentricity^2) * sin(E).... Things get a little more complicated from here for this time of the night, I might pick it up again later. gringer (talk) 01:14, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): List of active separatist movements in Europe

Request: Colour Yorkshire in a different colour, as it also has an independence movement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 154.50.194.2 (talkcontribs)

Graphist opinion(s):

Is there consensus in the article talk page (or elsewhere) that colouring Yorkshire (rather than perhaps anywhere else too? Wessex? Ulster? or nowhere else?) is best for the purposes of the article? Begoontalk 12:16, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just adding an additional note that the filename is incorrectly spelt. It should probably be moved to File:Map of separatist movements in UK.svg, or maybe File:Map of separatist movements in the UK.svg, if it is to be used. I fixed the same spelling error in the article for you, here: [1] Thanks. Begoontalk 12:21, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the map is to be of any use, it needs to show all the separatist areas in the British Isles, and replace the current misspelled entry. It would then fit with the Spanish and French maps in the article. Are you guys able to do that based on the info in the article, or do you need some data as to where Wessex and Yorkshire are? Elen of the Roads (talk) 14:47, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, the above was more musing than a request. If I were asking, I'd ask over at the map page. Elen of the Roads (talk) 16:52, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm musing too, really. I'm not even sure it adds much to that list article as it is. I've removed it from the article and started a talk page discussion. It's not much use as it is, and it needs a much clearer plan before it gets requested anywhere. Begoontalk 17:00, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Human body

Article(s): Human, Human anatomy, Human body

Request: See if you can do something with this that will help the text render without jpg artifacts. I'm thinking PNG or redraw as SVG (similar to what is used at File:Wiki-POV-pornography.png not safe for work). Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:29, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):   Done I think the artifacts are generated by the Mediawiki software no matter how large the jpg, so I opted for a png instead. I reduced the resolution considerably to keep the filesize down. There are no artifacts now but the text looks a little out of focus (except for the full-size image). Somehow I doubt that a larger image (3MB+ and 4000px+) wouldn't be subjected to the same blurring, though that is still an option. nagualdesign (talk) 11:09, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've used the new PNG here to see how it looks. It resizes okay but the writing's almost illegible on a 250x266 thumbnail. There's a 300px JPG thumb on the Human body page which is legible. You might want to try swapping it for the PNG and comparing the text yourself. Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 02:54, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not in a usual case like this, I think. Somewhere in the past I had a bunch of vectorized logos placed on deletion log, and they were kept after some discussion (and citing of policies). If anyone have a proper WikiPolicy for this, I'll setup a "relevant policy" page for graphists in my user space, so we can keep all these in close reference. 1. Please get rid of the horizontal/vertical line stuff under the liquidus line. (They are "correct", but offputting for a non P chemist. Labels above suffice to point to compounds.)

2. I will display at somewhere between thumb and 250 px. Please make font readable, without clickthrough.

3. I'm probably OK in layout space, but in general shorter-wider aspect works better for me. this is about square, which should be fine, but please at least don't make it taller.  ;)

Heh. I just drew a chart like this for a class I taught. Roentgenium electron shells

Article(s): Roentgenium

Request: Please change the electron shell diagram from 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 18, 1 to 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 17, 2. Double sharp (talk) 11:04, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): What the requester is asking is simply to move one sphere from the second outermost ring to the outermost ring, and correct the text label. This file opens crazy in Illustrator, so I'll defer the actual work to someone else :) Jon C (talk) 04:04, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done: The file was generated by an application, so I edited the source code. Here is a new version of the file on commons. I chose not to overwrite the old file, because I'm not sure that this new electronic conformation is widely accepted. It's up to the requester to decide. --Jeran Renz (talk) 01:13, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The old file has been overwritten, and that is fine with me. Double sharp (talk) 11:55, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania seals

 – Fry1989 eh?

Article(s): Pennsylvania-related articles

Request: Please recreate the following seals. This variant of the Governor's seal, the seal of the Attorney General, seal of the Department of Corrections, seal of the Department of Public Welfare, seal of the Inspector General and the seal of the court of judicial discipline. The major SVG elements needed are provided above, please use the coat of arms in full colour as in the above two seals. Thank you. Fry1989 eh? 20:00, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Four done. I can't read the bottom half of the alternate governor's one (does it say Pennsylvania?) and I could use some advice on a laurel for the Dept of Corrections. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:43, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The alternative Governor's seal says "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" looped around the bottom. As for the laurel, that's tricky. Fry1989 eh? 19:47, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How about those? I wasn't sure on colours for the Corrections one, so if you'd rather have it matched with the blues, be my guest. Equally, I made two versions of the governor's one - one with blue and one without - so take your pick! NikNaks talk - gallery 19:23, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, they look great. Fry1989 eh? 21:04, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 – NikNaks talk - gallery

Article(s): Amalienborg Palace

Request: Please can you translate the text labels into English:
1. Statue of Frederick V
2. Levetzau's Palace
3. Brockdorff's Palace
4. Schack's Palace
5. Moltke's Palace
6. Amaliehaven
7. Frederik's Church (The Marble Church)

Thanks. Peter (Talk page) 03:55, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: Perhaps it could be coverted into an svg image, if that's possible? Peter (Talk page) 03:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):   Done Text substitution. Given the original high resolution, I'm not sure that it's useful at this time to redraw the map into an SVG. Jon C (talk) 15:06, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I had a go! NikNaks talk - gallery 17:33, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I missed this, that's fantastic, I admire your skill. Actually (keep this one, it's great), I need more an outline, like you'd see in a coloring book (not for that, just being descriptive)-black and white, borders only, no filled in or grey.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 12:08, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is this more like it? NikNaks talk - gallery 21:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Two Ravidassia Religion images that a person would like to have transparent backgrounds

  Resolved
 – NikNaks talk - gallery

  Done

Article(s): User:McKinseies/Portal:Ravidassia

Request: Some person asking for help on IRC would like these two images to have transparent backgrounds; specifically, so that on the page User:McKinseies/Portal:Ravidassia, the pink colour shows through the "blank" sections of the first image, rather than being white, and the background of the second image is the same as the rest of the box it's in, rather than being the yellowish colour that's part of its current background.

It seems to me that the first image would benefit from being turned into a vector image rather than a bitmap anyway; I'm not sure about the second one.

The licenses for both images check out on flickr, that is to say they are genuine free images as far as can be ascertained. Whether the page they are being used on (User:McKinseies/Portal:Ravidassia) will stay around long term or not, I don't know for certain. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 12:45, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Please change the label "Group 3" to "Group 13". This is a correction. Double sharp (talk) 05:56, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Aluminium is grp 3. IT IS CORRECT--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 12:49, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Electron shell diagrams

  Resolved
 – NikNaks talk - gallery

Article(s): Meitnerium, Darmstadtium, Roentgenium, Ununtrium, Ununquadium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium, Ununseptium, Ununoctium

Request: Change the colours of the circles in the centre of the images to #e8e8e8 to fit the infoboxes. Also, change the electron shell diagram for roentgenium from 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 18, 1 to 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 17, 2. Double sharp (talk) 06:03, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The source for roentgenium is Turler, A. (2004). "Gas Phase Chemistry of Superheavy Elements" (PDF). Journal of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences. 5 (2): R19–R25.. Double sharp (talk) 06:05, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The roentgenium image can be overwritten with File:Electron shell 111 Roentgenium 17 2.svg. Double sharp (talk) 06:08, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): The center color is determined by List of elements not by color of infobox. As for the number, 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 17, 2 may be correct as you suggested. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 12:01, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
