I sent you an e-mail; this me (above), logged out, from a smartphone. Thanks for your comments; must really be wiki-burnout. Cheers 109.45.0.73 (talk) 16:12, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

I know the feeling - thank you for your attention to this. –xenotalk 16:14, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I will follow your advice and refrain from administrative actions for the time being. Thanks again.109.45.0.73 (talk) 16:19, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Belated Thx

Re: this bugzilla report, I am the former user who you helped back in February. I see the problem was finally cleaned up in July. Thanks for your attention to this matter as it would strangely gnaw at me every now and again knowing my contribs were spread between the two accts. Rgrds. --64.85.217.197 (talk) 16:08, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Glad to see you've sorted this out. –xenotalk 13:57, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

UBXRAND Help needed.

I am having difficulty getting the userboxes to work. Could you assist me?

P.S. What causes the lazy barnstar to appear or your header?—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 21:14, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

See [1]. num=x should be equal to the number of rows you are using.
You can't call userboxen that require parameters, like User:FastLizard4/Userboxing/BSOD2.
The lazy barnstar appears if the byte count of my userpage is below 500. There are parserFunctions contained in User talk:Xeno/header that make this work. –xenotalk 13:26, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I think I may be able to come up with a workaround that will allow me to call the parameter boxes. Your parser function is quite sophisticated now that I see how it works. My Userspace and my signature is a network of templates and syntax as you are already aware of and it's still building.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 14:03, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
You can create subpages in your userspace that call the userbox with the appropriate parameters, then use that page in the randomizer. That being said, try not to spend too much time or edits on your userspace or signature, especially if you want to one day successfully complete a request for adminship. Too much time spent on your userspace can give the impression that you are just 'myspacing' around rather than serious about building an encyclopedia. –xenotalk 14:21, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I am aware that I have more userspace edits for the moment. I am adding syntax to my pages so a bunch of stuff that I would have to do manually is performed automatically. I am also blank for ideas on possible articles I can create.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 14:39, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
How about improving an existing article on a topic that interests you? –xenotalk 16:18, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I would if I knew what interests me. Why does your randomizer only accept 32 parameters? Off topic, I've been checking out the parser functions that I could incorporate into my userspace to make it more automated. Is it possible to do an {{#ifeq:}} that tests to see if a number is greater than or less than a variable? If so how would you go about that? To make it easy how about just giving me an example if for...say...if 25 is less than x then do a else do b.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 02:46, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Because I didn't code for more... In any case, more than 32 boxes in a randomizer and you'll hardly ever see any one particular box.
My /header page uses this logic for the automagic lazy sleeping barnstar. –xenotalk 13:20, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
I've kind of assumed that. So I can use <, <=, >, >=, and !=? Do I have to make it recognize it as a variable?—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 13:35, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
See mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##expr. –xenotalk 13:40, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I will take a look at it once I am out of school. The school system blocks all Media Wiki sites and partially blocks Wikipedia severely limiting my performance on Wikipedia. Which is why my sig is orange at this time.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 14:06, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

It does prove helpful. The {{#ifexpr:}} can handle varibles when comparing and I am having difficulties working it. Apparently when using the {{days from now}} and the {{CURRENTYEAR}} templates, it seems to be throwing errors left and right. Do they not come out as variables and how can this be fixed?—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 13:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

How is this going to improve the encyclopedia? –xenotalk 13:57, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I am very detail oriented on how stuff has to work. Which is why I try to make page perfect and then leave it alone. Being that I am very busy in real life right now, going to school, getting ready for college and working, I barely have time to contribute significantly to articles which is why when I get the chance, I power through my watchlist and improve my userspace with syntax to automate certain features which will reduce the amount of edits I have to make in my userspace in the long run. These syntax codes will also save me time. Example: You are already aware that I convey my online status through colors in my signature and a header. Without syntax, I would have to change the header and signature color in order to convey my status. With syntax in the header, it changes automatically according to the color of my signature and when black or brown, a notice conveying my extended absence appears automatically. Those syntax codes reduces my editcount to my userspace by 2 edits.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 16:48, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
At the risk of sounding like a jerk, almost no one cares about your Wikipedia online status, or how pretty or automated your userspace is. Wikipedia is not a social network - improve some articles, see Category:Articles needing cleanup. I don't have time to work through the parserFunction with you. I think that the parserFunction will not function properly with too many complicated templates in the #expr statement. –xenotalk 18:35, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry. Knowing you, I know how you are trying to convey yourself. I am well aware that this isn't a social networking site. I use this so editors may know if I will respond or not. It also lets them know that if they need help with a certain task or an operation needs to be carried out, that they know if I will be able to help immediately or not. For the fear that I may be annoying you, I will no longer pester you about this and I thank you for your help.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 19:23, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I used to use an online status indicator too, and then I realized that any editor who wants to know if I'm around can just check my contributions =) –xenotalk 19:30, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
That's an idea however, I like my unique way better for when I ever abandon Wikipedia, my grey signature will show and the syntax automatically places a retired banner on the top of my page and editnotice. :)—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 00:21, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Checkuser question

Hi, Xeno! I have a quick question if you don't mind.

I'm currently active in the account creations process (my profile on the tool). Often times in the process, requests are referred to the Checkusers, per our normal procedure. Now, we don't have many Checkusers active in the process, and I'm interested in helping out with these Checkuser requests.

Could you please tell me the process for requesting this right? I am of the age of majority in the United States (I can send my age upon request) and I'm willing to identify to the foundation per the access to nonpublic data policy.

I was directed here from IRC. If there's a better venue for this request, feel free to direct me there.

Thank you, ~ Matthewrbowker Talk to me 06:09, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Being an admin is a de facto requirement, so first you'll go to RfA, then after 6 months or a year list yourself in the next arbcom sponsored election. Or run for arbcom, which may be the easier way. Prodego talk 06:14, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Indeed only once thus far was the checkuser permission granted to a non-admin, and this was in the context of an Audit Subcommittee appointment - I would not want you to complete an application with unrealistic expectations. It would probably be easier to attract more current CheckUsers to participate in the account creation process; you could post to WT:CheckUser and email functionaries-en lists.wikimedia.org with an invitation, including an overview of the requirements of the task.
While typically new CheckUsers are appointed after a call for applications, users are welcome to contact the Arbitration Committee between appointment rounds to see if there is a need for additional personnel (Wikipedia:CUOS#Appointments), though typically only exceptional candidates with a demonstrable need for the tools will be considered for appointment between rounds. –xenotalk 13:37, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots

Greetings Xeno-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and an active member of the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

Randall Livingstone, School of Journalism & Communication, University of Oregon

Hmm... Sure - email is probably best; you can email me by clicking Special:Emailuser/Xeno or emailing xenowiki at gmail dot com. –xenotalk 19:26, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok, great! Thank you for your response and willingness to be interviewed. I will email you my set of questions sometime over the next week. In the meantime, please take a look at the informed consent statement on my user page and let me know if you have any questions. Specifically, let me know if it's ok for me to use your Wikipedia username in my dissertation.
Thank you again, and keep your eye out for an email from me in the next week.

Lectonar is not responding

We are new with wikipedia and Lectonar deleted our article Health Asset Management Inc. We are trying to make the article conform with the wikipedia policies and have asked Lectonar to visit our sandbox: Khoot/sandbox. But it's been a month since a message was placed in his talk page [2] asking for his help and he had not made any reply.

Can you please kindly refer us to another administrator who can check our article? or advise us how to resolve this issue.

Khoot (talk) 16:07, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)You happen to be talking to a user who is one of the highest ranking editors on Wikipedia for he is an administrator, bureaucrat, checkuser, oversighter, and an ArbCom member. All that's missing is the Steward or Founder ranks.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 02:28, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
There are no editor ranks. And I'm not sure why this is relevant to the question? Amalthea 10:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
At was at a loss for words. Perhaps I should've said "one of the most privileged users." Nonetheless, the user was asking to be referred to another admin, and I was pointing out that he was talking to one of the highest privileged editors here on Wikipedia.—cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 23:56, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Hi Khoot, thanks for making an effort to bring your article in line with Wikipedia's policies. I only took a brief look at your sandbox, but I see two immediate problems:
  • Verifiability: "All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation."
Currently none of the material in your article is backed by a reliable source. I checked Google News to see if there is coverage in newspapers, but they don't seem to list any articles about the company at all.
  • Notability: "Wikipedia articles cover notable topics—those that have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time, and are not excluded for other reasons. We consider evidence from reliable independent sources such as published journals, books, and newspapers to gauge this attention. Notability does not directly affect the content of articles, but only whether the topic should have its own article."
Your article does not say why this (your?) company is notable/relevant/important enough to be included in an encyclopedia. This also ties in with verifiability from above: If a company does not have multiple independent reliable sources covering it in-depth then it should not have a standalone article.
To be honest, I'm not sure if you can resolve this for this company at the moment. Most companies do not rise to the required notability level to be included in this encyclopedia. Mine doesn't either, FWIW.
Amalthea 10:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I concur, especially regarding notability ... there's nothing notable about cloud computing, or the use of SaaS in the health field. The draft reads as a company profile, which is what Wikipedia is not about (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 11:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Remove my reviewer and patrol

Can you please remove reviewer and patrol statuses since I'm not interested to review and patrol pages? BlueEarth (talk | contribs) 22:36, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi BlueEarth,
I have removed the 'reviewer' flag from your account. The 'autopatrolled' flag actually means that all new pages you create yourself are automatically set as 'patrolled' and do not need to be double-checked by others as part of new-page patrol (see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled); it thus reduces the workload there. If you still rather have it removed, just say the word of course.
Cheers, Amalthea 22:45, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you so much for removing reviewer flag because I don't review new articles made around Wikipedia except for the new articles about the newly discovered planets, since I'm interested about planets. Autopatrolled has an advantage because it reduces workload if I make new articles, especially long articles so it would not have as many user and as many edits made to those new articles. Status

Sir how can I make the Status template functional? I added the script here: User:Renzoy16/Status but in the user page is says Unknown. I need your help sir, please?--Renzoy16 | Contact Me 23:30, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)First off, the {{Statustop}} template isn't receiving any status input. You have to follow using a pipe and then your status. It should be something like {{Statustop|User:Renzoy16/Status}}.

Secondly, using script won't work because it renders as text when transcluded even if you use a .js subpage. I tried something similar and it's not working. I have gone ahead to try it out for you but I doubt it will work.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 512,067,052) 08:49, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Oversighting requests

Hello Xeno. I just write you because I know you're an active oversighter. I wrote a mail to OTRS enwiki oversight address for a lot of things that should be oversighted something like two weeks ago and did not get any answer. I just wanted to know if everything is okay and if you received my mail properly. Thank you. -- Quentinv57 (talk) 09:34, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Quentin, thanks for the note. I will have one of my more active colleagues look into this. –xenotalk 12:54, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Status Updater

Hi Xeno, I just wanted to know if there was any way of changing you StatusChanger2 js script so that it worked in Vector? Works well in modern, but I have a slight preference for Vector. Thanks--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:35, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Is it also possible to put them in a drop down list. I use vector and it looks a little silly in its current state.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 513,199,893) 22:31, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
  • Sorry but I didn't write the script; I just modified it ever-so-slightly. You could try asking at WP:VPT for someone to make a new version that works well in vector. –xenotalk 02:00, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. By the way, Cyberpower, I have tried using it in Vector and it doesn't seem to do anything at all. How does it affect the menus at the top?--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 15:37, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
P.S. Would it be possible, as an aside, to have a bot that automatically updated your status based upon how many edits you had made in the last hour, or the time since your last edit?--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 16:09, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Just like in modern, the links appear right next to the standard links. Make sure you have vector.js and not Vector.js. You would have to make the bot and have it approved but that's already an idea that I having for I am planning on make a bot for convenience purposes so you can't take it. :P—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 513,354,817) 18:11, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Well if you do I would be delighted if you could add my Username to it's task list :-) On the topic of the skin, my page is at User:Gilderien/vector.js, but it is not displaying the same links as in modern :/. --Gilderien Talk|Contribs 18:51, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Try this.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 513,366,216) 19:14, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Nope, sorry, still not working.:/--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 19:55, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Stupid question: Are you sure you are using vector. Check your preferences. If you are I would suggest replacing that code with the status changer to importScript('User:Xenocidic/statusChanger2.js');.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 513,377,286) 20:14, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
I probably shouldn't be asking for this but if you gave me your username and password, I could try and fix this for because your .js pages are all locked and only users can edit their own javascript. You would have my complete assurance that I would only use your account for the purpose of getting the script for vector to work. This is completely optional and you do not have to give it to me if you feel it breaches your privacy. If you do give it to me, please send it as an e-Mail so it can't be seen by the public.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 513,384,580) 20:56, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmm.. still isn't working. Never mind, I'll fiddle around with the code a bit more, see if I can get it to work. If not, I guess I can just switch skins every time.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:23, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Mobile account

Ive created User:Edinburgh Wanderer Mobile as an alternative account to my main one User:Edinburgh Wanderer. Purely because problems i was having problems with accidentally using rollback on mobile devices and i was advised this was a good idea. Ive got two questions though one have i done everything ok to declare this as an alternative and two i would like to get the autopatrolled user right added to this account is this something that can be done non controversially as its on the main or would i have to apply to get it added. Edinburgh Wanderer 23:47, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Probably, just to be safe, you should make an edit to the userpage of the mobile account from your main account to 'verify' the link. As regards autopatrolled: it is only necessarily for accounts that create new articles. Are you planning to create new articles from mobile devices? If not, you do not need the autopatrolled right added. –xenotalk 17:58, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Xeno,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC) Young June Sah --Yjune.sah (talk) 22:32, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

CheckUser

Would it be possible to perform a CheckUser regarding Willsnoogbaroots and the IP address 77.97.87.115? Unconstructive modifications, mainly undoing other users' constructive and accurate edits, were made on an article several times. The intervals of time between each of the disruptive edits performed by the accounts suggests that the editors are in fact the same person, which edits unconstructively "under IP." (The damaged article was protected and repaired.) Thank you. --MaxDawsonC (talk) 00:58, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Not really. With simple vandalism like this, WP:RBI works best: Undo the vandalism, warn them, and report them at WP:AIV if they don't stop.
If you think other accounts are involved as well and it's getting out of hand, stronger measures might need to be considered of course. The Dr. Mario article has been protected now, for example.
Amalthea 08:52, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I requested semi-protection when I saw the damage done to the article. --MaxDawsonC (talk) 14:37, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind response.

Unfortunately it's been long enough that I'm not sure if I even remember what I was going to ask about. (I have a vague recollection that it was about whether something talked about in a discussion was implemented. And if so, in what way.)

If it comes up again, I'll drop you a note : )

ARBCOM endorsed removal?

Is this an Arbcom endorsed removal of images from my talk page? It's unusual that two sitting arbs are trying to remove this image from my talk page. This has now been added to with another comic as well. Can u confirm if arbcom has received emails and has discussed this, leading to ur interjections on my user and talk page. Try discussing with me and others before bombastically forcing your...umm...opinions down my throat. Thanks Russavia ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) 03:37, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Harassment of editors and Arbcom transparency

On my talk page at User_talk:Russavia#Comment_from_AGK, there is a discussion between myself and your fellow Arb User:AGK, concerning an issue which came to the attention of Arbcom. As the various links and diffs show, many editors saw the recent RFC/U against User:Fae as harassment, at best, and as homophobic harassment, at worst.

AGK firstly stated that he "voted" to ban Delicious Carbuncle, then has "corrected" himself to state that he merely was in favour of the Committee reviewing the case; either way there was opposition on the Committee to either banning Delicious Carbuncle or even reviewing the harassment that Fae was being subjected to.

As an Arb, the community elected you to represent the community for the community. The Committee time and time again pushes on editors who come before it that transparency is essential in our editing; in fact, transparency is one of the key tenets of this project, however the Arbcom often does not act in the same transparent way that it (and the community) expects of the community itself.

AGK states on my talk page that one can only expect a transparent hearing if a request for arbitration is filed, and states that most Arbcom business is conducted this way. This notion is somewhat correct, but it is also very wrong. As the committee time and time makes a point of stating that community transparency is essential, the community also expects the same of the Committee -- at all times. The Committee also makes many decisions "behind closed doors", and when pushed to explain decisions cites various "get out of jail free cards" to avoid being transparent to the community-at-large. This includes decisions such as banning editors for things done offwiki which can't clearly be attributed to that editor, or unbanning editors with a history of socking, etc, etc.

In aid of this, and in the interests of transparency to the Community at large, I am asking that you answer the following questions:

  1. Did you discuss the harassment of Fae on the Arbcom-l mailing list?
  2. If you did discuss this on the mailing list, were you in favour or against the Committee reviewing the information?
  3. If the discussion got to anything resembling a vote, did you vote in favour or against banning Delicious Carbuncle?

These are very simple questions which one is able to answer if they are truly for transparency both on the Committee and in the community in general, and I would expect that many in the community would be wanting transparent answers to these questions.

The last thing, it is of course Fae's choice if he wishes to request a case for Arbitration, but these questions are not being asked to have an end-run around the Arbitration process, but are being asked in the interests of transparency on a specific example that the Committee was aware of and refused to act upon. I would expect Fae and other editors (especially LGBT editors) would be wanting transparent answers here now, before deciding if they wish to act. Russavia ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) 07:54, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 00:33, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

  None
Hello.

My knowledge on the field of electronic engineering is extremely restricted, or maybe i should better say absolutely none.

I have contacted you again in the past for the same reason and i would like to thank you for your help.

This time, i will kindly ask you once again to delete all the articles on wikipedia, or any other organization of wikimedia that contain the User : Panagiotis Xenos-Kokoletsis, as well as the User : Former user 9172 .

The reason is quite serious, so i would really appreciate it if you could help.

With my kindest regards

User name policy / block-on-sight vs. gently-persuade

Hi Xeno, this is a follow-up to a discussion about a year ago in which you were involved, and which led to user name policy stating that people who had registered an organisational user name should not be blocked on sight if they had not made problematic edits, but should instead be gently persuaded to change user name. The question has just come up again at WP:AN; see Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Orange_Mike and following sections. Cheers, --JN466 07:49, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Geographic spread

I believe you have a toolserver account, but at least you are well versed in bots. I would be interrested in finding a graphic representation of the geographic location of the articles within a WikiProject ie using location data in the artcles. For example WP:Germany has some articles tagged in Nanibia due to colonial issues. Within the core area of the project such a report would identify areas that need attention. Has something like that already been done or would it be very difficult from a toolserver perspective? Agathoclea (talk) 22:04, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Objectivity

Xeno, please see this post of mine at the bottom, here on Admin:Bwilkins talk page, “Is this in jest or a joke?” (perma‑link)

What I am referring to there is, in part, is when I rewrote Fuzzball (string theory). I had, on my own time (obviously) in real life (obviously) emailed and spoken with Dr. SD Mathur after he and Oleg Lunin wrote a landmark paper on string theory in Physical Review Letters. He responded to my emailed inquiry and we later spoke several times over the phone and exchanged more emails. Dr. Mathur reviewed my proposed verbiage for the “Fuzzball” article to ensure it was factually correct. To that, Bwilkins wrote “Turns out you're more dangerous than I realized.” This seems a breathtaking personal attack and I am gobsmacked that an admin would just waltz over to my talk page and leave something like that. Greg L (talk) 20:49, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Help please

Xeno. Please see my talk page and try to reign in Bwilkins. Rather than merely write “Oops, sorry. I didn’t mean it that way,” he wrote of what “rational” and “irrational” people would think in the face of what he bald-face wrote. Then, in response to an opinion piece where I advocate change in Wikipedia policy, he gives it a backhanding by coming to my talk page and referring to it as a “diatribe.” This is all just petty baiting and no editor should have to be subjected to it from an admin. Greg L (talk) 00:30, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Merge Accounts (en/de)

Hello Xeno. I found your page via the Command, that i should first ask a local bureaucrat, before triing other ways. My Problem: I have my main wikipedia-account in the german wiki, but wanted to write an article in the english wiki too. The unified login did not function. My Username in the german wiki is "Kommerz". There is a user named "Kommerz" in the english wiki, but it is not me. So i registered a new user in the en-wiki for me: "KommerzAndi". How can i merge the two accounts? Or if this is not possible: how do i make an account in the en-wiki, which is mergeable with my german-wiki-account? Ih hope you can help me, sorry fot bothering you. --131.130.244.36 (talk) 10:49, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

It is currently not possible to merge different usernames, see meta:Help:Unified login#Can I merge different usernames?. Since you "own" the SUL account for Kommerz and the local User:Kommerz does not seem to have made any edits, you should be able to usurp the name here. Follow the instructions at WP:USURP to do so. Confusing edits by Hopiakuta

After reading this opinion in an AfD I closed, I examined Hopakiuta's most recent edits more closely, and found that almost all of them appear to be nonsensical. Examples include [3] and [4], or their moving their user talk page to "User talk:hopiakuta/ index Samantha Geimer Lot Elizabeth Ann Smart Gilmour Deon Baptiste Ian Baptiste Emmett Louis Till Stanley Ann Dunham Anneke Frank Annele Frank Charles Augustus Lindbergh". However, there are no clearly detrimental mainspace edits; instead there are some small productive edits like typo corrections and redirects. Because you are referenced in [5], can you provide any advice about whether this situation needs administrative or other intervention?  Sandstein  08:55, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Skivington

Hello Xeno,

A page that I created several years ago was deleted for "Clear Copyright Violations" but, if I remember correctly, I had merely sourced a wide variety of information to do with the origins of the Surname and a few famous people who had it.

I understand that this may not be the case (as my memory is a little foggy) so I was wondering if it would be possible to please userfy the page? This will allow me to get the data that I put in back and remove anything that I shouldn't have put in.

Thanks, -Jim Jskivington (talk) 10:53, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Personal attacks by User:Ian.thomson

I would have left a report at WP:ANI, but unfortunately it has recently been semiprotected - I am sorry to bother you, and please feel free to pass this onto any of your colleagues there. I am a long-term reader of Wikipedia, being particularly interested in military history, and I recently tried to show my gratitude to User:HJ Mitchell, whose work I greatly admire. I was under the impression that the more "barnstars" added the better, and thus I gave him a long list of them. My edit was reverted, and since I couldn't see anything wrong with just showing my appreciation, I reverted the revert, quite surprised. A perfectly civil message almost instantly followed, explaining the undesirable technical consequences of such an action, and that it was not the custom. However, it was coupled soon afterwards by what, as outlined at my talk page, I believed was assuming bad faith. I demanded that the user take back what he or she had said, requesting an apology. Instead of any apology, yet further bad faith ensued, and I, being quite hurt by this, wrote back yet another message. No response or any attempt at justification (of which I think there is none) were given, but instead, the talkback message on his user page, which I had given to him as a courtesy, was quite ruthlessly removed, the justification given – WP:DFTT. I find it highly offensive that a user should assume such bad faith that he effectively repeatedly accuses me of being a deliberately unconstructive "troll", or, more simply, a "vandal". For years I have been a staunch advocate of Wikipedia, even donating money to the Foundation, and to be treated with such personal attacks is profoundly insulting. I would request either your, or some other authority's intervention in this deeply upsetting matter.

Yours sincerely, --81.105.181.20 (talk) 18:25, 13 September 2012 (UTC).

I wanted to ask you if it is possible to rename User:Anguish (which is "a sockpuppet of user:Angus [...]" with only one edit) to something else, so that I can use unified login for the english Wikipedia too.

Dispute Resolution – Volunteer Survey Invite

Hello Xeno. To follow up on the first survey in April, I am conducting a second survey to learn more about dispute resolution volunteers - their motivations for resolving disputes, the experiences they've had, and their ideas for the future. I would appreciate your thoughts. I hope that with the results of this survey, we will learn how to increase the amount of active, engaged volunteers, and further improve dispute resolution processes. The survey takes around five to ten minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Text copy request

Hello Xeno,

Yes, you guessed it, I've had a page deleted (my first effort) and I'd really like to try again. I originally wanted to create a new page called Hong kong junks but the deletion admin told me that there was already a similar page Junk (ship) that covered the topic.

I would like to try once more and justify the reasons that it should be separated. One of the most popular weekend pastimes in Hong Kong is to charter a boat (usually just referred to as a junk) and go out to find a beach or a remote island. This topic is quite different to the content described in the existing page - mainly historical and nautical information.

If you can allow me to try again, I will attempt to be more careful in citing the right sources and go into more detail - maybe even change the page name.

Anyway, I'd love it if you could you send me a copy of the text...many thanks in advance!

Crat statement draft

Hi Following the drama at BN, I'm trying to come up with a statement all Crats could agree to. Please take a look, below. I am quite content to do this onwiki -we have always worked transparently, except where secrecy is essential (ie RTV). I think we should be able to wordsmith a statement acceptable to all, and I think it's an important thing to do.

  1. In my opinion, this issue has come about through an unfortunate proliferation of documentation: policy, guideline, how-to etc
  2. I am not convinced that there is community consensus on all of the points encapsulated in those various pages
  3. I am unhappy at what may be described as some or all of: inconsistencies, inaccuracies or lack of clarity in that documentation
  4. I do not believe that any of the issues we have faced have been caused by Crats trying to widen their powers
  5. I would like to see the issues clarified, based on consensus, and for the documentation to be updated accordingly
  6. I'd like to thank Griot-de for generously withdrawing the rename request

Proposed deletion of Basement Pool

The article Basement Pool has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable video game

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi Xeno, I noticed that in 2010 you protected the Wiki Project Visual Arts template. I was wondering if it'd be okay to unprotect it so I could add the importance assessment to the template. I've been setting up the project to include articles listed by importance and need the template to be changed to help with classifying the articles. I did this with another project and would like to help this group with including important articles. Is there any way you or someone else could change the template if it is protected? Or allow permissions? thanks! --Turn685 (talk) 21:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

To Ms. Xeno

Dear Ms. Xeno,

I am writing to you this letter, as there is a major problem and I believe that you are the best person to talk to about it.

The reason that I am communicating you, is because someone that was using the name : "Panagiotis Xenos-Kokoletsis" appears in a number of pages in wikipedia and this is a major problem for me, as it is creating a confusion that turned out whenever I have applied for a job, because all of the employers are asking me whether this person is me.

I would like to make a parenthesis telling you, that this name is extremely rare, as we are only four people in the whole planet with this name (me and three cousins of mine) and after a communication that I had with all three of them, it turned out that none of them had, or have an account in wikipedia either.

There was a similar issue with a person using the name : "Panagiotis Xenos-Kokoletsis" on a Website called : "Yatedo" that was solved just 12 hours after contacting the administrator of the website.

The problem with this account in wikipedia though, is a lot more serious, as it is not that it is creating a confusion on whether I was working for the greek government or not(as the Yatedo-profile did), but that there are certain complaints in wikipedia about this user(Panagiotis Xenos-Kokoletsis) which ends up receiving negative answers from the employers, as they can not know whether this person is me or not and I can do nothing to prove that this user is not me.

The consequence of this though, is that without a job, I can not cope with the financial obligations that I have towards my family.

Ms. Xeno, i will kindly ask you to delete the name :"Panagiotis Xenos-Kokoletsis" from these pages in wikipedia, as can not do it myself.

The links for two of them, that I found just now are the following : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AlexNewArtBot/GreeceSearchResult/archive15 http://wpedia.goo.ne.jp/enwiki/User_talk:Panagiotis_Xenos-Kokoletsis

I am looking forward for your reply — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.117.76.138 (talk) 07:56, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Ms. Xeno is unavailable at the moment.

Renaming information request

You have been identified as someone who does a large number of renames. If you could visit meta:Rename practices and explain your renaming practices and policy, we would appreciate the effort. We are making this request to help us better understand local renaming practices as we work towards SUL finalization. Thank you for your time and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Forced user renames coming soon for SUL

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 13:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Your help requested at WP:Split

Greetings.

I'm a newbie, and I'm wise enough to say so, so pardon me if I'm doing things the "wrong" way or seem to be out of place. I'm trying to learn all I can and practice techniques in my own userspace before attempting to do things in the "real world" and inadvertently causing a big stir, as newbies are wont to do.  :-)

It seems like you were a contributor to Template:Split from a few years ago. So it seems to me like you may be an excellent person to have in the discussion we're having on how to properly split an article, and then properly updating WP:SPLIT to reflect what we've learned. I think I'm not the only one who's a bit confused about how this template is to be used and what the final result should look like.

I'm actually an old computer geek, myself, and pretty good at writing documentation, so I can certainly help there ... but where we're weak is understanding specifically what the template is calling for.

I'll also be inviting contributors of Template:Split to to our discussion, so we can have a full understanding and agreement on this.

Thanks in advance for your help and comments!

Old userpage deletion request

Hi there, I just was reading WP:RTV and understand I can request that my old userpage be deleted, rather than redirect to my current one. Is this possible? aqwfyj Talk/Contribs 14:43, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

RTV is for only if you never, ever come back to Wikipedia. If you WP:CLEANSTART, then no - the pages must be linked (✉→BWilkins←✎) 14:52, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
I suppose your old user page could be deleted given that anyone can request their user page deleted per U1 (unless things have changed), but there will still be a pointer in the log and the talk page redirect should remain given the incoming links. –xenotalk 21:36, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

USURP / SUL finalisation

I've responded @ "None (SUL request) → Elysion". I was conscious in explaining my thinking that I've rather gone ahead and created my own rules for how finalisation affects SUL rename requests without consultation. On reflection, I shouldn't have. The approach I have been taking is to perform all requests that SUL finalisation renders inevitable anyway, especially where this makes life for everyone post-finalisation simpler. When I have a moment, I will start a discussion on the subject and check that there is a general consensus for local renames to be performed on that basis. WJBscribe (talk) 11:22, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

My thoughts both on the instant case and in general are largely similar to your own. Thanks for providing input. –xenotalk 14:17, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

Request to take part in a survey

Hi there. I would very much appreciate it if you could spend ~2 minutes and take a short survey - a project trying to understand why the most active Wikipedia contributors (such as yourself) may reduce their activity, or retire. I sent you an email with details, if you did not get it please send me a wikiemail, so that I can send you an email with the survey questions. I would very much appreciate your cooperation, as you are among the most active Wikipedia editors who show a pattern of reduced activity, and thus your response would be extremely valuable. Thanks! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:28, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Xeno. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

Question

Hi, I see you're a bureaucrat involved in CHU, so I thought you might know the answer to this: how long is it that I can still change usernames here, and not have to request them on meta after the switch? I want to change my name, but would prefer to wait until a few things that I'm involved in are over, such as my current FAC. Thanks, StringTheory11 (t • c) 03:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm just curious why your archives apparently stop in 2012. I was looking for a recent conversation (Summer 2013) but it doesn't appear in the little graphic depicting your TP archives. By the way, I'm a TP visitor, not a stalker. ;-) NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 12:39, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

The hyphen next to 2012 is meant to indicate it's 2012 and onward. Due to a period of reduced activity, my current archive spans a much longer period. =) –xenotalk 13:33, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Wow!

I am absolutely shocked that my username usurpation request went through! That is awesome. Thank you so much! For the last time, NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk —Preceding undated comment added 16:26, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Why wouldn't it? :) No one else seemed to be using it globally. Be sure to use special:MergeAccount. Cheers, –xenotalk 16:28, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Well, I'm just surprised that since it is a common first name, that no one was using it. I signed up with Twitter in 2007 (it launched in July 2006) and not only was my first name taken but my entire name had been claimed (also by a person who didn't use it but Twitter wouldn't release it).
I don't know about special:MergeAccount but I'll click on it and hopefully figure it out. Thanks again, xeno! Liz Let's Talk 17:36, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
I clicked on it and got a message that "The accounts named "Newjerseyliz" on each of the following sites have been automatically attached to the unified account" so I guess I'm linked via my old username. I remember that "Liz" had been registered on other Wikis so it's unlikely I can get a unified account with that name. Liz Let's Talk 17:41, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
It appears you've inadvertently logged back into NewjerseyLiz, make sure you are logged into "Liz" and try again. –xenotalk 19:05, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Just seeing your message. Logging out and back in. Maybe this is why SineBot keeps leaving my signature even though I leave one as well. NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 22:43, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Well, that's weird. When I was logged in as "Newjerseyliz", my signature said "Liz". But now that I'm logged in as "Liz", it says "Newjerseyliz". I guess I'll have to double-check the Preferences. NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 22:45, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks much!

Wikipedia:CHU/S#I Jethrobot → I JethroBT

Hi xeno-- just wanted to ask if you might be able to make this change when you have a moment. I saw you were going through some requests recently. I'm sorry if my request will be somewhat time-consuming or somewhat annoying, as I've already posted a request at WP:BN, but I'd like to have this done so I can continue to provide updates for the WLL event I am coordinating and, well, just so I can edit in general. I get the sense that I should be logged out for this change based on my edit count, but it's been somewhat difficult for me to stay away for very long! I'll stay signed out until I hear from you. Not much. I've been making too many edits and I'm vaguely considering running for adminship again next month. I was quite glad to notice that you're active again. :-) Though once bureaucrats are no longer in charge of user renames, I wonder what will become of you. ;-) --MZMcBride (talk) 18:57, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
One wonders, indeed! There's not much work to go around beyond renames. If you do go for adminship again, hold onto it this time! –xenotalk 19:04, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
"... again [and pass!]" I suppose we'll have to wait and see what happens.
Re: bureaucrats, I suppose there are still bots and admins to flag, though retaining the role does seem rather silly given its very narrow scope of responsibilities. We could easily allow admins to flag bots and have stewards grant adminship (perhaps even based on the say-so of a local bureaucrat), but I believe past proposals to eliminate the position have gone nowhere. As you know, inertia is quite cruel around here. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:14, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Duckduckgo/Duckduckstop

Thanks for the rename. I think the block might need to remain on Duckduckgo (or something to that effetx) because the user is continuing to edit under that old name, rather than Duckduckstop. I wasn't sure what you meant by "horrible block" - it was unfortunate, because two editors, and myself, missed Duckduckgo's post at WP:CHU, as I detailed here before Duckduckgo (!) deleted it. --Lexein (talk) 19:39, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome. The user is not intentionally using 'Duckduckgo', the global SUL usually does this on accident. My thoughts on the rest is here. –xenotalk 19:43, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Ive had several user renames. Yes it recreates it on occasion but its you're choice to use it. I can login and edit if i wanted to on my old accounts i don't however.Blethering Scot 20:01, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Also on rename it doesn't force me to use old account, i have to log into it before the global login would then take effect. Yes logging out will rectify it but only if he then doesn't log back into that old account. Given the nasty comments he's made i seriously have my doubts.Blethering Scot 20:05, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
User may have been logged in globally and came in through a different project. There are many reasons the session may persist. I don't think the user intentionally is using their old username because they voluntarily changed it. Given the grief they're getting over a completely innocuous username, I'm not surprised that they've made some frustrated remarks. –xenotalk 20:49, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Remarks were made before all that and continued after. Its also not innocuous at all its pretty blatant, whether a rhyme or not its the name of a established company.Blethering Scot 21:00, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
So is Xeno. The username 'Duckduckgo' is innocuous because it harms exactly no one. There is no promotional value to it. –xenotalk 21:14, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't read the policy that way and obviously others didn't too. However we will agree to disagree, no harm done, rename sorted, everyones still editing.Blethering Scot 23:17, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Xeno, I see you're around. I sent you an email a week or two ago. Did you ever get it? Not really critical, but I never know whether to ignore these things, assuming you've got no comment, or risk pestering you. So I chose the latter. --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:03, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Username change

Hi Xeno!

You were the one who authorized my username change from Natxohm to the one I am using now. Thanks for that. I have a question though. My old username is still active. I mean, I can still log in with it. There are no contributions associated to it, but I can still log in. Do I have to delete it somehow or does it disappear automatically? And another thing. Is there a way to change all usernames from all the other projects from one place? Thanks Xeno. Ijhm86 (talk) 11:30, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

You can just safely ignore the recreated old username. To get your usernames on other projects changed, you need to go to the individual projects, or where they don't have bureaucrats, request at meta. See m:RENAMELINKS. –xenotalk 15:00, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! I guess I will have to go through all that process. I am enrolled in about 30 projects, although I have not made any contributions in 28 of them. Ijhm86 (talk) 08:29, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
For those you have not yet contributed, if you don't care about your register date, you can just let the SUL make new accounts for you. For those with contributions you will probably want renamed. –xenotalk 14:16, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I left a usurpation request on WP:CHUU and it was done by you. However when I make a change it still shows up as my old username in the log. As far as I know this is not what should happen, is that right? My login name is still the same and the name that shows up on the right top corner is still the same. Could you please look into this? (Maybe because the old name user:Identitycrisis still remains?)

Hey, just dropping by to let you know that User:VeteransPlus, whose CHUS request you approved, is an inappropriate username, given the recently G13'd AfC submission that the user created. I'm not asking you to reverse the username change, just wondering if a block would be justifiable in this case. hmssolent\You rang? ship's log 02:45, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

I think it would be better to encourage them to change their username before blocking. (If they even continue editing). –xenotalk 14:58, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
Well, if they filed in a CHUS request, it is likely that they might resume editing in the near future, so I've left them the standard COI-username template. I'll let you know if they have resumed editing. hmssolent\You rang? ship's log 09:39, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
