WP 1.0 bot

I think that having more maintainers is good. If you let me know your toolserver user name, I will request access for you to the enwp10 project where the bot code it, and you and Theopolisme can discuss things. Can you email that to me?

The current code is pretty stable, with no urgent bugs, but there are always special requests on the WP 1.0 page that need to be handled, so having more than one person with access can be helpful. — Carl (CBM · talk) 14:57, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot followup

I have left an official announcement at Wikipedia_talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index turning over the WP 1.0 bot to you and Theopolisme. I am always available to answer questions, explain why things were done in some way, or otherwise help, but the bot is yours now. Treat it well, — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:45, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

You asked me to remind you...

...to come up with some sort of script or bot or whatever that will create a feed of recent changes to all pages that are vulnerable on a time-sensitive basis - namely the current date (probably the date in UTC with a 36-hour buffer on either side) and every single article linked to from the main page. And anything else anyone can think of. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 04:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

I've created a preliminary script here. It doesn't look very nice, but it does what it's supposed to. It shows the last five revisions of every page linked to on the Main Page. — Wolfgang42 (talk) 05:31, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Very cool! Would there be any way to do it on a timeframe basis, though, as opposed to a "last x changes" one? Like, so it would look more like a watchlist or the Recent Changes feed - perhaps both a "last 20/50/100/250/500 changes" option and a "last .5/1/2/6/12/24 hours" one? Something like Sandy Hook sometimes gets dozens of edits an hour, sometimes even coming fast enough that vandalism doesn't get noticed right away. Oh, also, is there some way to get it to ignore redirects? For instance, the last 5 revisions for Juggler, a redirect to Juggling, go back to 2002. Anyways, thanks for actually doing this. It looks awesome! . — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 10:49, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I just discovered Special:RecentChangesLinked/Main Page, is that what you're looking for? — Wolfgang42 (talk) 19:38, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh. Perfect. Well, so much for that idea.  ... Would you, perchance, know anything about bot programming? — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 01:08, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I run WolfBot and I'm working on a Python bot to clean up articles about meteorites. Is there something in particular you have in mind? — Wolfgang42 (talk) 01:16, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes there is - a bot that would resolve certain feedback submissions (see User:Francophonie&Androphilie/Auto-resolve) and hide all blank ones (per WP:FRG#H6). I think I know enough Python and Regex that I'd be able to follow most of the code, and perhaps even run the day-to-day maintenance once the bot was functional, but I'm at something of a loss as to how to actually configure the whole thing. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 01:25, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Legoktm suggests using the edit filter, something like Special:AbuseFilter/458. — Wolfgang42 (talk) 01:52, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I believe that the problem with that filter is that it keeps on hitting the >10% limit. And I'm almost positive that an auto-resolve filter would as well. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 02:12, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I asked about this during IRC office hours, and apparently they're working on some sort of a machine learning algorithm to do this. — Wolfgang42 (talk) 00:29, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Version 0.9 offline release

Hi, I'm involved in putting together the offline releases for WP:1.0. First of all - thanks for helping out with our bot, which serves an important purpose for the community. I don't know my Perl from my Python, so I personally appreciate your contribution!

Secondly, we're starting to put together our next offline release, which will be called Version 0.9. One of the lesser known purposes of the bot - its original raison d'etre, is to help is to select articles like this, then use it to create a collection similar to Wikipedia:Version 0.8. I'd like to ask for help from you and User:Theopolisme in putting the collection together, with guidance (if necessary) from User:CBM and User:Kelson who both helped with the last 2-3 releases. Can you help? I'd like us to have an open IRC meeting to plan things - if you can help, is there a good time (UTC) for you to meet? Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 23:36, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Wolfgang42,

Regarding the unused image: It is a newspaper scan for which I obtained permission to use from the newspaper editor. The reason for uploading it and including it (or trying to include it) was its value as a reference for the article about John S. Crout. When I uploaded it, I explained everything about it -- why I'd uploaded it, that I had obtained permission. Some Wikipedian author blew it away under the pretense that I didn't have permission. They were simply wrong and the action taken was just plain rude -- because I couldn't figure out WP instructions that let me do anything more with it. This actually leads me to the next paragraph.

I don't have any idea how to use the Open-double-curly-brace Talkback pipe Kernel.package

Close-double-curly-brace but I'd certainly like to know. Same goes for most WP instructions. Most instructions seem to rely on what WP seems to think is "self-evident". No disrespect intended; explanations are welcome. I don't do as much as I used to do because I don't understand the direction/instructions.

Assuming I can figure out the instructions given on my Talk Page, I'll address the image there. I'm leaving it here too. Again, no disrespect; just lack of confidence that I'll understand how I'm to respond on my talk page. Kernel.package (talk) 02:36, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

WolfBot Obama approval graph

I love it. After having spent hours making those graphs myself, someone finally automated the process. It's great. Thanks so much!

Frenzy

Hello Wolfgang, while your efforts at AfC are appreciated, this very promotional article was in no way ready for the big time. It is currently under discussion at WP:COIN. Problems are the promotional tone, excessive detail based on unreliable sources, and a likely conflict of interest. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:03, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Notification of automated file description generation

Your upload of File:Barack Obama's Presidential Job Approval Ratings, 2009-2012 (Gallup Poll).svg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! The Saskatchewan Communities & Neighbourhoods-related importance and quality categories have been deleted, why does WP 1.0 bot keep insisting there are 1,584 pages in them? 117Avenue (talk) 05:26, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Obama approval ratings graph

Hello, the file you uploaded of Barack Obama's approval ratings does not include data after March 29, 2013. It seems that the bot programmed to update the graph for some reason was not successful in doing so for most of 2013, and has not been working at all this year. I'd appreciate it if you could manually update the graph (or fix the bot), as more than a year of missing data is quite a chunk to not have. Thanks. --Philpill691 (talk) 03:58, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

  • Since you haven’t responded, I’ve made a request for the image to be updated here. Just letting you know. --Philpill691 (talk) 05:14, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot

Hi, the GA log has not been updated recently. Is there a reason for this? Thanks, Matty.007 08:20, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

I'll second this as well. There is talk it may be a general server issue, but I'd like to hear from the maintainers if that is indeed the issue. I'm involved in a GLAM project out of Chicago, and we've been using the statistics box that the above bot produces to help focus our content efforts and assess our progress. (Pinging TeriEmbrey).
