Hello, Yes, I am new here, this was my first attempt to create an article. I am honestly confused as to the issue. I see comments stating that "You have been indefinitely blocked from editing because your account is being used only for spam or advertising". I am confused by this, as I fail to see what is being advertised or promoted. I used the page of another Musician/Performer as an example; that person's page included bio and discography information, just as I entered on this page. I have followed links given relating to this deletion. One I notice states "Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia." I made focused, and intentional effort to make sure that information entered was of this nature. Mr. Nickerson is not a friend or family member, and it was not my intent to advertise or promote him any more than Jimmy Buffett or Frank Sinatra or any the pages of any other person on Wikipedia does. It is neither my intent, nor desire to "advertise" nor "spam" anyone. Again, this was my first attempt at creating an article. Right now, I am confused as to what is "spam or advertising" in relation to my article, and as the article appears to have been promptly deleted, I've not had opportunity to state my case, nor to correct the issue. I am confused as to how to proceed on this issue. If something that I have included or omitted is in violation of something, disable the page, talk to me, help me to understand the issue, and allow me opportunity to correct it. Help me to learn, and become a contributing part of Wikipedia.

Speedy deletion nomination of Ross Nickerson

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ross Nickerson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Managing a conflict of interest

edit

  Hello, WBMG. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. – Thjarkur (talk) 17:57, 23 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. Help Template

edit

This was my first attempt to do anything other than view Wikipedia. It was never the intent to advertise, spam, or otherwise violate any rule. If content of the article on Mr. Nickerson contains item(s) which are in violation of Wikipedia rules, please help me understand my errors. I will gladly remove any content which is in violation.

As you have been blocked, you will need to follow the instructions in the second paragraph of the above block template. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:07, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Please help me with...

I realize that I may be asking some "dumb questions", please bear with me. Am I understanding the above process to mean that my current username is permanently blocked, and I will have to request a whole new one be created?

WBMG (talk) 15:59, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

WBMG, you as a person are blocked from editing. Your username is a secondary problem here; your promotional edits are the main problem. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 16:14, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
I understand that something in the page that I did is considered to be "promotional"; as I say, it is not my intent to violate rules. I created the page using the page of another musician as a template. As that page remains posted, I can only presume that something I added is what is considered promotional. I will gladly remove the offending information, if someone will help me understand where the offending material is. WBMG (talk) 17:31, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi WBMG, the only way to request an unblock is precisely following the instructions above. This includes the part "you must disclose who is paying you to edit", if applicable.
You will probably not be unblocked to continue editing about Ross Nickerson. If you are interested in editing about topics that are unrelated to your conflict of interest, you will probably have to explicitly say this, and provide examples. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:19, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requested username:

Request reason:

Change from organization name to individual, so as to correct account as business; I desire to make useful contributions to Wikipedia, and do so within established policies. If unblocked, contributions would be of an Encyclopedia/informational nature, not advertising nor promoting anything/anyone, but simply presenting information presumed to be of interest to the public at large. I understand that I was blocked because 1) This account relates to an organization rather than a single individual. 2) Content of the page created was considered to be advertising or of a promotional nature. I apologize for my previous violations, and do not intend to violate established policy going forward.

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. Yamla (talk) 11:10, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi WBMG, please clarify:
  • Will you continue to edit about Ross Nickerson?
  • What is your connection to Ross Nickerson?
Thank you very much in advance.

{{help me}}

Hello ToBeFree. Mr. Nickerson is a friend of a friend. The page was created at the request of my friend, as she knows I am a Web designer. I have never met Mr. Nickerson, nor do I have any sort of business interest in him, personally nor professionally. I do wish to complete the page regarding him, to keep my word to my friend, however I wish to do so completely within the bounds of Wikipedia policy and regulations. As Mr. Nickerson has (based on the information provided to me) performed with a number of well known Bluegrass and Country Music personalities, and is apparently himself known in his area of music, I believe that the notability requirement is met. I reiterate my desire to create content within established Wikipedia Policy. WBMG (talk) 21:06, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
WBMG, thank you very much for the clarification. While this does sound better than I had expected, it raises a new question:
  • What is your connection to Weirs Beach Media Group (WBMG) (Special:PermanentLink/931979773), a company that offers "marketing and promotion" on weirsbeachmedia.com?
I'm sorry for pelting you with questions, but clearing these strange circumstances seems to be the only way to move forward from here. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:53, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

ToBeFree - Not a problem. I seek to be above board here. I am the Principal and Creative Director of Weirs Beach Media Group. As stated, I am a Web designer. However, "Marketing and Promotion" of Mr. Nickerson is not, nor was it ever the intent in the creation of his page. As I stated, Mr. Nickerson's page is my first Wikipedia page, so I (clearly incorrectly) presumed that identifying myself as a non-affiliated agency, as opposed to a "fan" was the appropriate action. My friend and Mr. Nickerson are apparently dating, however I have never met Mr. Nickerson, I was not hired to promote him, nor advertise for him in any manner. My friend asked me to create a page for him, which she wished to give him as a Christmas gift, and I attempted to create an entry no different from any other musician currently listed on Wikipedia. WBMG (talk) 22:36, 26 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, WBMG. I think that this page now contains all information needed for an independent administrator to accept or decline the unblock request. I personally am unsure; I would have been more comfortable with this if the answer to my first question had been a clear "no". Conflict of interest editing is strongly discouraged by the conflict of interest guideline, but Wikipedia does not strictly forbid neutral, verifiable additions about notable people.
In case you are unblocked, I strongly recommend:
  • Concisely, clearly disclosing your connection to Ross Nickerson on your user page (Special:MyPage);
  • Not re-creating the article "Ross Nickerson" directly, but instead creating a draft to be submitted for independent review. To do so easily, you can open the article wizard and click "Next" on the first step, not "sandbox". When asked, click "I'm writing about something close to me". If WP:PAID applies to you, click "I'm paid to edit" instead. Note that WP:PAID is not purely about money. If you expect to advertise your successful Wikipedia creation for your business one day, WP:PAID likely already applies to you.
You can do so only if you are unblocked, but you may like to explicitly agree to these two points in advance to increase the likelihood of that happening.
If you are unblocked, feel free to message me at my talk page if any questions arise. Alternatively, volunteers at the Teahouse can provide independent advice.
Good luck and best regards

Please confirm my status. I see that my username has been changed, and I am logged in with the new name, however when I click to edit this page, I still see a message at the top which states I am blocked, so I presume that is the situation. I am happy to use the "Article Wizard" to create the article; as I say, I want to work within policy; and if using this method will allow me to do so, and be assisted by more experienced Wikipedians, I am happy to go that route. BrianEller (talk) 21:46, 27 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

My account name has been changed, however the account still appears to be blocked. I have stated that I desire to abide by all rules and policies, and that I will use the "Article Wizard" to create any new content. Please advise what needs to happen next. BrianEller (talk) 16:56, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello BrianEller, now that your username has been changed, you need to wait patiently for an admin to review your unblock appeal. This is not the correct help me template for this, in any case - unblock requests are automatically flagged for review and using a helpme template isn't necessary. Waggie (talk) 19:19, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Waggie. I'll wait to be reviewed. BrianEller (talk) 23:38, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
