MUCH apprciated, there are a few towns that are called coal towns due to their proximity, but no coal was mined in that area, nor were there any mines there, HOWEVER, LOTS of miners lived there. I have also seen a few redundant passages on County pages where there is a "other towns" section and these also appear in the Uni9ncorporated template, I think I can condense thiose as well. Otherwise, KLOTS and LOTS of coal towns need to be added. WHEN I get my permissions, I own just over 1000 postmarks from WV and many are of course coal towns. Hi - nice job with the WV town articles. If you don't mind, I noticed that the USGS pages also include coordinates of each, so adding those to the articles would be a good idea. There are so very many places that are unincorprated that at this point, I feel like I am just trying to keep afloat documenting places I recall as a kid or from my relatives. My next adventure will be to create the Coal Town Page where there is an agreed upon Wikipedia definition for a coal town, and its not easy.....much of the literature is ciontradictory and at times, wrong. Venus, Mcdowell County, West Virginia

Hello, I came across the subject article on new page patrol. Currently Venus, West Virginia redirects to Gary, West Virginia, which according to the article is also in McDowell County. I'm not familiar with West Virginia geography; are these the same place? If so, the page with "Mcdowell County" should be moved to the page without the county identification. Penile, Kentucky

While tagging your latest batch of unincorporated communities in Kentucky, I checked out the aforementioned Penile, Kentucky. It actually redirects to Penile, Louisville, which calls it a neighborhood of Louisville. That's not surprising; basically everything in Jefferson County is a neighborhood of Louisville by now. The problem is, now we have that article as well as Penile, Jefferson County, Kentucky, which you created. I can't imagine that they are not the same place. The content of the two needs to be merged instead of having two articles on the same subject. The proper title is probably Penile, Louisville, so if you wouldn't mind, could you merge the content from your new article into that one and leave a redirect to Penile, Louisville at Penile, Jefferson County, Kentucky? Hey, dude. Saw the rather contentious discussion about this. Don't let it get you down. Copyright on WP is a major pain. Unless I can prove 100% that an image was published before 1923, that the author died more than 100 years ago, or that there is a rock-solid notice of free-use permission, I don't even mess with it. I'd recommend that strategy to you as well. It isn't worth the fight in most other cases. I went back-and-forth on three separate occasions with an editor who told me I couldn't claim fair use on a portrait because the editor knew there must be a free equivalent out there since the subject served in the military and as a federal judge. The editor could not produce such an image, but claimed the burden of proof was on me to prove there wasn't such an image, which is, of course, impossible. Don't sweat this kind of stuff. Your other contributions are too important to the project to get bogged down in the quagmire of copyright. Acdixon ^{(talk · contribs)} 15:13, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

CDPs

The reliable list of all places counted by the 2010 census is here; CDPs are under "places", and the state-based files page has the lists for WV and KY. I've found that the GNIS has CDP listings for many places whose listing as a populated place says they are not CDPs; most of these are not on the Census Bureau's list. Actually, it looks like you stumbled onto an error in the GNIS. Montgomery should be listed in Fayette, not Putnam. Even the coords in the database point to the one at the Fayette/Kanawha line (home of WVUIT). There is no Montgomery in Putnam Co. youngamerican (wtf?) 16:43, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Coal Town Guy. I updated your article about Coal Run Village as an “unincorporated” community, linking it to a more extensive article that exists elsewhere in Wikipedia. I do not know if your article is inaccurate or if there is indeed some part of Coal Run Village that is unincorporated, so I played it safe. I live in Germany so my focus is mainly on German mining traditions (amongst many other things!), but it's interesting to see the differences and similarities across the world. Little Kentucky places

Looks like your drive to document little places all over Kentucky is still going well. Kudos on that. My latest project (a massive rewrite of the article on Vice-President and native Kentuckian Alben W. Barkley) has brought me to Wheel, Kentucky, his Graves County birthplace, which is sadly lacking an article. Could you remedy this for me so that I'll have something to link to when I deploy the rewritten article? I'll add the relevant notable natives section with a cite once you're done. Another request: Do you have any information on the community of Rosslyn in Powell County, Kentucky? After being caught in a flash flood, Governor Bert T. Combs' body was found near there. While that probably doesn't rise to the level of something that should be mentioned in a Rosslyn, Kentucky article, it would allow me to create a solid incoming link for the article. Combs is high on my list of articles to target for FA promotion, so creating a blue link for a significant place in Combs' life would also be a benefit. I'll try to remember to tell you when I'm done, because there will surely be pages that I missed, and I expect that you'll be able to find them. On the coal towns category — it's not going to be deleted. I'm simply asking for its name to be changed, since categories for common nouns are supposed to be plural, not singular. Once an administrator accepts the request, a bot should be instructed to go around to all of the articles that are presently in the category and move each one from the old name to the new. Hi-In Knott County, Kentucky, there is supposed to be an unincorporated community called: Wisconsin, Kentucky-GNIS is 517015. I am wondering if this another name for Wiscoal, Kentucky which is also in Knott County. Wisconsin was the namesake of the Wisconsin Coal Company. However, the community was named Wiscoal. They are ALMOSt the same because GNIS has zero data for them as far as local coordinates. Locals know it, but GNIS does not. We would need to find a source or ref to link the two...which I have tried. The closest I got was the KY coal heritage site. Communities in Wisconsin

Hi! I wonder at times how many unincorporated communities existed in Wisconsin that did not make it to the GNIS or the Wisconsin Historical Society. I am thinking about the lumber, railroad, and lead mining industries in the state, etc. I am think also the Native Americans who had their communities also especially on the reservations that never made it to GNIS or the Wisconsin Historical Society. The various counties of Wisconsin have histories about the various towns, city, villages and the unincorporated communities so that helps-Wood County, Wisconsin is a good example. Places for the GNIS

I do have a few places that I want in the GNIS, now that you mention it. I've talked to Lou Yost before, and pointed out a few missing communities in the GNIS (some of which were even on USGS topographic maps), though I haven't mentioned any in a while. I just sent him a few more from Wisconsin, and if I come across any others I'll mention those too (I know there are places missing in other states, I just can't think of them right now). Most of the missing places I find are ones I see on county maps while looking up other places, so references shouldn't be an issue. TheCatalyst31 ^{Reaction•Creation} 18:11, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

I sent him 3 that are rather out of the way. Paint Creek, Take In Hollow and the populated place of Eight in McDowell County. You are really doing some jammin work there, fella. I am not able to dedicate very much time to wikiland these days due to some very pressing RL things. I am also very unable to access much reference material. If it isn't online, I just can't get it. But if I can help you write on any of the stubs you are doing, I would be happy to do so. Just give me a lead and I will be happy to crank out some material. BTW, I think WP:USCITY might have some guidance for you in raising up the rating of articles about settlements. It seems none of your pages have (or, perhaps more accurately, had) the standard two-letter state abbreviation redirects, e.g., "Wakefield, MA" redirecting to "Wakefield, Massachusetts." As you can probably see by my contribs page, I've done quite a few of them. They literally only take about two seconds to create.

I see you have quite the affection for small towns with very unusual or humorous sounding names — as a part-time New Englander, I think I'd have to say my favorite so far is Bread Loaf, Vermont.

Well, I was just following the form was all. I actually first stumbled upon it when I looked up a town you wrote the article for using that form and it didn't redirect as usual. That was actually the first time I had ever encountered that. If you see it as a hindrance, by all means, I'll refrain, but I don't see how it can do any harm in any way.

By the way, if you have photos of vandalised buildings in impoverished places, there's nothing wrong with uploading them. Look at many of the photos for places in Gary at National Register of Historic Places listings in Lake County, Indiana, such as Van Buren Terrace and the Gary Public Schools Memorial Auditorium; it's just as important to get images of these places as it is the more prosperous and better-maintained sites. Yes, feel free to upload the photos and add them to the Store and Office Buildings article, as well as the McDowell County NRHP list and any other pages where they might be relevant. As far as the videos: be careful. They're quite fine by policy, but there are some other difficulties with them. Some editors prefer copyleft over quality service to our readers, so we're forced to upload all videos in the rare ogg format. Moreover, I've never seen them used in articles; while this is probably because we don't have many videos, it does mean that I can't provide you any examples of where videos have been used well. As long as you can figure out how to convert your videos into ogg, they'll definitely be fine at Commons, however. Nyttend (talk) 14:44, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Almost anyone who has been here a while stalks some other editors talk pages. I stalk a bunch! And that is fine; it provides a great way to learn how things work around Wikipedia, and an opportunity to learn from other people's mistakes. I would, however, like you to remove the last comment you posted on my talk page. I don't mind you replying to people on my talk page, but please start it with a notice that you are not me (something like: (talk page stalker)), and please, please...use a tone like the answers that are given at Teahouse. Be friendly, not confrontational, and be as positive as you can in your answer. I actually kind of appreciate you watching, because I am not here as much as I would like to be anymore; but if someone needs their ass chewed for something they posted on my talk page, I would prefer to be the one that does it. I will most likely go to that fellas talk page tonite and explain again why it is actually better not to have any connection to the place you are writing about. But I am thinking he is what we call a WP:SPA and as such, probably won't be interested in what makes for a good edit at his school's page. It needs some work, but here is what I have found. Garneill, which is the historical reference, has a cemetery also called, the Ubet cemetery. BUT, the real deal is that Judith Gap Post Office was originally established as the Ubet Post office. SO, Judith Gap is in Wheatland County, The cemetery is in Judith Basin County and Garneill, the historic reference is in Fergus county. SO, we need to get a consensus, IMO, and I stress, IMO, the "tradition" has been that the PO should be the indicator of a town, SO, that means that this place is a former name for Judith Gap. BONUS: If you take a look at the Judith Gap PO entry in GNIS, it lays down a history of the Ubet PO. IF, there are no objections, Ubet would then need to be in Wheatland County.
