Kyu Sakamoto

Hi, I've undone your edit to Kyu Sakamoto, because frankly it made absolutely no sense. His song "Sukiyaki" was already mentioned in the section above the one you edited, so his second hit in the U.S. could not have been "Sukiyaki". Graham87 04:56, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I realise now from reading your user page that English isn't your native language, so maybe my above message was a bit harsh. I just want you to be more careful when editing articles. I was only reading the Kyu Sakamoto article because of a recent related news story - Kyu Sakamoto was killed on Japan Airlines Flight 123. I wonder how long your error would have survived if I hadn't caught it? Also keep in mind that most Wikipedia readers don't know how to use the page history on Wikipedia, so they would've probably just removed the section; we therefore would have lost good information because of your edit. I might be harping on about this, but when I find nonsense in an article, it was usually added by unregistered users, not users with thousands of edits, so I'm somewhat concerned by your edit to Kyu Sakamoto. No, that's not what you did. The article already had a section about Sukiyaki. The next section mentioned a completely different song called "China Nights", and you changed it so it mentioned "Sukiyaki" again, which was completely wrong. Read the revision of your edit very carefully. It contains two sections entitled "Sukiyaki", and says that the song peaked at #1 on the Billboard charts and #58 on the billboard charts, which is impossible. Graham87 03:42, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Dear Wikipedians, my block was my very own fault. I'll tell you my history from my point of view. I started editing here, I don't remember why, adding false information about me on Diego Grez. I admit I liked Hannah Montana at the time, but I don't know why that spamming thing. I was 11 and after some time, I decided to back for good, doing good things and trying to fulfill my past. I left the wiki for a year and some, until I've got my own Internet connection on my home. I thought that my case was forgotten and even I tried to appeal my unblock on es.wiki. (Regarding the comment of someone at ANI, I was blocked previously on these wikis and I wanted to request here and so on). I've emailed an steward that gave me an opportunity (an unblock request at the village pump over there). It lasted in the third week of December because no admin unblocked me. The things went fine until my rollback was removed because of misuse, something I admit. I tried to expand the most I would Pichilemu, because I wanted it to get (at least to) GA, as it is one of my most-known topics before the History of Chile and Modern Talking. Piss-on-elmo and calling the admins nazis was the thing that caused this block, and I thought it was going to be shorter, and it was my fault. Since that, I tried to do the things better, on Wikinews (where I am accredited reporter) and on Simple Wiki, in addition to the Spanish Wikinews, the Latin Wikipedia, English Wiktionary and the Chamoru Wikipedia, a wiki that is almost forgotten. Additionally, I saw that my other account, Bodoque57, was not blocked on Commons, and I requested block on IRC. On Wikinews, my contributions about the recent Chile earthquake have been very appreciated and the community has been very, hmm, good. As it is not Wikinews, Wikinoticias, Wiktionary or Vicipaedia, I come here to ask you, Wikipedians, to unblock me, I want to show you that I have matured through all this time and I don't want to get in troubles anymore. • You agree only to edit in your own or in my userspace where you can draft things and where I and others can keep an eye on you
• You seek my approval for any edit outside of your own or my userspace
• You agree to be subject to an enforceable 1 revert per article per day (not including blatant vandalism)
• You agree that any violation of the above will result in an immediate, indefinite block and you accept that I can't help you if that happens

If you're agreeable to that, I will do everything I possibly can to help you and hopefully you'll be unblocked. Once you've spent a month or two proving yourself, we might be able to look at easing them. I know these seem quite harsh, but I can't see any other way the community will let you back. • DG, I would strongly encourage you to not to take advantage of offers like this. I don't understand, for example, encouragement to restore a guestbook; that demonstrates a complete 100% lack of clue about what is going on here. These kinds of offers, while no doubt made in good faith, are likely to mistakenly lead you to do something outside your restrictions, and get you blocked; quite possibly by me. In the strongest terms I can, I encourage you to only work with HJ Mitchell and Xeno for now, at least until they suggest otherwise. The slim consensus at ANI was achieved because HJ Mitchell was marketed as your mentor. Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. If it's HJ Mitchell, it should be ok - but I wasn't impressed with the delete vote being copied over to that AFD by NSD. That's probably colouring outside the lines: if I were HJ Mitchell, I would've told you that it's too soon to be participating in AFDs - even by proxy (excluding articles you created or substantially edited).

I don't think that's what Xeno meant- something totally uncontroversial, like correcting a mistagged image to save it from deletion or comments in an AfD for an article in which Diego has an involvement are one thing and I greatly appreciate you helping with that when I'm not available- I'm not on 24 hours a day and Diego and I are in diffferent time zones. However, edits to the mainspace and other things in which Diego isn't directly involved are more controversial and should only be done by me otherwise it would seem to be a violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the restrictions. I'm in agreement with Xeno that it's too soon for you (Diego) to be participating in AfDs other than those in which you have an involvement and you shouldn't be asking for controversial edits to the mainspace- ie anything more than categories, typos etc. Keep working on your drafts and try to keep your head down- someone in your position should be trying to attract as little attention to themselves as possible. Given I haven't seen the IRC logs and don't want/need to, I understand what you've said about this and am willing to take your word for it, all I'm saying is, when you're on IRC, please make it very clear you're not talking about anything you'd like to see happen on en.WP (while the restrictions last), since even seeming to do so will stir up too many worries. This said, while I think folks can and should be able to use IRC as they please and I do understand that some editors may find IRC handy for talking about how to handle something on more than one wiki at a time, either way, off-wiki editorial discussions about content on en.WP have zero sway as to consensus, hence I'd say it's almost always more helpful to keep meaningful editorial discussions on each wiki, with links to discussions on other wiki talk pages if need be. Hello. I wanted to let you know that I'm working on this audio file. There's a few things that I'm going to do to make it come in line with our fair use policies. The things that relate to the physical file I can do, but there is something that you can do also that might help it stick around here on Wikipedia.

The main thing is that the article that uses it, She Wants to Dance with Me, is only a few sentences long, and doesn't specifically discuss the content of that song. That's one of the fair use policy requirements; that the article's actually have sourced commentary about the song itself. Would you mind helping out with that part of it? Thanks. WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Hunter Kahn (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Two of last year's final 8, Theleftorium (submissions) and Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. • I did a copyedit for English/grammar; here.

• I changed bought the enterprise to their father to bought the enterprise from their father - I think that's what you meant?

• It's not 'standard' to have the place names in with the date of birth/death in the brackets; it's a bit confusing. At first, I didn't know why it said "Valparaíso" and "Santiago" there. I'd remove them, and just use them within the actual body-text, ie Recaredo Santos Tornero (October 14, 1842 – July 26, 1902) was a Chilean editor then later Tornero was born in Valparaíso, Chile, ... .

• You wrote, In 1866, Recaredo ... - usually, we use surname, ie In 1866, Tornero ...; but maybe it is different for Chilean people, I'm not sure.

• on the eve of the Revolution - a) I don't think that "Revolution" needs a capital R, b) which revolution? Can you wikilink it?

• He died... does not have a reference.

• I don't think you need the section heading == Biography == at all; the whole thing is a bio, and having just one one section heading seems unnecessary.

• You should not have an image left-aligned at the top of a section, and you shouldn't have text squashed up between images/infoboxes. If you remove the "Biography" section heading and remove 'left', then the pic will automatically appear below the infobox, on the right-hand side. You might not think it looks so good there, but at least it will work on all browsers. Also, you should remove the 'forced image size' of 150px; users can set their own preference for thumbnail sizes in their preferences, so you should only force the size when absolutely necessary.

Putting an AfC on hold without explaining the issue is about the most counter-productive thing I can imagine. So far as I can see, there are no major issues with the article, and the author is as confused as I am. If you genuinely feel that this should be put on hold, please at least provide a reason, so that the article can be worked on by the person who originally submitted it or others. I see now that you didn't even leave the author a note- again, really not on. AfC is important work- not only are you going to be judge, jury and executioner for a potential article, but there's a strong chance that you give the first impressions of Wikipedia to a potential new contributor. I have taken a look at some more of your AfC work. this does not have serious POV issues, and should not have been declined- instead, putting on hold and allowing the user to make some changes would have been appropriate. Also, the fact you didn't even welcome the new users, and just slapped them with "YOUR ARTICLE HAS BEEN REJECTED" notices, is a little troubling. Again, you are the face of Wikipedia for newcomers. After reading the last half dozen versions, I've sent it to AfD. It's never had any references, and I'm not convinced that there is a generic term 'spiky hairdo' that's in general use - even though I remember spiky hairdos from the first time round in the UK punk era. WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). Chile maps

Hi. Note that there is consensus between myself and another active Chile editor User:Ruodyssey that all maps of Chile for pin should be 175 px not 80px. its far too small. We understand that the map is long but even 175 is a lot smaller than 250px standard. If you come across any articles where the maps are 80 please change them to 175 thanks. We have our final eight! The best of luck to those who remain. A bumper newsletter this week as we start our home straight.

• Pool A's winner was Sturmvogel_66 (submissions). Awarded the top score overall this round, Sturmvogel_66 writes primarily on military history, favouring Naval warfare.
• Pool B's winner was Casliber (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured articles this round, Casliber writes primarily on natural sciences, especially botany and ornithology.
• Pool A's close second was Sasata (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured pictures this round, Sasata writes primarily on natural sciences, favouring mycology.
• Pool B's close second was ThinkBlue (submissions). Awarded the top score for good articles and topics this round, ThinkBlue primarily writes content related to television and film, including 30 Rock.
• The first wildcard was TonyTheTiger (submissions). Awarded the top score for did you knows and valued pictures this round, TonyTheTiger writes on a number of topics, including baseball, American football and Chicago.
• The second wildcard was White Shadows (submissions). Someone who has helped the Cup behind the scenes all year, White Shadows said "I'm still in shock that I made it this far" and writes primarily on Naval warfare, especially U-boats.
• The third wildcard was Staxringold (submissions). Awarded the top score for featured lists and topics this round, Staxringold primarily writes on sport and television, including baseball and 30 Rock.
• The fourth wildcard was William S. Saturn (submissions). Entering the final eight only on the final day of the round, William S. Saturn writes on a number of topics, mostly related to Texas.

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle. Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight. Resolute (submissions) was not far behind. Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. I would have to strongly agree with Eugen. Is this what you wanted to get deleted 2010 Canterbury earthquake. It was on the MP in the ITN section in case you missed. Yes, but they not necessarily inherit notability. Not all of the news events merit an article on Wikipedia, and that's why I asked Eugen to consider if the event is notable, because he creates articles for every single earthquake!. I understand your frustration. People who disagree with you can really wind you and their comments often seem ludicruous. I've often felt shocked at how some people could not think certain articles encyclopedic or certsin proposal worthy on here. It is best to take a few days away and resume when it has died down. As for your library article. I've voted to keep it but you must learn to accept that some people may not see things the way you do. It is likely that the info will be merged into the main articles if it can't be expanded so nothing will be lost. You are doing great work on Chile which I, Ser Amantio and many others are very pleased about. You are more valuable than you think towards removing systematic bias on here so please don't let one moment of conflict stop you from editing. This happens on here,, it can mostly be avoided if the articles are adequately sourced and contain encyclopedic info but there are exepctions when some editors seem to lose all sense of what this project is about. Please remove your retired tag and place it with wikibreak if this is your intention and i hope to see you continuing to edit in a few days time. Your work is 100 times more valuable here than at wikinews, as her eyou get the chance to write about virtually any Chilean related topic and are not restricted to just writing about news, maybe I am biased. I renamed the 'background' section to 'prediction' as that is all it covers. I'm a little unsure about that section at the moment, it gives the impression that he genuinely predicted the earthquake, rather than it being a lucky (unlucky) coincidence. You were wondering "who removed this pic? Take a look at 99.245.240.194 (talk · contribs). They appear to have removed it at least 2 times. I think another IP has too. Their objection seems to be it is "a fake". If it is a 'reproduction' of the original then we should say it in the caption, ie. 'Facsimile' or 'reproduction' of the note. Hi, I merely wanted to draw attention to the fact that there has been vandalism of the page of the movie 'charlie st cloud' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_St._Cloud_(film)) by a user at IP 71.228.232.37 I would revert these edits myself, however I am uaware of the warning to be posted on 71.228.232.37's talk page, and if there are any other steps that should be taken. I would find out, however I am currently on a mobile device which makes editing difficult. Esto permite homogeneizar las fotos y, también, una rápida identificación del candidato.

Noté, además, que en el historial de File:Piñera_crop.jpg has agregado "If you want to use that version, reupload it under a different name i.e. Piñera crop 2.jpg. Thanks.", pero cuando alguien hace exactamente eso, tu vas artículo por artículo eliminando la nueva foto.

Hello. I think this version is better suited for articles on presidential elections than this other version, mainly because it focuses on the subject's head, as in the rest of the candidates's headshots. This allows for quick subject identification and for the harmonizing of the photos.

Pichilemu Fault

Hi Diego, I've taken a look at the Pichilemu Fault article and tweaked the language a bit, although my spanish is a lot less than perfect. My main concern is that the fault has not yet been definitively named as the 'Pichilemu Fault' or 'Falla de Pichilemu' in any available scientific source, only in various news reports in which the quoted seismologists use no specific name. Until it is formally named, I think that it would be better to merge the content of the fault article into the earthquake article. There is a similar story for both the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, in which rupture along previously undescribed faults caused the earthquakes, but the structures have yet to be named. Probably best to wait until a name is clearly established, unless you have a source that quotes a seismologist using the term of course. In part, I suppose I'm trying to forestall somebody taking this to AfD, where I'm not convinced that it would survive. Within a few months, scientific reports will start to appear and things will be a lot clearer, hopefully. Anyway, I will include a section on this in the earthquake article, without using a specific fault name. I'll leave it to you to decide whether to redirect the fault article there or wait for better sources to appear (as I'm sure they will eventually, although you may have to change the name) and accept the risk of AfD for now. An important image was deleted from the Mining Accident article

Hello... I just wanted to inform you that the CommonsDelinker bot removed the "Estamos_bien_los_33.svg" image, from the 2010 Copiapó mining accident article, because it has apparently been deleted from Commons by Jameslwoodward. Not sure totally what's going on...but that was an important image. The message from the trapped miners that they were ok, all 33, etc. I was wondering if you (in your experience and skill) can maybe somehow get another copy of that image back, onto Wikipedia, and onto that Mining accident article. It was a very good digital representation of the note the miners wrote...and is historical. And it arguably SHOULD be on this article. Let me know what you can do. Hopefully it can be restored. New Years Message for WikiProject United States

With the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. Haha! I read that article like four or five months ago, while I was investigating that period of the history of Chile. It seems weird that a man, coming from France to an almost unknown land, self-proclaimed the king of that unknown land! Anyway, he was supported by the Mapuches, but his kingdomship(?) didn't last for much because of the occupation of the Araucanía.. Oh how interesting is the history of my country! Getting to the point, I'll add that article to my to-do list, it will be fun to take it to the GA spot, and there is a lot of bibliography on him. Cheers! Yes this article caught me by surprise when I first read it. To see that article as a GA would be interesting. I'm probably going to make an article forthe current king(pretender?) of the kingdom. And, Felipe apparently has renounced to the claims to the kingdom. Orélie-Antoine's life is so interesting, and funny that it will be very, very pleasant to write about him. • That's good, but you could divide (perhaps) the Southern Cone section into Patagonia (most of which is Argentina's) and Southern Chile. Hello there! I apologize for my errors - I'm definitely learning as I go and am trying to make all of the necessary edits asap! Everyone here has been so nice and patient! I'm trying to develop a wikipedia page and I now understand the rules much better than when I started earlier today. I'm finding as many sources as I can and am being careful with wording. I just saw your note now and again, I am learning as I go on how to maneuver through the site! I wish there were more hours in a day. March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. I know its very late after the argument if the kingdom exsisted on the talk page but i found something will working on Philippe I article. I found a reference from a book on google books that says that Philippe I of Araucania and Patagonia has a letter from the Counsul of El Savador in Houstan that recognizes him as king in exile. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your post at the Wiki Guides project. First, I want to say thank you very much for sticking with this project we call Wikipedia. It shows a real sense of commitment on your part and I appreciate it. You have been a model Wikipedian and had to go through a lot to get here.

I believe Wikipedia has a problem with the way it treats users, especially new users. I don't think Wikipedia understands how users feel when they try to contribute — not understanding the rules — and then having their efforts deleted and being scolded too. I have been researching this for the past couple of months. Sometime in the next couple months, I am hoping to write up some basic changes to make Wikipedia a more friendly place. I would like to ask some questions and get your input and suggestions sometime in the next few weeks. I think your viewpoint would be extremely valuable considering all that you have gone through. WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. Hey Diego, I'm growing weary of the debates over this image. I know the image was provided by Chilean government contracted equipment for free to the world's media. Unfortunately the article is most likely buried within the pay section of the English language newspaper Santiago Times. Can you use your language skills to locate a similar article on a free site, even if it's in Spanish, or find a good email contact for the Ministry of Mining so we can get some clarification on this? Perhaps invite them to review the article, I'm sure they would be supportive of it. The rescue images (transmitted by television) were released to the public domain, as stated here. "Además, durante el proceso se mantendrá una de las tónicas de los dos meses de encierro: las imágenes se dan primero a las familias y luego saldrán al dominio público." - "Also, during the process [of rescue] the manner [in which videos were treated] during the two months inside the mine [will be kept]: the images will be given firstly to the families [of the miners] and then they will be released to the public domain." A drink

On 29 March 2009, I took my first small steps as a Wikipedian.

Now, 2 years, 47,000 edits, 2 RfAs and many memories later, I'd like to share a drink, on my "wiki-birthday", with a few editors who made my early experience here a pleasant one. As much as I would like to thank each of those editors in non-templated fashion, or even buy them a drink in person, I fear I would be celebrating my fourth wiki-birthday (and very drunk!) before the task was complete. Thus, please accept this as a small, if slightly impersonal, token of what these collaborations, words of advice and moments shared have meant to me.

WikiCup 2011 March newsletter

We are half way through round two of the WikiCup, which will end on 28 April. Of the 64 current contestants, 32 will make it through to the next round; the two highest in each pool, and the 16 next highest scorers. At the time of writing, our current overall leader is Hurricanehink (submissions) with 231 points, who leads Pool H. Piotrus (submissions) (Pool G) also has over 200 points, while 9 others (three of whom are in Pool D) have over 100 points. Remember that certain content (specifically, articles/portals included in at least 20 Wikipedias as of 31 December 2010 or articles which are considered "vital") is worth double points if promoted to good or featured status, or if it appears on the main page in the Did You Know column. There were some articles last round which were eligible for double points, but which were not claimed for. For more details, see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring.

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round three is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! Thank you for your participation in the March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive

On behalf of User:Wizardman and myself, we would like to take the time and thank you for your contributions made as part of the March 2011 Good articles backlog elimination drive. Awards and barnstars will go out shortly for those who have reviewed a certain number of articles.

During the backlog drive, in the month of March 2011,

• 522 GA nominations were undertaken.
• 423 GA nominations passed.
• 72 GA nominations failed.
• 27 GA nominations were on hold.

We started the GA backlog elimination drive with 378 GA nominations remaining, with 291 that were not reviewed at all. By 2:00, April 1, 2011, the backlog was at 171 GA nominations, with 100 that were left unreviewed.

At the start of the drive, the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 101 days (Andrei Kirilenko (politician), at 20 November 2010, reviewed and passed 1 March 2011); at the end of the drive the oldest unreviewed GA nomination was 39 days (Gery Chico, at 24 February 2011, still yet to be reviewed as of this posting).

While we did not achieve the objective of getting the backlog of outstanding GA nominations down to below 50, we reduced the GA backlog by over half. The GA reviews also seemed to be of a higher quality and have consistently led, to say the least, to marginal improvements to those articles (although there were significant improvements to many, even on the some of the nominations that were failed).

If you would like to comment on the drive itself and maybe even make suggestions on how to improve the next one, please make a comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/March 2011#Feedback. Another GA backlog elimination drive is being planned for later this year, tentatively for September or October 2011. You just said "the majority of tornado outbreaks [...]" occur in the United States, so... it's kind of obvious that the name of the country should be in the title, how the hell would I know if the outbreak was in the UK, Russia, the US, or Mexico? WikiCup 2011 April newsletter

Round 2 of the 2011 WikiCup is over, and the new round will begin on 1 May. Note that any points scored in the interim (that is, for content promoted or reviews completed on 29-30 April) can be claimed in the next round, but please do not start updating your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. Fewer than a quarter of our original contestants remain; 32 enter round 3, and, in two months' time, only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), who led Pool F, was our round champion, with 411 points, while 7 contestants scored between 200 and 300 points. At the other end of the scale, a score of 41 was high enough to reach round 3; more than five times the score required to reach round 2, and competition will no doubt become tighter now we're approaching the later rounds. Those progressing to round 3 were spread fairly evenly across the pools; 4 progressed from each of pools A, B, E and H, while 3 progressed from both pools C and F. Pools D and G were the most successful; each had 5 contestants advancing.

I took the liberty of updating some parameters in my photo-editing software. The changes should show up across all wikis using the photo in the next day or so. Monkey userpage

I recently reverted your change to another user's userpage.

The relevant policy is Wikipedia:User pages, which says "Extremely offensive material may be removed on sight by any editor" ... and also suggests that it should be removed "if user page activity becomes disruptive to the community or gets in the way of the task of building an encyclopedia".

"Simulation and disruption of the MediaWiki interface" is the section that I think you want, but it goes on to say "by preventing important links or controls from being easily seen or used, making text on the page hard to read or unreadable (other than by way of commenting out), or replacing the expected interface with a disruptive simulation, may be removed or remedied by any user. Inappropriate internal or external links that unexpectedly direct the reader to unreasonable locations or violate prohibitions on linking may also be removed or remedied by any user".

I don't feel the content in question meets those requirements. The section open to dispute here is "replacing the expected interface with a disruptive simulation" (my emphasis).

WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.

There's no such pretty active community for it, rather an user who denies the existence of certain singers contracted for the choruses, and refuses everything that says anything bad about Dieter Bohlen, that's clear if you read the archives of the Modern Talking talk page. WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.

Deletion of

You proposed that Guy-Greenbrier earthquake swarm be deleted. This is a sourced article and an on-going event. A Google search finds numerous sources that could be included. I'm curious why this considered an uncontroversial deletion? If you thought that it was non-notable — despite the article passing the usual Google search litmus tests — why not initiate a discussion on the talk page first to allow a few days for editors to respond? The deletion process has become perhaps the most off-putting aspect of Wikipedia to new editors. I've been around here for a while so a proposed deletion of my articles, like this one, doesn't phase me. But if this article had been created by a new editor, it certainly would have contributed to the harmful and popular idea that Wikipedia is controlled by a few editors and perhaps resulted in that new editor not contributing further. People at the Strategy Wiki keep wondering about editor retention and keep assuming that a gender bias, blah blah blash, is the reason all the while ignoring obvious problems like deletionism. Stay safe and read carefully

I did not threaten to cut off hands. Pearlasia Gamboa did, for using these reliable and verifiable sources. Then she threatened numerous editors for applying WIkipedia standards. There was just a major 5 page news story about her and this, and much discussion of threats against the editors who simply applied RS and V standards.

There was just a major 5 page news story in the San Francisco Weekly on threats to Wikipedians. Can you help restore the content, but modify the poster's wording and phrasing, so that the "quotation" of Pearlasia Gamaboa's threat against Wikipedians does not, itself, look like a threat, so as to allow discussion?

Do not intimidate her. According to the Swedish press, a member of her crime ring already cut up someone's hands for posting information on the crime ring. There is strength and safety in numbers of editors using WP:V and WP:RS.

There is also much discussion now about further using the "improving of Wikipedia" under its V and RS standards, to help in the middle east upheaval.

He decidido contarte la historia, porque me pareció justo y preciso, contarte la verdad, visto que a cuánto veo eres un mancebo preciso y en forma. por este te pregunto si puedes serme de ayuda, colaborando con yo como traductor en inglés sobre articulas venezolanos.

En cambio te juro que te ayudaré a traducir lo que querrás en italiano, sicilianas y otras lenguas en mi conocimiento, tienen también amigos en muchos rincones de la tierra para pedir favores de traducciones. del ruso a las lenguas europeas más menores.

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

• Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
• PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
• Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
• Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
• Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
• Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
• Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
• Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Grandiose (submissions), Stone (submissions), Eisfbnore (submissions), Canada Hky (submissions) and MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Miyagawa (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

Chile Albums Chart

Hello Diego Grez! I just thought you might be interested in the Chile Albums Chart. While researching on Luis Miguel Segundo Romance, I came across Billboard's "Hits of the World" and they included a weekly albums chart from Chile. WikiCup 2011 October newsletter

The 2011 WikiCup is now over, and our new champion is Hurricanehink (submissions), who joins the exclusive club of the previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009) and Sturmvogel_66 (2010). The final standings were as follows:

In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

• The Featured Article Award: Casliber (submissions), for his performance in round 2. Hurricanehink (submissions) matched the score, but Casliber won the tiebreaker.
• The Good Article Award: Yellow Evan (submissions), for his performance in round 4.
• The Featured List Award: Miyagawa (submissions), for his performance in round 4. PresN (submissions) matched the score, but Miyagawa won the tiebreaker.
• The Recognised Topic Award (for good and featured topics): PresN (submissions), for his performance in round 3.
• The Did You Know Award: The Bushranger (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
• The In the News Award: Candlewicke (submissions), for his performance in round 1.
• The Reviewer Award (for good article reviews): Wizardman (submissions), for his performance in round 3.

No prize was awarded for featured pictures, sounds or portals, as none were claimed throughout the competition. The awards will be handed out over the next few days. Congratulations to all our participants, and especially our winners; we've all had fun, and Wikipedia has benefitted massively from our content work.

Preparation for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Interested parties are invited to sign up and participate in our straw polls.
