Quilchena Elementary School (Vancouver, British Columbia)

Usgnus, I think to prevent further confusion going forward, we need to create the Richmond school article. I put in the disambiguation page last week, but I'd really like to see an article for the 2nd school with that same name. I'll keep an eye out for it -- if you don't have time to do it today, I'll try to get it done tomorrow. Vancouver article

First I would like to recognize your good work in improving the article. I have enjoyed working with you and think that we make a pretty good team. We had our first edit war disagreement over what schools and colleges should be included. I remember some time back I tried to include Douglas College in the article and got told by another editor that "this is an article on Vancouver." I was steamed, but I recognized that he had a point.

Many editors have agreed that the article was far to long and with our work, we have reduced it considerably. To do that we have to stick to a few basic principles. I think that the city boundaries suggest a guideline that works fairly well (though it is not perfect). Both SFU and BCIT are in Burnaby. However, since they both have downtown campuses, they qualify. Cap College and Douglas are tough to exclude, IMO, but where do we stop? Then, if we include Kwantlan, what about Trinity Western and UCFV? They are only a few km apart. Thoughts? Sunray 06:30, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Vancouver neighbourhoods

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the polishing you've been doing on some of the neighbourhood articles I've been putting together, adding the maps, etcetera. Community template

Thanks for your comment about your desire to standardize the template for places in BC. There are two used across Canada: one for Cities and the other for towns/villages/hamlets, etc. Your BC template has a few features I like and perhaps should be included in the Canadian Town template. I'd like to see some consistency across Canada if that's possible. I'd appreciate your input. Cheers, Cadillac 03:16, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your offer to standardize these templates. I am not great at doing it since I merely "borrow" from the work of others. The Canadian Town template has been modified by others and it still has some shortcomings. It needs a better way to include the community's logo and flag. I like the idea of the link to former mayors (a number of towns use it). You use the term "altitude" while the other uses "elevation." The name in "blue" could possibly change for each province. I see Alberta likes red and Sask would probably want green. Are you able to combine the BC template with the Canadian town template to come up with a modified Canadian town template? Thanks again. Usgnus, I see you're in the middle of adding a truckload of gizmos to the Infobox template because of this person who feels he "owns" St. George. Beware of the complexity being added, as it will make it harder in the future for new editors to add the infobox to new articles (the complexity will drive people away) and it also can make it harder to maintain this template. Otherwise, incredible job in bending over backwards to please someone over an article!

Somewhat related: on the infobox page, I'm thinking of splitting things into 2 parts. The first part would say "if you are adding a template to a new article, then here are the fields you'll want to consider", and the 2nd part would list *all* of the fields (the way we do now) even including the duplicate deprecated fields, the tweaked colour and size fields, etc... This will make it easier for the first-time user to pick the right (simplest) fields to use. What do you think? --Stephane Charette 23:47, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

The other entries in Category:Comprehensive schools in London have not been "piped" so the "The" is ignored. So if you really want to change it, you should do the others too. I would say in this case it doesnt matter either way. Mrsteviec 19:55, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for finding that pic; kinda need someone to gussy up a little logo-thingy for any WikiProject-BC-stub (probably need more than one stub for various purposes; that's the whole point of the WikProject, enit? i.e. so far we've got/should have BritishColumbia-geo-stub, BritishColumbia-poli-stub, BritishColumbia-bio-stub, BritishColumbia-gov-stub (same as poli-stub, would it be? Or not?) and BritishColumbia-hist-stub. Possibly BC-park-stub, too, come to think of it. BC-geo-stub has that outline-graphic of the province's shape; surely we can do better for the others. If I was a graphics person (which I'm not) I'd zip some logos up; and I guess we can tolerate a totem-y figure on one of them (hist-stub maybe); I always did like that garbage-can design from the WAC/Gaglardi era of Highways, and the totem on the old 50-cent piece.....Skookum1 21:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Category sorting

I was thinking of it as University of Ontario Institute of Technology. That's why I thought it should sort under O in the categories

Living Shangri-La

There is a lot of confusion about the "Living Shangri-la" and "Shangri-la Hotel Vancouver" monikers. I saw that you suggested merging the two articles, but I don't think that's necessary. One article should describe the building (Living Shangri-la) and the other should describe the hotel that will be occupying a few of its floors. Although that's not exactly clear from the articles as they are now. Gump Stump 21:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

One Wall Centre does not have a separate article for its Sheraton hotel. Most of the hotels in Vancouver do not have articles. One article for the building is sufficient. The hotel can have a section in the building article. -- Usgnus 23:35, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Confusion over North Vancouver Entries

Currently there are 3 entries for North Vancouver, 2 of which are linked - District and City. There is, however, also this entry: North Vancouver - North Vancouver, British Columbia.

When I linked the District page to this particular page, the link was deleted. What would the rationale for that be? Can this 3rd page of info not be included somehow?

Usgnus, thanks for all of the feedback on the new WikiProject proposal for Education in Canada. And also for cleaning up the various school articles where I somehow keep getting the categories wrong. "last updated" field

I noticed on Yorkhill Elementary School and other school articles, you and other editors are filling in "Last updated" with today's date. I have a concern with this. I've generally (not perfectly) used the date the information is current. Sometimes that's a specific day, just a month, a year, or a semester/term. Generally, enrollment is announced by a school only once or twice a year. The fact the article was edited on a particular date, is unimportant, if the underlying data is old. Now, I'm not saying its wrong to record the date the information was edited. However, I feel the date the information was current (particularly enrollment) should never be changed unless/until the information (e.g. enrollment) is actually changed. --Rob 02:38, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Knox Grammar School

I notice you reverted a change to the motto of Knox Grammar School, and called it vandalism. Actually, the school's motto is in Latin, and is commonly translated in both ways (as is discussed later on the page). Therefore I don't see any reason for preferring either translation, so it is probably unfair to call it vandalism. 99of9 05:56, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Islands that are not communities

Like most things in Wikipedia, there are no absolutely hard and fast rules about whether geographical entities (like islands, rivrs, mountains, etc.) should be disambiguated with parentheses or a comma. Wikipedia:WikiProject Rivers#Multiple rivers with the same name and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mountains#Naming_conventions suggest parentheses for these. The form is particularly applicable in the U.S. where there are countless communities named after a geographical feature, which may or may not even be close by. In some cases, where the community and the feature are closely connected, there's little problem, but typically articles about geographic features and communities have very different conventions for organizing the content so it makes sense to separate them. Editors from other countries, like New Zealand (and perhaps Australia) have decided to use comma disambiguation for all of their place names. Well, I could argue that, by making the normaltext start at the same height as the box,it actually looks better. Hatnotes is not policy or even guideline (although having a statement about hatnotes/boxes order in WP:GTL would be good), so I won't revert back should you choose to revert my change. Neighbourhoods and GF

Hi Usgnus. I saw you checked my comments on Coal Harbour; not quite sure why the WP:GF response but I guess it's because of my habitual glibness with such comments. I think throughout the Vancouver neighbourhoods it's important to distinguish between the city's formal designations (most of which are post-1990s) and the historical realities/contexts. In Coal Harbour's case it seems you've added the West Hastings rider, which helps cut out the Bentall, Melville, Hyatt and all the other stuff; I can live with the buildings on the north side of Hastings, sort of, but in general I don't like the way the city has revised its own history as part of a propertly-marketing job. You may recall the discussions about Lower Mainland and once again we're up against what a government uses a term for, and what it really means...(or did, until the government fiddled with the definitions for its own purposes)Skookum1 18:14, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, according to your comments on the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Musicals/General page you have had some experience in infobox code. Things in common

I'm following ICMP tunnel which led me to Image:DiagramNeeded.gif and then to Event monitoring. I'm thinking of cleaning up Event monitoring since the intro reads as a cross between link spamming and original research, when who do I see but you in the edit history from earlier this year cleaning up and wikifying. I have a feeling the two of us have more in common than simply WP:EiC. Anyway, somewhat related to all this, here are some possible issues I've run across tonight:

Pseudoscalar

Parks in British Columbia cat re change on Victory Square

Hi; saw your change to Victory Square's category; I'm surprised there's not a Vancouver parks cat; you'd think there would be; especially since GVRD-wide there's tons of them. My concern with the Parks in British Columbia category is that it's going to be huge once all prov, RD, fed and municipal parks are added in. Wouldn't a subcat hierarchy be more workable? Saw your response on my talk page and agree about not all parks being worthy; but even in the city of Van it's a list: Hastings, Queen E, Stanley, Jericho, Vanier, Pacific Spirit, China Creek etc, which have some history or other significance to them; and no doubt people will want their own neighbourhood greenspace added in, like that new insta-park at Homer and Davie, as we've seen with "invented neighbourhoods" (remember "Dickens"?); but I'm not the sort to leap in and invent categories because I don't know the existing hierarchies well enough. One little tidbit park comes to mind that's almost worth a blurb is that little creek just west of where Point Grey Road meets MacDonald; it was featured in the film That Cold Day In The Park ([[Robert Altman|Altman]'s first-and-worst, they say...); can't remember what it's called right now...

Might as well take the time now to invite you to sign up for the draft BC WikiProject at User:Buchanan-Hermit/WikiProject-Sandbox, where tonight I fielded the idea by Buchanan-Hermit that the model for project organization cooked up by the incredible Phædriel ♥ tell me for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America (q.v. her revamp as of the last few days) be used to help coordinate what obviously will be a vast and complicated set of articles/issues and sundry; he wanted input from other editors but only he and me (he and I?) are signed up so far, and the project's not "gone official" of course; he's no slouch in the formatting department himself as the User:Buchanan-Hermit page demonstrates. But given that suggestion, it also seems a propos that maybe Phaedriel's layout be applied/adapted to the Vancouver WikiProject also; I know only a few people bit at those table formats I tried introducing, but if the project layout were made less unwieldy they'd work in just fine. Give 'er some thought and pls feedback; and also pls consider the BC Wikiproject, which I think it's high time for (esp. since OR, ID and AK have 'em going, and WA and AB aren't far behind)....Skookum1 09:13, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

BTW re Education in Canada project

I don't have a copy so can't cite you a page ref, but FYI I was somewhat stunned while reading Francis Decker's Pemberton: History of a Settlement to discover that correspondence courses for elementary and high school were first introduced anywhere in response to pressure and ideas from parents in the Birken-Gates Valley (between Pemberton-Mt Currie and D'Arcy) in the first decade of the 20th Century. Not sure where that fits into existing education articles but if that's one of your WikiFields I thought you might like to know that. Turns out, as an unrelated aside, it was a farmer up there (but in the Pemberton Valley, i.e. the Lilloet River Valley) who was the first to recognize iodine as a cure for goiter (in cattle, originally).Skookum1 09:16, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
