Thanks for your help. I am working on gathering better references to update my citations. Taryndejesus (talk) 06:27, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Taryndejesus. I'm sorry to have put so many tags in your article, but you have quite a bit of work to do to bring it up to standard, I'm afraid. I was surprised there weren't more sources out there on his work as a radio host or for his charity work, but you really need to find some more reliable sources so we can verify what he's up to and is suitable for an article. I'm happy to help if I can, just post a note here or on my talk page. Best wishes, Bigger digger (talk) 12:29, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I understand, and I appreciate your guidance. Part of the problem is many of the articles referencing his radio show and charity work were web based and no longer active links. Many of the articles citing his football career were back in the 1990's from the Calgary Herald, and they don't have a very sophisticated archive system. But I did get a hold of someone to help locate the articles, so I should have some better references there next week. There are a few other articles from USA Today from the same time period I have to locate, and I'll also contact the Essence editor to try and get the exact magazine reference (I know the docstoc article should be replaced with the real deal). So I will continue improving this and hopefully we'll be able to keep it online. Again, I appreciate the feedback. Taryndejesus (talk) 00:04, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

As an update, I am awaiting articles from the Calgary Herald. Unfortunately they could only provide them by mail, so it may take a week or more. I am still working on USA Today and Essence. Updates should be made within the next 2 weeks. Taryndejesus (talk) 01:59, 8 November 2010 (UTC) Just posting another update... still waiting on articles via snail mail. My have to delete some aspects of this article if I don't receive before too long. Will continue to monitor. Thank you.Taryndejesus (talk) 23:32, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:E-Ratinoff headshot 136.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Rafa Selase (disambiguation)

edit

A tag has been placed on Rafa Selase (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Animalparty! Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Damon J. Smith, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Vallejo (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi DannyS712, why do you believe this page should be deleted? I have worked on this page for many years, compiling over 50+ third party references. It is like my baby. With so many references, why do you believe it warrants deletion?

On deletion

edit

Hi Taryndejesus,

Let me first assure you that this account is not an alias. I marked the page for deletion for the reasons provided in the deletion discussion. Please understand that this is not a personal attack. I do not know who you are, nor the subject of the article and simply try to improve the quality of the articles on this website.

The reason that I have marked this for deletion is that I do not see how Damon J. Smith fulfils any of the criteria of notability for Wikipedia, and I will try and colour this for you. I was motivated to do so, because the article appears to be a promotional fluff-piece and spam.

In this article you reference Damon's "achievements" in multiple categories, (football, motocross, business, music) I see you have already removed reference to his music career, so I will go through each of the others.

Motocross: We look here, to justify notability: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(sports)#Motorsports Damon has only appeared in one professional Motocross competition called the "AMA Supercross Championship", but I see no evidence that he has competed in any race with significant prize money at stake.

Football: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(sports)#American_football/Arena_football/Canadian_football According to his wiki page, he never played in a professional football game.

Business, of which there is no specific notability page for, so we use the default notability test. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research#Primary,_secondary_and_tertiary_sources None of the citations provided are secondary sources.

You have my apologies if this is process is causing you some kind of distress or frustration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ludston (talkcontribs) 12:01, 31 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Damon J. Smith

edit

Hi, you sent me an email. There is no reason we can't have the discussion on wiki.

If you read the AFD the experienced editors voting felt the sources were not good enough and that the article was very promotional. Both are valid reasons for deletion. If you would like me to review please read WP:GNG and WP:NOTPROMO and let me know which two sources were the best and met the GNG the most. Thanks Spartaz Humbug! 07:36, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Humbug! Thanks for responding, I have no problem discussing the issue here on my talk page. If I had to only choose the 2 best sources, I would chose these two:
  • Essence (magazine): For 3 consecutive years Essence did an annual feature highlighting 50 black men for their career successes and philanthropic endeavors. In its first year, they highlighted men like Jamie Foxx, Tyler Perry, Reggie Bush, Tyrese Gibson, as well as Smith. Essence has a readership of 8.5 million and a rate based circulation of 1.6 million: http://photos.essence.com/galleries/do-right-men-2006#127189_4389

Also, if you read the AfD page, I did recognize that my original tone appeared rather fluffy - that wasn't intended to be promotional, but probably was my own personal excitement having met the man early on and (at that point being new to Wikipedia) also thinking that I had to be very thorough in detailing quotes from the source material. When I read the editors' critique I understood that it read more like an ad and I went back to tone that down. I think the end result was neutral in tone, but I am certainly open to more edits in that regard.

I'm not trying to exhaust anyone with this discussion, but for the sake of being thorough, and because I believe the BLP is worthy of inclusion based upon Wikipedia's first and most important guideline that the subject as a whole should "be worthy of notice" that is "remarkable" or "significant, interesting or unusual enough to deserve attention," I've included a list of the best sources that demonstrate his significance in each of the areas I'd sectioned out on his page.

Smith as a person of note: In addition to the 2 sources I referenced above, the Vallejo Times Herald also wrote a separate full page article about Smith's transition from football into all the various accomplishments outlined above: Vallejo Times Herald: "Ex-Gridder inspires through music, art, poetry" - entire article was written about Smith

Football References - Athough Smith clearly meets the football notability requirement of having "appeared in at least one regular season or post season game in any one of the following professional leagues" - some of these experienced editors discounted his playing with the Calgary Stampeders. However they failed to consider that he also meets Notability exception #2 due to his "notability arising from college football days"

Calgary Herald: "Life on taxi squad has share of ups-and-downs" Calgary Herald: "Secondary sees an end to its streak" Calgary Herald: "Questions abound after loss" Calgary Herald: "Stamps' Leonard is raring to go" Calgary Herald: "Rookie Reid hits some rough waters" For what it's worth, I also just found that his game jersey is being sold on some sort of sports paraphernalia site: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/damon-smith-cfl-game-used-jersey-1757365841

Smith is already on Wikipedia for Utah State Aggies football statistical leaders: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_State_Aggies_football_statistical_leaders#Interceptions He remains in the top 50 NCAA all time career leading interceptions with 17 interceptions: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/leaders/def-int-player-career.html Also #2 for the NCAA Big West Conference in all time career leading interceptions: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/big-west/leaders/def-int-player-career.html Additional Secondary Sources for Football Career: Fairfield Daily Republic: "No Time to Sit Around for Smith", "Smith Learns from Summer in Seattle" - each are separate articles written solely about Smith The Reporter (Vacaville): "Grid all-star maintaining a low profile" - entire article written about Smith Los Angeles Times: "Winless Utah State Ready for Titans" - highlights Smith's prominent collegiate football career Los Angeles Times: "Big West Roundup: Utah State Pulls Off Upset of Fresno State" - again highlights Smith's prominent collegiate football career And still available on Utah State's website a highlight of Smith's game saving 37-yard fumble return against Fresno State: https://utahstateaggies.com/news/2006/10/2/USU_To_Host_Fresno_State_In_Annual_Homecoming_Game_Saturday_At_6_05_p_m_.aspx

Motocross: I contained this information in its own section because of how it rounds out his story as a remarkable person. The editors again wanted to discount his participation in AMA Supercross, but again, he is notable enough simply for his ranking at the Lorretta Lynn's Championship, enough so that Motocross Action Magazine highlighted him twice in their magazine. He competed in the Loretta Lynn's Amateur Championship, placing 33rd in the nation in the 25+ class http://lorettas08.tracksideresults.com/class.asp?s=&e=1&c=13 Motocross Action Magazine: https://motocrossactionmag.com/motocross-actions-mid-week-report-012011/ Motocross Action Magazine: https://motocrossactionmag.com/a-night-a-day-looking-at-supercross-its-future/ Bolton Adventures interview with Damon: https://boltonadventures.com/2011/02/12/damon-smith-interview/ Additional references include results in the Lorretta Lynn's Pro Regional Races, which were outlined in the article for fact backed evidence. I can provide them if you want, but they are statistical, not secondary.

Music: All of these sources are editorial in nature, independent reviews of his musical work by reputable music sites (aside from Billboard, which is a link to his chart position): No Depression (magazine) reviewed one of his jazz piano compositions: https://www.nodepression.com/album-reviews/rafa-selases-beauty-of-the-warrior-is-majestic-and-cinematic Billboard charts He Charted at #8 on the Billboard New Age Chart for a improvisational piano album: https://www.billboard.com/music/rafa-selase All About Jazz Magazine reviewed his album Red Blooded American: https://www.allaboutjazz.com/red-blooded-american-rafa-selase-self-produced-review-by-jim-olin.php French Music blog reviewed another song on the Red Blooded American album: https://anotherwhiskyformisterbukowski.com/2018/07/13/la-pepite-du-jour-cest-rafa-selase-et-mama-you-never-told-me-pt-i-et-ii/?fbclid=IwAR32OFs9qAdWBoVqWjx_XaAk2cKUivpSB-2eOfvc3GBNFcUbUAa-5YwtlbM

your first source might be ok but a puffy half paragraph and picture is in no way GNG compliant. It's clearly not in depth. If your best two are not a gng pass, worse sources won't be either and I'm sorry but I'm not looking through the others if none are as good as the photopiece. Spartaz Humbug! 17:20, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi again Humbug! - My apologies, there is certainly more detailed coverage of Smith in other articles, but I provided the Essence link thinking that highlighting him in a national magazine among so many other notable figures would establish his credibility as a noteworthy subject for Wikipedia. Perhaps I misunderstood the part that says, "Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material," to mean the paragraph summarizing his philanthropy would suffice. If you don't mind taking one more quick look, these articles do provide more detailed coverage of Smith. I appreciate you taking the time to review and provide me with your feedback.

Please stop sending me emails. Spartaz Humbug! 20:45, 22 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Source 1 is littered with quotations as if it's a rehashed press release or an interview. I'm not sure therefore it's independent enough. Source 2 is not a reliable source. Source 3 is an interview and not therefore independent for the purposes of establishing notability. Spartaz Humbug! 20:53, 22 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
