Image parameters

Hi Tara, thanks for contributing to Australian Paralympic articles. However, when adding images, there's no need to put part of the image filename after the "thumb" parameter. For example, at the Ellie Cole article, you wrote <bnowiki>"[[[[File:120411 - Ellie Cole - 3b - 2012 Team processing.jpg|thumb|120411 - Ellie Cole - 3b - 2012 Team processing|right ...", but you could have just written "[[File:120411 - Ellie Cole - 3b - 2012 Team processing.jpg|thumb|right ...". If you have any further questions about images, I'm not actually the best person to ask, as I'm totally blind as it says on my user page; instead go to the help desk. I can answer questions about just about any other Wikipedia-related topic, however. :-) Graham87 15:11, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

And there's no need for the "thumb" parameter when adding an image to an infobox (i.e. the text at the top of Paralympic articles). Graham87 15:31, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi again Tara, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the image caption! This helps people find out basic details of an image (e.g. "portrait of <competitor's surname> in 2012" would be fine for the photos you've added,). Graham87 14:33, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Also, photos should be inside the section they belong to (so after the "==" tag), like I did at the Libby Kosmala article. Graham87 14:39, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi again Graham - thanks for the help! I was thinking about the captions. I'll expand the captions to read "2012 Australian Paralympic Team portrait of (athlete surname)". I will do that first. Thanks also for the section suggestion - I will go look for these too and update. I can see why I sometimes had them in a different place from under the section heading (I was trying to find a place to slot each photo that looked balanced as well as reasonably relevant, however it was harder when the articles were shorter!). ZOMG! How many more are there? :(

ZOMG! How many more Australian Paralympians and coaches needing articles about 2012 are there going to be? Last night, I was doing a mini dance with YAY! FIVE MORE! and then I woke up and ZOMG! seven more! Got one done and was like yay! SIX MORE! and now I see a coach so ZOMG! SEVEN AGAIN! :) Not that I mind, and very happy to see a very complete list but at the same time... Hey Laura :) Sorry I keep finding more people! Hopefully the list doesn't grow from now on (fingers crossed). Thank you for undertaking such a mammoth list of people and coaches. If it makes you feel better I also have a list for the APC to update bios on their own website ;) I've almost done as many 2012 Australian Paralympian photos as I can for now (but I've a page long list of athletes that I still need images to get from the APC so you will notice not all have a photo yet). --TaraMacphail (talk) 06:25, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm going into Sydney this Monday for the Olympic parade so not going to be updating that date. The challenge was making sure they all passed notability under NSPORTS, the Olympic/Paralympic category or WP:GNG. I am reasonably confident I found the coverage that they should all qualify. The writing is awful but people can always fix that later. :) It will be really, really helpful when it comes time for writing Wikinews articles because some background there and pictures. :D --LauraHale (talk) 23:08, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Classification articles

I've started moving some of them to the main name space. They aren't particularly pretty and my writing is poor... but mostly cited. I wanted them moved over before the start of the Paralympics and me leaving for London in 2 days. The articles should all be linked to eachother on the bottom on the main space. I moved the non-2012 Summer Paralympics Australia didn't have competitors in them first. Not fantastic but there is time to work on those. Some one from curling contacted me about that article so will end up trying to follow up on them. I am not entirely happy with most of the, but they have information, look distinct from the articles about the sport, are reasonably well sourced and have some good information. (Which just re-inforces the need for a tree structure in my opinion because it looks like the articles could be really long once you started adding full histories, information about classification, etc. ) --LauraHale (talk) 20:24, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes I agree, some of them could get very, very long... do you want me to remove everything but general info out of the Sports/Classes section and just have links to the individual class articles (like S14 etc)? Hmmm. Also I was thinking it would be good to add an infobox at the top of each article with heading=(name of sport), impairment type=(physical, visual etc) and governing body=(IPC etc)? Greg Smith

I've moved the text you wrote at Greg Smith's article to Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Devoting an entire section of Greg Smith's article to the announcement about him becoming the flag bearer is a bit too recentist for my taste, and I think the information is far more suitable at the article about Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. However I have fairly strong (and some might say extreme) opinions on how Wikipedia should cover recent events in proportion to older ones, so keep that in mind. Graham87 14:54, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Good morning Graham. Thanks for letting me know. I've had a look at the two articles. I'm happy! I was mainly concerned with getting the two images from the ceremony into Smith's article along with a snippet of info about it, and it still does the job with your rearrangement. Dashes

Great work on cleaning up the Paralympic medal tables! However, just one minor thing: at Kieran Modra, you changed "B&VI 1–3" to "B&VI 1-3". I've undid that hyphen change, because in Wikipedia, we use an en dash rather than a hyphen to denote ranges of numbers like "1 to 3"; see the section in the Manual of Style about that topic, which also talks about other uses of dashes. Thanks for the tip Graham! I must've done that when changing the event from "Kilo" to "1 km". Hopefully I haven't done the same elsewhere.... It's great that you're fixing the hyphens now as well! You might find this script useful to automatically fix hyphens in articles, but it doesn't automatically fix all Paralympic classifications. Graham87 15:24, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Re: your edit to John Eden (athlete), the event he won his 1988 medal just contained A2 and A9 competitors, so a dash isn't appropriate there; therefore I've removed it. See the IPC database. I have no idea what the deal is with the dashes at the ends of some of the classifications at that link; it's probably best to remove them, as you've done. Graham87 04:26, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Image captions

Hi Tara, thanks for adding images from the 2000 Paralympics! Just one minor thing about the captions: Wikipedia prefers to use the term "Paralympics" rather than "Paralympic Games" (contrary to the APC and IPC's usage), so I've changed all instances of "Paralympic Games" to "Paralympics" in the captions you added today. I hate to be a pain in the neck, but Wikipedia uses non-breaking spaces rather than regular ones when writing measurements. So instead of writing 1 km, we write 1&nbsp;km (what you see when reading this post, not how it looks in the edit window). I've tweaked your recent image additions accordingly. Just wanted to add. I'm using the term "Paralympics" for captions (as per your advice) when adding photos to articles on Wikipedia, however I am still using "Paralympic Games" in the image descriptions for photos uploaded to Wikimedia because they belong to the APC image library. Gliders pix

We have nice mug shots of all the Gliders except Amber Merritt and Sarah Vinci, but for ny article on the Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, it would be nice to have matching shots. Do they exist? Hawkeye7 (talk) 18:57, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Hawkeye7! Thanks for your question. I will have to get back to you on that one. The nice mugshots of the athletes were all done as a set of professional portraits of the 2012 Australian Paralympic Team. My guess is that Merritt and Vinci somehow missed out on their portrait because theirs were never with the other 100+ athletes. I will ask Tony however he is very busy at the moment, and I will be going to NLS6 in Brisbane (8-12 Feb), so it may be a little while before I get back to you.
