Because it was showing up as the actual image when I didn't nowiki it. Sorry for the trouble. S. Dean Jameson 23:54, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
an FYI, (sorry, I'm snooping), if you want to add a link to an image instead of just an image, you only need one more colon. If you type [[:Image:THADDDDDDDDDDDDD.jpg]], noting the colon before the word "Image", you'll get Image:THADDDDDDDDDDDDD.jpg instead of the actuall picture. Same idea for categories, just add a colon before the word category to add a link to a category instead of actually adding the page to the category. Cheers! Economists for Peace and Security

Hi there. I've read your tips on why my article was deleted, but I still don't really understand why it's been deleated. I created it because it was on the articles most wanted page, and the last version only seemed to have been deleted because of copyvio issue. I didn't violate any copyright when I wrote the article, - am I totally missing the point, or are other forces at work? Thanks, Danpatterson89 (talk) 10:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

It was still a copyright violation of their website. You changed a couple words - "we" to "they", for example - but it was still essentially a cut-and-paste-job. Tan | 39 13:21, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Election box total no change

Hi. Just a friendly reminder that when going through CAT:CSD, you should check Special:WhatLinksHere, particularly for templates. If a template is used in an article, it shouldn't be deleted, for obvious reasons. In addition to the obvious, deleting an in-use template leaves every page that once transcluded that template in CAT:CSD, so if there is a good reason to delete it and red linked transclusions don't matter (ie, a user box being deleted under T1), it's a good idea to make an edit to remove the deletion template first. That will remove all of the pages that transclude the template from CAT:CSD and you can delete it. --B (talk) 05:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Whoops; notice I stayed away from all those other California election CSDs. I looked at that one and meant to move on to the next; must have made a mistake. Thanks a ton for mopping up behind me - I clearly need to be more careful! Tan | 39 05:09, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Monte Negro (band)

hi,

I'm wondering why the page for Monte Negro (band) was deleted. I looked up article A7, and in the page I clearly give reasons why the band Monte Negro is significant; "they are bilingual" "released 5 EPs".... this isn't a garage band, they have many fans in many countries throughout the Americas. Would you like me to say when they are on TV? I'm confused about what is "significant" to you. Also, where is all the text I wrote for the page, did you delete all of it? Will I have to create a whole new page?

-brett —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brettcopell (talkcontribs) 16:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

The fact that they are bilingual and released 5 EPs does not make this a notable band. If you can clearly tell me how this band meets the requirements of WP:BAND, I will reconsider. Yes, it's all deleted. I can provide it to you if you wish, but if you create another article without showing how this band is notable, it will be deleted again immediately. Tan | 39 16:12, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Fusebox Funk

Hello. I wrote a article about the band Fusebox Funk. I included several links to significant media coverage of the band and reviews/articles done about the band. You deleted the article because (A7) notability. There was significant and reliable sources to prove otherwise, that the band is notable. Please help me make the article relevant and keep it from getting deleted.

Thanks!

Regarding: Deletion of Icon Systems, Inc. Article

Dear Tanthalas39:
Could you please review my Article about Icon Systems, Inc? I was planning on adding more information to my article with sources, but it was deleted within 10 minutes. Icon Systems has made one of the most notable contribution to Church Management software industry. With Icon Systems was one of the first company to develop "Windows based" Church Software back in 1993 when DOS based church software was highly used by others. In the review from Christian Computing magazine, October 1994, Vol 6 No. 10,Pg.18 "Revelations Church software received" more perfect 10 than any other software package." Icon Systems was also one the first company to develop Web-based Management software. This company has made a very notable contribution to the church software industry.
Could you please re-consider my request so that I can add more information?

Thank you,

(Sdshrest (talk) 20:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC))

The company in question did not even come close, as the article was written, to meeting the notability requirements set forth in WP:CORP. If you can show me how this company meets those requirements, I will reconsider. Tan | 39 20:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Inkhead

Hi,

My article "InkHead" was marked for speedy deletion under "blatantly advertising". I edited the article and took out the paragraphs which I believe were advertising nature. Then I received a message from you (Doesn't indicate importance or significance of a group/company/etc.) I'm wondering if you could help me to find the existing suitable category for InkHead. It should fall under "Promotional Products", "Corporate Gifts" online distributor company. Do I need to create a new category? If so, how do I do this? Or is there a more suitable category that they would fall under. InkHead is an important company in the Promotional Product industry. They are slated to be in the Inc. 5000 this year. I believe that InkHead marketing information is very useful for corporate, businesses and universities when it comes to brand building or corporate or school spirit building. If you would kindly show me to get the article listed, I would greatly appreciate.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Page

Can you review my version and Yaf's version and make an edit? I have been trying to briefly summarize CSGV's positions (not whether they are right or wrong) and I feel as if Yaf is injecting his own opinion about the political debate revolving around each of the organizations goal. In my opinion the brief summaries that I have offered are sterile and is the easiest way to do it, but I would defer to you what you think is best. 216.15.42.55 (talk) 20:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to the wacky world of MascotGuy.

Sorry I wasn't more clear about that user over on AIV, but this guy is utterly bizarre. I was fortunate enough a few years ago to actually contact his mom since one of his socks was his mom's e-mail address. What he is is an autistic teenager in San Diego, California editing on a dynamic Road Runner Cable IP. In nearly five years of this cat-and-mouse game, he's amassed something like 800 sockpuppets. Take a look at Wikipedia:Long term abuse/MascotGuy to get a better idea of why this kid has earned his own long term abuse page. Thanks.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 21:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, yo. I'll familiarize myself so that I don't require hand-holding next time :-) Tan | 39 21:51, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

No prob. He's just been doing this nonsense for so long that I thought everyone was familiar with him by now. It has gotten to the point where I'd actually suggested on the AN that he be allowed to edit, albeit under strictly controlled conditions. Not the most popular idea I've ever run up the flagpole. At least he's very predictible in his naming conventions, so when he does create a sock, it jumps off of the page. Sorry about my assumption back on the AIV. Thanks for the help! --PMDrive1061 (talk) 21:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm back

I know you all were worried. I was on vacation. Here's what I did: Moab, Utah. Hiked Arches National Park. Hiked Hanging Lake. Hiked 2,000 vertical feet and snowboarded same at Breckenridge Ski Resort on July 4th. Rafted the Blue River, which had Class 3 rapids. Lots of this. Fourteen hour drive home from Dillon, CO to Phoenix, AZ today. Exhausted!

This is seriously weird. I'm on a trip and doing some of the same things. Did Arches and Bryce today. Hell of a lot of driving. Grand Canyon tomorrow. In AZ now. Air conditioning sucks in this room. I was in Colorado Springs, Green River, Utah, Denver, Bryce, Arches. Never in Moab, but Arches is very close to it. Enigma from an IP, 10 July 2008
Crazy dude! Arches is like two miles from Moab, hard to believe you went there (apparently from the north) and never ventured into Moab. Not that there's much to see there. Tan | 39 04:01, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Heh, Moab is the only "city" around there. There was no time to waste because I wanted to get to Bryce as well. Was staying in Green River, and Arches was SE from there I believe. Left the hotel at 7:15 AM, went to Arches, was there for like an hour, circled back towards Green River and then began the long trek down to Bryce. Would've liked to have more time for Bryce and Arches, but I'm going to be all day at the Grand Canyon tomorrow, so I needed to get to the hotel near Grand Canyon tonight. This is my fourth "hotel"/dump in four nights. Enigma from an IP, 10 July 2008
Ha, nice. And here I am at a Hilton in Houston. You gonna be in Phoenix at all? Tan | 39 04:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
I wish. I'm missing out on Phoenix and Vegas this time because I have a lot of other things planned. Ton of stuff in California. Went through Flagstaff, though, and wasn't far from Phoenix at one point. In Flagstaff, some bar was doing 10 cent beer night. Can't believe they still do those things. It's been tried in baseball, and one of the times it ended in catastrophe. Enigma from an IP, 10 July 2008

Please do not mistake bluntness for insult. My intent was to be very straightforward, not insulting. I don't beat around the bush when I believe someone should know better. (Regardless, I have refactored my comments and the header to correct the perceived insult.) Please reconsider your approach and attitude. Behavior like the diff above and your reply will earn editors warnings and blocks on a normal basis. As an administrator, a higher standard is generally expected of you. If you're feeling heated, it may be best to take a break from the wiki and come back when you're feeling a bit better. Vassyana (talk) 04:06, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
The diff you have posted above was not nearly as insulting as your interaction here. "Section deleted in 3... 2... 1..." after he already deleted my very appropriate and civil warning - earned this bullshit from you? Are you kidding me that you think this will earn me a "warning and block"? Go do something useful, Vassyana. And thanks for the recommendation to take a break, I think I'll completely ignore it. Tan | 39 04:34, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, people are blocked for actions like that. If you persist down this path, you can be assured that some administrator will add an entry to your block log. Many sysops will not be nearly as tolerant or patient of such behavior nor of such replies. Please reconsider your approach. Vassyana (talk) 05:00, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

The pretentiousness and bureaucracy on this site is amazing - people are so focused on the rules and regulations that they lose sight of the project. What did Vassyana think he was accomplishing there? Did he really expect me to cower in the corner to his firm "No"? Well, if you think there's sockpuppeting and such going on, perhaps take it to ANI in the meantime? If there's a resolution and a corresponding block, then of course it could be unprotected early. As it was, there was an obvious ongoing edit war that needed to be stopped one way or the other; I'm sure you understand that. Tan | 39 19:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Of course! =) Here's the SP case, if you'd like some entertaining reading Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Davesmith33. The most recent sock has now been blocked, thankfully. Would just be nice to have his vandalism out of the article while it's locked. Dp76764 (talk) 19:27, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
I just wanted to add that User:Mystic meg is bleeding love (who did the last edit), doesn't use huggle, he is only writing it in his edit summary, maybe to give the impression that he is an established editor. Speedy deletion of NRW.INVEST

Dear Tan,

unfortunately you've just "speed deleted" my article on NRW.INVEST, which is the Economic Development Agency of the German State North-Rhine Westfalia. And unfortunately I'm not too good in composing Haikus, therefore I'll try my best in "prose" to convince you of "undeleting" the NRW.INVEST article.

Like similar institutions, i.e. "Invest in America" or "Invest in Northern Ireland", which are respectively listed on Wikipedia, NRW.INVEST is a noncommercial service organisation. It is owned by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Like "Invest in America" it promotes its country as business location.

As a governmental institution NRW.INVEST has been practising its work for more than 30 years. NRW is a very popular investment location for foreign investments in Germany and setting up a business in a foreign country is usually a rather complex matter. Thus it is certainly beneficial to know where to turn to for information and services and help in all practical matters.

Is there anything we can do about the deletion? Would it help to include some more references on FDI in NRW? Or should there be more practical examples of NRW.INVEST's work? I've compared them to the other "Invest in..." articles on Wikipedia and found they were rather less informative than what I've written on NRW.INVEST.

I'm looking forward hearing from you.

Kind regards, Christabel Christabel Neboht (talk) 15:35, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Christabel, sorry I took awhile to get back to you here. First of all, read WP:WAX - other articles on Wikipedia do not concern me. However, if you can show me how this article meets the notability standards of WP:ORG, I will reconsider. Tan | 39 19:07, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tan, Thank you for your response. RE: WP:WAX, I didn't mean to sound bitchy or something. RE: WP:ORG, thanks a lot. How do I proceed. I include the references in the article and put it back up? Or do I send you a list??? I guess first makes more sense?! Thank you for your time, Christabel Neboht (talk) 19:24, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Just post a few of the references here that establish the notability requirements of WP:ORG. I will evaluate them and let you know if they are sufficient enough to warrant inclusion on Wikipedia - if they are even borderline, I will err on the side of inclusion. Tan | 39 03:53, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Our Reel Big Fish Tribute Band Is Better Than Your Reel Big Fish Tribute Band

This band fits notability criteria for musicians and ensembles #7 They are the most prominent representative of tributes to the notable band, Reel Big Fish as demonstrated locally by their numerous, performances in the New England area, including their June 24th appearance with Cas Haley of America's Got Talent & as demonstrated globally by their sheer web presence. (appear above all other Reel Big Fish Tribute bands in Google results for "Reel Big Fish Tribute" etc.) (more combine plays than any other tribute to Reel Big Fish on YouTube.)

Kip's Bay

I posted this before but I guess you must have missed it. Do you think George Washington should go under commanders at the Landing at Kip's Bay? I know he was involved in the battle but I thought it would be better to ask you before taking action. Red4tribe (talk) 16:02, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, it's a good question that I debated before (with myself). Considering that he wasn't present at the actual battle scene and didn't have much affect on the outcome (i.e., he didn't manage to stop the fleeing troops), I think that listing the actual "on-the-scene" commander is better. However, if you have a source that actually states that Washington was the commander at this battle, of course we should defer to that. Tan | 39 17:34, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
This is quoted from the book How America Fought Its Wars, pg 157.

"An analysis of the major battles in which Washington held field command in reveals 5 fairly definitie British victories-Long Island, Kip's Bay, Fort Washington, Brandywine and Germantown" Red4tribe (talk) 18:21, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Pipe character in your sig + block template = odd results

I just saw your block on User talk:Pink Evolution, which I agree with completely. However, it looks like something odd is going on with your signature: the link to your user page is showing up, but the link to the talk page is not showing up, nor is the time stamp. I think the pipe character in your signature is throwing off the template; have you tried {{Pipe}} instead? —C.Fred (talk) 18:45, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I've noticed that on all by block notices, actually! I'm using Twinkle to automate them, and I haven't figured out how to fix it. Maybe just... not using Twinkle ;-) Tan | 39 18:47, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Stale vandalism

Hi, you declined to block an ip vandal because the vandal hadn't edited in ten days. What is the normal criterion for considering the vandalism to be "fresh" instead of stale?--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 03:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

For IPs, I'd say within about half an hour. 10 days is way too long. –xenocidic (talk) 03:03, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Your signature

Hi Tanthalas39! Your signature contains a pipeline character, which is a problem when you put it into a template, like you did here. You might want to replace the | with |. Cheers, Face 16:57, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Already fixed, thanks. Tan ǀ 39 17:00, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

quick question

hi there, i just asked for page protection which you declined, but the article that its to do with i wanted some advice.the dispute thats happening is to do with an album article and as the songs all have different writing credits i edited that into a table to follow other articles with the same content. The dispute is over the table and as you suggested i have talked to the user however, he is just being aggressive and threatening to 'report me'. All i want to know is - am i in the wrong with this because i just genuinely edit pages and make good contributions. thanks DrMotley (talk) 18:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I've seen you around and I know you're a good editor. The problem is that I think (personally) that it's a bad idea to protect the page because of a rather petty dispute. Usually, full protection of an article is done because of a long-term edit dispute over content (usually POV stuff). Here, if you can determine which policy he/she is breaking - WP:NPA, WP:3RR, etc - then I would advise you to take it to WP:ANI. If you can't really nail down a policy violation, as sometimes is the case, then I advise you to do one of two things - either be patient and try again tomorrow (I mean, is it really a huge deal to have this resolved NOW?), or take it to a dispute resolution forum such as WP:3O or WP:DR. I'd try the patience strategy first; I've "won" many disputes this way with minimal stress. Tan ǀ 39 18:43, 14July 2008 (UTC)

thanks for your help with this I'm going to try the patience way for now, just got a little annoying thanks for the help DrMotley (talk) 22:05, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

My reasoning

Re: your comment, it didn't seem the IP was in need of another warning. The contributions made it clear that it was the same person the whole time - in such cases, the earlier warnings and block count against the present so I block very quickly. Going warn1-warn2-warn3-block more than once is only if you're not sure it's the same person. That's my thought process anyway. —Wknight94 (talk) 19:21, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, no worries. I probably shouldn't have even commented, but I had just wrote out a long reasoning and then edit conflicted. Carry on, my good man. Tan ǀ 39 19:22, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

My Block 24 hours

Hi Tanthalas39,
yesterday you blocked me for 24 hours because I called User:Thankyoubaby an Idiot.
I think it is useful to accent discreety a nr.1-position to remark in this charts the single was on top. This procedure does not overrate the chart and is not POV. To come and say somewhere is standing that blablabla is silly if you know WP:IAR. Thnx, Pink Evolution (talk) 19:39, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Do any of my admin pagestalkers want to take a look at this one? Am I just proving a point here, or is yet another block warranted from this? Is he cutting off his nose to spite his face here? Tan ǀ 39 19:43, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Don't miss this PA/last warning removal from his talk page, either. Tan ǀ 39 19:44, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
I'd probably just let him/her blow off the steam since he's directing a comment to you and not the other person, but if he makes a direct personal attack again, then another block would be warranted. –xenocidic (talk) 19:47, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Agree with Xeno. Pink E, note that three admins are now looking at your contribs. Whether another editor is, in fact, an idiot, or not, is completely not up to you to decide, and it most certainly isn't your prerogative or right to call someone else that or anything else negative on Wikipedia. BioRegional

Hello, you protected the page BioRegional due to copyright violation (of content from our web site that we have the right to stick up and re-release under the GFDL) and then for repeated recreation. I have now created a page in my userspace (User:Tomchance/BioRegional) to demonstrate that I am serious about creating an appropriate page for this notable British charity. Could you please unprotect the page so I can edit it? Many thanks. Tomchance (talk) 14:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tomchance. It appears that the article is really still just a promotional piece, so chances are it would be deleted right away again. There are also sourcing problems - you have no significant, third-party references in your article. If you can read WP:ORG, and let me know how this organization meets that guideline's notability requirements, I'll consider unprotecting the article.
Hi Tanthalas, I've added in more history and links. I would hope that some of that media coverage, plus the long list of awards and the sub-section on the BedZED page of awards (one of our projects) would be enough to establish our notability. Tomchance (talk) 14:35, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Jonas and Plunkett page

Hello Tanthalas39,

The Jonas and Plunkett page was deleted because the songwriting pair are not notable (or, at least, were not notable according to the article I wrote).

Thank you for taking the time to review the article. I am disappointed with the outcome, but I appreciate your work.

I hope you don't mind me taking the time to remind you of why I believe the article to be notable:

1.) The songwriting team Jonas and Plunkett released a charity single last year for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. The song was endorsed by the charity. The hospital is the largest stand-alone children's hospital in Europe - it's HUGE! Some amazing work goes on there. Plunkett (Adrian Plunkett) - one half of the songwriting team - worked there for 2 years - training as a paediatrician in intensive care. The songwriting team, and their charity single - "Spaceship" was featured as a "Sunday Spotlight" on BBC Radio 2 (the largest network radio station in the UK!).

2.) Their album "This is who we are" was produced by Mike Hurst (who also happens to be father to Jonas Hurst - the other half of Jonas and Plunkett). Mike Hurst produced countless hits in the 70s and 80s. He was also the guitarist in The Springfields (of Dusty Springfield fame). He has had several number one hits. He is, clearly, notable in his own right - and there is a wikipedia page about him.

3.) Jonas and Plunkett have been finalists for the last 3 years (2005-7) in the UK Songwriting Contest. The 2007 entry was the charity single Spaceship.

4.) Jonas and Plunkett have recently (July 2008) signed a publishing deal with Respect Music, who's roster includes Levi Weaver, Paleday, Dufus, and many more.

5. Jonas Hurst (one half of the band) is arguably notable in his own right (and I am thinking of writing an article about him). He is a presenter on Sky News, and has also worked on RI:SE (Channel 4) and Breakfast on 5 (Five (channel)). As a child, he was a member of the Minipops and has several solo records. He also won a competition called Starseach in the US, and was runner up in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. He is also son of Mike Hurst (as mentioned above).

Apologies for the lengthy appeal, but i wanted to get it all down. I was going to try to put this in a haiku, but struggled with the syllables!

Many thanks,

tony.

Tonytheviking (talk) 06:59, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Tony, thanks for your reasonable message. I have a few rebuttal points, and then a question. Please be aware that I have no interest in this group; this also means I have no invested interest in keeping it off Wikipedia. I am merely enforcing existing policy.
1) The size of the hospital is irrelevent. Releasing a charity single does not make the band notable. Having it played on the radio comes close to establishing notability, but according to the specific guidelines of WP:MUSIC, the song would have to have been placed in rotation on a major radio network.
2) Being produced by a notable person does not inherently make the band notable. I once jammed with Jason Newsted of Metallica; I am not notable in the music world.
3) Being a finalist in a songwriting competition does not confer notability.
4) Signing a publishing deal does not confer notability. Note that WP:MUSIC's notability guideline related to this requires the release of two albums on a major label.
5) Hurst might be notable; I would need more information. But, again, this does not necessarily confer notability to this group.
The bottom line is that none of your arguments make a specific case for how this duo meets the any of the 12 notability guidelines (of which they only need to meet one) set forth in WP:MUSIC. I would read these guidelines carefully if I were you, and if you can show me how they meet one of the guidelines, I will of course reconsider. Tan ǀ 39 13:54, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

An open note to Ecoleetage

Since any time I edit your talk page, you instantly remove it with the edit summary like "cleaning page", I'd like to publicly tell you to step the hell off my back. You've been editing in my footsteps for months now, and I'm getting really damn tired of it. Tan ǀ 39 21:22, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Please try to be a bit more civil; Ecoleetage is a user who has done a lot for Wikipedia. Let's try to assume good faith here. - Diligent Terrier (and friends) 21:24, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Now that I look at your comment, you're assuming that Ecoleetage is stalking you. I've seen him around at many AfDs, and it's possible that he does new page patrol. Both of you are active in those areas, so I wouldn't be surprised if you cross paths at times. - Diligent Terrier (and friends) 21:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Ecoleetage also has every right to remove a comment on his own talk page. If you have a problem with him, a civil note may go over a little better. He is a very established user who has accomplished a lot during his time here. He's not the kind we want to scare away. These kinds of messages are not what I like to see out of an admin, and I'm starting to regret my RfA support of you. - Diligent Terrier (and friends) 21:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Civil notes don't seem to work, either, DT. I think this problem is at least a little bit more than you realize. Tan ǀ 39 21:45, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
DT, do you have any idea what yer talking about? You give a "warning" without any research into this situation. I know he's a good editor, I know he's done a lot for Wikipedia, but this editor has a vendetta against me and I'm tired of it. I have every right to post something like this on my talk page. Tan ǀ 39 21:28, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
I never "warned" you. How do you know that he has a problem with you? - Diligent Terrier (and friends) 21:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Sigh. For months he's been editing in my footsteps - not just speedy deletion stuff but everywhere. Small things that aren't counterproductive but enough to annoy the hell out of me. I let it go a lot, but he just created Staten Island Peace Conference, which was on my user page to-do list for months. It's a natural progression of Landing at Kip's Bay, of which I authored 95%. Coincidence that Eco just happened to have the idea of creating this article? I don't have a problem with it on its own, but it would have been common courtesy to at least mention that he was working on it, instead of just me seeing a bluelink one day. It's unnerving, annoying and extremely frustrating. Tan ǀ 39 21:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

An open response to the open letter

In regard to your article Arizona State Parks (government), (which, I believe, is the only article that you’ve created to date):

1. The Arizona States Parks system was created in 1955, which is not stated in your article (you only cite the creation of the ASP board in 1957). Please check [4], which cites information from the book “Gateways to the Southwest: The Story of Arizona State Parks.” This also cites the early history of the ASP agency, which your article lacks.

2. Your article could also use the link to the nonprofit Arizona State Parks Foundation [5], which has been rallying political and financial influence to save the ASP system from budget cuts.

3. The article is lacking in regard to WP:RS. You can accommodate that via these links: [6] and [7].

4. The Finances section has several errors that require copy editing. Written properly, it should look like this: “The agency operates with 14 categorized funds, and in fiscal year 2007 had expenditures of $41 million, revenues of $74 million, and a cash asset balance of $199 million(all figures approximate).” It might actually help to update the section, considering the system is operating on the fiscal year 2008 calendar.

I have my own connection and interest regarding Arizona – my ancestors were among the conquistadors who vanquished the southwest.

I would have made the changes myself, which is my right as a Wikipedia editor. But in view of the obnoxious and chronologically inaccurate comments above, I will yield this information to you and allow you to expand the article. Ecoleetage (talk) 12:09, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I agree with most of the above. I've been sort of struggling with the whole notability concept of the board, too - i.e., is it actually even worth having the article? And yes, as you said, it's lacking in a lot of ways. The reason I haven't expanded it is because I might delete it ;-)
Listen, for what it's worth, I'm sorry I overreacted. You did an excellent job with the article, and you do a great job in general. I don't concede all points - I think that you do edit in my footsteps, and it would have been nice to at least be consulted for the Staten Island Peace Conference. However, I'm somewhat ashamed for lashing out, and I'm going to try to let this be a learning experience for myself. Tan ǀ 39 14:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
If I occasionally "edit in your footsteps," it is only because I enjoy your contributions. I tend to keep track of several people who offer interesting input to the project.
I would appreciate if you took the "wikistalker" comment off your User Page, because it is not correct and it may give people the wrong impression.
And if it is okay with you, I have some data available on Col. William Douglas -- do you want it or should I proceed with all reckless abandon? Ecoleetage (talk) 14:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
You don't need to ask permission. I've apologized; stop making me feel worse than I already do :-) Tan ǀ 39 14:27, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

o Wow, that's awesome. How did that happen? PS: Did you see Keeper checking on you on his talk? TCariMy travels 14:16, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Sort of random; I lived in San Diego for about five years after college, and I was up in LA visiting my friend Davi and happened to take my guitar and amp. He knew someone who knew someone who had a basement where I met Newsted. Ghetto and fun. Tan ǀ 39 14:22, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
When was I "checking on Tan" on my talk? I see a post where someone else said "where's tan been", weren't me. Newsted rocks. Constructive criticism on the Nantucket talk page

I admit the title of my edit was a bit over-the-top, but the substance of the edit was actually somewhat constructive. I have been working under the impression that personal opinions, no matter how profane, can be placed on talk pages in order to fashion a dialogue amongst users and non-users alike. And with a title like Nantucket Sucks!, I was sure to garner a response, just not the type of response that I had anticipated from an administrator. I apologize for any inconvenience that I may have caused. FitzColinGerald (talk) 14:35, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I just don't see how this edit could generate a constructive conversation to improve the article. What was it you wanted to do; add a fully referenced and neutral section on how Nantucket is a shitty place to live? Anyway, it's not a big deal, just a bit inappropriate. Tan ǀ 39 14:39, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I actually had the Twinkle RPP form open when I saw you undo it differently. The reason I reverted was because he "handled" the request himself, so, from what I can see, he is not seriously asking for someone to review his block. I think he's just trying to make a point, but I guess it really doesn't matter, especially after the edits that got him his level four warning and his block. I have been addressing vandalism and BLP issues; neither of which are subject to 3RR. You F451, on the other hand, have chosen to align yourself with those seeking to consistently violate BLP on this article. (Not to mention baiting me to what you think is a violation.) --Justallofthem (talk) 22:58, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Heya Tanthalas39!

I was just over on this user page, and noted that you just blocked them for a week, but that same IP just re-edited the talk page to remove the blocks and warnings, and replace it with their anti-Danish soap box. Study Guides and Strategies speedy deletion

Greetings

I just noticed that you affirmed the speedy deletion of Study Guides and Strategies www.studygs.net. It originally was deleted by CobaltBlueTony™. I was not notified that you upheld the deletion or why, so I am following up with questions: did you have access to why I believed it was deleted incorrectly by CobaltBlueTony™ In other words, did you review the conversation where he asked for three peer-reviewed commentaries on the resources as he requested, which I then supplied? It seems that there are commercial websites that are featured that are much the inferior to this public service website (IMHO) yet wikipedia promtes them rather than one such as mine. This phrase - "eventually received national air-play on the ABC Radio Network". If it's true, it might meet the notability requirements of WP:BAND. Just erring on the side of caution. Tan ǀ 39 01:17, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, yes, that's good enough, you made the right call. I initially dismissed it since his webpage at http://dougcowen.com/low_profile.html mentioned the local fame, but not the national "airplay" (whatever that's supposed to mean) — although now I see that his site mentions it on http://www.dougcowen.com/BIOGRAPHY.html. I'll add it right away; it's not reliable, but better than nothing for the AfD.

Extra-speedy deletion

I don't know if this is following generally accepted practice, but I just wanted to say, "Thanks for quickly following up with that deletion request for that savings and loan crisis move"; I've been having a bit of a time dealing with a stubborn someone else in a different (much less significant) issue, so it was good to see something work as smoothly as that did. ~Wikimancer X *\( ' ' ^) 02:05, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I was wondering what exactly prompted a warning that you placed on my talk page? Thanks. Nicholasm79 (talk) 16:40, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Check the history; some IP cut-and-pasted that warning there with my signature. I'll address the issue with the IP. Tan ǀ 39 16:42, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Note: I already blocked the IP. Tan ǀ 39 16:42, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Thanks for your attention. Have a good one... Nicholasm79 (talk) 16:45, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

I have given my reasons on the editors talkpage, though I should have said somewhere that I did not even consider that you made the block for anything other than the good faith belief you were doing the right thing. Instead, I shall say it here - and also comment that had you not declared at WP:AN that you were unopposed to the block being lifted that I would have not have done so, and that your cool and considered responses were one of the reasons the debate did not get more heated than it did. Again, thank you. LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:30, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

SHOCKED

I am shocked by your indef block of Boy2Boy, and invite you to unblock and treat as a "time-served" for the two problematic edits. He was not actively editing at the time, and had been the subject of a hugely offensive attack on his faith and his sexuality by another editor. DuncanHill (talk) 10:40, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

I decline your invitation. The block had nothing to do with this user's sexuality. He is free to make use of the unblock request template, with which if he makes a well-reasoned argument, I'm sure the block would be lifted fairly quickly. As it is, I think that a massive to-do is being made about this for little reason. Tan ǀ 39 15:32, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
He made two problematic edits. His legitimate additions to article talk pages were wrongly blanked by the editor who reported him, and who attacked both his faith and his sexuality. No effort was made by you or anyone else to constructively engage him about his problematic edits. I am sorry that you think an indefinite block was appropriate, just as I am sorry that you have taken no action against PMDrive for his attacks, which in my opinion are far more harmful and disruptive than Boy2Boy's behaviour. You have done much to create the "massive to do" with a block that is downright wrong. DuncanHill (talk) 15:37, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, this is obviously already being discussed on WP:AN, so I don't see any reason to have a separate discussion here. I already told any other admin that they were free to reverse my block, and I seem to have the endorsement of at least two other admins. If you have an issue, I suggest you argue further at the appropriate AN thread, to maintain transparency and a cohesive discussion. Tan ǀ 39 15:39, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
At least two admins have also requested that you unblock, as well as a number of proles. DuncanHill (talk) 15:53, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
And again, any admin is free to overturn it. Please stop discussing this here. Tan ǀ 39 15:54, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Could you then at least make that clear in the thread, as your wording as it stands does not make that clear. DuncanHill (talk) 15:55, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I complied with this request, and you take the opportunity to accuse me of attacking someone's sexuality again. Make another accusation like that, and I'll start considering them personal attacks. Tan ǀ 39 16:18, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I do not believe that I have accused you of homophobia - please re-read carefully my posts. If I have mistakenly made such an accusation against you then please provide me with the diff, and I will blank it. I have explicitly accused PMDrive of homophobia, and of being motivated by that homophobia in his treatment of Boy2Boy. You I just think made a bad block. DuncanHill (talk) 16:22, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
"I too sometimes wonder whether a community where attacks on an editor's sexuality and religion are so widely endorsed by admins is worth bothering with." This pretty clearly states that you believe I am endorsing attacks on an editor's sexuality and religion. Tan ǀ 39 16:24, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I have edited that comment slightly, so that it does not refere specifically to admins. Any others? you did say "again". DuncanHill (talk) 16:35, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Why don't you guys back off now? The block was lifted already, if it was a misunderstood mistake then that is acceptable. Tan is a good person, I don't see why you need to come at him from all corners on the same issue or subliminal accusations of other editors. Yesh! --Eric (mailbox) 23:43, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of Geoffrey (producer)

Hey Tan, I was just in the middle of doing some cleaning of this article when you deleted it. Would you mind restoring it? The guy seems to be pretty notable, lots of Google hits and such, and the article mentions a few MTV production credits. To be honest, I don't think it should have been tagged or deleted at all. Done. Renaming article might be step 1, I guess. Tan ǀ 39 17:18, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tanthalas39, thanks for fixing the unblock decline - it was originally an unblock-ip request, and I didn't rearrange the sections correctly. Slow Wiki

Anyone else been frustrated with how slow Wikipedia is lately? Tan ǀ 39 14:40, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I thought it was my PC. Everything is talking forever to load. Getting lots of "network error" Wikimedia foundation errors. The suck thing is that when I "reload" or hit the back button, anything I typed in the edit window is unretrievable. I've gotten in the habit of highlight/copy in case I need to paste. Tired of typing everything twice. Keeper ǀ 76 14:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I get lots of errors too, although my stuff stays in the edit box. Maybe we all need to donate more money ;-) Tan ǀ 39 14:44, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Keep, aren't you using Firefox? It doesn't have that ridiculous loss-of-typed-text problem. Nevertheless, yes, the slowness is getting pretty annoying, especially when I'm creating accounts, and have to re-type the captcha in a dozen times to get it to go thru. –xeno (talk) 14:46, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
No firefox for me unfortunately. Corporate IE. Keeper ǀ 76 15:07, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
How do you function? No wonder you're such a lackluster admin... *ducks* –xeno (talk) 15:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Seriously, I actually called and convinced my IT dept to let me install Firefox on my work laptop, because using IE to edit when I was traveling was borderline useless. Once you go Firefox, you never go back :-) Tan ǀ 39 15:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
My IT dept. marches to the beat of my drum. F that IE stuff. –xeno (talk) 16:51, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I (literally) own the company I work for. Let that blow your mind as to why I would disallow downloads/webmail on my own desktop. I love to bitch about "that damn corporate mindset". Heh. I am the corporation. Keeper ǀ 76 16:54, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
If you own the company why are you allowing a bloated and insecure browser to be your standard? –xeno (talk) 16:56, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I have the latest Firefox but I also have experienced more slowdowns and errors than normal recently.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:59, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Firefox won't do anything about the slowdowns, but it'll help with the "loss of text" that occurs when you have to use the back button to return to the editing form. –xeno (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't lose text when using IE or Firefox, FYI. Gwynand | TalkContribs 17:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tan, I reported User:Johnpigg and you commented that not all edits were vandalistic. The editor made two obvious reverts to page blanks, but otherwise every other edit is vandalistic. It might also be a coincidence, but the editor is targetting Irish articles yet has a Union Jack on his user page. I've no problem reverting and warning - just thought it looked obvious that this was an SPA vandal. If you get a chance to take another quick look, I'd appreciate it. User:Athena and The First Sex

Hi, As I seemed to be the subject of a lot of Athena's ire over at The First Sex, I'd just like to make it clear that I have no problem with the editor contributing in a reasonable manner and engaging with them to make the article better. If they keep their talk page contributions to the point and on topic I'm sure they can make valuable contributions, but it was had to distil sense from some of the longer posts. I tried to point the editor to guides on how to cite sources and other wikipedia guidelines, but this seemed to be taken as an attack. I might bare some of the blame here, as I initially assumed the editor was experienced as the account dates from 2005. It soon became apparent that this wasn't the case, but by then a stance had been unfortunately adopted. Thanks for taking time on this, and if you'd like to involve me in some way - or ask me to back off for some time - I'm quite willing to be involved. Yours, --Verbal (talk) 21:06, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure, thanks for being reasonable. Hopefully Athana will be open to discussing some of the issues. Tan ǀ 39 21:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
(ec) PS: Unrelated, but how do I get a groovy sig like yours? I ask in the sure knowledge that you're a reasonable man... (sorry) --Verbal (talk) 21:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, as you can see when you are in edit mode, my sig has some additional code than usual. I assume you know where to edit your sig, on your preferences tab... feel free to rip mine off, mine is a amalgam of a couple others. Mostly User:Keeper76's ;-) Tan ǀ 39 21:12, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah so it's just html in there. I was worried I'd break something. Thanks again. :) I'll try tomorrow. --Verbal (talk) 21:14, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to come back to this, but User:72.227.93.73 has turned up on the The First Sex article, and their edits seem to be rather similar to Athana's. Maybe you'd like to have a look. They seem to have a valid point if the reference has been misattributed, but it's rather hard to work out how it needs fixing from the rant. Verbal chat 16:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

RfPP

I know, that was odd. I purged the page and it was blank! I thought it was vandalism at first, but it wasn't. Rollback is having the same problem; someone rolled back an edit and the page blanked itself. The software is hitting a wall of some kind recently. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 17:18, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

The strangest part was that the most recent edit (yours) showed that the page was still 14K or so, but... it was blank. Very, very odd. Tan ǀ 39 17:20, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind word; yes, 10 seconds is quite lenient :) I actually do have a question, if you don't mind. I just blocked User:Ape monkey for 24 hours (my first real block). This would have certainly been an acceptable block period for an IP address with no prior vandalism history, but this account had been used only within the last hour and only for vandalism. Would you have slapped an indef on there for a vandalism only account? Okiefromokla questions? 02:48, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

I almost mentioned that to you - classic vandal-only account, indef block certainly warranted without a second thought. But, everyone has their own style. I adjust based on the kind of vandalism, anon or not, previous blocks, user attitude, and which way the wind is blowing. Typically I start an IP out with a 31 hour block (where this length came from, I don't know, but it's common. Maybe so that kids in school couldn't come back the next day and start vandalizing again in the same math class), then 72 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, month, 3 month, 6, year. But, as long as you use common sense, your blocks could differ than another admin's with no problems. I'm much less lenient (as you should be) with registered accounts - use the WP:DUCK test. Were any of Ape monkey's edits in good faith? Why are they here? In 24 hours, are they going to come back a reformed citizen? Probably not.
Hey, do you live in Tulsa? Tan ǀ 39 02:56, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I had realized after blocking the user that an indef would have been far more appropriate, and you've just confirmed it. You learn as you go, I suppose. And no, not technically, but I do live very near Tulsa. Okiefromokla questions? 03:02, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
I travel to Tulsa monthly for work. I work in the midtown area (15th and Lewis), and stay at a Hilton on the south side, by Oral Roberts. I like Tulsa. Tan ǀ 39 03:04, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah, very nice. I know both areas well. It's a very nice city — much nicer and, for that matter, much larger and more sophisticated than people give it credit for. Okiefromokla questions? 03:11, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of InstantChess.com

Yes it was advertising added by User:Dmitry talanto who has a clear conflict of interest. To fix it I reverted to the version prior to Mr talanto's edits, added a comment to his User talk page. I was editing the article again to add {{hangon}} and a reason on the talk page when you deleted it. Can I have it back please? Astronaut (talk) 16:30, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Can you show me how it would meet notability requirements? Specifically, how it meets WP:WEB. Tan ǀ 39 16:33, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Not without the article, I can't. I only came to the article from a Help Desk question and have not been involved previously in the article. However, a review of the editing history suggested to me that the content was acceptable to WP:WEB before User:Dmitry talanto began editing on 23 June. Astronaut (talk) 16:39, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
There was never any indication of notability, even previous to Dmitry editing. The only link was to the site itself; the article failed WP:WEB and WP:V. It makes no sense that you can't indicate notability without the previous version. I'm afraid this article will stay deleted. Tan ǀ 39 16:42, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh? I was in the middle of adding {{hangon}} so I would then have the time to find out for sure if it previously met WP:WEB, when you deleted it. Unlike you, I'm not an admin and have no access to deleted articles; so yes, to finish what I was doing I would need the article back. However, since I have no real interest in that article it can stay deleted. Astronaut (talk) 17:56, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Whilst on the subject of User:Dmitry talanto, you might like to take a look at User:Dmitry talanto/Sandbox and User:Dmitry talanto/Sandbox1, where he has clearly been developing his advertising. Astronaut (talk) 18:12, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Why did you delete the Cherrypal article and its talkpage without even so much as a reason or any discussion, even after I used the "hang on" tag and made an argument for keeping it? I see where you instruct people to ask you "very nicely" if they want the article back, but this seems somewhat highhanded for you to require when the standard for Wikipedia discussion is civility. I'll give you civility but don't expect any "and a cherry on top" from me. Anyhow, here is what I said on the discussion page before you deleted it. I'd like to copy-paste my civil justification for keeping it, but you seem to have expunged that. Would you mind retrieving it, and we can discuss it from there? DanielM (talk) 16:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Article had zero notability claims (per WP:CORP) and was mostly promotional. Take your "civility" to another admin if you want it re-evaluated; using this attitude with me (and on the hangon page, you basically attacked the tagger while maintaining total ignorance about what Wikipedia notability actually is) means it will stay deleted. Tan ǀ 39 16:11, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Wow. "Take your 'civility' to another admin" huh? Perhaps you could be more civil yourself and adjust your own attitude, given that you require "very nice" requests and so forth? I looked at WP:CORP and Cherrypal indeed met its key criterion of "notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources." It's covered in more than a dozen articles in the last week alone. So you're actually justifying the article by citing WP:CORP, thanks. In no sense, did I "basically attack" the tagger, and anyone who could review my comment could see that, and I ask you again to restore it or copy-paste it because you have evidently expunged it to a place where I can't. My comment justifying the article was civil and reasoned. Next you'll accuse me of "basically attacking" you? Really, we could have this conversation in a reasonable way in the article's discussion page, you didn't have to vaporize it in the first 45 minutes, when I had duly posted the "hang on" tag! DanielM (talk) 16:25, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Articles are deleted in this manner all day, every day, so stop with the "holy shit, you deleted my article in 45 minutes" crap. Can you cite a few of the sources you claim? All attitude aside, I honestly don't see how this meets WP:CORP. All I find is stuff like this, which isn't "coverage". While you might not like me (and the feeling is mutual), I'm not here simply to delete articles - honestly show me WHY the article should be here, per Wiki guidelines, and I'll restore it promptly. Tan ǀ 39 16:32, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

I didn't say I didn't like you. I try not to make snap judgements like that. I admit I'm somewhat frustrated that I created an article that IMO could be informative and useful to people and have it deleted without comment at 90 MPH and with utter disregard for my "hang on" tag and justification where I made the points that you're now asking me to make again to you personally. Instead of making this justification on your talkpage for your benefit alone, I'm going to recreate the article and insert appropriate coverage reference that is not superficial in nature, of the type you ask for. I'd ask that you let the article stand for the decision of another admin to delete or not, if it is again tagged. DanielM (talk) 17:11, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay. If you were able to view the page history, you'd see that initially, I did remove the db tag, stating in the edit summary that we should give it time to be developed. I also said in the talk page (where I did consider your argument) that I would give it some time. Then I researched it on google, and came up with no notability claims. That, coupled with the promotional nature of the article (which it was), made me reconsider and delete the article. I agree to your plan; I won't mess with the next version. Just don't think that I did this willy-nilly - while I might not be the gentlest admin, I consider myself a staunch advocate and upholder of current Wikipedia policy. I would like to request that you reconsider your speedy deletion of this page. The page that was there at the time of your deletion was indeed web-spam worthy of an A7 speedy deletion. But that page had only been there for a couple of minutes though, and it overwrote an IMHO useful and proper soft redirect to Wiktionary because of the internet jargon acronym of the same letters. So I'm not asking that it be restored to the web-site promo page, but rather to the wiktionary soft redirect that had been present for a long time previous to the web-spam. - TexasAndroid (talk) 19:00, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Done. Sorry about the confusion; I should have looked at the page history. Appeared like a cut-and-dry case of vandalism. Tan ǀ 39 22:52, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
No problem. I keep a close eye on most of the soft redirects on the project to watch out for the continual dictionary definitions that many of them get, and that also brings deletions of them up on my radar screen. :) Any such that can be handled calmly and reasonibly like this are good end results. :) - TexasAndroid (talk) 12:54, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Please Help!

Hiya,

I see that you deleted my article on Dr. Patrick Treacy. I was just wondering if it would be possible for you to delete the talk pages on this also at: [10]. I also noticed that nobody else has real information about themselves on their user page!? (which I have and have tried to delete from mine- but someone keeps reverting it!) Would it be possible to delete this also?

Thank you very much, Best Wishes, Yvonnediggins (talk) 14:09, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't see any reason to blank those pages. Are you Dr. Treacy? Tan ǀ 39 14:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
No I'm not Dr. Treacy- Yvonne Diggins is my real name. Would Dr. Treacy have to sign up to this himself to request this? I'm really new to Wikipeda and would really appreciate your help? Do these pages get deleted after a few days? Best Wishes, Yvonnediggins (talk) 14:22, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
I courtesy blanked the page. The debate can still be accessed through the page history, but the debate will not be indexed by search engines now. Tan ǀ 39 14:28, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Yvonnediggins is (according to her own user page and the AfD discussion) an employee of Digino marketing which was apparently acting on behalf of the article subject, whose clinic is in turn a client of Digino marketing. This information, together with the details of suspected sockpuppetry, can be found at the above page and at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Adrianfeane. This doesn't seem to me to be an appropriate case for courtesy deletion, hearing in mind the guidelines.Brammarb (talk) 14:38, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
I read the guidelines, and while I was going to initially decline it, does it really matter? Debate is accessible, page is deleted, we should all just move on from this mess. If I didn't do this here, this issue would have dragged on - especially on my talk page - while other Digino employees and perhaps Dr. Treacy himself requested blanking. Just saving us all some trouble for minimum effect. Hopefully this company has learned you can't advertise on Wiki. I wonder if Dr. Treacy gets his money back for this one. Tan ǀ 39 14:40, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
I think somebody should make a donation to the Foundation, to make up for all the time we should have spent building an encyclopedia rather than debating this case. Even so, I have one more problem here.
This is the first time I come across it, but as I understand the process courtesy blanking also means that Wikipedia itself will not index the page. So if Digino ever engages in similar deceptive practices in future it would be much harder to find this history: the debate is accessible, but not searchable. One of the first things I did was to search Wikipedia talk pages for the company name and not finding it helped to inform my response. 9Nak (talk) 14:57, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Heh, but Al Madrigal piqued your interest? You're a complex one, Eco. Tan ǀ 39 16:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Actually, that CherryPal article above this section is interesting -- and I had no problem locating reliable sources. I gave the editor the links, fixed the page (he had the wrong spelling of the company/product), and I'll send him off into the digital ether. Maybe I will change my mind on your motorcycle hombre later this week, but not for today. I don't feel like writing today. The sun is shining, the air is clean, I feel healthy -- it's a perfect day for a misdemeanor. Ecoleetage (talk) 18:09, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Careful it doesn't segue into a felony. I found sources for that company, too, but I still don't think it meets notability requirements. Anyway, with enough sources, anything can pass muster, right? I had too much of this last night and I'm working through a headache. Tan ǀ 39 18:13, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Update I just discovered a whole bunch of old but great news coverage on Emilio Scotto's journeys, including some fun misadventures in Africa (really, no one beats the Liberians when it comes to have a raucous civil war). I could put an article together on this, no problem. Though the obvious question -- what's in it for me? :P Ecoleetage (talk) 15:27, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

User:Hearthstone lodge

Personally, my policy on when to indef block registered accounts is more liberal than many other admins' stances on the matter. I think that some admins are a little too quick to "indef block first, let the user ask questions later", so I favor giving the user at least a second chance before shutting them down. I figure that if they took the time to register an account, then they may be amenable to learning the policies and becoming a productive contributor. Call me a wiki-idealist, if you will.

That being said, in this case the duck test indicates that this is probably an SPA to be used for promotional purposes only. It's a judgment call, and I can see where you're coming from, so I don't plan on making any objections to your block.

Thanks for giving me the heads up. Cheers, caknuck ° is back from his wikisiesta 23:10, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey Daniel, the problem was (as brought up by another user in AIV) that he's probably a sock of the user whose talk page he blanked. Coupled with the BLP vandalism, it warranted a block in my eyes. If you want to unblock, feel free - I don't have any vested interest in this. Tan ǀ 39 15:14, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
In a situation like that, what you have is a registered user who is ignoring warnings. I know that some editors like to go through the whole process, level 1-4 warnings, and then block accordingly. Some people also see an indefinite block and think "holy cow, he blocked them forever". As you know, indefinite != infinite. What I'm doing is three things - showing the user that we're serious about limiting vandalism on Wikipedia, stopping the vandalism, and giving the user a choice - they can either give up and go away, or now that they see that vandalism isn't going to fly, they can come back and be constructive. Even the unblock request process itself will serve to show them that their edits will be audited.
Again, feel free to override the block - in fact, I encourage it. Perhaps we'll have a vandal-turned-contributer. Tan ǀ 39 15:25, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Probably... For the record, I go on and on about giving people another chance, but I need to see something constructive from them, and/or I'll throw a {{2nd chance}} at them before I even think of unblocking. Two things happen: they run with it (see here), or they'll just go back to trolling (see User talk:Xenocidic/Archive 6#User talk:Timeshappy). –xeno (talk) 16:37, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

About a speedy deletion

Hello good sir

I wrote about a week ago about my montreal band, On The River.

I dont see how this is a breach of protocol, seing as other bands such as The Police (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Police) have pages written about them.

Is wikipedia trying to imply that more popular bands/ideas are the only ones that hold relevant ground? I'm sure my (very) small fan base would dissagree with you strongly.

Also, you deleted the article as I was in the process of editing it. I worked on it for about 10 minutes and poof its gone, so I needed to wait a while before becoming a semi-registered user to be able to respond to it.

If you believe that a small band in montreal that performs 2-3 times a week is too small and insignificant to be discussed on sucha lofty site as wikipedia let me know straight up. If not, please let me finish posting pictures and information about where we play and our band members.

Thank you very much kind moderator/speedy deletor

Alexander CohenAbraxasC (talk) 18:37, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi there Alexander. Did you just compare your band to The Police? The problem is that The Police meet our notability requirements for bands, while yours does not. So, while I'm sure you guys rock and I have nothing against your band, until you are notable enough to meet our consensus-based criteria, there's not much you can do. Of course, if I'm wrong and you DO meet WP:MUSIC, by all means let me know which criteria the band meets (being put in rotation on a national radio station, having a charted single, etc) and I will reconsider immediately. Tan ǀ 39 19:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Alexander - your article was given the same consideration that every other article is given (at least, by me) on Wikipedia. I'm pretty sure the two or three other admins here would agree that your band just isn't quite notable enough for inclusion. If you have comments or questions, feel free to post them here. Tan ǀ 39 20:36, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Case #12: Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast across a national radio or TV network.

I didnt tape it or anything, but on july 12th Montreal celebrated in 50th West Island demerger anniversary, I played for an hour with the band, and it was broadcast on two radio stations (I think mix 96 (95.9) FM, and on another local AM radio, and on a local TV network for at least half an hour...) in fact the whole day was broadcast but we only played for an hour. Im not sure how im going to be able to prove this...

Also, my drummer is in another band that just released an album, and they will be touring next winter.

Does any of this qualify? thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AbraxasC (talkcontribs) 23:25, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, probably not, as you cut and paste yourself, it needs to be on a national radio network. I suppose even if you could borderline show that you were broadcast nationwide (Canada, I assume), we could keep it. Please realize that there are literally hundreds of bands a day added to Wikipedia that are deleted - every garage and basement band in the world wants a Wikipedia page. However, this is not MySpace nor a place for advertising, so we had to draw up some eligibility criteria - thus the WP:BAND guideline. Tan ǀ 39 23:29, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
I should add that I do not consider you a garage or basement band. I was illustrating that this is an extremely popular forum for bands to want to advertise themselves. Tan ǀ 39 23:30, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Alright Ill desist. I was just surprised by the policy here - I looked up Pedia in wikipedia actually, it gave me: An encyclopedia (or encyclopædia) is a comprehensive written compendium that contains information on either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. It seems a little odd that 'all branches of knowledge' is defined by wikipedia as 'all branches of knowledge we consider relevant'. I always thought wikipedia was supposed to be primarily an encyclopedia for the people, by the people, and only second to that a carbon copy of a traditional bound encyclopedia.

I understand it might be annoying to some of the moderators here how an average person could POSSIBLY want to write an article about his or her musical creations, seing how it did not affect the world in a huge way.

Let me offer one example: Imagine Einstein today, writing his first papers which were rejected by universities... rejected by wikipedia as well for not being 'relevant enough'. What a folly. Is Wikipedia being cheap with its webspace? or is it trying to clone traditional paper-bound encyclopedias and appease to who exactly?

It seems to me that Wikipedia is attempting to capture the past... and not the future... and yet considers itself to be open to any addition... as long as it is considered 'relevant'.

Ive been playing music for 5 years. I couldnt care less about being played on the radio, or broadcasted. I play music for the music. I write it from my heart. Why is that less relevant then some carbon-copy clone band that writes one single and becomes a hit, only to fade away completely in a year??

Sorry to undermine the basic fabric of this website, but I dont agree with the policy. Any band that writes music should have the right to a wiki.

Cheers —Preceding unsigned comment added by AbraxasC (talkcontribs) 23:49, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

It's funny how some people seem to believe that everything, everywhere, deserves a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not a "directory of everything". We would have rejected Einstein's papers, as we also do not publish original research. Yes, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and as such, it should convey information on all branches of knowledge. However, "all branches of knowledge" is not "everything". Wikipedia is specifically not an indiscriminate collection of information, which means there are standards for what constitutes information that should be in Wikipedia. This is to prevent Wikipedia from becoming unmaintainable. Imagine how large an encyclopedia on everything would be: everything would include every particle in the universe, every idea that has existed or will exist, every person who ever lived, every organization that has existed or exists, every copy of an object that has existed or exists, every website that has existed or exists, etc. The most basic threshold of inclusion is verifiability, not truth. The verifiability requirement alone would prevent writing about every particle and limit the information that could be included on every person. Moreover, the community has decided not to document every verifiable fact and accordingly has established notability guidelines on what should be kept. Even though that guideline is broader than a paper encyclopedia's guidelines, it is also not "everything".
I'm sorry if you disagree, but that's the skinny. No hard feelings from our end, us admins just enforce the rules. Tan ǀ 39 23:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Just for argument's sake: Knowledge is defined (Oxford English Dictionary) variously as (i) expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. The first definition of knowledge includes the skills (musically-related) I have aquired and recorded through my years of experience.

What Im trying to say is that wikipedia isnt an encyclopedia as it does not cover 'all branches of knowledge'. I do however agree that if everyone was allowed his or her own 'myspace' about their own personal relevations there would be several million more 'irrelevant' pages out there... which is why the first thing I said was that I'll desist (about getting my page recovered).

The name wikipedia is misleading... it implies that anyone can write about anything that he/she created.

I guess thats why myspace is at the same time more intriguing and also more despised: because it deals with the 'irrelevant'.

Thanks for the stimulating conversation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AbraxasC (talkcontribs) 00:04, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Username

This is totally not encyclopedia-related, but is your username from the name of the character Tanis Half-Elven? Just curious! -- Natalya 21:32, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

What would make you think that? And who's asking?? :-) Tan ǀ 39 21:39, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Hahahaha. :) Good books. -- Natalya 22:15, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Spoofer club

Welcome to the "Users who have been spoofed club". :) As a long-term member of that club, I hereby welcome you to it! Acalamari 23:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Wait a sec. Are you saying, Acalamari, that Tanthalas does not suck ass? Hmm. I didn't see this as vandalism, personally....Keeper ǀ 76 00:09, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

To checkuser, or not to checkuser

I never requested checkuser on those suspected socks; the AfD vote outcome was not affected and the accounts seem thrown away or rehabilitated. But I understand the data goes stale and given what is going on at my talk page it may turn out to be important. Still, checkuser doesn't strike me as something to even be requested lightly. Any advice? 9Nak (talk) 16:49, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

The SSP case will be closed shortly. Enigma message 16:51, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't think it will turn out to be important. I think this is exactly what we think it is - a bunch of employees at a company paid to develop this article, we deleted it, and now they're scrambling to create drama to obfuscate the situation. Maybe to avoid refunding a fee. This is all speculation, I know, but really if you sift through it, none of the socks (meats?) has anything credible to say, and many of them contradict themselves or seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what actually occurred. Anyways, if they come back with a legal threat, I'm blocking the whole crew per WP:LEGAL. Otherwise, I think it's a non-event that will fizzle out. Tan ǀ 39 16:54, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you kindly. My time is definitely better spent falling into wormholes embedded on your talk page that lead to content that is dangerous to read while drinking milk.9Nak (talk) 17:27, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Uh oh. I just confirmed by telephone that the poster is, in fact, the real Doctor – and he is considerably distressed. Events on Wikipedia were only part of a greater whole, it seems, which is much nastier than just Wiki-drama. Following that conversation (and a quick look at BLP policy) I'm inclined to not only support courtesy blanking, but oversight – including your talk page and mine. Lodging request now and encouraging him to do the same. 9Nak (talk) 18:15, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, the AfD page is already courtesy blanked, and I'd be fine with whatever you want to do now that you have an inside source into the mess. Let me know. Tan ǀ 39 18:19, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I think it's under control. The socks are all blocked and I've mailed ArbCom to request oversight on the AfD, AFD talk and my talk. Looking at your talk again I don't actually see anything that calls for such extreme measures. Wow, what a mess. Can't believe I've gone from nagging you about courtesy blanking to requesting oversight on the same pages. 9Nak (talk) 18:51, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
What a mess :-( Tan ǀ 39 21:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Copyright vio on Lions Baseball Club

Ground Control to Major Tan: you declined a speedy delete on Lions Baseball Club -- I noticed that because I successfully put that up for speedy delete yesterday and the article's author turned up on my talk page. There is a bit of a problem with the version you okayed: the article has significant copyright violation. Check the text against the club's web site (the home page is down but the text is cache preserved here: [12]). Ecoleetage (talk) 19:08, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

P.S. You weren't online, so I put it back up for Speedy Delete. It's out. Ecoleetage (talk) 20:41, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Oops, if it was tagged as such, I totally missed that. I had a feeling it should have been deleted anyways, but wanted community input. Thanks for helping out. Tan ǀ 39 21:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
