Clarity in referring to a reference edit

Greetings and thank you for your contributions.

When referring to a reference in your edit summary using the citation number is potentially problematic as the citation numbering changes as refs are added or removed. To provide a better frame of reference I suggest using the author's last name and the year. For your recent edit to Born to Kill (gang) that would be "English 1995".

Some articles and/or content are more likely to be contested than others. For any material that is challenged or likely to be challenged adding inline citations is a good idea. It is a mixed bag here on WP with some articles having a citation (or multiple) for each sentence, some having them more or less at the end of each paragraph and some poorly or vaguely sourced. I think having a citation on each sentence can clutter an article unnecessarily so I am not suggesting you add a cite to every sentence.

Best. - - MrBill3 (talk) 11:09, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for March 13 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Đại Cathay, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Triad. DYK for Song-Lý War edit

On 29 May 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Song-Lý War, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the borders negotiated after the Song-Lý War largely remain as the current boundaries between China and Vietnam? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Song-Lý War. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Song-Lý War), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Can you help verify translations of articles from vi edit

Hello TTTAssasinator,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from vi to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original vi article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including vi, using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from vi. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

  1. Nguyen_Anh_9  Pass
  2. Trần_Độ  Pass
  3. Phuong Dung  Pass
  4. The Dance Of Death

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the vi article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.

If you can help, please {{ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Elinruby (talk) 04:41, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Elinruby: I have evaluated the articles and compared them to the articles in the Vietnamese wiki. The article Nguyen Anh 9 is a faithful translation of the original Vietnamese article and is almost word per word, so it checks out. The Trần Độ article also was faithful in regards to the original article, although it was much shorter, and the Phuong Dung article was also accurate in terms of information to the original article. As for The Dance of Death, I could not find the equivalent Vietnamese article, so I am unable to evaluate it at this moment. Hope this helps.TTTAssasinator (talk) 02:25, 7 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@TTTAssasinator: that is really helpful, thank you! I am going to update the last with these. Elinruby (talk) 10:10, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@TTTAssasinator: - according to the history it is translated from here, but that looks like it's an error message (?) I know that is a clueless question but that is why I am asking for help ;) Elinruby (talk) 10:21, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Translation help? edit

I found you from the list of translators, so I hope you can help me. I am working on Draft:Longan witches broom-associated virus and I have used google translate to get me most of the way, but it seems that the Vietnamese terms for the disease do not use the word 'witch'. The terms I found are chổi rồng trên nhãn,[1] chổi rồng hại nhãn, bệnh chùn ngọn, bệnh chổi sể, and bệnh hủi nhãn.[2] Google lends me to believe that these terms refer to dragons and not witches, which seems plausible given the idiom 'witches broom' doesn't necessarily mean anything in Vietnam. I am hoping you can provide a good literal translation, and hopefully I can use it as a DYK hook for halloween or something. Let me know if I'm close or not. Thanks! --Nessie (talk) 02:57, 21 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
