Observation

I have to say that I admire your focus on the LGBT community, Puerto Rico, and women in STEM and medicine. You see, I have a sister that is gay and whom I believe never admitted it to me because I was a Marine. I also have a transgender grandchild who wasn't sure of my reaction. When she told me, I told her that my love for her was unconditional and that it didn't matter what others may think, pa'lante. I know how much people have suffered because of what they believe and how the evil of discrimination can hurt others.

Discrimination is why I took it upon myself to write about the positive contributions which Puerto Ricans have made to our country. You see, I personally know what it is to be discriminated against. One day, I was reading a book about Iwo Jima and learned of a General Pedro del Valle in WW II. I had no idea about there being a Puerto Rican general in that conflict. There are so many things that have been omitted from our history books. I believed that through Wikipedia I could undo some of that and make a difference. After all, the negative impression developed by the news media that Puerto Ricans were drug addicts and all lived off welfare, was not true. We have made many positive contributions to this country and the world in general.

I wanted to share this with you, I hope you don't mind because I am sure that you will make great contributions to the LGBT community, Puerto Rico, and women in STEM and medicine. Take care. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:16, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Marine 69-71, Thank you for the heartfelt message! It means a lot coming from a seasoned contributor such as yourself. We definitely have overlapping interests :) I too am interested in combating systemic biases that permeate both in society and on Wikipedia. On a side note- my grandfathers also served, one during the Korea war and the other in Vietnam. I hold much admiration for our service members and veterans. Cheers! TJMSmith (talk) 22:41, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
  • No, thank you for letting me share this with you. It has been a pleasure for me to share something with a caring person such as yourself. Take care. Tony the Marine (talk) 19:11, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

  Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Hoping for some admin help

Hello there! I hope this finds you well. Sorry to impose with a need for admin assistance: I’ve encountered what appear to be BLP violations on a user page, Rikusentai, indeed the user mainly seems to devote their wiki editing to this page. Everyone involved appears low-profile and there are controversial allegations to say the least, and possibly a minor. So I have a general idea of what needs to happen but it seems to call for a higher pay grade (that’s why you get the big bucks, right?) If you think I can help tho, let me know. Thanks muchly. New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello TJMSmith,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Nashlie Sephus

Thanks for recreating Nashlie Sephus! I made a few minor edits to the previously deleted article - only to see them vanish. I added Nashlie Sephus to Ada Lovelace Award only finding the citation after a bit of work on archive.org.I copied your ref to her entry too. There seem to be six winners in 2019. Need to reformat the table? For some reason, the AWC is not doing much with their ALA] program. I contacted them without a response. There do seem to be a few similarly named awards: PRACE ALA, Augusta ALA, 503 error facebook ALA and probably much more.
I also added Sephus to List of African-American women in STEM fields.
Thanks again! Cheers Adakiko (talk) 20:23, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Adakiko, thanks! I also just started Jewel Burks Solomon who worked with Sephus. TJMSmith (talk) 20:26, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
