I've found that harder to find on the older stuff when I work on reptile articles. Usually it is not in the original literature, you often have to find a contemporary of the scientist or a later commentary that discusses it. I seem to remember running into that with Cyclura nubila, the Cuban Iguana, as nubila can mean "cloudy" or "grey" as in the color, coincidentally, (or maybe not), Gray was the last name of the scientist who first described it(gray/grey iguana or Gray's iguana).--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ

Turtles: Very interesting!

Hi TCO! The article looks very good.

I don't know whether it is worthy of inclusion in the article, near the section on turtles for food, etc., but neuro-physiologists and biological physicists study the neurons of turtles because the fused vertebrae provide greater stability and less noise than do any other animals. (The details of the experiments are unpleasant, however, so much so that I hesitated to share this with you.)

If this would be of interest, I could find you a reference.

Video player some thoughts

Hi, the point you made about blogs using video for years is true(although it's only been 6 years not 10). Blog with video is in a completely different way to Wikipedia of course. What blogs do it embed a video hosted elsewhere, the most common thing is to embed a video that is hosted on youtube. A video on youtube is not royality free, even if the video is entirely free content as the encryption method is actually owned by someone and in thoery at least royalities are paid. Google stand behind there video with deep pockets so there is no issue. The same doesn't apply to Wikipedia of course where everything is suppose to be free. That being said I'm not entirely sure there is any techincal reason Wikipedia cannot embed a video rather then hosting the content itself, but policy wise youtube videos are not advert free. The state of Oregon had a Youtube embedded video and it played on their site and had no ads or anything. Who cares about the format? I mean the computer has some proprietary parts as well. We can still retain an OGG copy. After all, the video I got was pulled off of Youtube and converted. Would you be interested in working with me on this? I would say it is about 80 percent done, it needs work in the recordings and later productions section. Forget biology, but can you use that rocket-powered mind to figure out something we could slap a Turtle Project sticker on, that would still interest you? That's why I suggested a myth. See here or here. These are much more topics where cultural understanding rather than biological detail is the issue.

We are in a crunch to get 20 points of Turtle Project featured content by 01APR. GA and FL are a point, FA is two. We started with 10 points, added an extra point for Painted turtle promotion. Galapagos tortoise is a GA in FAC now. And then state reptile will go into FL queue in a day or two. But we need at least some more GAs (think that would be the fast path).

Maybe free associate a little and think of something that could be gotten to GA or FA or FL, that would cover interests of both parties. Just do some wild wacky thinking and write a bunch of concepts down on paper and google or wiki search a bit. I bet you come up with something! How about Turtle excluder device? Some legal topic (a treaty or law or regulation)? For instance there is an FDA regulation on turtles no less than 4" for pets (kids have died from salmonella). I feel ya on the sources, but how about just brainstorming first and then culling the ones that are impossible? Some of them may have lots of online stuff (like the FDA reg would)?

Not trying to be pushy and we can do some novel or something some time. But if somehow you could think of a turtle topic, by hook or crook, that would fill an immediate need! I think when I look at a topic, what I am thinking about is "can I easily get enough refs to make the article work"? There are articles I'd love to do but it would be difficult to impossible to get hold of enough refs to make it work at the FA level. By the way, Me and Juliet apparently had a few really good moments, just from the script and from the critics. The sandbag crashing right in front of Jeanie foreshadowed the chandelier in Phantom. The "Keep it Gay" moment when you see the dancers live and then the stage blacks out while the music continues and a very short time later you see them in their sweats, practicing the same number and you realize weeks have passed. And there is a great moment no one comments on late in Act 2, when Mac finds out Betty is available to him again, he accidentally is caught onstage by the curtain, and knows the dance routine so well that he hides behind members of the ensemble until he can sneak into the wings ... it makes you wish for what could have been. By anyone else's standards, R&H's three flops are really good plays, and I'd pay good money to see them.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:08, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Me and Juliet

Thanks for the review. I want to go through Carcharoth's comments first and then will get to yours. Since I unsurprisingly write like a lawyer, I always look carefully at comments about my prose and will go through it carefully. The thing is, there is really not much tension in this plot. I'll go back and work directly from the script, but when there is mystery (will Bob find out about Larry and Jeannie, will he beat them up) it is dispelled rather quickly. I think the idea was that they were saying, "this is just one crisis that happens in the run of a successful show, this his how they deal with it, and then they'll raise the curtain tomorrow night and do it all again." I agree with you, the plot is uninspired, but the end of Act 1, if done well (and from what I've read, it was done well), should be an utter showstopper.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:53, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi TCO, I apologise for removing the map from the F and A discussion page; I'm fearful that every week will now see full-size postings of FPs we didn't display on the page. The design of the page is partly premised on the idea of rationing the displays to avoid cramming and text squashing, and to focus readers on the amount of featured content we believe they are likely to absorb in one visit. Turtles have TCO-like backbone

I wanted to follow up on a promised reference to turtles and neurology. The fused spinal-column reduces the noise for scientists studying spinal nerves. Here are recent papers by some Danish acquaintances of mine, which are published in the best journals:

Interesting. By chance, I had just come across an outfit a couple days ago that actually sells these Siamese twin type turtles (or sells turtles in general and had a few pics of the phenomenon). This is the sort of quirky page that Qrrsdog or Mbz could start. I get the impression it is a general type thing and I'm sure there are papers on the happening. Hard for me to help. I noticed the word "pride" in the first sentence which sounded like pov to me. I was about to axe or tag it when it dawned on me, mercifully, that the article was "featured list," whatever that means. Something short of FA, apparently. But something editors had to work hard to get. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade. I don't mind axing articles that are "C" rated, but like to stay out of the way of editors when they are creating a masterpiece. I'm not sure I can be of help. Thanks for asking. Re: U.S. state reptiles FLC

I don't think I'm the best person to review the U.S. state reptiles list because I am primarily a film editor, I have only done that Latter Days FAR and a GAN review for another film, and I also have very little experience working with lists. It would be hard for me to review it as, unlike film articles, I'm not familiar with what a Featured version of the list should look like. That said, I can still provide some feedback:

• Remove the boldface in the first sentence. Bolding is not compulsory and in awkward cases like this, it is better not to bold. (See WP:BOLDTITLE and WP:SBE)

Those are good essays and I heart the idea of using common sense and appropriateness, not just taking a wiki-hammer and banging nails. (For instance, if you know how to use them properly, occasional one-sentence paras are appropriate.) That said, I think bold reads fine and "state reptile" is really the key concept. Most of the articles where we link back use that term and it is the most common within the article. Feel good with bolding it.

I moved the turtle link to the lead, although I'm ambivalent about having that link in the lead (like to keep some blue out at times for easier reading and it is not a difficult concept). Left reptile where it is, so as not to clash with the bolding. Is fine a sentence later.

• "In Pennsylvania in 2009, the House passed" → "In 2009, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed"

I want to keep parallel structure, with the sentence before (in Minnesota, blabla. Then in Pennsylvania, blabla. Virginia proponents blabla) It's the state that is the key for the series of examples, thus leading with that and the year is secondary detail.

• "In 1969 Oklahoma designated" → "In 1969, Oklahoma designated"

Put in. Could swear I had that in there before and someone else took it out saying I was overcommaing.

• "As of January, 2011, twenty-six" → "As of January 2011, twenty-six"

• There's that short one sentence paragraph in the History. I would just merged it with the next paragraph.

Disagree. The general Wiki guidance on short paras is geared to writers that can't write unified structures. A short para uses properly for transition or as a header is legit. Mashing on overview sentence into a single para of three, would be bad org. In any case, think you will like it better now that it is directly under a header.

• In several of the citation accessdates: "March 06, 2011" → "March 6, 2011"

I just went there now and tried to search for some combinations like intermezzo, mirra, sheet music, Alaleona, etc. Didn't get anything. I think it is more likely to be a published score than sheet music. While I rarely look for sheet music (I don't play or read music), I'd imagine them to come up on Amazon like any other publication. 1. All I got was the CD and the 1932 unavailable thingie on Amazon: [6].

2. Here is Google books: [7] Can you tell if any of them have the notes? (even with no view?) They all look like discussion to me.

3. Here is Barnes and Noble: [8]. By the way, the search window there is a lot less friendly than Amazon (seems like you need exact matches, order disqualifies things, Boolian not working, etc.)

You need to use google books, then click on an entry, and in a box in the upper right, there will be links like amazon and bn and albris, which may or may not have them but are at least listing them. books.google.com.

4. I did a bunch of other (not shown) Google web, Amazon and BN searches. I'm not a "jock" at searching, but my Google-fu was not pulling it up.

5. Could you take a look please? Maybe there are some tricks for looking for music that I don't know.

I've searched enough, man. I'm probably not that good at searching for music really, given my aculturedness. I think it is inefficient for me to go after it more and not worth the gain. If someone else can track it down for Adam's MIDI great. If Adam will do a MIDI of the Sousa composition (we have that sheet music) great. I will also ask the guy with the MIDI file if he will just donate it. If none of that works, I'll go without.

Sandbox issue

I want to let you know that one of your sandboxes has been deleted. It shows up in the top 5 google-hits when searching that person's name, despite its being in extremely early draft status, and there is nothing in the draft as it currently stands that explicitly asserts notability. It doesn't help that the subject is also a minor, and generally speaking biographical articles of borderline notable minors aren't widely supported. If and when you're ready to really work on this article including filling it out and clearly establishing notability, you can ask an administrator to undelete it; however, I will ask that you add the NO_INDEX template to the page while it is under development. Fluxes in metallurgy

The flux (metallurgy) article was MOSTLY about fluxes as used in metal-joining, but that's just due to imbalance in this article, not a wrong meaning. The article does mention the many perfectly legitimate uses of fluxes as flowing agents (and also purifying agents and additives) in smelting-- it just didn't do that in the LEDE (now fixed). It just needed/needss some work to mention these up front (done), and expand the extractive section below (not yet done). After all, smelting is where the world flux entered metallurgy, and it hasn't ever left that use just because the hobbyist knows it better from solders, etc.

Thanks for your other work on fluorine. I think, BTW, that fluoride ions really do decrease the melting point in slags in much the same way they decrease viscosity in most fluorinated materials (by disrupting certain ionic interactions) but I haven't been able to find a good reference for this. However, fluorine's use in industry is probably more "all of one peice" than is realized by many chemists, and this disruption of stickiness gives the element its name also, very fittingly. Looks better now. The whole thing is a little muddled, but that is just the state of our wiki-articles and the use of the word flux having so many different uses. I am NOT a smelting expert. But am used to seeing chlorides (and fluorides) used to dramatically reduce the melting (and boiling) point of metal oxides (and an ore is usually a metal oxide). Then again, it wasn't clear to me if the CaF2 is used to reduce melting points or if it's more about having Ca combine with the slags (they talk about lime as well...and that is really just a source of Ca, I guess). I donno...

In terms of mechanisms, there might be some vague connection of melting aids and slippery surfaces, but I would beware of making that analogy. I think of it more as the overall system thermodynamically having a lowered eutectic or some such. and the physical reason probably has to do with the F- help breaking up the network of metal and oxide. O2- and F- are actually very similar in size and behavior. And the structures like CaF2 are also seen in materials like UrO2. I donno though...TCO (talk) 20:31, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

I had most of your same thoughts. Undoubtedly Ca is useful by itself to get rid of phosphorus, and Cl salts do lower the temp by eutectic mechanisms. But on the other hand, the steel industry is STILL a big user of CaF2, when they could be using cheaper salts, so there's something funny going on that NEEDS F. In particular, fluorosilicates are busted up silicates, which are otherwise very hard and very difficult to melt. Perhaps some of that goes on in iron smelting. One place I do know there is analogy between low-melting fluorocarbons, SF6, WF6, UF6 and so on, IS in the formation of cryolite in the aluminum smelting industry. AlF6³⁺ is just "slippery" and the salt melts far more easily than any other aluminum salt. SBHarris 20:56, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

I think it's a melting aid. Like a solvent almost. (That is what Meiers calls it.) That is more important than impurity removal (after all lime can be used for that and is). It is about the Fl ions and CaF2 is just the cheapest source of them. Adding halides into oxides reduces their melting points because the space-filling structure gets all messed up with different anions in there. Fe2O3 had one melting point on its own, and then a lower one with CaF2 there as well. It really is the same thing going on as when you do metal oxide crystal growth and use a "flux" to lower the melting point of the compound. Fe2O3 is a metal oxide is a "ceramic". Think this is kinda different (other than name) than using a resin for protecting the surface of a metal that you are welding or soldering. I really don't care to straighten out all the uses of the word flux and articles on them though...TCO (talk) 21:42, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Indentation on talk pages

Talk page watchers

Following up on a question you asked at the help desk, while the privacy rules prevent you form knowing exactly who is watching your talk page, you can make some reasonable guesses. For example, I turned on the option that adds every page I edit to my watch list. Not everyone does this, and even those that do can turn off watching manually, but many will be lazy and just leave it on. So the very act of my posting this adds one more editor watching your page, naming me. This information may not help a lot, if you are interested in knowing if someone is watching you and not commenting on your page, but I would guess that a fair proportion of the 43 editors watching you are in this list of editors who have commented at your talk page.--SPhilbrickT 21:42, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Looks slick and you are making a big upgrade getting those sounds in there. I like seeing things take off. I dropping one into Myrrha for the first time and learned a little about using the template. A330 FA nom comments

I don't see why you removed your comments so quickly. I was trying to take care of comments from Nikkimaria and then SandyGeorgia at the time. The A340 is so closely tied to the A330 that it should be mentioned in the Lead. Tonne is the UK/International term for 1,000 kg, and that's the spelling version used in this article. 1. I KNOW it tonne means metric ton, just that the latter term is easier and more common. (no biggie).

2. WRT to th 340, I was getting that as I went into the article. Just tell me up front with a topic sentence and it will take care of the confusion. Or this would be a great place for a chronology or flow diagram (what led to what). IOW a non-photo image.

3. I cut it because it is a lot of work to deeply parse an article (I was starting to really get into it). Not only for nits, but also for content and flow and such. And Sandy said she doesn't like long reviews. So SHE can track down whoever does what she wants (and no bitching about not enough of them). I am cool with you. It has a huge amount of good content and in places reads very professionally. Think a tiny bit could be done to make it less of a detail glaze (topic sentences), but net-net good stuff. Well, I am going to make this article one of my main focusses then. I have never helped in getting an article to attain featured status. This will therefore be a useful exercise in understanding just how that works. But you are right, citations are the most important thing atm. I just wish there were a .pdf versions of the books in the Further reading section so that I could add specific references to claims made in the article. Are there any? I don't know about /pdf. but in the US, there is this thing called ILL (google it) and it works very well...and very few people known of it. I understand it works in many other countries. Maybe even in Africa. Waht it means is that you can almost treat your LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY like the Worldcat. just ask the librarian for an ILL form. She may look a little googliey at you...but stand your ground. then fill out the card. And you can get references shipped from ALL OVER. P.s. If it still doesn't work, I will get my ass in gear and help from the US, where we have more books than Africa. (kidding...don't hurt me...had a huge Afrikaans rugby player for a flatmate.)
