I disagree (on it being a separate issue than the B-W-I), and have said as much in my comment at drv. If consensus is to restore it, thats fine. Can you explain how "Bigotgate" as a simple redirect is an attack? Bigotsgate was an actual article, I'm not sure if the writer plans to bring it to DRV. I did notify Fences&Windows of the Bigotgate DRV though. FWIW, I don't think you would have to apologize: while I think that deletion was in error, one shouldn't feel the need to apologize for erring on the side of caution in deference BLP. –xeno^talk 15:34, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

I've just noticed our guideline on redirects specifically allows this one: "if a redirect represents an established term that is used in multiple mainstream reliable sources (as defined by Wikipedia:Verifiability#Reliable sources), it should be kept even if non-neutral, as it will facilitate searches on such terms". –xeno^talk 20:03, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Query

This is a case involving a userpage. The userpage has been tagged for deletion some days prior. An IP has just deleted the content. This is not a case of the author blanking their own article / userpage, but a case of someone else blanking a userpage without explanation in the edit summary. This is the edit. I reverted it for the reasons I gave, and warned the IP. Am I correct in doing this? I would like to make sure, before I'm blasted again for cocking up. Thanks, Orphan Wiki 11:37, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Essentially, I think its because people were creating articles in their userspace and trying to argue that because the pages were in userspace certain aspects of policy didn't apply (like manual of style, proper citations, biographies of living persons). The pages also don't show up on google searches if they exist only in userspace. I don't remember when the last big blow up about it was, but I think it was from maybe 2007 that they decided just to not allow it explicitly. Syrthiss (talk) 15:51, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

As with all things at wikipedia, you can start a discussion on the Village Pump about changing it and see if you have consensus. If a substantial consensus emerged that it was useless the policy could be re-written. At the very least, someone there might be able to explain better than I can why it is in place. Hope that helps. We got a request at unblock-en-l that this user be unblocked since her previous account was compromised. You've blocked her for being a sockpuppet, but at User talk:Larry jefferson the first unblock request states Per WP:GOTHACKED we will have to leave this account blocked. You are free to start a new one. This new account does not appear to have performed any blatant vandalism; the only edit in article space [1] was reverted for lack of citations (appropriate, of course) but does not appear malicious. User pagemoving articles way too brashly

I don't know if combating pagemove vandalism is your cup of tea, but Montelaba (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) uses the pagemove function way too often and without any source to back his actions, the latest two were on Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Edition and Laguindingan International Airport. I think this may be something for WP:ANI. From what I can see, this user has never once posted to a talk page to discuss things... has had multiple articles deleted as copyright violations... and moves pages around to unsourced names. Assuming good faith, they don't appear to be doing much good for the encyclopedia. However, I think that anything that should be done needs to be a community decision. Yes, and it has been established that IPs do not own their talkpages like a registered account does. I wouldn't warn an ip for 'vandalising' their talkpage by blanking it, but at the same time I'm not going to desist from reverting the blanking. Both really. And it goes on to say 'only while sanctions are in effect'. While I don't necessarily agree with this guideline, IPs are allowed to blank most content from their talk pages. Its probably not worth getting into a fish slapping dance about. The ip can try to hide that they are a sock, and anyone with a reasonable amount of suspicion will look at the block log and talk page history. There was no SPI that I'm aware of; I blocked because of the deafening quacking. I gave all accounts/IPs including the now-indefblocked sockmaster 1 week, though if that IP's static then a longer block might well be appropriate. An SPI might well be useful, but it doesn't take too much delving into the various histories to spot the socking. The only real reason I didn't block for longer was because I wasn't sure if 12.7.202.2 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) was shared (I don't recall seeing the notice then that's there now). What it looks like to me at first glance is you are relatively new to the encyclopedia, and even if you aren't breaking any 'rules' you are going against some guidelines (for example, page moves) that have been long established in order to try and smooth out the disagreements that might arise in a collaborative project such as this. Since I have been working to put out the edit war fire, I haven't had a chance to investigate. The issue yesterday was you and another editor moved sunny's article between 'entertainer' and 'singer'. That was a valid move on the surface, and not against guidelines or policy. However, if there is a chance that someone would object to the move then you need to follow the guidelines at requested moves. Yep, he was playing the proxy card, which I think he eventually realised is not a good long term thing to do. Many have tried before and soon run out of IPs. Those blocks all look fine, and feel free if you like. It's the ones where you can't find a port number for that IP that are the ones to be wary of. In this case a single open proxy is moving around on one of Hong Kong's busier ISPs. I did a little bit of editing. I think it certainly would survive the speedy deletion round, as it isn't overly advertorial and asserts why the label is notable. I'm not sure it would pass a full AFD, just because I don't know enough about the other articles in this area. Actually, the message I left on your talkpage is a standard template that includes the 'welcome to wikipedia'. I don't expect editors to know everything about how Wikipedia works, but I'd assume that after 6 months (your first edit being in December 2009) you might have some feel for our basic guidelines for articles and notability. United Drug speedy deletion

Hi Syrthiss, thanks for the message on my talk page. I think United Drug is an article of note, and I'll work more on it when I get a chance; here's an Irish Times article from May 11, 2010 stating that "United Drug has today reported pre-tax profits of €31.5 million for the six months to the end of March 2010, a five per cent increase on the €30 million recorded a year earlier." They are probably the biggest supplier of medicines to pharmacies in the Republic of Ireland - and I think they also own quite a few as well, and they generally have a big (albeit largely behind the scenes) influence on healthcare in Ireland. I'll have to do some research on their UK operation, and although it doesn't need a big article, I would definitely think it's notable. Dear Mblegacy, we have tried to explain many times on your talk page what you need to do if you wish to donate that text. Please follow the instructions on WP:IOWN to release that text. Please consider that once you donate the text, any other editor here can edit the wikipedia article on Farouq Abdul-Aziz. Over time, it may change quite a bit from what you have on your website. You could also re-write it from the start so that it doesn't resemble the text on your website at all, and that would remove the problem with the copyright violation.

Deletion of Mod My... LLC

I don't see why the Mod My... LLC page was deleted, it is simply an informational page about a company and its website. This is no different from the wikipedia page of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. I understand that you may think it is advertising, but if you read the content, you would see that it is not. If it was advertising, words like "please visit" or "best website" would've been used, and I would understand the deletion. The page was simply going to give a brief UNBIASED synopsis of the website, in which there was no possible advertisement in the description.

Specifically, the article briefly mentioned your company and then linked only back to the company's own website. At first blush, that looks like advertising. If you look at the pages for Facebook and Twitter, I believe you'll not only have a link back to their website but (1) credible assertions of notability and (2) reliable third party sources that back up those assertions. Yep, I would trim the article down to what I could verify and what is reliable but at this point the only thing I have confirmed reliably is Mr Farouq conducted an interview with Lynn Redgrave. I expect that much of the problem Mblegacy and we are having is due to language differences and the western world's west-centered reporting media. I'll reply here and then also cut and paste the same text to your talk page: Dear Mblegacy, I think the article has promise. Mr. Abdul-Aziz is clearly (to me) notable. The text is no longer a plagarism problem (at least to any of my searches). I believe the only significant obstacle is the lack of reliable sources. The BFI link clearly establishes Mr. Abdul-Aziz as the interviewer for that film but referencing the other bits of the article are very problematic. IMDB cannot be used as a reliable source in most cases, except perhaps to support a filmography. While I don't doubt the information on your http://bucaillelegacy.com/FarouqAbdulAziz.html site is accurate, I'm not sure we could say that it is a reliable source. We don't know the background on the information there. Are there any print books about him? Articles about him on major journalism sites? Dear Mblegacy, I have told you what you need - links or directions to reliable sources (even in Arabic) that can support Mr. Farouq's notability. When I say directions, I mean that for sources that don't appear online you can merely give the name of the newspaper story, date and year. Specifically, if you say 'Mr. Farouq was awarded the X prize for journalism', we expect that there is a source that will show that indeed happened. Despite the marketing speak above about Alaan.cc above, which I don't appreciate, if you want an opinion on whether it is a reliable source you should make an inquiry at the reliable sources noticeboard (or I can do that for you).

I am sorry that I missed your previous message. I only get a notice that things have changed on my talk page, and there were other comments that came in. I am not trying to deliberately stall you or anything, but without you or another person who reads Arabic to spoon feed the sources I'm feeling we're at a standstill. In addition, I am not the one familiar with Mr. Farouq. I tried just now to see if there was an Arabic-language project here to ask for assistance, but it looks like the last edit to their discussion page was in 2008. No, the difference between them and your company is that I could go and do a google search and find articles in The Wall Street Journal or other sources external to the companies that establish that the company is notable. To give an analogy: your article is about a software product that your company produces, not about the company itself. We don't have an article on each router that Cisco produces unless that router is notable in some obscure way (quantum computing, perhaps) and that is established by sources outside of Cisco. As I am not familiar with the topic area and personally am very sketchy on using youtube as a source I'm not very comfortable reinstating your edit that he removed. Is there some kind of restriction on you or the topic area that prevents you from reinstating the edit? It is covered under the same grounds, reverting edits of banned users, so I don't see why it would violate any kind of 1RR (especially considering it was several days ago). Keeps? I only see one version created today by you at Cliff coenraad, but I do see a version deleted back in May at Cliff Coenraad. It looks like you have a combination of problems which I may or may not be able to help you with:

• Both articles were deleted because of promotion (which is what I warned you about in my message when I deleted it). Specifically, the language used in the article was promotional ("one of a kind sound"). You need to state verifiable facts in a neutral tone.
• Both articles were about a person with a questionable claim to notability per our guidelines for notable musicians or even our general notability guidelines. In Mr. Coenraad's case, I did a google search for his name and only found a single news item from a source of unknown reliability. Since it was an award, that could indeed be a notable event but we would have to vet the source to make sure it wasn't just a publicity thing.
• The Cliff Coenraad article had copyrighted material introduced to it with no assertion that the material was permitted to be used in that way. This is a greater reason to delete than any of the others if it was the single fault, but the material could be reverted and avoid the copyright issue.

I see that in the meantime you recreated the article, and I have since deleted it again and protected the page from re-creation. If you wish, you can try to create the article at User:Edithvermelis/Cliff Coenraad and address my issues above. If you can create a neutral article, we would love to have it added to our encyclopedia.

Hi Syrthiss. Its very strange you could only find 1 google result on Cliff Coenraad!? Through google you can find lots of different info and accomplishments/releases, interviews, and many more references to Cliff Coenraad. you can also check the wikipages of Leon Bolier and Trance Energy for example. I could try to write the article a bit more neautral, but the fact about Cliff having a "one of a kind sound" was a quote by several well known djs like Marco V, Tiesto, and more.

Can you also tell me what kind of copyrighted material you mean? What else can I do to make this page work and get approved for wikipedia?

1 google news result. The other google results were from things like lastfm set lists (which indeed can establish notability, for regular radio play) and from fanpages. We can't use our own pages as a reference because by definition we are a tertiary source. As for him having a one of a kind sound, if you have a reliable source of those other DJs saying that then by all means include that in quotes and attribute that to them. We are all flabergasted for the 'one google result'. Problem is we got a lot of questions from promoters, colaborating Dj's and fans about why Cliff Coenraad isnt mentioned on Wikipedia? (Well he is mentioned, but there isnt a Cliff Coenraad page.) Creating one is proving to be extremely difficult. since Im not convinced I can apply to all the wiki regulations I will leave the creating for now and we can all get back to making music. It sounds like you represent Cliff Coenraad? At Wikipedia, in order to stay neutral, we all agree to avoid writing about subjects in which we have a conflict of interest. Im his number one fan. He is a good friend of mine. To be neutral I was asked to write the page. I have consulted him to check all mentioned releases and albums since its easier to get the info right from the source himself. Seems to me it was the most neutral article possible :) Im just no genius with computers and I am amazed how difficult this seems to be for a regular person. When i said that 'we' are all flabergasted about the 'one google result' I meant Cliff and several Wiki known producers who are working at the studio at the moment. I'm sorry, I was reacting negatively to the 'becoming a nice joke here' bit about finding one google news hit for him. I appreciate that you spent time making the article, and I hope that until you started mocking me that I came across as being genuinely interested in helping you correct the errors without compromising the encyclopedia. Considering that I have heard of Cliff Coenraad in real life, I'd still be interested in an article on him if you or another fan wished to create a page according to our guidelines. Cheers. Boys will be boys and they thought it was funny so started teasing him as a wannebe artist. I was just enjoying the humor and tried to share it with you.
