ANI Experiences survey edit

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Administrators' newsletter – December 2017 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).

  Administrator changes

  Joe Roe
  JzG
  EricorbitPercevalThinggTristanbVioletriga

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

I was trying to find the proper version number for this one and instead was told the release didn't include one. I hate to put up old images for discussion like this, but we really need a valid license number in the release so we know which license to tag it as. ~ Rob13Talk 03:26, 5 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Good article edit

I was very impressed with "The Hypatia Transracialism Controversy" that you worked on. I just recently stumbled on your article and quickly linked over to read the New York Magazine article and then the actual article. After reading a lot of other stuff, I came back to your Wiki article. I think it is the best thing written about this. Bravo! I will use it as a model for my students. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DaddyHorne (talkcontribs) 17:09, 5 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@DaddyHorne: thank you so much for your comment. It's very kind of you, and I really appreciate the feedback. SarahSV (talk) 00:32, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Just in case you're wondering why I've just thanked you for this 28-month-old edit, it's because I've just delightedly discovered that it got rid of a logo image that I felt was shooting the GGTF in the foot, but which lead to my second most painful ever 'mobbing' on Wikipedia (here) when I tried to say so about 6 months before your change, though I obviously have no way of knowing whether my suggestion played any part in that change (let alone whether you would have agreed with any of my contributions on that occasion). Anyway, thanks again.Tlhslobus (talk) 08:23, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

And by the way, thanks also for these edits, that created the Free The GGTF Three logo (even though I unfortunately have to admit that I don't know enough of the background to the two cases to be able to be as confident about my understanding of them as I would wish).Tlhslobus (talk) 08:35, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tlhslobus, I'm glad you're happier with the new image. It's always nice to see a thanks, even if somewhat belated! SarahSV (talk) 00:43, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Very kind of you to say so, Sarah. Sorry about it being so belated (but that probably couldn't be helped since, as a long-term side-effect of my above-mentioned painful mobbing, I only found out about it 2 days ago). And thanks again. Tlhslobus (talk) 01:13, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Got it, thanks. SarahSV (talk) 02:03, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Lingzhi, when I first read this, I thought you were sending me a copy of an email you'd sent to someone else. But I'm now wondering whether you think I am that person. That would explain why you're telling me about something I've barely commented on. SarahSV (talk) 05:33, 12 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Can you help with the restored edits about a shark bite on the Elissa Sursara Wikipedia page? I noticed you removed them per talk which inluded a correspondence with Wikimedia Foundation. They have recently been restored without regard to this. I have removed them and asked the author to become familiar with the correspondence before restoring them again. Unsure of how to protect the section from being restored so freely. Any help is appreciated. SiWren (talk) 10:57, 7 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Chelsea Manning edit

Since 3 July 2017, I've been editing Chelsea Manning. Today, strictly as a matter of idle curiosity, I clicked on Revision history statistics to see where I rank in comparison to other editors. I was impressed that you are the top editor both by number of edits and by added text. However, I was surprised that your last edit was 11 September 2013—more than four years ago. Admittedly, it's none of my business, and feel free to ignore my question. But was it mere coincidence that you quit editing her page just 21 days following the announcement of Manning's gender transition? In any case, please accept my thanks and admiration for doing so much heavy lifting during your 2 years, 8 months of editing. And best wishes for this holiday season. KalHolmann (talk) 20:30, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi KalHolmann, thank you for saying that. At the time of the name change, the article had been promoted to GA and I was thinking of taking it to FAC. We anticipated that there would be a name change, and we were preparing to hold a requested-move discussion. But as soon as the name change was announced, another editor arrived and moved the title without discussion, which led to a tremendous fuss and lots of new editors arriving. In the end, I took it off my watchlist because it wasn't possible to maintain the quality, and it's hard to watch an article you've put a lot of work into be pulled apart. I hope it recovered. SarahSV (talk) 04:57, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply. I wasn't editing Wikipedia then, but read news accounts of the article becoming a battleground over her name change. It's a damn shame you had to withdraw under those circumstances, having contributed more than anyone else. KalHolmann (talk) 05:09, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Fixing Sofixit? edit

Sorry, it's me again, Sarah. In the GGTF Archive8 to which I already linked above, while looking for something else I also accidentally found a section (here) where both you and Ca2james were complaining about the harmful effects of WP:Sofixit for female editors. This reminded me of some unpleasant experiences of my own with it, and prompted me to try to make some quick changes there (per WP:BOLD), initially without success (see here). I then thought about discussing it at the GGTF but decided not to do so due to my past painful and/or ineffective brief involvements there, so I then basically gave up. But it then turned out that the editor who had reverted me unexpectedly made a milder but rather similar change proposal himself (see here) which is currently being discussed and voted on. (I'm a bit astonished at this, as in my experience few other editors are sufficiently reasonable to meet somebody halfway when they don't have to, so I'll probably be giving him a barnstar shortly; but I digress). Anyway, given that you and Ca2james unwittingly helped get this ball rolling, I belatedly thought it might be a good idea if you and/or she at least got a chance to have a look at it (and my apologies for not thinking of getting in touch about it earlier).Tlhslobus (talk) 07:14, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Josephine Butler and married name edit

You know, if anyone else had used the phrase wedded to Josephine in this context, I'd have thought they were trying to make a joke... --GRuban (talk) 18:03, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

But because it was me, it couldn't possibly have been a joke? :) Actually, I didn't notice it until after I'd saved. SarahSV (talk) 18:11, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
LOL  . User SarahSV is hereby commanded to appear before the Supreme Cabal to answer the odious and heinous charge that she did wrecklessly and with malice aforethought perpetrate an Uncivil Personal Attack by suggesting that the main author of Josephine Butler might be a necrophiliac.   Tlhslobus (talk) 07:27, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Holiday Cheer + a barnstar edit

  The Happy Holiday Barnstar
How about combining a Barnstar with a Christmas Card? That is why this message is appearing on your talk page. Simultaneously and at the same time, this barnstar is conferred upon you because during this past year you worked and contributed your time to improve the encyclopedia. You also have received far too little recognition for your contributions. In addition, this is a small attempt at spreading holiday cheer. I've appreciated all the things that you have done for me.

Happy Holidays edit

  Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

So you see even Charles was looking for a reliable source :-) Thank you for your contributions to the 'pedia. ~ MarnetteD|Talk 03:23, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi SlimVirgin. I just wanted to let you know that I appreciated your input at the ANI regarding the block and how you felt it wasn't constituted. Perhaps I should have asked for clarification first, but I felt at the time that what I did was the right thing to do. I hope you understand.
