hello ma'am! I have edited the article on economic liberalization earlier also and that was on the main page, the 1st time it got deleted and after that only one sentence is there on the main space.

hello maám, i changed the topic from economic liberalisation to beggary in india because when i tried to edit the previous atricle.. it was restricted and needed peer approval and thus i didnt end up working on it.   Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. Briefing of students for India Education Program edit

Yesterday, as an administrator working through the list of articles nominated for speedy deletion, I came on RECESSION IN UNITED STATE OF AMERICA(2007-TILL DATE) , by user Sarbartho.mukherjee (talk · contribs), which had been correctly tagged for speedy deletion under WP:CSD#A10 as duplicating an existing article, 2007–present recession in the United States. Having deleted it, I left a note on the author's talk page explaining that, apart from duplicating an existing article, it cited no sources for what it said, but read like an essay on the topic, contrary to the Wikipedia:No original research policy; that this was fine for a student paper, but an encyclopedia article should summarise, with references, what has already been published in reliable sources. Another, less serious, problem was that it was presented as a single block of text, with no sort of layout or paragraph headings.

I have "userfied" the article - moved it into his user space - at User:Sarbartho.mukherjee/RECESSION IN UNITED STATE OF AMERICA(2007-TILL DATE), where you can see it.

Looking at the user's other contributions to understand the background, I found this page. I am concerned that, judging by this instance, these students have not been adequately briefed. They need to understand than an encyclopedia article is not the same as an essay, that they should not choose an existing topic and write a parallel article, they should as a minimum read or have explained to them the three key content policies:

and they should study the useful guide to writing

There is also the newly written Wikipedia:A Primer for newcomers

I am sorry if this sounds negative or alarmist, but experience shows that where students are set to write articles without adequate briefing the experience is often disappointing and frustrating, both for them and for those who have to deal with the result. There is good advice at

One useful technique, to avoid premature deletion, is to encourage students to draft their articles in user sub-pages - if they go to Help:Userspace draft it will show them how to do that.

Again, I am sorry to sound negative, but I think that good briefing now will make this a more positive experience for your students.

Regarding Did you know status edit

Ma'am, for nominating your article for "Did you know status", one has to expand the existing article by five-fold. You have asked us to add just 500 words to our article. This is not letting us nominate our article for "Did you know status". The reviewers are rejecting our nominations. There should at least by 5x expansion or it is not eligible. Basic.atari (talk) 03:09, 21 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Comment: a new article can qualify as well. The requirements are explained at WP:DYK#DYK rules. Note also that the "hook" (the interesting fact to be mentioned in the DYK link on the main page) "must be cited in the article with an inline citation to a reliable source... The hook fact must have an inline citation right after it." JohnCD (talk) 10:29, 21 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Did you know edit

Shrin asked me to give some advice. Because DYK articles are linked from the main page, it is very important that they are good, and so they are carefully checked and you need to get them right. Read the page WP:DYK very carefully to understand what is required, particularly the first four sections under "Selection criteria". Don't worry about number 5, "Review requirement" - it won't apply to you. You may also get some ideas from Wikipedia:How to write the perfect "Did you know" hook, and by looking at the actual DYKs on the main page. I am not really an expert on DYK; for detailed advice you may do better to ask one of the people listed at the bottom of WP:DYK. Before you ask someone, click on "Contribs" beside the name to make sure that s/he is currently active. JohnCD (talk) 22:13, 21 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Copying text from other pages edit

After running across contributions from several of your students, I really hope that you will help them understand that simply cutting and pasting text from other webpages and documents is, with a few well-defined exceptions, not an appropriate way to contribute to Wikipedia. I hope you will familiarize them with the policies on plagiarism and copyright violations. Thank you and sorry to trouble you. Please contact me if you have any questions. I have blocked one of your students edit

I have blocked one of your students, User:Ds731992‎, for repeatedly inserting copyrighted text into Wikipedia articles. I understand that this is an issue that you and the class's ambassadors are working on with the students, but in the meantime, those of them who repeatedly violate copyright cannot be allowed to edit Wikipedia. I have informed the student that they will be unblocked when they speak to their ambassador about our copyright policy and both they and the ambassador post on the student's talk page saying that the issue has been addressed; in the meantime, User:Ds731992‎ will be unable to complete any on-Wikipedia assignments. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 13:18, 2 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank's for informing me. Yes, I've noticed this has been going on with many of their articles. I had a special session in college yesterday with Gurmeet, the local Wiki Ambassador, and am definitely taking it seriously. Hopefully it should be easy from here on. - Shirin--Shirin tejani (talk) 13:33, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I appreciate your working with your students about this. I've just had to block another one, User:Saumya1025‎ for inserting copyrighted information in the past hour. The terms of his/her block are the same as the last one - I will be happy to unblock them when they and their ambassador can confirm to me that the student understands our copyright policies. WP:TALK Guideline edit

Hello, I find you and some of your students posting messages on talkpages at the top of pages. While its not a big thing, its a good practice to be a rome when in rome. Wikipedia is not Facebook / Google plus, the custom here is to put messages at the bottom. Please refer WP:TALK. This will mean others who have been in this world feel comfortable when coming across these talk pages. Srikanth (Logic) 16:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey edit

Hey there; I've been helping out dealing with the copyright problems some of your students are having, and as such encountered the messages you've been leaving for them; things like this, for example. I think it's great that you're keeping in such regular contact with the students, but in a lot of cases we're dealing with people who are likely to find completing the course very difficult if they keep having copyright problems. It might be worth putting a bit more detail into the copyright-related aspects of your messages. Ironholds (talk) 05:26, 14 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree - I had to delete another copied article this morning (from one of the India Education Program students, but not one of yours, I think). The main policy page Wikipedia:Copyrights is long and complicated, but there is an excellent short page Wikipedia:Copy-paste which explains things clearly: I suggest you ask them all to read that, or at least link to it if you have to warn anyone about copying.
