OK, so I did the edit and it keeps telling me my reference is wrong. I need help. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_(entertainer)#2008%E2%80%9313:_Hollywood_ventures — Preceding unsigned comment added by Willk94ever (talkcontribs) 20:00, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Willk94ever, it looks like there were some issues with formatting as well as with the grammar - the content was removed by Jessicapierce with the comment "Undid recent good-faith edits which may have been meant as an update, but which removed a better citation in favor of a worse one, which also contained broken formatting. The addition was also verging on minutiae and included an unclear sentence". Since the edits were challenged, the next thing to do here is to open up a dialogue with Jessica - I've tagged her in this. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:17, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello Shalor.

I am planning on adding this section to the Science and Civilisation in China page, but I would like feedback on the format if it is ok? I will continue editing it in the meantime, like adding Wikipedia links to major topics. Thank You! This is my first time using Wikipedia so I am nervous!

About Images with Copyright Problems.

Apologies for the mishap, and I will promptly re edit the document shortly. The images in question I have searched to see if there was a copyright on them, and as DoctorM64 made them himself, and that I found no copyright I thought it was okay. I still have a lot to learn about wiki you see. I am looking now in fact and it seems that section was already removed? I will read the article thoroughly to see if I left anything else and will remove it. One simple question though, given the reception the game received prior to being shut down (and with mention of it being shut down) why could not a fan game that has its own wiki page be mentioned in the article for Metroid? If it can what would e the best way to mention it, whether or not in passing? I feel considering such reception it deserves at least an afterthought comment. If the DMCA claims would cause problems here then I can understand and won't press. Apologies for the mishap, and I will review the Uploading images and media document yet again. _luckybluejay27 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luckybluejay27 (talkcontribs) 20:33, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Luckybluejay27! It looks like the addition of the game was reverted for two reasons: the first is sourcing - the game would need to have coverage in independent and reliable sources that establish the game's notability. So in other words, the section would have to have sourcing even if the game already has an article. The second is that you added the game alongside the official game list - fan games aren't listed there because they're unofficial. The main article gives off the impression that it does pass notability guidelines, but since it's not an official game it can't be included in the main game list.
My recommendation would be to work on an overall legacy section that would include mention of this game. An example of what I'm thinking of can be seen at Bubsy_3D#Legacy_and_impact, although if there were ever multiple fangames there could be a section like this. Anna Mangin article references

The Anna Mangin article now has two inline references. If that is sufficient, please remove the tag. If not, tell me right here and I will attempt to add references.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 01:42, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Dthomsen8! We could remove the tag about inline citations, but the article could still use more citations as a whole so the tag about improving references should remain. Thanks for making the citations in-line! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:23, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

References

Hi shalor,

Im having issues added a refrence page. For some reason im unable to add it. Any suggestions, pointers? Nadiabozhduga (talk) 23:22, 10 August 2018 (UTC)NadiaNadiabozhduga (talk) 23:22, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Nadiabozhduga: Add Template:Reflist to the bottom of your article/sandbox under a section named "References" or "Citations," or whatever you fancy. As an example, check out Dthomsen8's linked article. –Vami_IV✠ 00:08, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks Vami_IV! Nadiabozhduga, I've added the template to the page for you. Also, it looks like you don't have Visual Editor enabled - you can enable it via these directions here. I highly recommend using it since it's definitely a bit more user friendly than source mode.
On a side note, I do have to caution you about one thing with your draft: it must be written in a neutral, encyclopedic tone. Words like "shocking" are seen as opinion statements, so they should not be used in an article. Also, make sure that the article doesn't come across like it's arguing a specific viewpoint, as it shouldn't come across as a persuasive essay. Even if it's coming from the right place, the article still needs to be neutral in tone. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:04, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
  • I did some formatting to the page and I do have another note: make sure that your sourcing is the best possible sourcing. You can use primary and popular press sources, however these may not always be the strongest sourcing out there - I'd definitely recommend looking to see what academic and scholarly sources are out there (ie, peer reviewed journals, books published through university publishers). I'd avoid things like eHealthInsurance since that's an e-commerce source (in a way), as their primary function is to serve as a middle man to get people insurance. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:15, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Mary Osborn in sandbox revised, OK?

I have made revisions to the sections of Mary Osborn in my sandbox that you mentioned (the award-winning and the Scientific American article as a legacy). Could you check to make sure I understood and fixed what was wrong? best, Laura Hoopes, General Fellows Weds.LLMHoopes (talk) 17:53, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi LLMHoopes! I made a tweak to the lead over the term "vital" since that wasn't sourced - I did change it to frequently used, though. Also, would you say that her support of women in science could be seen as activism? The title for that section just reads a bit odd since most of the section headers are one or two words. Also, when mentioning specific terms like leaky pipeline, it's a good idea to link to something that explains it. (I've done this for you since it involved creating a redirect.) It actually looks like there is no article on Wikipedia for the term (which is surprising), however there is a section for it here. That section definitely needs some TLC and expansion. It actually looks like it could merit its own article, given the amount of literature out there for this specific term.
I hope that I'm not overwhelming you with all of this or discouraging you! So far you're doing an awesome job! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:22, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, Thanks for all the help. I'll take a look at women in STEM at some point. It does look like a tweak or two would be useful. Not discouraged at all! LLMHoopes (talk) 03:44, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Course rename?

Hi. I've been doing some tidying up of the course categories (which are a total mess - see Category:Dashboard.wikiedu.org courses, California State University for an example), and creating various missing ones. I don't really want to add to the mess if I can help it, but the way that the course categories are derived from the course names means that us category types can't do much when faced with eg Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/The University of Alabama/COM 300 Human Communication Research (Fall 2018). There's a substantial category at Category:Dashboard.wikiedu.org courses, University of Alabama but that "The" in the name means that course wants to go in a "The University of Alabama..." category of its own. Since you're named as the WikiEd contact for that course, do you have the power to rename it? TIA Le Deluge (talk) 16:50, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Le Deluge! I would have to ask if I can rename it, just to make sure that it doesn't interfere with WikiEdu's recordkeeping. I'll ask now. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:38, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
    Great, cheers.Le Deluge (talk) 17:48, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Le Deluge - I asked after this and it looks like I can't change it at this time, as the enrollment links for the course have already been sent out to the students. Changing it would cause quite a bit of confusion with the students and instructor. I can rename it after the course is over, though. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:07, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Fair enough, I guessed from the start that off-Wiki links would be a problem. My itch would be scratched if the name stayed the same but the category could be changed by an edit to the page. I assume it's generated off the institution name in the {{course details}} box, would changing that work? Le Deluge (talk) 18:22, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
  • @Le Deluge: - I'm not sure if that would work or not since I can't guarantee that this wouldn't be reverted back to the use of "the" when the page refreshes. Worth a try, though. The on-Wikipedia entry for this pulls its information from the Dashboard page, which includes the university's name. Changing the university's name would alter the Dashboard's URL, which is the main issue unfortunately. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:33, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
(sorry for the slow reply - I thought I'd pressed "submit" and obviously I hadn't) I've had a bit of a play with it and it looks like the cat is set from the page name regardless of what you put in the template. Given that some places like Berkeley now have 4-5 different categories, perhaps some thought needs to be given to a tech fix to allow "someone" (the Wiki Ed contact?) being able to set categories directly on these things? I don't know how it works wrt the dashboard etc, but it needs to happen. There's a "bad" one just been created - Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/2018-2019/ENGL 121 (Fall 2018), I don't know if it's too late to get that one renamed? Cheers. Le Deluge (talk) 10:35, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Le Deluge: It looks like the class was renamed to Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Howard Community College/ENGL 121 (Fall 2018), so this was left behind. I think it's OK to delete it, but I've asked just to be sure. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:21, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with...

Just knowing if my article evaluation was done properly. Thanks!

--Hbgolightly (talk) 01:22, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Hbgolightly! I think that it's a good start, but it could use a little more detail. These are some additional questions to consider:
  1. Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
  2. Is the article neutral? Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  3. Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
You have a good overview, so maybe just a sentence or two more? Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:41, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Article Evaluation

Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you? Yes, it is. Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added? Not that I am aware of. What else could be improved? It seems fine the way it is. Is the article neutral? Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented? Check a few citations. Do the links work? Does the source support the claims in the article? Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference? Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted? What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic? How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects? How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merari1 (talkcontribs) 03:26, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Merari1, I'm going to move a copy of this to your sandbox so your instructor can see it more easily. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:59, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Magnolier

Hello Shalor! I have a question about what I can include on my User page. Is it acceptable to include short quotes from books or poetry (crediting the author), or must they come from the public domain? I wasn't sure. Thanks. Magnolier (talk) 02:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Magnolier, Wikipedia is a bit specific about copyright so I would stick to public domain quotes to be on the safe side. The reason for this is that quotes tend to fall within fair use guidelines on here and it's harder to make it fit these guidelines on a user page. Hello.

I need help with... I am having a hard time searching for an article. I did the tutorial for how to search but after trying to do it on my own I am not having much success . I would like to do a topic on Modern African Americans life or something in that sense.

--Lcrensh (talk) 21:23, 9 September 2018 (UTC) LCLcrensh (talk) 21:23, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

That said, you can always look at the articles in the category for Category:African American stubs. Stub articles are ones that definitely need expansion, so you should be able to find something to work on. There's also the specific category of Category:African-American history, which will have pages of various different lengths and completeness. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:25, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with editing my sandbox so I can learn in the visual editor tutorial. I'm sure I'm not doing something very simple, but I'm not sure what I've done wrong. I want to paste the information from the tutorial into my sandbox page. I've never used a blog or HTML. Do I need to highlight the words in my sandbox first? Do I need to backspace to delete them and then paste my data into the sandbox? BTW, I am using CTRL + V to paste. Is that wrong too? Thank you for your help.

--Elsiesgirl1915 (talk) 12:32, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Elsiesgirl1915! To add content to your sandbox from a web page, all you have to do is highlight the text, copy it, and then paste it. You don't have to delete anything in your sandbox at all in order to add more content. If you want to copy from an article on Wikipedia, however, you need to make sure that both pages are open in edit mode in order to make sure that the wiki code copies properly. Try experimenting some more with your sandbox and let me know if you run into any issues.
Above all else though, don't worry about messing up anything on your sandbox. The beauty of Wikipedia is that you really can't break it. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:33, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello! I am having trouble with my account here on Wikipedia.

I am enrolled in Xavier_University_of_Louisiana/Human_Rights_in_Global_History_-02_(Fall_2018) , however, it is showing that I have two user pages (one that is linked to this course and another showing me as another user). I have access to both of the pages and oddly enough they are underneath the same login. It is as if I have two different user pages for the same account. I believe I have not been getting credit for my assignments because this is the page my teacher and classmates interact with.

This is the page I signed up for and used for my activities User:Tmaldona

And this is the other page that my classmates and teacher have been interacting with User:198.190.213.250/sandbox

PLEASE HELP Tmaldona (talk)

Username Change

Hi, Shalor!

I'm enrolled in Writing for Online Audiences 2018 with Kathryn Enders. and I changed my username from JessKronenwetter22 to Kwetter22. I don't think it's registering the change in my classroom. I was wondering if you could help me with that. Also, I just noticed there's something strange going on with my signature. Thanks! Kwetter22 (talk) 12:50, 16 September 2018 (UTC)Kwetter22

  • Hi Kwetter22! I fixed this on the Dashboard for you! As far as the signature goes, it looks like you're writing it out as ~~~~Kwetter22 as opposed to just ~~~~. You don't have to put your name at the end of the four tildes. This is actually a pretty common mistake to make: I did it myself and so have many others on Wikipedia, so no worries. :) On a related note, there's actually a button that will create the signature for you - it's this one:

Clicking it will add the four tildes for you. It's a pretty handy thing, although admittedly the image used for it isn't immediately obvious. When I first saw it I thought it was used for making equations or something along those lines. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:01, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Irene730AG! This is a good question! It looks like you started the training module on drafting in your sandbox - as far as editing goes, it's similar to editing a live Wikipedia article. Once you click "edit" you should see a page that's mostly blank, with the exception of the box saying that this is your sandbox. You can click anywhere in the white area underneath this box and you should be able to start editing it similar to how you add text to a word document. This video goes over it a little if you want something more visual. On a side note, I'm pinging Ian (Wiki Ed) since he's your Wikipedia Expert. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:16, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Society, Ethics, and Technology (Rowan College at Burlington County) - Introduction

Good evening Shalor,

My name is Petro Skrypnyk. I'm an international student at Rowan College. It is my 3-d year at this school. I'm taking the Society, Ethics, and Technology class as a part of my program (Computer Science major). So far I am very excited about this course since compare to the rest of the on-line courses I've taken this one has a direct connection with a reality. I'm very glad to have an opportunity to try to contribute to a such famous on-line encyclopedia and source (which I personally have used A LOT starting at a high school) -- Wikipedia. I'm very happy to have a chance to communicate with people like you, since thanks to you and the other Wiki Editors such a huge mechanism of open source is working, and it is developing and getting better every day. Thank you for taking part in our course.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'll be sure to check out the resources you shared with me! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.179.3.127 (talk) 18:47, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

  • No problem! On a side note, make sure that you log in every time you edit as otherwise Dashboard can't track your edits. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:14, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

Am I even on the right track?

Hi Shalor, I have added to a stub article in my sandbox, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly and am on the right track.

Will you review it and let me know if I'm getting the understanding of this or if there is anything that you would consider a "red flag?"

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hbgolightly (talkcontribs) 02:34, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Need Help!

Hello,

I have been assigned Gold Country article to edit. I haven't made any changes to it yet. I am currently in the middle of gathering reliable information. I am having trouble on what I should include. Maybe you can help. I wanted to add a History section. Under History I thought I could put main events that had happened in the Gold Country area. Like Sutter's mill, the Railroad, Black Bart, Empire Mine etc.. Are those good examples? I feel like they pertain to the history of the Gold Country area. I have more to include. Also none of the information on the page is cited. So I'm lost on if I should keep the information there or not. I have been gathering this information all day long. Just want to make sure I am on the right tract.

Seneca College - Tangled Web Check in

Hi Shalor!

I'm Ashley Cochrane from the Tangled Web course at Seneca College. I'm just getting starting on adding a citation to the Tourism page and I just wanted to run it by you to make sure that I'm doing the right thing.

I have the edit in my Sandbox right now. I am planning on making a small edit to the Ecotourism section. I've found a source for the information. I was basically just going to add a little blurb about Costa Rica's contribution to the foundation of Ecotourism with a citation to a case study. Because the article is so general, is it alright to add more direct information? The subsection on Ecotourism is just giving a basic definition and I think linking readers to information about Costa Rica is beneficially to overall knowledge.

Anyways, I'll keep the edit on hold for the moment. I just wanted to make sure that I was doing this properly.

Thanks in advance! Ashley.cochrane (talk) 18:29, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Shalor,

I finished my proposed changes to the social presence theory article. I would love to get some feedback if you are able. You can find the changes in my sandbox, and I posted them in the article's talk page as well.

Thank you.

Repeatedly deleted article A-W-R

Hi Shalor,
One of the students in this course - which appears to have finished in December 2017 - has re-created and then apparently asked for WP:G7 deletion of the mainspace article.
While I'm no expert on theater, articles I've created include The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin, The Pram Factory, Light Shining in Buckinghamshire and so on, and I know the difference between a "bump-in" and a "bio box" (hmm.. looking them up, they both appear to be Australian theatre jargon).
Would it be inappropriate for me to jump in and help out QsCarolyn? The course appears to have finished a year ago, but if it is still open for credits, maybe that would be the wrong thing to do.
Your thoughts about this?
Pete "I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw" AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:13, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Shirt58! The class is over, so no worries. To be honest, even if it was still in session, I have no problems with Wikipedia editors interacting with students. It's a good way to learn about editing and collaboration. :) In any case, I think I'll pop over to the student's page and recommend that they use AfC for this article since it looks like it's kind of being a work in progress type of deal and because sourcing looks like it'll be a bear to find since the name will bring up a lot of false positives. Any help you can give them is definitely greatly appreciated! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:47, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

No New Section in Sandbox

Hello.

I am unable to add "new section" in my sandbox. Could you help me please?

Cham

--Chamsok (talk) 22:49, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Chamsok, you can add a new section to your sandbox by (while in edit mode) clicking on the paragraph box at the top of the page. This will open a dropdown menu with various options for headers. If you would like a visual representation, this video may be helpful. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Lacey.teel (talk)

Hello.

I am having a really hard time figuring out how to use the sandbox. There are all these slides in the tutorials about keeping notes in here and citations and what not, but it seems like all it does is publish things to articles? I don't understand how to create new sections and keep articles in here. I have been getting marked down on assignments because I keep thinking I am putting things in my sandbox but nothing is ever there and the tutorial is not helpful at all.

How to find Templates on Variety of English used in an article

Hello Shalor,

One of my students was editing an article (Speak Good English) and inadvertently changed some words from British to American English. On the talk page someone questioned this and then provided info on the templates for dialects. I replied to them with the following comment: Thank you for the extra information as I didn't (and still don't see) the #Template:Use British English template on this article. I'd like to know how to see it or where to look for it on other individual articles as this will be important to my students. Perhaps our Wikiedu people Shalor (Wiki Ed) can help me with that though. In the meantime, I will go and change the edits back to the British spelling. As my class is a class in Linguistic Anthropology, we emphasize respecting diverse varieties of languages, we definitely want to follow the guidelines as defined by the community. CESchreyer (talk) 22:44, 3 October 2018 (UTC)CESchreyer

But, I wasn't able to tag you for some reason. Can you let me know how to check what dialect or variety is being used so I can let my students know. I didn't see that in the training manuals, but my apologies if I missed this. Thanks! CESchreyer (talk) 22:51, 3 October 2018 (UTC)CESchreyer

  • Hi CESchreyer - you can see this template at the very top of the article when editing in source mode or Visual Editor. It's a smaller looking template, so you have to look specifically for it at the very start of the article. A good general rule of thumb, though, is that British English is typically used on most articles that deal with content outside of North America. This isn't always the case, but it's common enough that it's something that I try to remember. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:33, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

International Sign

Hello Shalor,

I am currently in the process of editing a page for Professor Shreyer's ANTH474 Pidgins & Creoles class and I am having a couple of issues. For International Sign (that I have assigned), I am trying to find sources for citations on information that is already published to the page. For a lot of the information published, it looks like there is a source available but nothing cited for it. When I try to research the listed sources from the bibliography and references, I can't find the information posted. Are you aware of a way that I could check the bibliography or references listed to see if I can find more information that is already written but not cited?

For example, these paragraphs are published to the page w/o any citation:

"A parallel development has been occurring in Europe in recent years, where increasing interaction between Europe's deaf communities has led to the emergence of a pan-European pidgin or creole sign. It is referred to by some sign linguists as "Eurosigns". Influence in Euro-Signs can be seen from British Sign Language, French Sign Language and Scandinavian signs."

"A manual alphabet is used for fingerspelling names, which is based on the one-handed systems used in Europe and America for representing the Roman alphabet. In a two-way conversation, any manual alphabet known may be used; often one speaker will fingerspell using the alphabet of the other party, as it is often easier to spell quickly in an unfamiliar alphabet than to read quickly. ISL also has a standardised system of numbers as these signs vary greatly between sign languages."

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I can also be contacted easier at forsythe_aaron@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Hi Shalor,
Thank you for the help. As I mentioned, some of the resources I can't access or can't find reference to the information not cited. In the meantime, is it ok for me to add the research information/ sources I have come across and then leave those sections with a "[citation needed]" note? Af122 (talk) 19:32, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Absolutely! As for the other sources, I'd just go ahead and ignore those and try to find new sources to back up the uncited claims. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:07, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Guidance on image usage and copyright

Hi Shalor, I'm compiling my research for my article on Unangan Hunting Headgear (FNST325), and wanted to double check Wikipedia's rules on using images. I've checked out previous questions on the Teahouse page and those have been helpful, but I wanted to run these by you for feedback.

This guide from the Univeristy of Toronto has been helpful in finding images in the public domain. I'm planning to use one found from the British Museum. Am I correct in understanding that I would need to upload to Wikimedia Commons (attributing to © Trustees of the British Museum) first and linking to there from my article page?
Here's the image found
British Museum's Terms of Use, Copyright & Permissions

Do you have any further guidance on museum images, where the piece dates pre-1900? For instance, there's a drawing on the Smithsonian site, which is dated 1822. It's attributed to Ludovik Choris, a painter who died in 1828. Would this count as being in the public domain, or does the Smithsonian own the copyright? I can email them to ask, but thought I'd ask here too.

Found this article on free images from the MET as well and just wanted to post it, in case it's useful for anyone else.

Thanks for your help, Alias112358 (talk) 03:19, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Alias112358! Unfortunately the image is released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license, which means that it can't be uploaded - in order for it to be used the image would have to allow commercial usage. Essentially the image can't be released under a more permissive license than the one it's released under. The reason why they can insist on this is because they were the one who took the image in question, so there's a creative copyright in place over how they chose to photograph the artifact, even though the artifact is very old. While the page I'm linking to is for Flickr files, the chart there on Creative Commons license compatibility applies to any image released under a CC license. However that said, I would recommend using this search to see if you can find anything usable.
In good news, not all museums do this. The New York Met releases their content under 0 copyright and depending on the type of artwork, some images can be used. For example, scans that reproduce an old painting (ie, older than the 1920s and not currently copyrighted) can be freely uploaded. However if the scanner decided to use some artistic license with the scan, then we can't unless they released it under a compatible CC license. It can get tricky, to be sure, but what this means is that you can definitely use the painting you pointed out. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:41, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Question about using Wikicode

Hello. I cited my sources through the visual editor. But my professor introduced the source editor to cite the references. I cannot understand how to use Wikicode and the source editor even though I checked the training page several times. Could you help me to go through how to use the source editor? And I am wondering whether the citation through the visual editor and source editor are different. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skybluejjami (talkcontribs) 19:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi! Here's how to cite something in source:
  • In source mode, click on the "cite" tab - it should be the last option in the editing bar. Clicking this will bring up several options, one of which is a drop down menu that has the name "templates".
  • Click on the templates menu. This will bring up several different options for citations: web, news, book, and journal. Click on the one that's applicable for your source. I'm going to give an overview for journal. You should see this:

  • You don't need to fill out all of the fields - you should fill out the basics, which will be the name of the author(s), title, Journal name, date, volume and issue (if applicable), and the page you're using (if available or applicable). You can also fill out the date accessed by clicking on the little number box next to the empty field - it'll fill it out for you. Basically, you want to fill out enough information so that people can track down the source if they wanted or needed to.
  • Press the save button and the source will appear on the page. Save the article and voila - you have added a citation!
You can also create a citation if you have something that doesn't fall within those lines, such as a citation to a film. Just place reference tags around the completed citation (you can use any format, such as APA): <ref>Citation</ref>.
I hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:16, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Old course pages deleted?

Hi Shalor, the links on User:Reagle to my first two courses (in 2014 and 2015) are now red.

Do you know if they've been moved somewhere else? Thanks! -Reagle (talk) 11:55, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Reagle: I'm not sure - it looks like they were the ones that were ran by WMF's education program. I'll ask about them to my colleagues to see if they have an answer. ReaderofthePack (。◕‿◕。) 13:38, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Sorry, this is me - I was signed into my main account to see if there was any deleted page history. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:46, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Reagle, it looks like the old extension was shut down, which ended up removing the old pages. (See this discussion.) There are dashboards for the old courses now here and here, for (2015-1-Spring) and (2014_Q3), respectively. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:45, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
    • Thanks Shalor (Wiki Ed), would those dashboard pages then have corresponding pages on Wikipedia? I prefer to keep the links pointing to Wikipedia. -Reagle (talk) 19:54, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Guidance

New to Wikipedia.

Saw you on my talk page tutorial with Ian (Wiki Ed).

Curious about your approach to identity on Wikipedia.

1). Noticed that you did a piped link away from your page: [[Help:Using talk pages|Shalor (Wiki Ed)]] whereas Ian did one to his talk page: [[User:Ian (Wiki Ed)|Ian (Wiki Ed)]]

2). I noticed you're verifying your real-life identity using crytography. How does this work, and would you recommend me doing this?

Thanks,
