unbiased evaluation

Hello Sergecross73, I have a quick question. As a part of a discussion trying to find some NPOV/consensus language on another article, I ended up on RS/N about citing a tweet from a journalist/reviewer. One of the comments noted there was no WP article for the author. While I don't believe this to be the standard for a SPS, it did point out (to me) that an article should be created. Accordingly, I have begun an article (PC Perspective). I believe it satisfies notability, with appropriate cites. However, I fully acknowledge I am not an un-biased editor in this case, as I believe the article subject to be both notable and a RS. Is there a good venue to get this evaluated objectively? Thanks! Dbsseven (talk) 19:36, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Dbsseven. No problem. Sorry I didn't respond right away. I was thinking about it. Usually, I'd say "Hey, I'll look it over for you." But the truth is, I have a harder time personally determining the notability of websites. I mean, we usually decide notability based on the WP:GNG - substantial coverage from third party websites. But how often do websites do full coverage on other websites? Sometimes, but not as much as other subjects, such as games or music or something. So it can be hard. We also have WP:WEBCRIT, but that's more or less the GNG too, with factoring in notable awards it has received. You could start a discussion at a relevant WikiProject, but even there, your mileage may vary. Many are barren and will get no response, and others, like WP:VG, could get you a wide variety of responses - some have rather lax views on notability, and would say it looks fine, while others are over the top strict, and would probably chastise it. There's also WP:AFC - if you wanted to turn it back into a draft and run it through their review. But I think they're pretty backlogged, so that could take a while. In all honesty, considering that your position of being "unbiased" is more of "being a fan of the website", and not an actual WP:COI or something, (you don't write for them or anything right?) you can really just go without a review for now, and just save all this for if/when it ever was sent to WP:AFD or a merge discussion. Sergecross73 msg me 13:24, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi Sergecross73 Thank you for the thoughts. And I should have been explicit: by my bias is as a reader, but no COI. I had thought about the Wikiproject computing, but it doesn't appear to be very active. I'll post there and see if someone gets to it, eventually. Thanks! Dbsseven (talk) 14:58, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
No problem. I didn't think you had a COI, but I just wanted to make sure I was covering my bases. Didn't want to make it sound like I was accidentally encouraging COI editing, which I'm actually very against. Anyways, for what its worth, in my opinion, there's enough content to warrant a separate article, and you generally used reliable third party sources, so it looks okay at a glance. I just didn't go a thorough search through the sources to see if they counted as significant coverage or not. So I imagine that would be your hangup should someone take issue with it in the future, FYI. (If that's indeed a problem, like I said, didn't check.) Sergecross73 msg me 15:22, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
There is something a bit odd about this site. I looked at their forum. There are four million posts, which indicates high activity. But, there was only one member online, which suggests a dead forum and doesn’t make sense with that large a forum. An hour later, still the same one member online. Also, there is an extremely low post rate. Usually a spate of posts around the 20th of each month with few replies. Then dead space. I looked further. The forum appears to have been copied from a closed site named onetechsearch.com located in Romania. Pcper.com is in Canada. Might mean nothing. Just seemed odd. O3000 (talk) 15:36, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
That is weird. Perhaps they've gone through some changes from the past? More less shut it down? Or maybe going through some changes currently and its down? I don't know. I've never actually used the website, to my recollection. It's odd...but probably wouldn't play much of a role in Wikipedia's notability discussions either... Yo

Just wanted to apologize for kinda losing it at the Sonic Heroes talk page. I just got sort of mad because I had spent hours researching and expanding the article and wasn't really happy that you accused me of being OWNy (I hope I'm not). I didn't intend to get pissed and still really enjoy working together with you. JOEBRO64 19:04, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

TheJoebro64 - I apologize for being a bit short with you as well. We don't always all see eye to eye, but we do seem to have a pretty good system down for Sonic articles - you doing the bulk of the writing and myself/Dissident/Popcornduff revising/editing/tweaking of it. I think we all get a little irritated from time to time, but it brings good results in the end, and it seems like we all are good about making that come first. Chrissymad - Do you mean AlexH? This editor seems to be doing a lot of things Alex never did. (Nominating articles for deletion, moving them to draft, using reliable sources like Billboard. Just the musical interest and the fact that a 3 day old account had this es within their first 20 edits strikes me as similar a bit to AH...in any case I'm fairly sure whoever it is, is definitely not a new account. May not be him though, you're right. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 19:42, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Definitely not a newbie, but doesn't look like AlexH. -- ferret (talk) 19:44, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
I do find it suspicious that this person is citing policy right and left after 3 days of editing - I wouldn't bet against him being a sock. But I don't think its AlexH. Alex wasn't one for citing policy or getting rid of articles. He was more of a "lets include everything, look this social media post shows they are notable" type editor. Nice! I saw them in their 2017 tour, and it was an amazing show - they've still got it. And yeah, the gap between albums was rough. Between this wait, and seemingly Keenan's dwindling interest in anything besides Puscifer and winemaking, I'm fully expecting this one to be APC's last. Which is fine, I'm just happy they managed to finally get out another full album. For a while there, they had only really managed to release 1 song in like a decade's worth of time (By and Down) and I was starting to wonder if it'd ever happen at all... FILTER (band) page

Hello. Just curious as to why you've removed my edits 3 times. Co-founding member Brian L rejoined FILTER. He is all over the Facebook page; he started a new Instagram account as "Brian Liesegang - Filter" - where he posts pictures in the studio recording new Filter tracks; and the latest Facebook/Instagram video Richard Patrick says that Brian is back in the band. Please give me a legitimate reason why you still feel you need to remove it? I've edited it correctly, with respective links that backup what I'm editing and why.

You did not "edit it correctly". Every single time you just put a link on the edit summary rather than adding a reference. You've been warned and blocked multiple times. How do you still not understand how to do this correctly? Also, did one of your video actually confirm band membership? The ones I had spotchecked only said they were working on music together. They worked on a song together back in 2009/2010 too, but he didn't join the band. So there's a difference. Sergecross73 msg me 01:29, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

  Administrator changes

  331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
  Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

  Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

  Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

FLC review of Theory of a Deadman discography

Hello! It's me...again! Hope your day is going great. :-) I submitted this discography for FLC review in February. It's gotten a couple reviews (which have been addressed) and has one user who is in "support" of its promotion, but the review appears to have come to a standstill. Do you have any experience in the FL process? What would you recommend I do to try to get more reviews and support? I thank you so much in advance for your wisdom. — Miss Sarita 14:51, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Hey Miss Sarita. Glad to see you're still plugging away on modern rock related content! Unfortunately, my guidance is a little more vague this time - I personally don't do a whole lot in the GA/FA type stuff - I often create/rewrite content into the C or B level, and then usually let others bump it up to GA if they like going through that whole process. (Not unlike how things went down with us with "RX (Medicate)", though you did a lot more work on that one than just a small bump in quality.) That being said, I've noticed that, much more so in the video game related subject area, editors often leave neutral comments at related WP:WIKIPROJECTS asking for further participants. It works for them sometimes. At least with something like a discography, you could probably rationalize leaving notes at a number of talk pages - WP:ALBUMS (the most active usually), WP:SONGS, WP:MUSIC, etc. Sometimes it helps to make a comment like "If you leave a comment at mine, I'll leave a comment at yours/do a GA review for you, etc etc", if you are in fact willing to do that for someone. (FA reviews are rather involved, but it seems like any halfway decent editor can do a GA review, so you wouldn't be getting in over your head with that, in my opinion.) Sergecross73 msg me 16:27, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the advice! Contacting appropriate WikiProjects is something that was suggested on the FLC today to encourage more momentum in the process, so I'm happy to hear a second expert opinion that repeats that recommendation. Before I contacted you, I only left messages at the WikiProjects listed on the discography's talk page, so I appreciate the additional WikiProjects you suggested. It's just wait and see now. Thank you very much for your time and continued support! — Miss Sarita 17:23, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
No problem, any time. Best of luck with the FLC. Sergecross73 msg me 17:27, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Final Fantasy VII edits

For my Encyclopaedia Britannica post, at the top of the electronic role-playing game article, there is a link to see article history. That is where I found Michael Ray notable RPG post. As for my related media and merchandise post, I am new to Wikipedia, do you have any tips for me on how I could post this information without seeming like I am trying to advertise this product? I appreciate all your feedback.Israellopez90000 (talk) 14:22, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

I see. Even still, I'm not sure your additions are really all that noteworthy for such a massive game with 20+ years of history and developments around it. Same with the merchandise - you could try to find a third party reliable sources (IGN, Eurogamer, etc) that take notes of the merch they sell...but I'm not sure how important it is to mention in an encyclopedia article, that, yeah, they sell some Final Fantasy key-chains and t-shirts or whatever. In general, the article is a Featured Article - this means its gone through some serious research, writing, and peer reviews. It doesn't mean that its perfect or unchangeable or anything, but it does mean that, barring new developments, it is largely pretty good as far as being comprehensive and complete. Sergecross73 msg me 15:10, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Yes, it was at this point that I revoked talk page access, because he "broke character/gave up the charade", as he can't both be "editing for the first time" and "wanting his account back". Draft:List of Rayman video games

would you like to help me with this list?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 17:28, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Sure, I can try to help some. I'm more of a casual Rayman fan, not a superfan or anything though, so I'm not sure how much help I'll be. (I had no idea there were like 40+ entries. I probably would have come up with around 10 or something.) You could always leave a note at WP:VG asking for assistance too, though that can go any number of ways. (People might completely take over the project, or you might be completely ignored. Or anywhere in between.) Sergecross73 msg me 17:37, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) This is another case where the table does not need split from the main series article. Rayman is very small, very little is gained by splitting the table to List of Rayman video games, except making the reader look in two places. -- ferret (talk) 17:50, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
Hmm, yeah, Ferret may be correct here. If you split the list of games off to its own article, the Rayman series article will be pretty much empty. Probably doesn't need a split yet. Sergecross73 msg me 18:13, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

We're desperately in need of someone who is interested in putting the 4-5 different lists of PlayStation 3 games back together as one. Xbox 360 is in a similar shape. 4-5 lists for different things like "on disk", "download only", "with kinetic", "with moves", etc. All could be represented in a single table format without constantly repeating all the data. -- ferret (talk) 19:22, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
I saw that in WP:VG. i'll see what I can do. its a big list.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 19:23, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
It may have to be two lists, like an (A-L) and (M-Z), for technical reasons, but it can still be (conceptually) one table format. See List of PlayStation 4 games for example. -- ferret (talk) 19:28, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for that. And no worries about the PlayStation list - that's a massive undertaking. I'm honestly pretty shocked that WP:VG members have done as much as they have with it. It can be tedious working with massive lists like those. Anyways, I'll let you know if there's any lists that could be made if I think of it. First off, I’m not a “character”. Secondly, I’m a girl. And third, when I asked for my account back, I was referring to my IP address. I thought IP addresses could substitute for accounts, because when I click on someone’s IP address, I can see their edits, just like that of a registered username-account. Alex has since told me that I was wrong to assume this. So when I asked for my account back, I just meant I needed my IP unblocked. And I was asking if I could be reinstated into the community if I stopped proxying, or editing content that got someone banned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.66.184.251 (talk) 20:30, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

If you truly are someone else, and female, then I apologize for using the wrong gender. It's hard to believe though, since Alex has made so many terrible attempts to pretend to be someone else. Regardless, the IP was blocked for a month. People can edit from the IP address when it expires. Unless you're Alex or editing by proxy of Alex - then it will keep being blocked. Because he is indefinitely blocked from editing the website. Sergecross73 msg me 20:47, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Every time you deliberately evade a block, it resets any chance of being unblocked in the future. And if you're actually Alex, it doesn't matter. The only possible path to being unblocked is to wait 6 months with zero evidence of any further block evasion or socking, then request WP:STANDARDOFFER from your original account. 23:01, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

some help

Blue Pumpkin Pie - I don't know if I have an exact link for that - I think that when I'm in such a situation, I'd (hypothetically) argue that the sourcing covers each article subject separately, lay out the sources for proof, and explain that there was enough content to warrant both articles. Usually I just lay out the number of sources discussing each, and explain or show how much prose could be extracted for each article subject. If you want, you can tell me which articles this is about, and I can look it over and give you my argument for or against it, if you like. Sergecross73 msg me 16:09, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Oh, gotcha. Usually when people ask questions about that, its because they're in a dispute over something, haha. Maybe one of my (talk page watcher)s will know it. Might be good for me to know too. Have you browsed through MOS:VG? (It used to be called WP:VG/GL.) That covers a lot of different guidance on video game article writing. (I actually just learned, in typing this, that WP:ALPHABETSOUP is a directory with a ton of helpful links actually.) I still forget them at times too. An example of Bombard

thank you for showing me WP:BOMBARD. I was eyeing out Fictional Country and List of Fictional Countries. are these examples of Bombard? it just seems to be random info patched together. None of it correlates together.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 19:45, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Well, it's kind of a subjective claim to make, but not really, in my opinion. Fictional Country only has 7 sources, so it's really more of a general "poorly written/poorly sourced" example. BOMBARD would be more like, lets say, there's a short video game article that has 20+ sources in it.
Game X is a recently announced game by Japanese video game company Sega.(IGN ref given). It was first announced at E3 2017 in Los Angeles.(GameSpot ref given). The game is very similar to the positively reviewed Super Mario Odyssey.(Eurogamer ref given) Kotaku negatively viewed the game.(Kotaku ref given).
Reflist
  1. IGN ref
  2. Gamespot ref
  3. Eurogamer ref
  4. Kotaku ref
Okay, so imagine this, only multiplied 5 times over, so there's 20 refs. On first glance, you'd think "whoa, look at all these reliable sources. It must be notable! There's 20 sources. It easily meets the WP:GNG.
However, when you look at the actual sources, you see that:
  • The IGN source only sources the fact that Sega is a Japanese video game company. It doesn't even mention "Game X".
  • The GameSpot ref only sources the fact that E3 takes place in LA. It doesn't mention the game at all.
  • The Eurogamer ref only sources the that Mario Odyssey was well reviewed. The comparison to "Game X" part is not in the source. It was written before Game X was even announced.
  • The Kotaku ref only has a sentence about the game. It says ""Game X" was available to try out at E3, but I was tired after playing 10 other demos, and and it didn't look that great, so I didn't play it."
Etc etc etc for all of the 20 sources. WP:BOMBARD is generally about creating the illusion of lots of sourcing to cover a subject, to fool people into thinking it meets the WP:GNG, and dissuade deletion discussions. It's generally seen as a dishonest thing, though I suppose it could happen accidentally too.Sergecross73 msg me 20:34, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
Ok. I was looking at the page myself and the references and none of them explicitly talk about "Fictional Country" as a real topic. Most of what sources seemed so far out there.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 20:45, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

T-Rock

Hi, would you mind userfying this for me? I'd like to see if I can clean out any hoaxed material and get that page up and running again, since the artist meets WP:MUSIC. Chubbles (talk) 04:29, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Chubbles - No problem - its been restored to User:Chubbles/T-Rock. Please do a close review of everything though. The article has just primarily been edited by the article creator, who was blocked by frequently and prolifically adding fake sources to articles. Not only that, his prose and accuracy was terrible. The article concurrently asserts that the album Throw Your Neighborhood Up was released in 1996 and 2009. How do you make a mistake that big? There's problems like that all over the place, which is why I figured it was better to WP:TNT. But if you're up to the task, go for it. Sergecross73 msg me 12:39, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Chubbles (talk) 15:56, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
Wow, you're right...the only legitimate reference on that page was the one I added. Everything besides the Billboard chart positions was a misrepresented source. It would be worse than starting from scratch. After you userfied it for me, someone drove by and salted the article again, and I'll never get that overturned for an independent rapper, so I'm back to square one. Chubbles (talk) 16:19, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
Chubbles - Yeah, that how all of that editor's articles were. Most were easier to notice because they were just stubs with a source or two in them. If you want, you can try to build a draft that proves notability, and I'd move it to the mainspace for you. I know you're an experienced editor with a good grasp on the notability requirements, so I trust you wouldn't ask me to move an article in that wasn't ready. That being said...I'm probably not the biggest worry here. With this article's troubled history, your article would likely see more scrutiny than usual. Anyways, its up to you. Move request

Serge, would you mind moving The Dark Knight (video game) to Batman: The Dark Knight (video game)? The latter is this game's official name and the one used by sources today; the current article title was a speculative title used when the game was just a rumor. JOEBRO64 23:56, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Done - Any idea how this was missed for so long? Looking at the page history, it looks like an article that never received much attention, but you noticed the naming thing in doing a big rewrite just recently? Sergecross73 msg me 01:28, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, pretty much–the name was revealed quite a while ago (2009, I think). I came across the article a little while ago, and was shocked it was in such bad shape. Reliable sources have covered the game's development a lot and it was developed by a well-known studio known for making quality games. JOEBRO64 10:26, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Can you also move the talk page? That wasn't moved with the article. JOEBRO64 10:50, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Edge video game interest?

I added a lot of info for Edge (video game). The reception and gameplay section need some work and don't feel confident on my writing skills at the moment. Want to help me with this one if you're not too busy?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 17:21, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, I can try to help a little sometime. I've never heard of the game before, so I probably will start with reception rather than gameplay. Sergecross73 msg me 17:49, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
Its that one that's partially famous for the Edge trademark dispute. the other part for just being one of the best iPhone games before quality smartphone games were available.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 15:23, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
Ah yes, I vaguely remember the lawsuit stuff, now that you mention it. Not sure I recall the game itself though. I don't usually play many phone or indie games, though I'm surprised I don't recall reading more about it when it was put on Nintendo and Sony platforms. Sergecross73 msg me 18:43, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
That also threw me off. but it was a PlayStation minis. I don't see a lot of info out there on those.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 18:51, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
Do you own the book "1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die". I heard Edge is in that book. If it is, is that something that can be added into the Reception section?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 21:59, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
I'm familiar with the book, because I once saved its article from deletion but I do not own it. It would be fair game for a reception section though. Sergecross73 msg me 01:46, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Very nice. I asked in the main project. Someone out there should have the book.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 15:59, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you again for helping me out with Edge. I think its close to becoming B-rank. I added some helpful reliable reviews in the talkpage if you want to assist me with adding them in for me. According to GameFAQS, Touchgen also had a review for it and gave it 4.5 out of 5. The problem is they've closed down since 2014. Do you know if there's a way to get proof they reviewed it and gave it that rank?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 18:26, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
nevermind. I found the archive source. So all is well. I still have a couple more things to look for. If you still want to help me though, i'm still not confident in re-wording reviews yet.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 04:38, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
