History of slavery edit

Why you get bored that much soon? We need experts like you in wikipedia for Iranian related articles. Sorry, it is long weekend here and I am out of town so I can't answer your mails swiftly. I would be happy to work with you on history of slavery. We can make an independent article on Iran. However, there is another urgent issue that has more priority. Mazandarani related articles are messed up by one user and he has pushed his original research and POVs there. I am fixing these articles and clean them up. Could you please help me on them? You may know that Mazandaran is the origin place of Bahaullah. It is not good that they are in such a bad shape. Here is the list of some of them. They are full of craps. History of Tabaristan, Hyrcania, Mazandarani Language, Mazandarani people, Tapurian calendar, Gilaki peoples, Mazandaran Province, Mazandarani cuisine and Nur (where Baha is originated), Sari, ... --Larno (talk) 20:56, 30 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Baha'u'llah's picture edit

I thought you might want to be aware that exhaustive debates (here)have transpired about whether or not the picture should be on his page. The consensus among editors here is that it will remain and be restored whenever people try to remove it for the various reasons people feel they should. I'm not intending on having that discussion here at this time, but thought I might save you some trouble and aggravation and point out that the debate has covered all the myriad of points already, and a consensus has been reached. I don't believe it's a subject still open for debate, and you might be well advised to not waste any more time worrying about it. DisarrayGeneral 00:32, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Baha'u'llah's picture edit

As a fellow Baha'i, I hope you will not be hurt when I say that I am rather disturbed by your immaturity on this question.

Just for the record, of course we don't want the Blessed Likeness displayed in this manner. I'm sure it was first put there by a non-Baha'i - possibly in all innocence. But this is not a Baha'i site, and whether it stays there or not is really is not up to us. Unless you somehow know better than the UHJ! Read what they have to say on the subject. Nor is it up to us to attempt to dictate to non-Baha'is (in any way shape or form) what they should believe.

The picture is currently at the end of the article, with what amounts to a warning to Baha'is. With the picture is a clear statement about how we feel about it. Please understand that, although this is not how we would have chosen to do it - it is none the less a reasonable compromise, which Baha'i editors on this site have fought hard for, and which is still occasionally attacked. The alternative (and the ONLY alternative) would be for it to appear at the head of the article, in the standard way for a biographical article. I suspect you would agree that would be much worse than the current situation. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 10:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I would recommend that you ask User:Jeff3000 this question. He would most certainly know the answer, as he is a prolific editor on Bahá'í-related articles. Khoikhoi 00:21, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Secthayrabe, as Baha'is of course we hold the image of Baha'u'llah in the utmost reverence, and thus we would not like the image of Baha'u'llah to be posted. However, the guidance on the reverence for the picture is for Baha'is, and does not apply to people who are not Baha'is. Note that Wikipedia is not a Baha'i website. The office of Information at the World Centre has noted that "as the creator of the site is not a Bahá'í, there is little, if anything, that can be done to address this matter." Wikipedia has no censorship policy, which is interpreted to mean that if the picture of Baha'u'llah is not included, it is tantamount to censorship, which is against policy. Thus as Wikipedia editors we have to abide by Wikipedia policy as it is not a Baha'i website. The picture is already at the bottom of the page as a manner of courtesy, and any disruption in the page would cause the image to go to the top of the page.
You can always disable the image of Baha'u'llah for yourself by following these instructions. Regards, -- Jeff3000 (talk) 15:47, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Blocking the image in Firefox edit

1. Go to the directory that stores your Mozilla Firefox profile. On Windows XP, it looks something like

 C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<random digits>.default\chrome\
where
<Windows User Name> is the name when you log into Windows XP
<random digits> is a 8-digit alphanumberic string which is random, and which Firefox uses to protect your data from hackers

2. In that directory open a file called "userContent.css" (or start a new one with that name if it does not exist).

3. In that file at the top enter this code

 img[src*="Bahaullah_from_miller"] {
       display: none !important;
 }

4. Restart firefox

That should block the image for you, and you alone Regards, -- Jeff3000 (talk) 15:47, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Map at Writing system edit

Hi Secthayrabe!

I undid your deletion of the map at Writing system, not because I think you are wrong when you wrote in your edit summary that the map is incorrect, but because I think the map is perhaps 99% correct.

There is currently a dicussion of inaccuracies in this map at talk:Writing system; I think you should bring up your concerns there.

Of course, if there are major errors in the map, it should be removed until they have been resolved - but your edit summary did not make it clear if you think that is the case.

If you delete the map again (feel free to do so!), please state at the talk page or in your edit summary what errors you've found.

You do not need to reply here or at my talk page; I'm watching talk:Writing system.

Byzantines edit

Well, I never said the Eastern Romans were exclusively Greeks. However it is a well established fact that the East Roman Empire was dominated by the Greek culture and the Greek-speaking part of its population, which had played a dominant role in the region already since Hellenistic times. Especially after it lost the Middle East to the Muslims, the BE became even more Greek in character. The BE is part of Greek history, which stretches far more back than modern Greece. The fact that the bulk of its territory lies in modern-day Turkey is completely irrelevant. The very article on the BE says "Due to the linguistic, cultural, and demographic dominance of medieval Greek,[4] it was known to many of its western European contemporaries as Imperium Graecorum, the Empire of the Greeks". Granted, the BE is not only part of Greek history, but also of Armenian, Syrian, Persian, Serbian, Bulgarian and many other histories. But, historically, the people associated with the BE par excellence have been the Greeks. If you think that a battle fought in Egypt or Palestine is a stretch to include within Greek history, let me inform you that at the time, there was a significant Greek population in Egypt and Palestine, and the Persian conquest was a catalyst in their relations with the local Semitic population, and paved the way for the Arab conquest, which ended the Hellenistic legacy in the region. P.S. please add your comments at the end of a talk page, and sign them. Thanks, Constantine 20:47, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry but what you say flouts both scholarly opinion and common sense. A Greek-speaking Empire, whose ruling class was either Greek or Hellenized, and centered in areas were Greek-speakers formed the majority, clearly belongs to Greek history, regardless of where the bulk of its territories stands today, 500 years after its fall. The BE is certainly part of Turkish history also, just as it is of Bulgaria and many other nations that interacted with it. However, prior to the 11th century, the Turks appear only on the fringes of Byz. history. There are plenty scholars who use the term "Greek" to refer to the Byzantines, and it is not a coincidence that in many universities, there are chairs on "Byzantine and Modern Greek studies". Do a search on books on the subject, whatever questions you have will be easily answered. Cheers, Constantine 18:33, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's a bit cheeky coming from a person who has not properly researched a single thing in the articles he's contributed on Byzantine history... I've been reading on Byzantine history for over ten years now, and know what the Byzantines were and what not. If you think that "Roman" is some sort of ethnonym that is incompatible with Greek identity and culture, then evidently you know nothing about Byzantine society and culture. And if you want to contradict historians like J.B. Bury, G. Ostrogorsky, Cyril Mango, Warren Treadgold and countless others when they use the term "Greek(s)" or "Byzantine Greek(s)" alongside "Roman(s)" to describe the Empire and the majority of its inhabitants, then you're free to express your own thoughts on the subject, provided they're backed up by proper sources. Until you do that, I'll stop trying to convince you... It is you who need to do your homework, I'm afraid. Cheers, and take care. Constantine 12:18, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! edit

Nice to meet you, I see that you have a very interesting user page, and I was wondering if you (as a proffessor) can help me with the issue which I last signed my name on the talk page of the Battle of Opis, recently ChrisO and his others have been creating disputes over disputed translations and not really staying on their own words, so I was just wonder if you agree with me, if you go to its talk page read the section titled "A new set of translations 2". Please reply on my talk page, and let me know if you can handle this dispute I'm having. Currently I am outnumbered 5:1 but I am trying to be nice in presenting much of my evidence, they either have an agenda against Persian culture and Cyrus the Great, or can not use common sense. So please tell me if your for or against of what I say on that talk page. Thank you very very much.--Ariobarza (talk) 11:40, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Ariobarza talkReply

The dispute is this;
  • ChrisO thinks that Cyrus invaded Babylon in September-October 539 BC, wheras normal history and evidence says that he began his march in winter 540 BC, and resumed his march in February 539 BC, after he was delayed at the Tigris river for a couple of months.
  • And he denies even if he was delayed at the Tigris, that Cyrus ever fought a battle at the Tigris while cuneiform evidence suggests it, with a few lines missing, 4/6 translations by the good historians on the subject welcome the idea, three of which totally say that he did fight a battle in February 539 BC at the Tigris river. Even some of Herodotus' Histories, and Xenophons' Cyropaedia writings say that there was an earlier battle than the last battle and the capture of Babylon in October, when Cyrus conquering Babylonia, and being called king in February 538 BC.

ChrisO (and others that he recruited) denies all the evidence, he says I do wishfull thinking and it is original research, when in fact, most of the sources available actually agree with me (with the main guy who is [A.T. Olmstead] a renown historian of Persia, which wrote and his students updated after his death the famous book, which is titled, History of the Persian Empire), but that is not the point. He lacks a common sense approach to things, and is very strict, I have trouble editing on Wikipedia, because I know ChrisO is going to come out of the dark and blow things of little value, totally out of poportion. When you go on the Opis page, go to its archives in talk, and look at how a translation dispute which I had no real stance on, almost got a lot of people in trouble, I was called a nationalist, and threatened. But good thing the dispute was sorta settling and things are a little back to normal.

So their you go, sorry if I flooded you with this problem, but you can find the best evidence for my case in the talk page of Battle of Opis, in the section titled "A new set of translations 2" (as I have already said above), read that message from top to bottom, it is the best. And finally I thank you dearly for reading this message, with best regards, goodbye now.--Ariobarza (talk) 16:54, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Ariobarza talkReply

Please calm down edit

Just because some IP posted an offensive message to you, doesn't mean that it was me. So far, I've always contacted you in a straightforward manner, as a registered user, just as I conduct all my interaction with Wikipedia and its users, and I certainly don't intend to begin hiding behind anonymous edits now. Indeed, I find the fact that you linked this incident to me most curious. There are plenty of idiots on the web, as you should well know (this incident just proves it), but I certainly am not in the habit of posting offensive messages just like that. Constantine 18:34, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eh? What exactly do you mean? If you refer to the fact that you did indeed as an IP user post messages, vandalize my homepage, etc., you've practically admitted it was you already... As for the message I left when you said you would leave, I did this to clarify my legitimate objections to the assessing of the Persian war elephants article as a GA or B class, and in order to encourage a potentially valuable contributor to WP (namely YOU) not to leave, but stay around and learn how to do things around here. I have far better things to do than engage in a childish tit-for-tat exchange of insults, and anonymously at that. So far I think I have been courteous and honest to you, even though we have had different views on certain things, and I don't intend to change that any time soon. Constantine 18:55, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Final comments edit

... in order to put this sad story behind us... Firstly, you say I was the "only suspect". I reiterate that I don't think that my previous behaviour has indicated any tendency to insult you. At every point I've disagreed with you, I've done so openly and with arguments. Anyway... Secondly, I do not have a problem with you, personally. I quite like Iranians and have great respect for their history. What I don't like is groundless POV-pushing and including (deliberately or not) false information in articles. That's why I advised you to do proper research and include the sources you checked up in your articles, and I would do the same whether you were a Greek or a Neptunian... If I have appeared harsh, sorry, but I only meant it as advice by someone who has a bit more experience here... Cheers, and goodbye for now. Constantine 20:49, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your move of Zoroastrian eschatology edit

Your move of the Zoroastrian eschatology to a Baha'i named page is definitely vandalism, and is also completely not neutral. Zoroastrian belief in their eschatology is quite different that how Baha'is interpret it, and renaming the page and removing of the content of the page is insulting to Zoroastrians, as well to as to any academic. Please refrain from pushing your POV on an encyclopedia. Regards, -- Jeff3000 (talk) 22:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome edit

You're welcome. I'm glad you liked the changes. I don't know much about the subject, but an expert has said he would look at the article this weekend. So hopefully that will bring more insight to the article. It's a bit complicated because the topic includes various ancient empires, the Persian people, Persia, and then Iran (which is a nation that has not existed for very long as it is presently defined). So for example Timur seems to hve been very brutal, as you state, and yet adopted some Persian customs. So did slavery under his reign mean there was slavery in Iran? Or was this an example of the enslavement of Iran? I don't know. Cheers. Thank you for your comment. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:57, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

History of Slavery in Iran article edit

Would you care to weigh in on the discussion on the History of slavery in Iran article's talk page? Another editor has taken exception to that article including Iran in the Ottoman Empire and to a discussion of sexual slavery. If you know some other people with expertise in this area I'd like to get some more opinions on the matter. Thanks. ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:09, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cipher edit

I have been reading some books & found out some new codes & ciphers. There is one which replaces every vowel with the following letter in the alphabet, all visible vowels are spces & avisible spaces are random & only mislead. For example " I am a professer" becomes " Jb ma be prp fffss fr ". Jastcaan (talk) 13:25, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
