List of tallest buildings in Christchurch

Hi Schwede66, I am from Christchurch too and have added 10 buildings to your list. It is a great article be good to get it finished there are a few more to add and update after all demos have been competed. CHCBOY (talk) 09:01, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Good work! What I like to do with new articles is to nominate them at Wikipedia:Did you know, where new content is featured on Wikipedia's homepage for a few hours. There are a few hurdles to overcome before it is eligible:

• The article needs at least 1500 bytes of prose (currently at 800, but all that is required is to write a bit of text around the topic, which is easy to achieve).
• The article needs to be suitably referenced. That'll be the hard part to do. You've added a lot of detail and if you could state your sources, that would be great. I'll do some work on that so that you can see what's required. Don't worry about the formatting of the references; if you just add the source in some form, I can come along and tidy things up. Ideally, there should be at least one reference for each line item, and at least one reference per paragraph of text.

Yes, you right. The hard bit is getting the refs for each building. I remember them getting built one by one and I know the name of the builder(s) and sometimes architect(s) for each too. But finding suitable refs for them some from the eighties and earlier will be very tough as no internet back then. But will try. CHCBOY (talk) 20:18, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Good on you. Let's not regard this as 'my' article. If anything, it is ours. Let's see whether we can turn it into something great. And if a few things remain unreferenced, well, so be it. Would the problem be solved by moving the article to Trial of Thomas Hogg? If the man himself is not notable, the bizarre trial must be, right? Odeon Theater in Tuam Street, Christchurch

Hi, not sure I'm doing this right, in fact I'm pretty sure I'm not, but I wanted to point out an inaccuracy in your article about the Odeon Theater. It's not a biggie, but you mention it was demolished in September 2012. I've just walked past there and it's still standing in February 2013. Yes, you are doing this right. Thanks for prodding me. Demolition of the Odeon was in full swing when I wrote the article, but they just stopped. The front of the building is still standing. I read subsequently that somebody wanted to save that part of the building, but couldn't find the exact reference again. Anyway, I've updated the article. Schwede66 18:45, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Obit file

Hi Schwede; I think you are going to have to load the Brittan obit either onto your talk page, user page, or the Joseph Brittan user page. I'm afraid if you don't, the file will be marked for deletion. At least this has been my experience. That's not the issue. Any image file that is not incorporated into an article is subject to deletion for not being used. All I'm saying is that the image will need to be brought into an article or user page to keep from being deleted for "non-use." Well, I guess I'm wrong. Maybe for commons it is not an issue. I've only recently begun uploading to commons. Maybe that's just for uploading to English wikipedia, or whatever my old way was. Sorry for the mis-information. By the way, for now I am watching your talk page since we are carrying on this conversation. I will eventually remove your page from my watch list when the Joseph Brittan matter becomes somewhat resolved. My only interest in this issue is to help if I can, but otherwise will be happy to have you and Syne resolve the details. Pacific Tower

Edit summaries are not the place for snide remarks (see WP:CIVIL - Do's and Dont's). I am working on adding designations to thousands of articles using the list pages already created by others. Completely erroneous errors such as the one you were referring to are often made as the result of misdirected links. A simple look at the "WhatLinksHere" would have made that obvious to you. I catch some and miss some, that happens. Instead of leaving rude comments directed at other editors (see Identifying Incivility), please just fix simple errors like these. Hi, I'm aware of the rule of copying things in the lead. The reason I moved the statement up to the lead and did not include it in the body of the article was to satisfy DYK Rule D2 that every paragraph should have at least one citation. Edward Brenchley Bishop

Hi Schwede66, I have had a quick look via Ancestry for Edward. Found him on the Electoral role for 1853 living at Somerfield Farm Canterbury Christchurch with Frederick Augustus Bishop. both yeomen living on a freehold estate valued at £50. They are both still living there in 1861 and Charles Wellington Bishop is recorded living at the marketplace Christchurch, a storekeeper with two acres of rural land adjoining the town of Kaiapoi on the Island being part of section 321. In 1881 all three are listed plus a fourth. Charles is an accountant in Cambridge Terrace, Edward at Cramner Terrace out of business. Frederick lives with him and is a wine merchant and in addition there is a Rockford Compart Bishop at Armach St also an acountant. I have found at least one tree with 5 siblings. Apart from Charles (b.1815 d.1884) and Frederick (b.1818 d.1884), there is a Mary Ann (b.1810), Susannah (b.1812) and Emma Kate (b.1814 d.1888). Tmol42 (talk) 23:13, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Further update. Charles W Bishop was married twice. He married Mariane Alport at Islington on 13 May 1843. She died in Apr-Jun 1849 in Bermondsey, London. His second marriage was at St Mary's Islington, London on 13 Apr 1850. At the time Charles was living in Rotherfield St, Islington. Ellen his second wife's maiden name was also Alport. I guess maybe a sister to the late Marion. All three of Charles'children were therefore born with his first wife Mariane.Tmol42 (talk) 00:41, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, isn't that interesting? Susannah Bishop married Augustus James Alport (1816–1886) on 18 May 1844 at St Mary's Church, Islington, London. If you have a chance to read my draft article (since moved to mainspace) and check over the family connections, that would be great. I'm particularly interested in the parents; I extracted the info from a seriously garbled up website and had to look through the code to find their names. I haven't seen their names anywhere else as yet, so if any of the family list them (possibly with birth and death years), that would be fantastic. Have yet to work the parents into the prose, and will also include your latest info. Thanks a million. The other helpful thing would be to see whether the various Alports were indeed siblings. Yes I have your page on my watchlist. I am now a bit on an expert on the Alport family! Father of the three Alports was James Swaine Alport who was born in Stourport, Worcestershire. Married in London to Mary Ann Beck and then both went to live in Halifax Nova Scotia where they had 8 children. Another Alport sibling was Adela. She married a Charles White and remained in London, as did her brother, Sidney. Henry Rose went to live in Kent, Edward Swaine went to Monmouth in Wales, Herbert Edward went to Christchurch, NZ and Percy John ended up in South Africa. Argyles Bishop, (b.1764) Kent. He was a widower by the time he married Mary Anne Brenchley (b. 12 July 1781) Sittingbourne Kent, on 18 May 1809 at Sittingbourne. Mary Ann's father was Edward Brenchley and her mother was Mary? Found one other reference to Argyles Bishop and a distillers business here which you might find interesting. Agree, there is no genealogical evidence of him ever being married. Also the cemetary monument for EBB also includes commemorations for his sister, his brother and his brother's second(?) wife. Tmol42 (talk) 11:41, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Schwede, I have improved the Aotearoa article by adding more info re Sir George Grey, and also removed the info you added. I think it is disproportionate to give the opinion of a hobby historian just because he disputes the works of some pretty important players in New Zealand history. Hello Schwede, When I was browsing through a website I accidently found this a review of the Establishment project this can be seen here: http://www.warrenandmahoney.com/en/portfolio/the-establishment-apartments/ So I was wrong on this building height, I don't remember it being 11 levels so will put it back into the list which will bring the total to 50 (A good round figure). Yes, well, it is all very different when the boot is on the other foot. Quite all right for you to go around vandalising my edits but if someone does that to your edits then all hell breaks loose and I am threatened to be reported etc etc. What is sauce for the gander is sauce for the goose. If an item on Wiki is wrong then fair enough go ahead and correct it but don’t go deleting other people’s work just because it does not meet your personal standards or it on a topic that you know nothing about. Leave well alone. In any case my edit was referenced if you had just bothered to look instead of getting up on your high horse.
