New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023 edit

Hello Schwede66,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Scott Watson edit

Hi Schwede66. I wonder if you could take a look at this page: Murders of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope. One particular editor, Stumpy2121, is editing the page as if he owns it. See these comments on the Talk page. If you look at the History page, you see he has made hundreds of edits and contests every single edit that I try to make. For the most part he does not allow anyone else's edits to stand.

On 3 January, he made about 100 edits and then posted on the Talk [page] (item 6) that this page should be locked. He clearly does not want anyone else to edit. Dubiousources (talk) 20:38, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Great World MRT station edit

Hi. Just noticed your comment about the Great World MRT station. I did initially identify the stub tag and was going to remove once I had fully completed the review. I forgot to remove it whilst I was updating the article to GA status and closing the review. Apologies about this and thanks for bringing it to my attention. HoHo3143 (talk) 10:28, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

User:HoHo3143, you don't have to wait until the GA review is done before you remove a stub tag. It should go long before a GA review even starts as presumably, the article is well beyond a stub. Schwede66 10:30, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
The user must've built the article up straight from a stub and nominated for GA status. I've done this a few times before- expanding an article from 4-5 sentences to GA worthy length. Thanks for the feedback, and in the future I'll make sure to remove the tag first so I don't forget. HoHo3143 (talk) 13:06, 21 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

DYK? edit

Hi. Would you perhaps be interested in promoting (and taking credit for promotion) of this to DYK? I drafted the just-published article Mazi Melesa Pilip. The hook I had in mind was:

"… that Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian-born, former Israeli paratrooper, Orthodox Jewish mother of seven is being discussed as a possible replacement if US Congressman George Santos steps down?" 2603:7000:2143:8500:BC63:ED51:C05C:8001 (talk) 18:05, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry but no. We don’t feature people on DYK during political campaigns. Schwede66 18:09, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
There's no political election campaign. Santos has not stepped down. The DYK guidelines apparently say that "it is fine to cover topics of ... political interest," though not during "election campaigns." 2603:7000:2143:8500:BC63:ED51:C05C:8001 (talk) 18:13, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Nah, "is being discussed" is all it needs to sink this. Schwede66 18:16, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
What about ...

"… that Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian-born, former Israeli paratrooper, Orthodox Jewish mother of seven was elected a Republican legislator in New York's Nassau County Legislature?" 2603:7000:2143:8500:BC63:ED51:C05C:8001 (talk) 18:20, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

If there’s even a hint of a campaign, I won’t touch it, irrespective of the hook content. Sorry. Schwede66 18:27, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. If anyone else looking at this discussion has additional thoughts, that would be of interest. Thanks to Schwede, and all. 2603:7000:2143:8500:BC63:ED51:C05C:8001 (talk) 18:44, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Lucien Brouha edit

Dear Schwede66. I think we had a litlle holiday from the GA. Perhaps we needed it. I hope you still want to continue. I think we are not far from the end. Haven't we made some good progress? Please, tell me freely what you think? Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 20:41, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'll get back onto it. Haven't received an answer yet on status of the conference but that shouldn't hold up progress on the other outstanding issue. Schwede66 23:45, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Senior Whip (ship?) edit

Hello @Schwede66, as for the edits here, I still do believe these are vandalism unless there is something I missed. I've had a look through MOS:JOBTITLES, but I believe that the title is "senior whip" versus "senior ship". Yes, the lowercase senior is correct according to MOS, but "ship" just looks like someone trolling, but please correct me if I'm mistaken. I'm not from New Zealand, but based on some basic searches and a review of the article, I do not believe that "ship" has anything to do with the article. TheManInTheBlackHat (Talk) 21:53, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

TheManInTheBlackHat, haha, didn't spot the "ship". I'd say it's a spelling mistake; "s" and "w" are both typed with the ring finger (if you touch-type). That's an easy mistake to make. Otherwise, the edit was clearly an improvement over what had been there before. I've fixed that spelling mistake. Schwede66 22:14, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Talk: Main page and MOS:JOBTITLES edit

Hi, thanks for your response on my main page error post. The capitalisation of prime minister was not something I wanted changed- just a typo. I've seen it capitalised on the site before but now I've read the guidelines I'll know in future. Cheers Aubernas (talk) 11:03, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation and primary topics edit

Hi, many thanks for sorting out Robert Poulin. I've done a bit of tidying on Udûn, a Tolkien topic that was completely uncontroversial until a recent streaming episode took that name. I've made a dab page and some redirects, but am not sure whether the episode page should be treated as primary or just as one of the options, i.e. it'd be Udûn (episode) or something of that sort. It has presumably got many hits in the past few weeks, and those will presumably subside as newer shinier models come along to tempt the consumer. We can just leave it as suddenly-become-primary or treat it more even-handedly. Whatever you think best! Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:57, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Chiswick Chap. Given how much attention a prominent film is likely to receive, I guess the episode will take the podium of primacy. It’s probably right the way it is set up now but it will certainly become clearer as time goes on. You can always propose a formal move request if you think it should be changed. Personally, I quite readily move things when there is clarity (like with Robert Poulin). But when it’s not that clear, going the formal way is best. Schwede66 18:50, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

The other thing that is useful to do when you upgrade to start class is to remove any stub tags. Which forces you to look at the article, which is a good thing to do, JarrahTree. Schwede66 15:15, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your GA nomination of Lucien Brouha edit

The article Lucien Brouha you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Lucien Brouha for comments about the article, and Talk:Lucien Brouha/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Brouha passed edit

Dear Schwede, you have certainly seen the news. I had forgotten to check for copyright violations. I do not believe that there are any, but I ran Earwig in "Copyvio search" mode, just to see. The highest similarity was 14%, which was for the Liber memorialis. I was astonished that it found this, but it seems that Earwig searches through the references in the article. It found 0% for https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02701367.2013.784724, which is Vangrunderbeek, which is astonishingly low. When I change to "URL comparison" mode with this same URL the comparison shown seems to show that it can read very little of the text at the URL. Do you understand what Earwig can and can't do? - Different subject. I have nominated the article Antoine Hamilton for GA. Would you be ready to do a quid pro quo at some time? I realise that you might be too busy. Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 20:09, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Johannes Schade, yes, I saw that. Thanks heaps. I'll leave a nice message on your talk page to give you some recognition for the work you've put into this. And no, I don't fully understand how Earwig works. With regards to Vangrunderbeek, I assume that it evaluates the abstract rather than the journal article (at least for that URL). My next project is to write an article from scratch; I've been waiting for an opportunity since December! After that, we'll see. Schwede66 00:37, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Valpy-Fulton-Jeffreys family tree edit

Hi Schwede66, The family tree in Category:Valpy-Fulton-Jeffreys family needs an extra branch (Charles Jeffreys' daughter Elizabeth Georgiana Jeffreys now has an article), but I can't make head nor tail of the coding. Any chance you could add a link? Thanks in advance, Grutness...wha? 11:51, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I like a coding challenge (sometimes) so I had a go at this.-gadfium 18:59, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Haha, awesome. Thanks for sorting this, Gadfium. I've struggled with the code on occasion, too, but it's tedious to say the least, Grutness. What I usually do is to ping Paora and he sorts this in no time. Maybe there's an editor for these tables, or it's straightforward using the visual editor (which I never use). Paora, are you coming to the Wellington Wikicon? If so, could you please show me what you do to put me out of my miserable coding struggle?
Grutness, do you have the Wikicon on your radar? The other three of us were all in Hokitika at the inaugural Wikicon and it was a brilliant weekend. If it's not on your radar yet, I very much recommend that you come along. Schwede66 23:21, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the coding Gadfium! No, I've not been to a wikicon. Mind you, I'm pretty much tied to Dunedin due to family health issues, but if one ends up down this part of the country... Grutness...wha? 02:23, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
That has indeed been talked about. Stay tuned, Grutness. Schwede66 04:00, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

GA Notice edit

GA Notice
Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I am glad to be reviewing the article Abel Tasman Monument in which you've been a major contributor, and has been nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. @Schwede66 Looking forward to review this interesting article on a public monument in New Zealand! I hope to have the review ready within the next seven days and will keep you posted in case of unexpected delays. Also, here is the correct review link, which is not displaying properly in the template: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Abel_Tasman_Monument/GA1 Thanks so much. Ppt91 (talk) 19:53, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Ppt91. I've fixed the links in the Template; they were just missing the trailing digit. I'll have a super-busy patch coming up from this Thursday for 8 days so if you are getting this done swiftly, I won't have time to put substantial time into it during those days. Afterwards, I should have heaps of capacity. Paora, you might want to watchlist that review page, too. Schwede66 23:08, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Schwede66 Thanks for fixing the link. And no worries, having more time will actually be fine with me! I'll keep you posted as I am moving along. Ppt91 (talk) 23:13, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Could you please explain to me why my photo has been protected? Trade (talk) 03:08, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Trade, discussion at Errors (since removed; doesn't get archived so you have to look at the page history). I've created options for other admins to pick one of three photos as there was a desire to replace the cyclone GIF that had been running for four days. I protected another cyclone photo plus two derailment photos so that there are choices. Photos need to be protected before they can be shown on the main page. Photos and videos are always good to have; the more the better. That's how you build an encyclopedia, after all. I have no particular interest in the derailment; I just look after the main page and deal with Error discussions as they arise. Schwede66 03:52, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dual naming edit

If a town has a dual name, should said dual name be written when the town is mentioned in a non-historial context? For context, I'm referring to Riverton / Aparima here. Michael60634 (talk) 04:17, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Michael60634, what's been decided on this is documented at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (New Zealand). That talk page, or alternatively Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board, would be the place to seek broader input if new things need sorting out. Schwede66 05:00, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm aware of WP:NCNZ. I was asking because I updated the article to use the current name of Riverton / Aparima, but an IP editor reverted it. I asked you since you are both an admin, and active on NZ related pages. Michael60634 (talk) 05:14, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see you've reverted that edit. Good on you. Say if the IP insists and I'll start weighing in. Schwede66 05:54, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

ITN edit

Natürlich I realize the number "missing" (per AlJazeera) was/is uncertain, but reports characterize this as a very major storm, and it seems at least possible that the toll may rise beyond "dozens." Time will tell. – Sca (talk) 14:10, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

It’s a major event alright, Sca, with damage equivalent to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. I’m unaffected by the cyclone but lived in Christchurch Central City for the earthquakes, hence I have a lot of sympathy for what people are going through. Schwede66 18:04, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Assistance requested for Te Rapa cogeneration article edit

Hi Schwede66,

I saw on your user page that you're currently on holiday, so I don't expect an immediate response.

I'm working on the Te Rapa cogeneration article and was hoping you could help me find additional sources for the lead. So far, I've only found one report and couldn't find anything else useful on Google. Most of the search results are about the plant's planned closure.

If you could take a look and provide some feedback whenever you have a chance, that would be great.

I think the article turned out really well; I hope you do, too. And how funny regarding the monument status. Calling them was certainly a good idea (and good research commitment). I guess one sometimes forgets these days how useful a simple phone call can be, assuming that everything should be online? That's definitely the case with me. Anyway, I am happy that they're now more motivated to fix the administrative glitch. Please do keep in touch about future articles (art and otherwise)! :-) Ppt91talk 03:06, 16 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

However, the article was created by another username (sock?), who did not appear to be blocked (yet), nor was there any link between the two accounts on the WP:SPI page. I started to look up the user but am having difficulty seeing any more info as the history of the page is now gone, but I did not see any evidence that the user (username:YIEW ??) was a banned/blocked account. Never mind, I see the user (YIEWI) is globally banned on meta following a CU on bn:wp. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 02:20, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I had the exact same problem and it took me a while to figure that a global block doesn't show with the tools / setup that I'm using, Loopy30. Schwede66 02:45, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Accessing a document in a NZ university library edit

Hi Schwede66, I hope this finds you well. Not strictly related to Wikipedia editing, but adjacent: I'm looking at the early nuclear-free new zealand movement (ie 1957-1965) as part of a research project for my University studies in the US. The No Bombs South of the Line pamphlet is cited in a number of places, but seems to only be held at the University of Waikato Library. I've emailed their library, but was wondering if you had any thoughts on the chances that I could get a scan of the pamphlet from them, or any other paths I might pursue? I'm not familiar with the NZ University system, unfortunately. Warm regards, Eddie891 Talk Work 14:22, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

All is well apart from waking up far too early, Eddie891. Our fellow editor DrThneed has a project going where she liaises with the all the university librarians. Maybe she can put you in touch with the right person. Schwede66 14:32, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello! Well emailing Waikato library is the best thing, but if you don't get a response from them I'm happy to try through other channels. It's only one sheet so shouldn't be onerous for them to scan if they can locate it! If I was closer I'd go and do it myself but unfortunately I'm on the wrong island. Ping me again @Eddie891 if the library don't get back to you in a reasonable timeframe. Cheers DrThneed (talk) 20:25, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
