Awesome edit

baba damet garm. The article on Kiarostami was excellent. Some of it was way above my head since I am not a film expert. My only suggestion is to add a list of films produced by Kiarostami. --alidoostzadeh 04:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Abbas Kiarostami edit

Hi there! I'm very busy with work right now, but I'll see what I can do if you're not in too much of a hurry :) At first glance the article looks great—I'll read it more thoroughly and comment as soon as I have the chance. Best wishes, Fvasconcellos 21:32, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK. I've read the article, and placed it on hold. It is very good, but there are still a few problems, which I've mentioned here. I hope you're not put off by my remarks—this really is a nice article, and neither far from GA nor FA. Best, Fvasconcellos 00:54, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi again! I've had another read, and I think the article is up to GA standard now, so I've passed it. There are still a few very minor problems, which I'll get to later if you'd like me to, but nothing serious. When you're ready for FA, let me know and I'll see how it's doing :) Best of luck and happy editing, Fvasconcellos 10:46, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kiarostami length edit

To me, the best option sounds like splitting out the "Cinematic style" section, although I'd prefer an article name such as Cinematic style of Abbas Kiarostami. The section in the main Abbas Kiarostami article could then be condensed to provide an overview of his style. I made a sample edit in my Sandbox to this effect: leaving in a good three or four paragraphs for the overview section, it cut the article down to 40 kB—much better.

I don't think rewriting the article is a very good idea—you could lose a lot of good information! Let me know what you think, and remember, there is no deadline :) Fvasconcellos 17:43, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I'll have a look as soon as I can. Be careful, though—the paragraphs in my sandbox were random!! I'm sorry if you got the wrong idea about that.
54 kB is definitely within FA range. If you are not in a hurry, I recommend you ask User:SandyGeorgia to have a look: she's a great editor and has lots of experience reviewing FAs. She is traveling until early March though, so she might not be able to look at the article too soon.
I won't edit the article much anymore in case anyone thinks there is a conflict of interest (since I passed it as a GA), but I can copyedit a little. Fvasconcellos 20:17, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Great, good luck! I don't think you'll meet much opposition—I've been reading the article again, and I think it's definitely up to standard. Best, and good luck with your next endeavors, Fvasconcellos 21:12, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey great job with the condensing and the new page I am glad the full work wasn't deleted. It looking great!! I told you the article was way better than one or two were portraying!! Its status has gone up amazing quickly!! All our hard work will pay off on this I'm sure. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 17:42, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Persian transliteration edit

Well, I suppose the best way is to get a consensus first for you edits on the talk page, and then you can implement them. If you wanted, you could also split it off from the page and create Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Persian), but such actions should not be done unilaterally. Bedrood, Khoikhoi 05:19, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I believe it is a great idea and necessary one to create Persian transliteration. I suppose we have two options here - we can either deploy David N, Mackenzie’s transliteration, which is based on his predecessors, i.e. Richelet and Jackson, which currently is the model for the pre-Islamic Iranian languages (i,e. Avestan, ol-Persian, Parthian and Sasanian Pahlavi), or Encyclopaedia Iranica. EI has number of extra constants for ح, ذ, ص, ض, ط, ظ, ع, ث and it is similar to Arabic WP:AMOS, (in Persian we do not pronounce them). I can copy the Mackenzie’s transliteration guideline here if you wish. ← ← Parthian Shot (Talk) 06:20, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Dear Sangak - I have added the Mackenzie’s transliteration in the relevant section as requested. Your endeavours is greatly admired and appreciated. Regards ← ← Parthian Shot (Talk) 07:15, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pascal's triangle edit

Dear Sangak. A while ago, there was a bit of an edit war at Pascal's triangle about inclusion of Omar Khayyam and others in the lead section. The problem is, mentioning one or two who studied the triangle before Pascal, or whom the table is named after in some languages, opens up a can of worms - how about India? Italy? The solution of leaving out the details in the lead, and including them in the history section instead, appears to have been accepted by all editors involved for quite some time, and I think it should stay that way. Hence, if you do not disagree with this, I suggest you move your contributions down to the history section, restoring the lead section to the brief version. However, it's not like you are disrupting a state of affairs resulting from a vote, form arbitration, or the like. - The lead section ideally should be a summary of the rest of the article, and hence should not include material that is not covered in more detail below. - By the way, I think the history section in Pascal's triangle is too brief and too far down in the article; any work contributing to making that section more prominent would be most welcome.--Niels Ø (noe) 15:03, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sangak; thanks for your reply. I still think "my" version of the lead (as in this version), but it's also OK listing those four countries as you did. Anyway, let's move to the article talk page; I really should have started there anyway.--Niels Ø (noe) 15:22, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Images in Abbas Kiarostami article edit

Hi again Sangak! I see you've put Abbas Kiarostami up for FAC—good luck. Would you mind adding a fair use rationale to the pages of images used in the article (such as film posters and book covers), as described here? The page provides some examples, but you can add it in your own words if you prefer. Describe "why" you think they should be used in the article (e.g., the article is about the director, the images illustrate his work, this is important for the article). Fair use images have been receiving a fair amout of criticism in FAC, so thing should be as above board as possible. Thanks, Fvasconcellos 17:33, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

As for "Cinematic style", I'm not sure—I'll ask at the GA talk page. Fvasconcellos 18:39, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah, OK—I'll ask later then, when I have time, just to make sure :) There's probably no hurry, though. Best, Fvasconcellos 18:48, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

To be honest I don't think its quite ready for a FA yet -it atill needs to be written better but I definately think it is up to an A-class article at the moment. When I have time I'll try to make it read more professionally for the top level. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 17:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, we will see. It was already assessed close to A-class two weeks ago. Over the last two weeks it has been copyedited and improved significantly. see here I changed the article based on a long list of comments during peer review and GA assessment. The size of the article was redcuced from 74 kb to 54 kb. Three other copyeditors copyedited the article from top to the end. It is now quite close to FA, as many told me. It has been written in a professional language. Finally, an FA is an end. One can even improve an FA. Sangak 20:06, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm so sorry to have missed your message in the mess that's my talk page. I've been quite busy in the past week, but will take a look at the article when I've more time. No problem. One idea I've gotten through this exercise is that long articles such as this (how did you write it anyway??) could be broken up into sections for copyedits, with one editor responsible for just a couple of sections. This way you can probably attract more help. Xiner (talk, email) 20:05, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. -seems to be going very well the nomination process. But do you think the paragraph on Kiarstami's digital micro cinema is very important? Even if condensed I feel it should be part of the main article. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 20:29, 27 February 2007 (UTC) Yes if it is going ok there is no reason to add the paragraph -its just i thought it was an important part of his work and should be at least a small section in the article - I like that image as well. I really wish there wasn't any restrictions on page size in my view the more information and detail the better! However better not have it over 60kb. All the best! Ernst Stavro Blofeld 20:39, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:your note edit

I guess the only thing you can do is request that he cite his sources. Also see WP:ATT. Khoikhoi 10:45, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Some people have commented that the background/personal life section is too basic -I agree. Here is some important info mimissing:

Kiarostami was one of the few directors that remained in Iran after the 1979 revolution, when many of his fellow Iranian filmmakers and directors fled to the west, and believes that it was one of the most important decisions of his career. He has stated how his permanent base in Iran and national identity has consolidated his ability as a filmmaker:

"When you take a tree that is rooted in the ground, and transfer it from one place to another the tree will no longer bear fruit," he says. "And if it does, the fruit will not be as good as it was in its original place. This is a rule of nature. I think if I had left my country, I would be the same as the tree."

Abbas caused controversy in his native Iran at the 2005 Cannes festival in France, when in accepting his award he exchanged kisses with French movie star Catherine Deneuve. The ordeal sparked a significant upset back at home, where such an action between an unmarried man and woman verges on a punishable crime. As a result Kiarostami chose to stay out of the country for several few months until the contoversy settled down.

This infomration is very important Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:16, 28 February 2007 (UTC) Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:16, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree totally - if I find the source can you reference that new bit of info. The kiss if anything should go in the controversy section? The bit about his Iranian identity after the revolution is very important though Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:25, 28 February 2007 (UTC) Here is the source for that revolution info. Please add the referencing cheers. I have left the section on the kiss in the talk page for now -it is the same source. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

wel done I have also found a tiny bit of info about his love of crayoning!! -that looks really good I have written this into the intro. It is now looking about complete I think - but I still think the section should be named Background rather than personal life. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:40, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think its sourced already but if you want to add another citation it is the same dource as the revolution info. Its just about completed. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:41, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

One thing though -professionaly all quotes should be set out like As I said it is now complete. As I just said it is now complete.

Ah as long as the link is there it doesn't realy matter - I take it his son's work isn't all that impressive? OK thats fine. One last thing. I'm not ahppy about the image of him in 2004 in the 1970s. If I keep the picture the same size (I relaise about the no px thing now) I think it would look better in the 2000s section on the bottom left. If I show you you can revert it if you disagree Ernst Stavro Blofeld 15:24, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've put his son in the assistant section with a note. I did a preview of the moved poster but I actually prefer it as it is - I am happy with the layout now. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 15:33, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

well so is Iranian cinema and the renassiance and his assitant mentioned in the article but they should still be linked its fine now -he is related after all. Is there something about his son I dont' know about? - it seems you have a dislike or aversion to him. What is his story? Ernst Stavro Blofeld 15:36, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bedil Dehlavi edit

There's no doubt that there have been recent works in Iran on Bedil's poetry, in the last 5 to 10 years. By saying that Bedil is more famous in Afghanistan than in Iran, is that in Afghanistan Bedil has a status like that of Hafiz and Sanayee next to Iranians, and it has the same status as Rumi and Hafiz for Afghans; used in everyday life and largely used in Ghazal Music. The only reason is the language style of Hindi poetry and its expressions, which differs widely from the Iraqi school (western Persia).

Iranians state that Bedil's poetry contains a lots of Gholo in its Tashbehat and Iste'ara, and of course is true. But for Afghans, it adds more in is delicateness. So what I have written, was meant to express the status of Bedil among common people and not how much work and researches done.Ariana310 10:05, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You can also have a look at THIS.

In contrary, I removed your part of sentence (he is respected in Afghanistan and Tajikistan), because he is respected equally all over the Iranian Cultural Continent as being a great Persian Poet and founder of Indian school.Ariana310 10:13, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, no doubt much researches done on Bedil's works from 1990's onward in Iran, since Afghanistan suffered from civil war and lost the majority of its great scholars. Remember, I did not say anything about the researches and works, only about his familiarity among people.Ariana310 10:26, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, you are calling it a game?! Neither, I would like to start such a thing.

  • I did not use any personal feeling as saying "in the hearts of Afghans". May I call it your personal understanding?
  • I never said that His language is unaccessible to Iranian scholars and Iranian people, did I? I said: "his language is not easily comprehensible for Iranians (do not include personally the Iranian schoars) as the language of Hafiz, Sadi, Khayam or others". I see a great difference between "unaccessible" and "incomprehensible".
  • Saa'eb Tabrezi is also a poet of Indian school, brings no importance in your point. And for your second point, Iranians heard more of Bedil than Saa'eb, I strongly disagree.

You are insisting on researches and works done on Bedil in Iran, and I have no objection. I agree. And you have already added it in the article. So I do not see any further argument. Thanks Ariana310 10:44, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Playing with words?! .... and that would be in your arguments?! Should I take "lazy" and "stupid" as the same meaning?Ariana310 10:52, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

No negative intention dear Sangak. It was just to give an example.Ariana310 10:59, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also your argument leads to the following: "the language of Sadi, Hafiz, Rumi, etc are not easily comprehensible for Afghans as of Bidel." - That's your personal conclusion from my statements!! Sorry, I am done with this nonobjective discussion. Ariana310 11:08, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey very good work on those directors -surely your're not going to attempt to feature those too? The proposal has not yet had a single oppose so it is 28/28. If user Xiner decides an oppose then it will become 28/29. A comment is a neutral comment - not an oppose. How are you today? You still haven't told me where in the world you live. Do you actually live in Iran? Ernst Stavro Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 13:52, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I posted a comment, not an oppose. The article's going through and I've no interest in stopping it. I just wanted to make my views known so that hopefully I can gain consensus for something that I think needs to be done. Thanks again for your hard work. Xiner (talk, email) 14:33, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi yes I initally set up a template but I dleetded it when I found out how to programme the signiature into my preferences -this is wh ythe name disappered because it was from the template!! Now is does it automatically Ernst Stavro Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 14:47, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

There we go my new signature Sir Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 14:50, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes Xiner agrees with me that it is a comment not an oppose. Don't woory about it I think he is concerned about the length but to cut it down to just sentences will definately affect quality. To create a personalized signature copy my User:Ernst Stavro Blofeld/Sig and create one on User:Sangak/Sig. Do this first. Sir Blofeld "I've been expecting you" 14:59, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have created one for you . Now go into my preferences at the top of the page and add put this in the signature

Put this in subst:User Sangak/Sig and then place a {{ }} around it in the signature in your preferences. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:14, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done it ? I'll stick with the blue I think -yours looks good in purple -as you know I am strongly affected by colours and imagery so it helps to brighten up even the most dull of talk pages! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:16, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

only copy this subst:User Sangak/Sig -you don't need all the mess around it. then just put a {{ }} around it in your preferences -ignore all the // .. ,,. font details!!!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:24, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry put this in tiny fault you need to put a : after User: Try this subst:User:Sangak/Sig with a {{ }} ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:38, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Missing Kiarostami films from the List of Iranian films edit

One thing that needs doing is to put all of Abbas's films into the List of Iranian films many of his important films are missing from this main list ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:52, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Need clarification edit

Hi! I am in the League of Copyeditors and started a copyedit of Science and technology in Iran, but need clarification on the usage of Persia vs. Iran. Please see the article's talk page and reply. (I think this will also apply to your request for copyedit for Persian literature.) Thanks! Galena11 19:33, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bedil Discussion edit

Dear Sangak, My apologize for any personal attacks during the discussion. Nonetheless, I was to quit the discussion because it seemed to me a very simple point on what we were wasting our time. Anyhow, I saw that you edited the article, I will go through it and if it was necessary, I will edit a little bit keeping the same neutral point. Again, my excuses. Bye. Thank you, that's very kind! My part wasn't that great, you know—it is indeed an excellent article. Best wishes for your future edits, Fvasconcellos 13:14, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wow, I popped by to take a look the article and see that it was already promoted. That's cool! You're a brilliant editor. I can see you've put a lot of effort in improving Kiarostami, and it really paid off. :-) Btw, your new fancy signature looks adorable (I love the colour). Cheers! Congratulations! You and the article deserve it. Xiner (talk, email) 14:32, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Congrats! You did a hell of a job with the article and I'm glad to see Kiarostami gets some good treatment here. Hope to see him on the Main Page soon! Tombseye 20:33, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Remember though we can't expect to see Abbas on the front page immediately. The fact he is a featured article now has made me content enough. I know you have been working on the Cinema of Iran - I reckon this should be written into a featured article. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 21:42, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The only thing is its a shame that articles like Sohrab Shahid-Saless are extremely poor - I am going to work on this a bit ok? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 21:50, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see you started the article its good that it exists but I am going to work on this set myself another article to write!! Feel free to help out ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 21:53, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Iranian wikiproject edit

Hey,

I saw that you have been active in the Iranian wikiproject. I think it definately needs organising a little so I decided to make a to do list. I am still a bit confused by all the other articles currently there. I think we should put it all in the new to do thing and just make sure everyone knows about it and watches it and keeps it uptodate. I think there might be other to do lists too but I am not sure if they are up to date or not..

ps. Keep up the great work man! --Rayis 18:58, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sohrab Shahid-Saless -its a start ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 22:14, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have added a cinematic style and awards - I will add a table tomorrow to Sohrab Shahid-Saless. If I can make it a B-class thats a task well done ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 22:25, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have now worked on Sohrab Shahid-Saless, Bahram Bayzai and Bashu the Little Stranger -are you interested in any of these? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 15:28, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

THanks! We now have a "Mini Abbas" on the go with Bahram Bayzai -it was a stub about 40 minutes ago!! I have just added a new section alos on Reception. Of course it needs copy editing but rememebr this was the case with Abbas!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 16:39, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Next one to receive the treatment will be Parviz Kimiavi. OK? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 16:51, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Iranian cinema template has been created in accordance to other countries-this template will go at the bottom of every page related to Iranian cinema including all of the people in the industry. I hope you like it!

♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 20:40, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well I aim to add a template eventually for each country so it connects every article related to the cinema of that country. It is very useful for connecting everything together. I hope the Iranian New Wave icon in the box is appropriate ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 20:54, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

As it grows I would like it to become like this with the decades and also the iranian film icon

science and technology in Iran edit

Thanks for your message, and sorry I haven't responded sooner (real life was demanding too much of my attention). I'll try to copyedit the historical sections (Science in Persia) of the article today and/or the next few days. It's a good start. Overall, I have several comments:

  • Sources are very thin for the historical sections; only the batteries section has a reference.
  • It often seems like simply a list of interesting historical snippets than an overview of Persian science. The discussion of al-Tusi, for example, is entire devoted to a comparison with early-modern and modern western scientists (while leaving out his contributions of more lasting influence to astronomy).
  • In general, it needs to have less about important people and what they did (that's what biographical articles are for), and more about the way science/natural philosophy was done in Persia, the reasons it was done, the places it was done, who was paying for it, etc.

300 (film) and categories edit

Hey, thanks for the intriguing and level-headed discussion; the whole Ahmadinejad matter is very interesting, though I definitely would have argued otherwise had I taken part. Unfortunately, 300 is a highly unstable article at the moment, and other editors may see your suggestions as POV pushing (I wouldn't go so far as to say OR). I think it's very unfortunate, but it may be best to let the issue die down for a bit. I wish there were more fitting categories regarding film, because I definitely agree that the film is seen as Anti-nationalistic, and many are going to argue this point for it to be categorized this way, but people are being sensitive on both sides. CInema templates are up for deletion edit

Unbelievably a nasty user has put all of the cinema templates up for deletion. I beelive they serve a great purpose for establishing a better understanding and connection between articles. But in totla haste he has gone ahead and proposed the lot. If my hard work is deleted I swear I am leaving wikipedia for good. I am willing to limit the use of the American template but not the others.

Please leave your view at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2007 March 13 THanks ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 12:45, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
