Photos from Dakar

Hi there,

I was told about your list of required pictures and have uploaded the Russian embassy and consular house (as you will see, these aren't particularly notable buildings).

In any case, the files are here:

I leave the task of categorizing properly to you - you may also ask for them to be deleted if they don't suit your needs.

Cheers, Popo le Chien throw a bone 20:15, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Responded on your fr.wiki talk page. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 02:08, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Re

Thank you for informing me, but I removed your comment [1] because it might be interpreted as a violation of interaction ban on your part (what you suggested me to do was not a legitimate dispute resolution, but a violation of ban). No complaints from me, however. You are very welcome to delete or rename whatever I did and keep me informed about this.Biophys (talk) 21:34, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Russian embassy in Ulan Bator

I believe this to be a residence within the compound.

Here are a couple images for you, the Russian embassy in Ulan Bator is a massive compound, which takes up a couple blocks. Entirely fenced in with the beautiful garden fencing shown, it is difficult to get a decent picture of the building, and alas, I was not invited in. On my travels I managed to get a picture of the "office building" that houses the Canadian Consulate, not nearly as impressive, but made a decent addition to Canada-Mongolia relations. Anyway, I will take a look at your other list and see if I can locate any of those other buildings, if I can I will snap a shot or two and add them to commons. Cheers. --kelapstick (talk) 18:28, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Kelapstick, thanks for your help with those photos, appreciated. I believe the building is indeed apartments used by embassy staff - with only 30 or so embassy staffers in Ulaanbaatar, they obviously have their choice of rooms. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 02:14, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Weird, isn't it

It is kind of weird that we have an article on the Khimki Forest, yet we are still lacking the main article on the Moscow – Saint Petersburg motorway now under construction. Kind of shows who makes the most noise. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 01:37, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

David Satter

Please read WP:BLP, then try to explain how your revert could possibly be the right thing to have done. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:04, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Oh well, let me see, the first and only point is that it was sourced. I do feel that you are instead talking of the rest of the article which is totally unsourced. Also, you do realise that you have removed one of the main points of what Shubin argues in relation to Satter - i.e. that Russia resolves all conflicts by force. So I guess the explanation that is going to be required is how you can under WP:BLP remove sourced information from the article, yet leave all that unsourced information alone? Please explain. If no explanation is forthcoming, I will revert it myself. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 00:09, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
No, all of it, your stuff especially since it was negative, but the other material is unbalanced in the other direction. As for adding extensive negative criticism of Satter's work to a biographical article, that's as bad as adding positive puffery: WP:COATRACK refers.
This article needs rewritten from scratch, which is why it is now stubbed. Recycling the previous text would be unlikely to produce better results at the second attempt. There's no reason to describe Satter's thesis in book A or essay B at length: were book A or essay B notable we'd have an article on them. A very brief description, with an even briefer description of any reviews, is all that's needed. This article needs to be a biography, not "twenty reasons to love/hate David Satter".
If this isn't clear, ask at WP:BLPN, but don't repeat the same mistakes as you made already. If you or Biophys are incapable of writing a balanced biographical article, you should leave it to someone else. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:25, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
And as far as the "see also" goes, you are quite right to remove it. I missed that. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:27, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Well I for one agree with the complete removal of the puff pastry from the article. I really do hate unsourced information in articles, but if I were to have done so I likely would have been accused of partisanship and vandalism, and a host of other ridiculous things. Thankfully, all of those accusations will now rest on your neck, and not mine ;)
However, in relation to Shubin's review is it quite valid for introduction into an article on the book, and on the author in general; just because it is negative doesn't preclude its existence in articles, particularly when it is attributed to who said it; but when we have an IP address (from Washington D.C.) removing sourced information from an article, and the only edit from that IP is that removal; one either thinks it is the subject or someone with a connection to the subject; particularly when unsourced puff pastry is left alone. And the points that Shubin, a scholar, makes are quite valid; we have a journo (which is second only to lawyers on the scum-sucking scale in terms of profession) using info from the 80s and transplanting as valid for the 90s, making judgements on issues which they only saw the very beginning and end result of (without being present for the actual event) [imagine writing commentary on the Olympic Games when you were only present for the opening and closing ceremonies....], and also makes the point of arguing that Russia solves all disagreements with force.
I am not going to comment on the other editor you mentioned, but in terms of myself, I am more than capable of writing compliant biographical articles, and will continue to do so in future. So I would be very miffed if Shubin's criticism was not reintroduced in some form in future into Satters article; if indeed it can be established that Satter is actually notable. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 00:44, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Hey Doc, just checked email, been offline for a couple of days. Got it, with thanks. An article on a Russian in a French magazine, sent from Germany to Australia. Who'da'thunk huh? :) As you say, it is very short, not much said in it, but I guess at the time it was a big thing for a Soviet designer to be featured in the magazine; even if it was only 3-4 pages long. I will see how I can incorporate it into the article somehow, as I would hate for that long search, and fulfilled request, to have been in vein. Thanks again for that, appreciated. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:03, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Zac, sorry for the delay in my response to you. 2008 I left you a message, and you respond in 2010. That is almost as fast as Pochta Rossii mail delivery ;) No problem on the photos of embassies, everyone has their own thing going on and often real life gets in the way ;) Things in Moscow...things in Moscow....how could I make use of this offer? I really don't know at the moment, I will think of something I am sure. I have a list at User:Russavia/Required photos of photos from around the world that I am requiring - perhaps if you know anyone in any of these places, you may be able to ask them if they can help. That would be of a huge assistance. Perhaps if you would like to work with me on something, in spare time that you have. It would involve trying to gain materials for use on Wikimedia projects -- perhaps you could help with this. But as to vodka. Hmmmm :))) I was thinking only a couple of weeks ago that I should start a collection of Russian vodka - I have quite a few friends in Moscow, but they always too busy to worry about their mate in Australia, and leave him without one of life's essentials - well not really but anyway. Perhaps you could help me with such a collection? ;) Cheers --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 08:06, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Samylovskii

Hello, Could you please correct the name "Samylovskii" ("ii" instead of "y"). Both spellings are acceptable, however, in the reference documentation published in English (see the article), the version with "ii" is used more often than with "y"-ending. I would prefer to stick to "ii" rather than to "y", please. If you could kindly put everywhere "ii" I would be most grateful. ERASWK (talk) 12:29, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Eraswk, sorry for silence, I haven't been ignoring you, I've just been busy with other things. So that you get a response to your query, would you mind if I ask you to approach User:Ezhiki about this, as he is better placed to explain WP:RUS. I will keep an eye on discussion, probably on his talk page, but Ezhiki and I see eye to eye on issues relating to WP:RUS, and as he is better placed to explain, I'll let him do that. Sorry I couldn't answer in more detail, but please do contact me if you need anything else ok. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:40, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi GoW, I am tied up with things on Commons at the moment - getting a heap of OTRS permissions and photos uploaded done. I believe the image needs to be created. I will put it on my to-do-list, as another editor was going to be helping me with it. I stole that particular idea from the German WP template. If it needs to be removed that's cool, but it will be a week or so before I will get to getting onto others to help with the image, etc. I'll put it on my to-do list. Hope this is suffice? Russian Barnstar

Russian Barnstar of National Merit
I award you with this Russian barnstar for your many brilliant contributions to Russia-related articles, and for all your patience and fortitude you showed being attacked by the unworthy people we all know.

Hi User:FeelSunny, thanks for the barnstar. I do try my best to contribute to the project on articles, but there are often too many distractions such as cleanup, categorisation, and something else I have been doing for some time now - finding images for articles, to be done that I don't write as much as I want to. Hopefully things will change in the future. As to the other unpleasantness that I have endured over the time on WP, it is my observation that when someone wants to contribute in a particular area, and frankly, without a particular POV one way or the other, they will come up against some who are not here with the best intentions - for the good of the overall project and everything it stands for. And that makes one a target for vexatious reporting, stalking and harrassment in an attempt to drive one from the project or to have them banned. Luckily, good will almost always triumph over not-so-good; it just disappoints me that some editors now seem to have taken to discussing issues with a particular arbcom member who is recused from a certain case, and given history, unbelievably has all but given those editors carte blanche to continue their harrassment, whilst denigrating everything that I "fight" against. It would be great if there was more collaborative spirit here on WP, but when one is confronted with shit like "I stronly suggest you not collaborate with Ruavia.", and without apology or recourse, but only attacking myself for making it known that editors out there have no intention to collaborate, it makes one wonder what the fuck is going on. But I will press on, and press on I will. Thanks for the barnstar FS. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:30, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

That's a good idea, but pre-1991 isn't in my field of interest. Offliner (talk) 23:23, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi Offliner, I will try to add some info if I get time; just got a few other things am working on. It looks ok for DYK, but how about you join up at WP:WIKICUP for next year, and this is one article that we could work on together to get up to a high standard, and use it as part of Wikicup comp. What ya think? That way we won't be rushed to meet the deadlines that often come with things like DYK; which reminds me, it has been a while since I have had one isn't it? Must get back to writing some articles some time. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:37, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
I already signed up for the WikiCup. Yes, I could have waited until 2011 with the DYK - but I was afraid that if I waited, someone else would create the article first and steal all the glory :) But don't worry, I still have lots of stuff for 2011, such as finally getting GA status for Gazprom. Hi. Do you think it's proper to replace "Great Patriotic War" with "second world war"? --Ghirla-трёп- 05:53, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Ghirla, I do not believe it is proper. The person who has this Australian Bigpond IP in Melbourne has been making such changes over the last few weeks. For topics which relate to Soviet/Russian history, in the context that the term is being used, Great Patriotic War is absolutely a valid term. It redirects to Eastern Front, so there is no problem with the relevance of the link. The same editor, obviously with a different IP, also made changes such as this. Note what Organising committee for the 65th anniversary celebrations of victory in the Great Patriotic War is changed into. This suggests that they are either automating their edits, or simply that they are hell bent on simply ridding WP of the particular term. The editor in question is not discussing their changes, and they continue to make such edits, and without an edit summary. You would have my full support if you were to revert their changes. WP:BRD tells us that they would need to discuss their changes before making them, but they obviously are not interested. Just revert the changes Ghirla. Your thoughts? --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:21, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Since there are multiple IPs at work, it would require a bot to revert them all. --Ghirla-трёп- 07:49, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Don't know if you have noticed some of the things I am doing on Commons at moment, but it is taking up most of my time at moment. If you come across any IPs making such changes, just list them here and they can be looked at I guess. A message on their talk page should also probably be left--perhaps encourage them to get a username to edit with (unless of course they are a banned or topic banned editor). I suppose we need to engage such editors, even anonymous ones, in discussion, even if they don't seem to be intent on discussing anything. I dunno what do you think? --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:59, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
I think you should report this to WP:AN/I or some other suitable noticeboard. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 02:28, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Consulate General in Seattle

I was a bit surprised to see this one in the list of things you require; I thought it's one of the biggies and is not hard to find. Well, as luck has it, I'm going to Seattle in mid-October; mainly to visit that very same consulate (I rather wouldn't, but at least I'll get to do some Seattle sightseeing, which should be fun). Anyway, for what my crappy picture-taking skills are worth, and weather permitting, I'll be happy to snap a few pictures for you. Are there any particular aspects (facade, entrance, signs, building, guards, bugged walls) you are looking for? Because, you know, if you don't tell me, you'll end up with a bucketload of barely usable pictures of things you'll never need :) Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 16, 2010; 15:54 (UTC)

Hey Ezhiki, the Russian consulate in Seattle is located at 2323 Westin Building, 2001 6th Ave., Seattle, WA 98121, which as you can see is located in an office building. The Russian consulate in Pusan has a photo of their consulate on their website at http://www.pusan.mid.ru/img/ko.jpg. Unfortunately this is going to be the extent of the Seattle consulate as well. Anything you can get of the consulate office would be best I think, and would be appreciated, crappy photography skills aside. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 01:00, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, I didn't realize they are just an office in a building. I somehow doubt I'll be able to take pictures inside. Oh well, I'll get as much as I can get away with :) Better that than nothing, right? Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 17, 2010; 13:19 (UTC)

Re: voices.com deletion

Hi Russavia

I contacted Tone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tone/Archive_16) about the deletion of the voices.com page. It was deleted for being to much "advertising". I would like it either restored (or restored to my User-space) so I can edit it.

He said you requested the deletion and that if you say it is okay that he'll restore it (or restore it to my userspace).

Can you please respond to me on my talk-page or message Tone about restoring the "voices.com" page?

Thanks so much

Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! AfD: Nominated for deletion; see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Djibouti)

Please see. (Rather than specific articles for such little known and poorly resourced ministries, I recommend an article which covers all of the executive ministries in DJ.)--S. Rich (talk) 16:47, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
