Economical advantage of anglophone countries

I'm trying to collect information and sources on this subject: how much economical advantage do English-speaking countries get because of their language? Personally, I suspect the advantage is considerable. For example:

• In all non-English-speaking countries people have to invest about 1-2 years (my rough estimate) of full time work in learning English. Anglophones don't have to, so they can concentrate on other things.
• For anglophone countries it is much easier to attract qualified workers from all over the world, because they will already know the language.
• When interacting with people from other countries, anglophones have a definite advantage because they have native command of the international language.
• For companies in anglophone countries, it is easier to market your products internationally. For example, Wikipedia and Facebook were originally introduced to the local American market only (in the local language). When they gained enough popularity in the American market, international attention came almost automatically. I strongly doubt the same would have happened if the sites had been first introduced to the German market (in the German language.)
• The so-called "international media" is (probably) biased in the favour of anglophone countries (I added some material on this to WP already: Media_bias#Anglophone_bias_in_the_world_media)

This seems like an important subject, but I'm having a very hard time finding any good sources about this, and I can't even find good search terms to use. Do you happen to know any sources which talk about this? Does your local media cover this subject?

I haven't seen this subject being covered in WP too much. It may be a hard subject to work on, especially if there is a lack of good sources, but it doesn't hurt to try. First I'll try to slowly collect more information and sources. Offliner (talk) 08:51, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

There are no sources because it's fantasy. The full list is lifted from old lists of "Why Russian is a good international language?" propaganda campaigns. It didn't work very well for Russian language, and it doesn't work very well for English language. Διγουρεν_{Εμπρος!} 06:01, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

My opinion is that Russia/USSR medal counts should be combined. I've often heard the media today use statements such as "Russia won gold in 19xx as the Soviet Union." Mamonovsky Lane

Been there May 9. Guess what, no external sign of any diplomatic missions. I asked a cop of the Embassy of Jordan where that Abkhazian mission could be - whose mission?!. Anyway, two pics of #4 are at commons:Category:Mamonovsky Lane. As I said, a long block filled with offices. There are no small buildings in the backyard and the small red building is still a fish restaurant.

But I also found this: Посольство Абхазии в Москве разместится в особняке XIX века. The place is also known as John Reed House (the guy had a taste for living, didn't he?), and a pic is at File:Moscow, Gagarinsky 11 Mar 2009 01.jpg. Pity if they "restore" it to Luzhkov's "evroremont" standards. And Russians are now flocking to Sukhum's beaches: Посольство России в Абхазии начало работу на постоянной основе. Do you happen to know if Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association is the company which will mass-produce the Superjet-100? This seems to suggest it: [1]. Russian bilateral relations - stub redirects

I will not redirect any more of these stubs since you are working on improving them. In general, I am trying to clean up a mass of stubs created by user:Groubani (under various aliases) which have triggered a huge amount of unproductive argument in AfD lately. Many are unlikely to ever be expanded, but some may well have potential for an article when an editor gets round to doing the research. Copying the small amount of content in these stubs into the "Foreign relations of" articles preserves it, and changing the article to a redirect makes the title unlikely to become a candidate for AfD. Then if an editor does decide to expand on a relationship, they can easily reverse the redirect and expand the stub - as you are doing - without getting flak for recreating an article that was deleted. This is getting out of hand. After I voted "oppose"[3] at an RfA, my friend Biophys immediately responds by voting "support"[4]. Note that Biophys did not post in any other RfA than this. When I posted an SPI report about Muscovite99 (after being told by Tiptoety that I should do this), Martintg immediately responds by launching a personal attack against me: [5] (are we going to suspect all those who critically edit Vladimir Putin, Putinism of being socks of Muscovite99?) Wikiproject taggings

I noticed (numerous articles on my watchlist) you've been pursuing your prior organizational activities regarding Russia-related topics. Unfortunately, quite a number of articles you have retagged as Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia from Wikipedia:WikiProject Russian History do not apply to the Russian empire or the Russian Federation but to Wikipedia:WikiProject Soviet Union. The (unintended) result of the retagging is conflation of the Soviet Union and Russia. Given that a critical view of the Soviet past is often inappropriately, inaccurately (and on the part of some, purposefully) interpreted as indicative of Russophobia, I'd ask you become a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Soviet Union, and as you retag articles, associate them with the more appropriate Wikiproject. Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia is not (and should not be) a superset of Wikipedia:WikiProject Soviet Union. I think this separation will be beneficial to both editors and readers. Thanks! These are project tags only. WP:RUSSIA covers all articles from Rus' thru to the Russian Federation. The Russian history project is basically defunct and was merged into WP:RUSSIA. There are no implications from tagging articles with {{WikiProject Russia}}, except that they will fall within the scope of our wikiproject. Close paraphrasing

What's your view on this? Do you think the article really is a copyvio of [8] per Wikipedia:Close_paraphrasing? This seems pretty ridiculous to me. Do I have to use a different wording, word order and sentence structure than what is in the source each time I provide new content? If so, that would decrease my productivity by at least 80%. Usually my English and/or expertise on the subject just isn't good enough to retell everything in my own words with a completely different text structure than what the source uses without a lot of work. In how many different ways is it possible to say something like "Andrei Tsygankov is Professor at the departments of Political Science and International Relations at San Francisco State University, where he teaches Russian and post-Soviet, comparative, and international politics" anyway? Anyway, I'd like to hear your input as this is potentially an issue that could require me to change my editing completely. I guess it's possible that the American law may be just as ridiculous as it sounds, but should we really apply it in such a ridiculous way? What about the various "List of publications" sections at BLP articles - should we remove all of them as well, as they are almost always directly copied from the person's CV? RU-MID

The copyright template RU-MID has been deleted: [9]. Do you think the pics could be reuploaded to normal WP under some other license? The main argument in the deletion discussion was Commons images must be allowed for commercial use and deritiative works, and if this isn't allowed for these files, they must go. But I think normal WP does not have this requirement, so reuploading them here would maybe be permitted? Offliner (talk) 23:17, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Question related to recent CfD

Hi; after closing this discussion, I have to admit that I am a left with a few questions that were raised by some of the participants there regarding some of the categories in Category:Bilateral relations of Russia. Just noticed that myself. I'll do up a few articles on some of the ambassadors to/from Senegal once I've finished working on my current masterpiece. Russia-Foo bilateral relations

Leaving aside your defensive and dismissive attitude, a better way to categorize this lot would have been to place all of the Russia-Foo relations articles in Category:Bilateral relations of Russia as the top level category. As the second-tier used Category:Ambassadors to Russia and Category:Ambassadors of Russia and placed the ambassadors categories there with a hatnote along the lines for "For more information see Russia-Foo bilateral relations and see also Category:Fooian ambassadors to Russia. That way you have a useful, navigable category structure instead of this rat's warren of never-to-be-populated mini-cats that require people interested in bilateral relations to dig through far too many layers instead of having them all in one easily navigated category. Putting aside the more colourful metaphors, I think Otto has a good point about a good alternative structure for this scheme. Every country really doesn't need a bilateral relations category with Russia just to house the main article and the ambassadors.
