• Thanks for the article, it is quite usable and have interesting citations added. On the other hand in my honest opinion it looks rather like a collection of citations rather than a coherent text. I would start that Avos is a Russian word meaning ..., in 19th century it was speculated (by whom) that it reflects some national mentality in twentieth century... Some examples. Your citations. External links/References.

Hi Russavia, thanks for your recent message about the Serbian Embassy image. I know things have gone wrong with it, I just didn't remember to specify the licence when I was uploading it, and I re-uploaded it to choose the right licence but apparently it didn't work. What do I do? The image qualifies as own work, so there should be no problems with the copyright. Do I have to delete it and re-upload? Let me know what's best to do. Cool, all ok now. In regards to the other embassies, there is a really good map at this link and a list of addresses at Mosfilmovskaya Street (also note the Chinese and Uruguay embassies within short distance of Mosfilmovskaya (to the south). Any of those, or any of the other embassies on Diplomatic missions in Russia which are missing, would be great. That would be sweet. Here is a more precise map of the area, with each of the embassies noted by the flag symbol. As is usual for Moscow streets, the majority of the embassies are located in alleys off Mosfilmovskaya, but address is still Mosfilmovskaya. No problem, I noticed the new photos, great stuff. What I have done is transferred these to Commons, so that they can be used across all WP projects, not just here on English WP. Yeah, that is correct, I didn't notice that on the map. Looking at the map there's only Nicaragua, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Romania and China left? Most of the buildings are fugly eh? The DPRK embassy looks more like type Korean Stalinist architecture, rather than Brezhnev era? Hi Russavia! I uploaded a couple of new images. Note the new image of the North Korean embassy, I took it on a sunny day so I didn't have to use Photoshop. It looks better than the first image, I think. I will also upload a new image of the Bulgarian embassy. Compare it to the other image. Hey mate, I'm bringing this back to the left hand side of the page so it's not all crushed up on the right. I have moved the UAE photo to commons, and the photo is there on the site, but it just doesn't seem to be thumbing at the moment for some reason. I'd say leave it for the time being, for a couple of hours, and see if it doesn't start working ok again soon. Uploading images directly to Wikimedia Commons

Hi Russavia! How are you doing? Looks like I'm done with the embassy images task. I've noticed the messages about no freedom of panorama in Russia. Good to know. I uploaded a couple of new images of bridges. They might come in handy for some pages in other sections of the Wikipedia project, so my question is: how do I propose that these images be copied to Wikimedia Commons? Hi there, yeah, we'll see how the images go on Commons, but at least we'll have a local copy on WP to work with in the event they are deleted from Commons. It simply means that if people want to use the photos on other projects they have to upload them to the project again. How to copy to Commons? Put this code {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} (including the {{ }}) on the photo page and save it, this will bring up a notice that it is a candidate to be moved to commons. You are able to complete the move yourself, or you can just leave it and someone will get to it in good time. If you point out which photos they are once you do the tagging, I can get them moved across for you. Sorry about the delay, was a little busy with the A & SO articles. Statue

Perhaps I should have sent you a heads up, I stand corrected....You know when the entire gallery got deleted the other day nobody asked my permission. Then I had to fight to get the gallery reinstated on the page.....I removed one of the two views of the same statue that you added and one view remains included. Perhaps there should be two pictures of the Michelangelo David, and two Iwo Jima statues, and another view of the Sphinx. By the way please add the artists name, the title and the date to the image. A closer look reveals - a mother and child, and a musician; indeed two separate statues..However they do closely resemble each other in a number of ways, and both are roughly in the same place and I think one will be sufficient. Slavic Europe Map

You had the following comments on my map:

• 1. Russian is not spoken by a minority in Leningrad Region (around St Petersburg);
• 2. Russian is not spoken by a minority in areas between Moscow and St Petersburg;
• 3. According to a 1970 census 92.000 people claimed they were speakers of Karelian dialects while the overall population of the then Karelian Autonomous Socialist Republic was at 715.000 people. If you can provide updated data on that, that'll be fine. If we rely on the data I provided there is no way for Russian to be spoken by a minority in Karelia.
• 4. Russian is the native language of ethnic Russians in Estonia and Latvia who make up around 25 percent of Estonia's and Latvia's population respectively.

My answers are:

• 1, 2 and 3. For the ethnic composition of Russia I used this map: http://www.languageandpeace.com/images/other/europe.gif. Perhaps the map could be changed to reduce the non Russian speaking pockets to the actual areas where they constitute a minority to Karelians, Tatars and so on.
• 4. For the Russians in Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan I used this map: http://map.primorye.ru/raster/maps/commonwealth/russians_ethnic_94.jpg. Russian is spoken in those countries by the Russian minority and it is not used by the majority of the population (I remember that you colored all of Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan green, instead of just the Russian inhabited pockets).
• Regarding the Republic of Moldova, I tried to color only the areas where the Russian and the Ukrainians are the majority. But I colored all of Transnistria and Gagauzia since Russian is used as a co-official language.

I'm not an expert on Slavic languages, but if the map could be improved it would be still usable.

Scooter20, here is my opinion of the maps you gave links to:

• http://www.languageandpeace.com/images/other/europe.gif - This map is VERY inaccurate and GENERAL in a very coarse way. If you look at the map of Ukraine and then read about Russian spoken in Ukraine you will see that areas around Odessa and in central Ukraine are not even indicated as bilingual. Better look at this picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ukraine_cencus_2001_Russian.svg Also, trust me, nowadays only some 1000 (one thousand) people speak Finnic languages in and around St Petersburg, so it's funny to see that Russian is a 'minority language' there. ))) I'm a specialist in Balto-Finnic languages and a graduate of the Russian Institute for Linguistics, so please, believe me and edit your map accordingly.
• http://www.languageandpeace.com/images/other/europe.gif - those areas marked in a mix of colors do not indicate that Russian is used by a minority there. It would be a logical phallacy to deduce that (which you did while composing your map of Slavic languages).
• http://map.primorye.ru/raster/maps/commonwealth/russians_ethnic_94.jpg - this map is fine for a map showing ethnic composition of post-Soviet nations (still, the red regions indicate areas where Russians form a majority, while in fact ethnic Russians and Russian speakers of other ethnic background are more spread-out than one might think judging by this map). Yet it is quite useless for a linguistic study since it is not only ethnic Russians who speak Russian in and outside Russia. If you look at Kyrgyzstan you'll see that Russians are barely present there yet Russian is the second official language of that country.
• As for Kazakhstan, I guess you know that Russian has co-official status in that country.
• As for the Baltics, Russian speakers are spread out across the whole of Estonia and Latvia, yet the majority of Estonia-based ethnic Russians is in and around Narva and Kohtla-Jarve. • My overall opinion is the following: I think it's a challenging task to collect data on the geography of Slavic languages, so you need to be well-familiar with these languages, and have something more reliable than two unverified and outdated maps. After all we all want Wikipedia to be a source of reliable and accurate information! I recommend that you read many independent sources on demographics and Slavic languages first and only then upload a corrected map to Wikipedia. Accuracy (not urgency) should be the chief goal, in my opinion.

I have created maps for Romance-speaking Europe and Germanic-speaking Europe and wanted to create one for Slavic-speaking Europe.

My initial goal was to create a map of the Distribution of Slavic peoples in Europe but then it turned into a Slavic-speaking Europe map. I know that not only Slavic peoples speak Slavic languages and there are a lot of bilingual people that speak a Slavic language, mainly in former Soviet countries.

My goal would be to create a map that shows the distribution of Slavic peoples

• where they are the majority (Slavic countries)
• where they are the minority (pockets of non-Slavic peoples in Slavic countries)
• Slavic populations in countries with non-Slavic majority (like: Moldova, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakhstan etc)

I order to do so I would probably need more accurate sources.

Could you provide a good source map regarding the ethnic composition of Russia, which seems to be the biggest issue here.

If you can provide good maps on other countries that would be good too.

If I'll have the proper sources, I'll probably create a more accurate map when I'll have some free time.

Bannout Article

Hi. Thank you for your attention to the article on Mohammad Bannout I started today. Perhaps it should be said for your knowledge that Bannout is an up and coming bodybuilder, who has taken part in a number of bodybuilding contests. He is also cousin to the famous bodybuilder Samir Bannout. That article could be useful for people interested in sports. I don't see any reason why ignorance should be treated as an argument when deciding to mark a new article as qualifying for speedy deletion. Waiting for you reply. Please, remove the tag. Thank you! On wikipedia, the threadhold for inclusion is verifiability, not truth. A quick search revealed no reliable sources that have been included in independant, third party sources. Family relations ships are explicitely no indication of notability. Seeing that you edited the article and gave an indication that he won several contests, there must be some press coverage of these. Do you have any sources? Perhaps news articles? Or maybe websites that comply with the guidelines in WP:RS? If you can add those then i see no reason whatsoever to remove the article.

As for the tag, I will act as if i proposed deletion on the article, which means i will re-check the article in a week to see if there is any need to remove it. As i am working as a new page patrol i only do global checks for references on an article. In fact, those check are more of a way to determine if i should tag the article for WP:CSD, WP:PROD or WP:Maintenance, then that they are meant to source articles (Though if i found any that are undeniably good, i always add them). The difference between the tags is that CSD is tagging for immediate removal (In case there is not even a claim to notability), PROD is tagging for removal after a week (in case there is a claim for notability, but a quick search cannot establish it) and maintenance is mainly for adding non removal tags that indicate what work still needs to be done.

In this case the article (The version i tagged) had no indication of notability. It merely indicated that he was a bodybuilder from lebanon, which is about the same as "A kid from highschool" (notability wise that is! :) ). When i searched for "Mohammad Ali Bannout" i got a mere two results - can you already see the flaw? I accidentally included the middle name and did a literal search, which excluded a lot of results. Normally i would have made a variation on the name but it suddenly occured that the article you were writing might be about Mohammed Ali. In the few seconds it took me to realise that was an american boxer, and not a libanese bodybuilder, i completely forgot i had another check to do. If i would have left out Ali i would probably have given it some maintenance tags and perhaps a prod to see if it was improved.

Still, i would recommend always using this format for starting articles: Person X is a Y notable for Z. Sometimes admins are really fast with their removals and i am pretty sure that more then a few would have removed the article for wither having no context (WP:A1) or for having no notability (WP:G7). Alternatively you can use a user subpage, which has the huge advantage that those are not patrolled, which means you can work on an article in peace and quite. Last you can add the {{inuse}} or {{underconstruction}} templates to a page. Not every patrol respects those, but i virtually never go any higher then a PROD on pages tagged with those - unless i am completely sure that a page should be removed; But this is only on extreme pages such as articles that have a title that states "DFJKLSDHFJKLH" and a content of "TESTTESTTEST".

And before i quite babbling: Good job on the article! It looks a great now, a few inline refs and its about perfect. Also, my apologies for the quick tag - know that it was entirely based upon a misunderstanding. Happy editing to you :) Excirial ^{(Contact me,Contribs)} 16:59, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I have noticed that you have added some counter to Vladimir Putin, Mosfilm and a few other articles. This usage of external links is unusable, contradicts WP:EL and may violate user's privacy (assuming they are tricked to go to the link nad their IP is logged). I undid your reverted edit again. I consider it totally ungrounded. I added relevant information with references. Why should it be dismissed and deleted as irrelevant without discussion? The problem is that you are doing what is called "synthesis". You have taken two sourced but unconnected facts and drawn a conclusion from then which neither souce supports. That is a special kind of original research called synthesis and it's not allowed. You need a citation from a reliable source to draw the conclusion, you' cannot do it, nor can I, or any other Wikipedia editor. That's the way things work here. It is not synthesis and you haven't provided any argument to support your claim. It is deduction. My deduction is based on dictionary definitions which state clearly that "an island is smaller than a continent". Australia is the smallest continent on Earth hence the conclusion. Первым параметром в нём идёт название на русском; вторым параметром — название аудиофайла (без "file:"). Если файл есть на Commons, то шаблон его найдёт. My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'm scouring user pages looking for inspiring, motivating and interesting stories of how Wikipedia has affected the lives of people. I'm asking questions like "How has Wikipedia changed your life?", "What's the most interesting story you have about Wikipedia?" and "Has Wikipedia ever surprised you?"

Last year, we used the annual fundraiser as a way to show the world who it is who actually writes Wikipedia. We featured editors from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, United States and England. This campaign was a huge success, resulting in the most financially successful fundraising campaign ever. It was also a campaign that stayed true to the spirit of Wikipedia, educating the public that this free top-5 website is created by volunteers like you and I.

This year we want to highlight more Russian-language Wikipedia editors, so I am in the process of planning a trip to Russia to interview editors.

If you or someone you know (or have heard about) has been positively affected by Wikipedia, or have something interesting to say about Wikipedia I'd very much like to hear about it!

I made referenced edits and they were simply reverted by Yeppiz with no explanation concerning the referenced materia. I already messaged him (her). The result is that you deleted my edits supported by references. Is that logical? I don't see why I have to discuss material supported by many references. I have read it and I don't find it very helpful. One user provided good arguments and they were ignored by a few other users. Per the ANI discussion it looks like the RfC concluded that the full undivided population of Istanbul should be shown in the list. That is, the reported population should include both the European and Asian parts. If you disagree, you have the option of trying a new RfC. The last one was in mid-2015. Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days.
