Somerset Levels

Hello - I took a look at Somerset Levels and I didn't see anything I could change in the geology section. A bit of research likewise turned up nothing contradictory from what I could determine. Looks good! Cheers Geologyguy 17:47, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Topographical Dictionary of England

Rod - have you seen this? It looks like a fantastic resource for local articles. I especially love the description of Chedder Cliffs as "appearing as if the mountain had been rent by an earthquake from the summit to the base". Great, citable content. --Cheesy Mike 09:37, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Somerset map

You've done some great work on getting UK articles upto GA and FA standard in the past. I may be able to help with your efforts and create an infobox county map of Somerset - simillar to that used on say Lancaster, Skegness and Oadby. I'll keep you updated; if not, feel free to remind me in a week or so! Jza84 01:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello! I haven't forgotten about the Somerset map - it is coming along nicely, and should be with us soon!... Just wanted to get back in touch with you about a comment you made at the new WP:UKCITIES guideline talk page... is there any official convention about the use of kilometers as the primary distance unit in articles, even in the UK? I'm a sucker for consistency, so if it is the case I'll certainly be rolling it out, but I can't see that being popular. Jza84 22:36, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello again! On this occation, I'm a bringer of good news! The Somerset infobox map is created. Hopefully a calibrator is able to amalgamate it into the infobox in time to aid Chew Stoke to FA status. My pet project Shaw and Crompton is up for FA too - you may wish to take a look, and perhaps see how the WP:UKCITIES guide is applied there (I'd personally like to see it on Chew Stoke too). Jza84 00:17, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the support - I'll try to rephrase the sentence you raised concern about. Chew Stoke looks great! I think it may need at least one source in the "Governance" section to satisfy reviewers though. I'll hang back just one weekend and see what developments are made and comments passed, and I'll likely support this article as one of our finest. Jza84 15:18, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

From Marcus Sheffield

In looking at your Chew Stoke article, I found the line below unclear, and I don't know how to edit it. If you want to leave it alone, just do so, and I'll forget it.

Middle Ages

"The next recorded owner was Lord Beauchamp of Hache, by whom Chew Stoke was held under the Honour of Gloucester."

Cheers, --Marcus Sheffield 23:45, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Check Change

I hope my edit to the history section of Chew Stoke expresses your meaning. I used a fairly strong word, "surrender," to express what the earls of Gloucester did. Let me know if this is not accurate. I probably should have checked with you first, but I'm new at this wiki thing! Marcus Sheffield 21:09, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Bad luck

Sorry to see that you didn't manage to get Chew Stoke through the FA obstacle course.

But you can surely take credit in the fact that you've written what is probably the best article on the village available on the internet. --Malleus Fatuarum 01:12, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Question

Is the spelling "Pilgram" correct in the Geography section of Chew Stoke? The spelling is unusual, but I thought it might be standard in Chew Stoke rather than "Pilgrim." Marcus Sheffield 20:15, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Question

This sentence from the rectory section of Chew Stoke is unclear to me. I don't want to edit it without clarification from you.

"The building has an ornate south front with carvings of shields bearing the coat of arms of the St Loe family, who were once chief landowners in the area, alone or impaled with arms of Fitzpane, Ancell, de la Rivere and Malet." Marcus Sheffield 18:05, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Question

See New Rectory section of Chew Stoke.

In England is what we call in the USA a "nursing home" (for very old people) called a "nurses home"? Marcus Sheffield 18:12, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. I had never heard of a "nurses home," but it makes perfect sense. In the US of A we don't have homes for nurses (that I know of!).

I've completed editing the Chew Stoke article. I'll be happy to look at your other one.Marcus Sheffield 18:38, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Ribs

Thanks for your comments! I'm planning on getting stuck into all the English cathedrals... well, the ones I'm relatively familiar with anyway. I haven't been to Bristol for years and since I'm located on the other side of the planet it's a bit hard to check things out.

I've just rewritten Gothic architecture and Romanesque architecture. Bristol was easy to write about because i know how it looks, and the dates and so on were all provided.

The facade is my only problem there. My reading seems to indicate that Street began it and Pearson finished it. I hope that's right.

I'm very glad that we have got beyond the stage of knocking all things Victorian. When you're living in the Land of Oz, you get a different perspective on things. Finding a gutter that dates from the 1790s is equivalent to finding a Roman bath house.

I think it would be a good idea to link tierceron to lierne. I don't know that it really warrants a separate article, just an explanation.

Thanks for fixing typos, spelling etc. My spelling is often bad, and if I think about it, it's worse. and i make typos all the time. I'll take a quick look at the other article. --Amandajm 11:02, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rod. It took a bit of finding, but I managed to track him down. His name is actually Andrew Williams, not Wilson. Hi, I'm an idiot wikipedia newby trying to help out with some of the missing pix for the Somerset wiki... On to Long Sutton and a suggestion for a good Somerset page topic

Hi, Rod, I noticed on your page that you were planning to wikify the Long Sutton page, so I thought I'd see what was there. Since I had a couple nice pix of their church, I put those up and added the age of the church and a Pevsner ref, which probably isn't correct style, but at least it's there to fix. As I was posting the picture, I thought of a poster I got at Mary Magdalene church in Taunton on "Somerset Towers." Holy Trinity Long Sutton, St. Mary's in Huish Episcopi, as well as MM in Taunton are examples but there are 90 medieval towers in Somerset; 50 considered classic. (Chew Mag. has an excellent Somerset Tower.) These are square, multi-tiered towers with spires and "Somerset tracery;" usually built of blue lias and/or red sandstone, and often golden hamstone (depending on the distance to Ham Hill and red sandstone sources). This article would link a good number of the village/town pages and be a good cultural topic for the overarching Somerset project. I'll at least see if I can post St. Mary's picture. Cheers!Celia Kozlowski 23:21, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

good catch and Somerset Towers

Thanks again, Rod. My picture was of the pulpit, not altar. I've fixed that. I am a little suspicious of the claim that the pulpit is one of the oldest in England. The statuettes in the 12 niches date to 1868 according to Pevsner, and I'm surprised that he doesn't mention the extreme age if it's so old... and the church itself is not so old, but I don't actually know that the comment is incorrect, so I let it stand.
I'll have to finish my writing for work before I even think about the towers... and if the idea's out there someone else may start it, which would be good. I might see if I can find "Tom and Jackie Murrow" who did the poster I got at St. Mary Mag. and see if they would be interested in doing such an article or having their poster re-created -- or at least referenced extensively-- in Wikipedia. They drew heavily on Pevsner, so we can always go back to that. I actually like their line drawings of the towers -- it makes them very easily comparable -- sort of a 'spot the difference' gameCelia Kozlowski 08:10, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Sammy Woods

I should like to question your removal of the Somerset Project banner from his Webpage. I know that the Project's guidelines include: "It is not intended to include people with only a loose connection eg alumni of local universities or those who played for local sports teams." However Woods did much more than merely play for Somerset County Cricket Club and Bridgwater and Albion rugby club. He lived in the county for the rest of his life, and was a popular and well-known figure even with those who knew little of cricket and rugby. David Foot, a well-known West Country cricket writer, in a piece about "Somerset Cult Heroes" said: "He was a classless man, chummy with Taunton's social elite as well as the farm workers who came to the local market. The town went into mourning when he died."[1] (The link is given as a reference in the article. The whole of the section on Woods is worth reading.) There are other pieces on Woods that could have been cited to make the same point. His Wiki article perhaps needs to spell out his great popularity more clearly. JH (talk page) 18:07, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for restoring the banner. I would imagine that a "Sport in Somerset" article would probably mainly comprise links to more detailed articles on particular topics, many of which would already exist (eg Somerset County Cricket Club). If I'm right in thinking that, then perhaps a "Sport in Somerset" category might be the best way of bringing those articles together, rather than a top-level article? I should add that, though Sammy Woods is something of a hero of mine because he was such a colourful character, I am not a Somerset man myself and I don't have any special knowledge concerning Somerset sport. Newton Surmaville

How perfectly delightful to meet you, Mr Rodw (what a strange name! Are you by chance from Wales?). It was my pleasure to add a little detail to the page. All the books I listed are from my own (not inconsiderable library); however, I do believe that members of the general public who are not as fortunate as I can find copies of all the sources mentioned in the Somerset Studies Library in Taunton. Not that I have ever visited the place (indeed, I shudder involuntarily at the very thought), but I believe the SSL (as I have seen it named) is housed on the first floor of the main library on Paul Street. Mr Pevsner's little tome is perfectly delightful in most respects: I was somewhat surprised to find him in error. As someone with the good taste to be interested in architectural history, I cannot recommend the series to you enough: a truly monumental work with much illuminating detail. I enjoin you to seek the relevant volume out at your local book emporium post haste.

My very best wishes,

Princess Venetia di Cannoli 15:20, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I should add that I intend to expand the article at some point, but I am enagaged in little family disagreeableness at the moment that is quite taking up all my time and mental activities. I ask for your forbearance.
Princess Venetia di Cannoli 15:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Ah, it appears I misunderstood you the reference to the article that you made on my user page (Ugh. I cannot get used to such a base term) - it seemed to me that you were referring to the Pevsner reference and were unaware that it was a book, not an article. But all is well, as you are clearly most familiar with the dear man.
A virtual soiree? Your invitation is most kind if a little socially naive, dear boy. A princess only moves in certain circles and a gathering such as this would not be appropriate for one of my station. I expect there will be little squares of cheddar and pineapple on sticks, paper "serviettes" will be handed around rather than linen napkins, and Asti Spumante will be liberally splashed into polystyrene cups.
But, on a lighter note, I see from an observation of your user page that you are a nurse. May I ask your advice on a delicate matter? It is not on my behalf, of course, but for my dear sister. How she suffers! Normally I would consult my her physician, Dr Crippen, but he is strangely unavailable.

Hi. I recently edited the UF page with a substantial guidebook section which someone (I'm new to Wikipedia, so I'm not clear exactly how to figure who) deleted supposedly because it was copied from the MCG club site. There's one thing I think could still be criticised though. In the Defensive architecture section it says "An area known as Old Market, outside the castle, formed a mustering point for the troops." What troops? Troops haven't been mentioned up until then. --Malleus Fatuarum 19:31, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:32, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Photo of Ashill, Somerset

Hi Rodw

I recently searched on Ashill, Somerset looking for more info on a village in which my forebears resided back in the 15 & 1600's. I had visited Ashill last Nov (2007) looking for grave markers, birth records, etc. Unfortunately, I only had a few hours and everything seemed to be closed up and the streets were empty. I took many photos of the local church and the surrounding grounds.

So I was surprised to see a photo attached to the Ashill entry claiming to be a photo of the church which bears no resemblance to the actual church. I was further puzzled to see that almost 350 other Somerset sites use the same photo on their pages.

I am a total "newbie" to Wickpedia but I tried to "talk" to the person who posted the photos Littlebackpistol to understand why these generic photos had been posted but I haven't heard back from him.

I would like to offer my photos of Ashill, incl the Church, renovated Bishops residence, etc if you are interested in adding them to your impressive effort to post articles about Somerset. Any information about how to do this, how to resize would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

box-picture gallery overlap on Lytes Cary page

Hi Rod -- We're really trucking on the Somerset wiki--I realize there's lots to do, but bit by bit, we're nibbling away at it! Anyway, as I was doing Lytes Cary last night, I ran into the problem of the box overlapping with text and the picture gallery. That was the main reason I made the box so short -- I didn't know how to fix the overlap problem except by cutting as much as I could out of the box. With the geo coordinates and map, the problem is back again. Do you know a way to fix this properly? The only thing I would know to do would be to take out a picture from the gallery... a rather kloodgy fix. We're off to Pawlett this afternoon, I hope, so I can finally get some pictures of their church and stained glass window... hope it's not too late. cheers, celia k —Preceding unsigned comment added by Celiakozlowski (talkcontribs) 11:37, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Lytes Cary overlap

Hi, Rod -- got some Pawlett pix this afternoon and will upload/download shortly. We were lucky to be spotted by the husband of the church warden who got the key, let us in and gave us a tour of the highlights!

I browse with Firefox on a Mac and the Lytes Cary Manor page has the communion rail gallery picture just overlapping the bottom left corner of the info box, covering the letters COMPL of the word "Completion." Is there a simple way to force a couple extra lines of space above the gallery to drop it below the info box?

cheers et thanksCelia Kozlowski 21:21, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

That fixed it!

Now I can see there was another line covered (Style) ... at any rate the extra white space fixed the Lytes Cary page. I'm uploading a picture of East Lyng -- stopped there briefly too to cross another photo off the list of requesteds... then on to Pawlett. cheers! Celia Kozlowski 22:48, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Culbone Church

Yes I was that second about to change it!. Incidentally I just printed off the photo to show my parents. It loos beautiful. Hopefully it can be expanded further. As it was cited as the smallest church in England I thought it should have an article!! Keep up the great work ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 23:13, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps you could expand using this site. The info loks quite promising. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 23:17, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Pawlett

Hi -- I put my pix up for St. John the Baptist church and edited the church section quite a bit. It was a really interesting visit -- lots of the details came from the man who let us into the church; many are supported by observations or a booklet I picked up. I'll add that reference to the page tomorrow if I get a chance. Pardon my french, but the church is plug-ugly on the outside... the crudest of Somerset towers and the whole lot covered with crumbling cement and pidgeon poop. Inside they long ago whitewashed over murals (you can just barely make them out in two places) that doubtless would have been as fascinating as the hat-pegs, bells, seated communion arrangements and Saxon and Norman bits... I can see why it's Grade 1 listed -- but it doesn't have anything to do with good looks! cheers,Celia Kozlowski 00:21, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Re Photos for Somerset Project

Hello Rod, thanks for the welcome.

Is it just me or is everything on here rather complicated. I would love to provide some photos for the project but I find I'm put off by the complexity everywhere I look.

If you could cut through the jargon for me and explain where you want the pics uploaded to I will gladly help.

If you want to write to me off this list I'm at dbown100@hotmail.com

Mendip references

Hello again! Having just had another look at Mendip Hills, I think the time really has come to have an alphabetical References section for the printed books cited in the article. I think there are about 8 or 9 of them (the Le Carré book should get the same treatment).

I know we discussed this earlier, & you disagreed—but the number of books seems to have doubled since then. Still, it's your call ...

All the best. --NigelG (or Ndsg) | Talk 20:28, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

I can't see what your objection is to an alphabetical bibliography. It's a pretty well-established feature of most reference works, isn't it? Apart from anything else, it provides interested readers with a convenient reading list if they want to go into the subject in greater detail. Anyway, I've got it off my chest—I promise not to mention it again! --NigelG (or Ndsg) | Talk 11:01, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, it depends which section you look at! I base my practice on this section. Horses for courses, I suppose. --NigelG (or Ndsg) | Talk 12:11, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rod

This is a very, very random message indeed - I was hunting on Google for some information on NHS IP addresses, and stumbled upon this link. I figured out it was you as you'd mentioned you created Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. I just wanted to say that I was very proud to see a fellow Wikipedian being so helpful without being asked. A fine example we should all try and emulate. Have an ASCII barnstar! Reedy Bot is giving a bad name to this project

I'm guessing that this project supports the tagging of articles with the England banner. I have tried complaining to the bot but it continues to add boxes to articles that are already part of the Derbyshire, Bedfordshire and Somerset projects. Now it may seem nice to see that Project England now has thousands of articles tagged but its not a useful use of time and makes some poor editors talk page a spam template mess. Just remember that Wikiproject UK are going to tag all the England articles... oh and wikiproject Europe ... and Geography ... and English ... and ... Can someone please stop this bot. Does anyone support this bot? (I note it has done useful work in the past and some of its work now may be useful Victuallers 17:33, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:26, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

UKCOUNTIES?

Hello Rodw/Archive 3! I Hope all is well. I'm contacting you as part of your continued membership of WP:UK Geography.

In addition to some cosmetic upgrades I've made/requested for the project, I'm considering a draft upgrade of the Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about counties guide, so that it is much more user friendly and at a standard more akin to the WP:UKCITIES standard.

Of course I'd like to have you involved from the start. If you have any concerns or ideas, I'd be grateful if you could leave them at my talk page, where I'll pool together some ideas from some other users and then report back with them. My initial thoughts are they should inline with the existing policy on counties as well as allow for flexibility for ENG/SCO/WLS/NI. Hope you can help, -- Jza84 · (talk) 22:17, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the response. I have uploaded some basic draft guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about counties and have replied to you at the talk page. -- Jza84 · (talk) 13:51, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

The plot

Hi Rod, I reset your addition as I'm concerned that it will turn into a "me too" list with the biggest celebration in the west country, in Birmingham, in Wolverhampton, in Yate ... all wanting a namecheck. This is an article about the plot.... not the Nov 5th celebrations. Maybe there is a need for such an article ... I see there is one for another important Nov 5th "do" where they have special committees - and I left that link there. Its nothing personal but this is about Catesby et al, not Penny for the guy. OK? Grade I listed buildings in Bristol

I have two comments on your nomination. 1. It is currently 589 characters. All nominations will be chopped at the 500th character at the close of nominations, if the nominator has not edited them down to 500 words. 2. You may or may not want to have two nominees in the same month since you will only have one feedback ballot counted when considering nominees and since there is another similar list (List of Chicago Landmarks).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 19:58, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Imperial triple crown jewels.

Hi, I've been sprucing up the triple crown awards. Here's the new version of the imperial triple crown jewels you've already earned. Feel free to replace your old one with this if you like the new version better. I've also introduced two new triple crown awards for editors who've done a lot of triple crown work: the Napoleonic and Alexander the Great edition awards. If you're active in a WikiProject, check out the new offer for custom WikiProject triple crowns. I'll make those upon request if five or more editors qualify. Wellsway School: Music

The music section found in the Wellsway School: Other Extra Curricular activities, has been changed. There is still said to be a violation? All my own words, using known facts, as I had a strong part in the music department, and alot of the events. Do I still need to reference that, even though there is nothing on the internet with these facts?

Thanks

Thanks Rod, that helped me get a better understanding of the artical.

I have tried to take out the 'biast' based words, however some may remain, I think it is harder for someone who has written the artical to spot their own mistakes! Thanks for helping me in this area, if there are any more, please poin them out.

Can you see any other areas that need changing? Areas of improvement?
