Gloucester Cathedral

Hi Rod, Happy New Year and I hope you are keeping well. I’ve been doing a bit on Gloucester Cathedral, including linking a few of your articles. I’ve been a bit stumped by the separate article on Gloucester Abbey. They are both about the same foundation, although the abbey was its earlier incarnation. I’m not sure having two articles helps the reader and have been thinking about merging them. I’ve asked User:Ealdgyth who created the abbey article but they’ve not got back to me. They do seem to overlap until the dissolution around 1540 so could be included in the history section. I have come accross cases elsewhere in the country where the relationship between Abbot & Bishop/Dean was not harmonious and therefore followed different practices etc but I am not reading this here (although I'm no expert on Gloucester Cathedral). I will try to take a look at a couple of books which may help - but not till tomorrow.— Rod ^talk 21:41, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

It’s exactly that - St. Peter’s (or Gloucester) Abbey was the title until the English Reformation and it was then reconstituted as Gloucester Cathedral. Re: Smiljan (given name)

Yes. The typical lifecycle of an anthroponymy article seems to be that they start off as part of disambiguation pages, cf. WP:NAMELIST. If we tell the reader of "Smilja" that there's a "Smiljan (given name)", that can be a red link, which is nominally fine, but there's already a relevant list of people at the "Smiljan" disambiguation page, so why not help them out and point them there until a proper anthroponymy article is written? I was made aware that the existing disambiguation tools are not supportive of this concept, but I've never heard an actual reader complain, so I'd prefer to continue doing this, because I believe it helps the average reader more than pointing them to the red link pages / search. --Joy (talk) 19:22, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Jules Prown and Freehold

In this edit, you disambiguated Freehold, New Jersey to Freehold Township, New Jersey. On what basis did you pick the township, rather than Freehold Borough, New Jersey? However I didn't change the categories & Jules Prown is included in Category:People from Freehold Township, New Jersey - I knew I must have got it from somewhere. Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Hi, on Feb 17 you have disambiguated a (great?) number of Sapphire Rapids wikilinks, e.g. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1139921231. It appears shortly after the microprocessor article was renamed to "Sapphire Rapids", so while you do a great service in general, in this case the disambiguation should better be undone to avoid the redirection. I reverted it in a few articles, and the edit I have mentioned required a manual revert, so perhaps you could do it more efficiently? It appears the change was done by User:Trigenibinion on 16 Feb. Looking back, there were about 25-30 links to Sapphire Rapids which I changed to Sapphire Rapids (microprocessor) - none of which relate to the rapids on the Colorado River. As Sapphire Rapids (microprocessor) is now a redirect to Sapphire Rapids (done by User:CambridgeBayWeather at 19:36 on 18 Feb) then the readers will end up in the right place so I don't think there is any need to revert them. WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
• Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
• FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
• TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
• Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

• Iazyges (1040) with three FAs on Byzantine emperors, and lots of bonus points.
• Unlimitedlead (847), with three FAs on ancient history, one GA and nine reviews.
• Epicgenius (636), a WikiCup veteran, with one FA on the New Amsterdam Theatre, four GAs and eleven DYKs
• BennyOnTheLoose (553), a seasoned competitor, with one FA on snooker, six GAs and seven reviews.
• FrB.TG (525), with one FA, a Lady Gaga song and a mass of bonus points.

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

The page was full of bad grammar and misleading claims (all added by a single user User:Bhavana 777) and I spent about an hour this morning cleaning it up and "Wikifying" it, only to see that the aforementioned user had come back and again added badly formatted content in bad grammar and misleading claims to the page. Please take some action

(PS: the misleading claim is saying Havyaka Brahmins are "from" Uttar Pradesh - they are said to originate from there 1000+ years ago and I DID mention this under the "origins" header. WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Thebiguglyalien, with 919 points from a featured article on Frances Cleveland as well as five good articles and many reviews,
• Unlimitedlead, with 862 points from a high-scoring featured articles on Henry II of England and numerous reviews,
• Iazyges, with 560 points from a high-scoring featured article on Tiberius III.

Hi Rodw. I noticed you and Onel5969 did a lot of disambiguation edits after the move regarding Matt Flynn. That said, one of the articles you disambiguated, Matt Flynn (football player), got moved and renamed again the next day to the proper naming convention Matt Flynn (American football player). I'm not sure I am understanding your request. There are two football players listed at Matt Flynn (one American and one Australian football) so I think some discussion would be needed to demonstrate that Matt Flynn (American football player) should be the target of Matt Flynn (football player) as a primary topic. There are now almost 500 redirects of Matt Flynn (football player) to Matt Flynn (American football player). These were the edits you made, disambiguating after the page move. Unfortunately, the page move was to a poor target Matt Flynn (football player) and another editor quickly corrected this, but not before you and other editors went through and made a bunch of edits. As an example, in this diff, you changed Matt Flynn to Matt Flynn (football player). However, it should be changed to Matt Flynn (American football player), i.e. the proper target article. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

• Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
• Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
• Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Kenan and Kel potential vandalism

Hi! I've just noticed that someone has replaced all of the directors/writers on the list of "Kenan and Kel" episodes with what looks to be the names of the production crew from either "Dexter's Laboratory" or "Powerpuff Girls". I know this is a strange thing to ask, but I'm still fairly new to Wiki and haven't exactly figured out how to revert an edit yet. Is there anyway you could potentially help? Thanks! I presume you are talking about List of Kenan & Kel episodes? I know nothing about this programme so can't comment on the accuracy of the additions (and I'm not going to search for sources). WikiCup 2023 November newsletter

The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process.
