Hi. When you recently edited Reconnaissance Corps, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page 78th Division (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Categories for British infantry brigades

edit

Thanks for your hard work, well referenced, on these formations. Please however place them in the relevant *infantry* brigade category: for example Category:Infantry brigades of the British Army in World War II. Buckshot06 (talk) 10:16, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I know ! Nobody has set up the relevant subcategories to link them to Category:Infantry brigades until I came along, and though I've created the categories, it will take a while before you, me, and anyone else can move all the brigade articles to the right subcats... Oh well, on WP:There is no deadline... ;) Buckshot06 (talk) 23:13, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also noticed that you created a separate article for 38th Inf Bde's WW I service. Now there is no hard-and-fast rule as far as I know, but virtually all Brit inf bdes and divs with identifiable continuing histories WW I /WWII have been merged (I did a wave of this when I first started in 2006). I am going to add a summary of your data to 38 (Irish) Inf Bde, and respectfully ask you to consider merging 38 Inf Bde's history into one article. Kind regards Buckshot06 (talk) 23:19, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Military units and formations in London

edit

In line with the U.S. state (and other, Indian) categories, since there are now over five London units in the Category:Military history of London cat, would you mind creating a subcategory? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 22:33, 25 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is exactly in line with my own thinking - I'll do so as soon as I can. I would also like to start a debate about whether the London Regiment page should be divided into two: London Regiment [the present day unit] and London Regiment 1908–1937, which was a completely different organisation. It effectively disappeared in 1916 and the individual battalions were treated as ' XX London Regiment' in their own right, affiliated to different regular Army regiments. Doubled categories

edit

Thanks for all your continuing hard work on the various RA regiments, especially AA. You're doing a fantastic job. However there's one minor course correction I'd like to pass on. At the moment you have listed some regiments in the lowest category - say Cat:Light AA Regts - and the next category higher up, usually Category:Air defence units and formations of the British Army. Articles should not be listed in two levels of the hierarchy at once, because that just clutters the higher category, and the lowest categories are usually specifically created to declutter the higher categories. You'll see the edit I've just made at [1] which reverses your mistaken addition of yesterday. Again, you're doing a fantastic job, I wish we had more like you, and this is just a minor word in your ear. Just about my first talkpage message back in 2006 was a similar warning not to do this as regards USAF units.... Buckshot06 (talk) 15:32, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I quite agree: more decluttering needed. Updating the categories is an ongoing process for the Royal Artillery and Volunteers (many pages of which are out there but have never been put into relevant categories). I'll carry on, and at the same time I'll tackle more of the doubled categories. Thanks for taking an interest.Rickfive (talk) 09:24, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Minor edits

edit

Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits, such as your recent edits to McCrae's Battalion, as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. Mutt Lunker (talk) 15:13, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merely changed a category, just one page among several while cleaning up 'Category:Scottish Military History'. As there are existing categories for 'Regiments of Scotland' and 'Military units and formations in Scotland', individual regiments/units should not be duplicated in the higher tier 'military history' category.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickfive (talkcontribs)
Your change was thus neither minor nor correct as a battalion is a smaller unit than a regiment so does not fit in the Regiments of Scotland category. If you are not sure what constitutes a minor edit, check the link above. Mutt Lunker (talk) 23:12, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Agreed: battalions are subunits of regiments (though often they are one and the same) so McCrae's Battalion should be in the 'military units and formations' category rather than 'regiments of Scotland' sense stricto, though non-specialists will not appreciate the subtle distinction. I was merely cleaning up categories, and marking the change as minor was a slip on my part. Reading the page in more detail it has many more problems than its categorisation.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickfive (talkcontribs)

Non-specialists will certainly not appreciate the distinction between a battalion and a regiment if the former is mis-categorised as the latter when they come to this work of reference. I'm not castigating you for marking the edit as minor, simply making you aware that it was not, drawing your attention to the distinction and informing you that you ought not to mark edits so unless they fit the description. Don't worry about it but do keep it in mind. The article may well have more problems so adding to them isn't desirable. Mutt Lunker (talk) 14:36, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
By the way and while I'm here, it's a good habit to get into to sign your posts on talk pages, using ~~~~, in order to distinguish who said what. Again, not giving you a row but letting you know. Mutt Lunker (talk) 14:49, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

101 (City of London) Engineer Regiment

edit

Just created this one; very few current TA/AR regiments seem to have a page. Any edits with your better sources would be welcome. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 03:03, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well, I looked all around your pages looking for 1 Middlesex Eng Vols, and had no success. Would you be able to just insert the correct name of the 1860 predecessor unit and a ref in that page? That would be great if you could. For your slightly non-standard page, you could always move it to a different name. I'd also advise you to read carefully WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME, because as much as I admire your great effort using the first titles of all these units, our guidelines say we should use the most recent title!! Not suggesting you should change your approach a jot though - these are 'regiments' in the full sense of a regiment/corps. Buckshot06 (talk) 18:12, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Happily do 75 Engineer Regiment (United Kingdom) if you could dump, here or somewhere else, an outline lineage with proper refs. I can get the archived regiments.org site as a supplement. Buckshot06 (talk) 01:22, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

WP:RCAT

edit

Just noticed that you're cleaning up redirects. When you do that, in accordance with WP:RCAT, categories should be there, unless they are wrong. Appropriate categorisation of redirects helps the encyclopedia. Hope all's going well, cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 00:25, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I noticed when I did the redirects for the minor RVCs incorporated into the North Midland Divisional Engineers that a previous batch of Staffordshire RVC redirects had the short titles. I've provided parallel redirects with the full title and the categories, so that the 'Military units and formations in Staffordshire' category will now be consistent. The short title redirect will still point to the main article, but won't appear as a duplicate in the category pages.Rickfive (talk) 13:08, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

56th (King's Own) Anti-Tank Regiment

edit

Can we take advantage of your expertise and get you to take a look at this article? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 06:15, 3 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've had a look. It doesn't look too bad, but I have some other source material so I could do a light clean up, such as clarifying the relationships with the Kings Regiment and the 1st Air Landing Battery, and I can add properly sourced references, including the regimental history. The main missing element is that the 66th A/T, which is mentioned as merging with the 56th in 1945, was itself the duplicate of the 56th formed in 1939.Rickfive (talk) 13:07, 11 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

ISBNs

As you keep reusing the same books in your articles, could you please adjust your ISBNs to use valid ones. For example in, 56th (King's Own) Anti-Tank Regiment. ISBNs are 13 or 10 digits and you have been adding 11 digit numbers. Bgwhite (talk) 00:40, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Confirmed: Brassey's printed an 11-digit ISBN on the flyleaf of Routledge, Anti-Aircraft Artillery. I have checked the entry in the British Library Catalogue and will correct it in future.Rickfive (talk) 13:41, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of regiments of the Royal Artillery

And List of regiments of the Royal Engineers... would you consider helping me put these together? Buckshot06 (talk) 21:46, 22 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Rickfive. If 1947 was the magic year when all the RA regiments were renumbered into a single series, two lists, one pre-1947 and one post-1947, sound best. What exact title should the pre-1947 list be at? This is because it should cover all brigades and regiments up to that point. If that's still too big a list we could do a World War I list as well. Is there any way of getting me a copy of the magic Annex M? Buckshot06 (talk) 20:51, 2 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME

edit

Having just seen you created 54th_Anti-Aircraft_Brigade I need to check whether you are aware of this guideline. Effectively units/formations need to be at their last designation. The page 54 AA Brigade would have (1st Formation)- a whole history of the first 54 AA Bde, and a disbandment/redesignation link to the new unit name, and then (2nd Formation) - history of second brigade. I hesitate to disrupt your fine work like this, but unless you wish to request an exemption from our rules, the pages will need to be reorganised under the last unit designation. Hope I can help you with this. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 01:38, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

The other rule to keep in mind is WP:COMMONNAME, but brigades active for several years after the war should generally go at their last designation - that's the rule. Buckshot06 (talk) 20:23, 10 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Post Office Rifles

edit

I have just added the note (Post Office Rifles) to the 8th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in the World War I section. But is this battalion part of the London Regiment? Was this correct? What's the difference between the Royal Fusiliers and the London Regiment in the First - Second World War period?

The 8th (City of London) Bn London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) and 8th (Service) Bn Royal Fusiliers are different units. The London Regiment battalions still need a lot of work, but the main London Regiment page is pretty accurate now. In summary, the London Regiment formed in 1908 consisted of 28 Territorial battalions, the first eight of which were 'City of London' and the remainder 'County of London'. Of these, the 1st-4th (City of London) Bns were *affiliated* to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment, but not part of its numbered sequence of battalions. The Service Bns of WWI were Kitchener Army , not Territorial units. Post WWI the London Rgt disappeared and the bns reverted to their pre-1908 affiliations. Before and during WWII some were renumbered with this regiment, some were listed separately. Just to make things worse, the 8th Londons merged with the 7th Londons in 1920 and the Post Office Rifles title was moved across to the 7th!Rickfive (talk) 10:00, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ah-ha, I should have remembered; Service battalions were war-formed units. My source was a recruiting postcard, labelled '8th Battalion, City of London Regiment' Post Office Rifles. So the recruiting postcard was wrong to put 'City of London Regiment' rather than 'London Regt' on the poster? Buckshot06 (talk) 21:36, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yep, as is often the case, sloppy use of nomenclature leads to confusion for later folk. There are plenty of good sources on the London Regiment – Regiments.org [2] is a useful quick guide.Rickfive (talk) 10:41, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

WPMILHIST tagging on your articles

edit

Hey Rickfive,

at first let me say thank you for working on military history articles. You´re creating quite a lot in regards to the British land forces, which, as you probably already know, is relevant to the British military history task force of WikiProject Military History. Now it would be helpful if you, when creating your articles, could also create a respective talk page with the project template {{WPMILHIST}}, be it with or without taskforces, so that the page will automatically appear in the project's article lists. There it can gain attention of other editors within the project who can work on improving it and assess its current state on the project's quality scale. Just a suggestion of course. 7 AA Brigade (Malta) and 7 Army Group Royal Artillery

edit

It is my belief, based on the sources available, that there's no 'lineage link' between 7 AA Brigade in Malta and 7 AGRA, and thus 7 Air Defence Group should not list any data on 7 AA Brigade in Malta. What do you think? Buckshot06 (talk) 08:15, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

1st Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers

edit

Being interested in unit lineages, I was pleasantly surprised to find a growing list of British Artillery Volunteers on Wikipedia.

From Westlake's "Tracing the Rifle Volunteers", I created charts: https://hcvv.home.xs4all.nl/milweb/Great-Britain/TAinfantry/index.html. Using the Artillery pages, I am trying to do the same for the Artillery Volunteers.

I am a new Wikipedia contributor (did some anonymous typo editing earlier, but only today created an account) and I may be wrong, but I get the idea that you are a main contributor to these pages. When I am wrong, please direct me to the correct way or person to ask my questions.

On the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Cinque_Ports_Artillery_Volunteers I understand that after the first, rather complex, changes in 1860 and after additions until 1867, there were 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 AVC. Nevertheless the article states that on consolidation the batteries are formed from 1 - 9 AVC. What (and in particular when) occurred this renumbering?

Second, the page says that there was: 2nd AVC raised at Ramsgate 2 January 1860; designated 1st C in August 1860. and also: 2nd AVC raised at Sandwich 13 February 1860; designated 4th in May 1860; re-designated 2nd in August 1860 This would mean that from 13 February until May there were 2 AVCs with the number 2nd. Is that true and was it an administrative error made in 1860?

Also, The 3rd was created at Walmer 6 February 1860. When I interprete correct, it must be the 5th in the consolidation list, but that is located at Deal. There is no mentioning of this move in the page.

Thanks in advance for any answers,

Henk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henk-wkp (talkcontribs) 08:34, 24 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

1st Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers

edit

I see the renumbering in 1870 is mentioned now. Thanks a lot.

BTW, in the mean time I found that information in http://web.archive.org/web/20071128003924/http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/volmil-england/varty/ke-cp.htm Likewise it says there: 1st C Cinque Port Artillery Volunteer Corps at Ramsgate, raised 2 Jan .1860 as 2nd Cinque Ports AVC [not listed until May 1860]; increased to two btys Apr(?). 1860; redesignated Aug. 1860 as 1st C Corps which explains why there were two 2nd AVCs at the same tine.

Pre Second World War British regiments - where were the 3rd and 4th Battalions

edit

Going into World War II and in descriptions of what regiments did in the war, often either the 3rd or 4th Battalions seem to be missing (eg A&SH). Can you explain the numbering scheme for battalions in the 1920s and 1930s, and maybe add it to British infantry or suchlike with a reference? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 21:09, 9 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Something was niggling at the back of my brain - 3rd Battalion (Special Reserve). That may account for the 3rd Battalions. Nevertheless, you're in a super much better position than me to insert a pre-1945 section at Infantry of the British Army#History - would you kindly please consider doing so? Dear Rickfive, this is one of J-Man11's articles that I thought might be worth saving if it seemed correct to you. Apart from some minor additions re 56th London Division, which I've made but then started rethinking because that might have disappeared by that time, it may be correct - can you comment? Buckshot06 (talk) 09:47, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear Buckshot06,
I really have very little information on orders of battle post-1947, so this is one that I can't comment on with any confidence. It seems very detailed but with sketchy references. What I can confirm is that 56th (London) Division was broken up in March 1961 and its identity continued by 56th (London) Infantry Brigade (Maj D.K. Edwards, A History of the 1st Middlesex Volunteer Engineers (101 (London) Engineer Regiment, TA) 1860–1967, London, 1967, p. 195.)
This would be a very useful list if it stands up to scrutiny.

Order of Battle

edit

Hi, this is very out of the blue but I've seen you editing in related articles and I wondered whether you might have access to Order of Battle of Divisions Part 5B, by F. W. Perry? I can't find it anywhere, and am writing up a biography on the British Indian Army cavalry officer Henry John Milnes MacAndrew. Would very much like to include any information it has! Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 03:14, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Perry is very hard to find unless you have access to a specialist library like the Imperial War Museum, The National Archives (UK), or the Australian War Memorial. I only have a few snatched photocopies of pages I needed a few years ago. There's currently one copy on ebay, none on Abebooks or Amazon, and Ray Westlake's publishing business seems to have closed down. In any case, a quick check suggests that almost all the information in Perry is already transcribed into the orders of battle and lists of commanders in the brigade and divisional pages on Wikipedia. Not very helpful, I'm afraid, but the best that I can suggest. Rickfive (talk) 15:22, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Agh, very frustrating! Annoyingly while the British Indian Army has some nice OOBs here, the individual unit pages and more specifically the lists of commanders are very bare. I don't know when exactly Macandrew took command of 2nd Indian Cavalry Division in 1916/17, or what the name of the brigade he commanded beforehand even was! Thanks nonetheless; I'll persevere! About 43rd (Howitzer) Brigade Royal Field Artillery

edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give 43rd (Howitzer) Brigade Royal Field Artillery a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into 43rd (Howitzer) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you.

Thank you. Hello,

When you added "Army List" as a source, you failed to record the year of the document, and the page references. Can you please amend the article Special Reserve so this is rectified.

Thanks in advance. Keith H99 (talk) 14:40, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
