Wandering about edit

I'll be wandering mostly sans internet connections till July 31st. Until then .....

I know you're here! edit

You know we're friends but I have to address your hypocrisy. How can you support the name Burma but not Mahatma Gandhi? Both cases are bout common use not the "actual" name. Beam 15:27, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Beam, that's pretty harsh. Burma was changed to Myanmar by an totalitarian military regime. The name change is still not recognized by a majority its people. There is a lot of bitterness there. That really isn't the case with Gandhi. - Amog | Talkcontribs 15:36, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
What? It doesn't matter who recognizes it, Wikipedia deals with reality. If Wikipedia didn't deal with common use the name of that article would be Myanmar because... that's the country's name. See the whole debate at the Burma talk page. (btw I support the name Burma because it's the common name). The same standard should be held to Gandhi.Beam 15:44, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Still here Beam. Leaving tomorrow but rather busy. I do intend responding on the Burma cabal page though (before I leave)!--Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 17:31, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The ruling military junta changed its name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989, a year after thousands were killed in the suppression of a popular uprising. Rangoon also became Yangon.
A statement by the (British) Foreign Office says: "Burma's democracy movement prefers the form 'Burma' because they do not accept the legitimacy of the unelected military regime to change the official name of the country. Internationally, both names are recognised." Ref BBC - Should it be Burma or Myanmar? - Amog | Talkcontribs 16:31, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. So you agree with me? Beam 17:30, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not entirely. You claimed that though Myanmar is the official name, the article uses Burma due to popular reference. However this news report claims that Myanmar isn't the official name/ Burma is just as official.Hence the Wikipedia deals with reality argument doesn't hold. - Amog | Talkcontribs 17:35, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe you missed the whole argument over the Burma name. The ONLY reason it's Burma is because of common name. The government of the country being legitimate has NOTHING to do with it at all. Wikipedia doesn't care if the government is just, or democratically elected, the government gets to name the country. Beam 17:58, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey guys, I'm not RegentsPark by a long shot, but do you really want to spill the Burmyanmar discussion over his talk page like this? Especially since you seem to reach the same conclusion? :-) -BaronGrackle (talk) 18:07, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
We could move the entire discussion here! (BaronGrackle, are you a sock of RegentsPark?) --Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 18:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

(undent) NOOOOOOOOOOO! The discussion was about Mahatma Gandhi. I'm going to go cry now, bye. Beam 18:23, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The best laid plans of mice and men... (RegentsPark, you bet! And Beamathan's a sock of me. In fact, the entire Burmyanmar 8-month controversy consists only a single user, arguing back and forth. That's the problem with the Gandhi disagreement; I think there might be a second user somewhere in that discussion.) -BaronGrackle (talk) 18:30, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I knew I was a sock. I JUST KNEW IT!!!Beam 21:00, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't wear socks. Neither did Einstein [citation needed]. Anyhow, my argument is, these naming issues are worlds apart. We're arguing on Gandhi's naming due to popularity... while Burma is legitimacy. - Amog | Talkcontribs 04:01, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well then you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. :) Beam 10:36, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, since we're just shooting the breeze here... I hear "Mohandas" about as often as I hear "Mahatma". (runs away quickly) -BaronGrackle (talk) 05:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
And to you, as I've told others, you're a liar. Go look at google searches. You have to be lying, or you hang out with people who are snobs. Normal people, and I'd go as far as to say "good" people, don't know his name is Mohandas. Where as, no offense, you're more than likely to find people like "you" calling him Mohandas. But, thank God, there aren't a lot of people like "you" in the world. Maybe 10. Beam 10:36, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah..I'm starting to hear people say that a lot. I'm beginning to think this isn't a fight worth fighting. - Amog | Talkcontribs 05:49, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, since I have policy on my side, and evidence on my side, and the WILL OF GOD on my side, I'm going to keep fighting until the right thing is done. And as you exhibited with your "legitimacy" comment above, I'm not sure you understand the policy around here. Good day. Beam 10:36, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
"Normal people, and I'd go as far as to say "good" people, don't know his name is Mohandas." Then it's high time they found out. - Amog | Talkcontribs 12:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

(undent) Obviously I was joking around with grackcle but it's really evident that he's most well known as Mahatma Gandhi, which is what the article should be called. lol I keep saying that! Beam 19:06, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re. Burma/Myanmar edit

Thank you for reporting the newest chapter of this never-ending story. I think the RFC was in order, and so is this proposal. However, you're quite right that the closing bureaucrat should not have expressed a prior preference for one of the sides. I'll contact him. Regards, Húsönd 16:26, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Assessment drive edit

Thanks for letting me know. It won't be closed by then - earliest finish will be mid-July. Regards - Ncmvocalist (talk) 09:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Current Events Portal, India edit

I have been updating this section occasionally. I encountered a problem today. I added some information in this page Portal:Current events/India/2008 June 25. But the content which is automatically displayed in the "India in this week section" in this page was not displayed today. I again opened the first link, but the information that I had added was present there. What can be done in this regard?Rohit Reddy™ (talk) 05:33, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Burma edit

Okay, I have created Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation/Burma. I have added you along with added 18 other users (including myself) to the list of involved parties. The ones I have listed are ones who have commented recently, or who commented on the Mediation Cabal case (except if they solely made a neutral comment). If you disagree with me listing you there, remove yourself from it if you wish. If you feel someone else should be involved, add/ask them. I hope those I have added are alright though. I also hope this step is what finally ends this dispute! Deamon138 (talk) 00:30, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can you help? edit

I see you were listed as a participant in the League of Copy-Editors so it seems likely. The thing is the Military history wikiproject urgently needs prose pros to help with our best articles. Milhist covers a broad range of interesting and varied subjects from film to biography, battles to weaponry, and Roman emperors to twentieth-century dictators. In Milhist, A-Class has become the last port of call before FAC and we are looking for people to help identify prose and MoS issues at A-Class A-Class Reviews and help fix them prior to featured article candidacy. We also have a copy-editing section in our Logistics Dept and that can always use experienced copy-editors. For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.

If you think you can help, please do! Thanks for your time, --ROGER DAVIES talk 03:51, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

First, thank you very much for responding to the call. I'm sorry it's taken a bit of time to get back to you but I've got the builders in at home (and they're causing chaos) and I've got very behind.
Second, we need help on a couple of levels. we are so short of good copy-editors, partly because of the large number of Milhist articles at PR and FAC, that we're trying to concentrate on A-Class reviews and featured article candidates. I've taken the liberty of transcluding our new tracker template, listing the applicable articles. To add this to your user pages independently of this message, simply cut and paste {{WPMILHIST Copy-editing alerts}} to the required location.
A-Class - copy-tasting / reviewing
We are currently trying to improve the depth and quality of the Milhist A-Class review. What will help here considerably is copy-tasting. That is, reviewing an article and commenting on the style and prose. Clarity, longwindedness (the bane of Milhist), grammar, mixing and matching WP:ENGVAR varieties, MoS stuff (especially dashes), date formatting etc. (Any subsequent copy-editing would be a very welcome and helpful bonus!) Input on any current A-Class candidate would be helpful.
Copy-editing pre-FA and FA candidates
Editors normally take articles go from ACR to FAC, usually via a request for a copy-edit. These requests are usually made here or by leaving messages on copy-editors talk pages. You can respond to requests there or list yourself as a copy-editor so that others may contact you. Either would be very much appreciated. Additionally, a frequent reason for opposition is prose and some hands-on copy-editing of FA candidates would be enormously helpful. (If you do subsequently support the article, please do remember to disclose the copy-edit: ie Support (as copy-editor) though you may prefer simply to Comment that a copy-edit has been done.)
I do hope you can help and that this grows into a longer-term commitment. We are working very hard to set the bar for quality with Milhist articles and quality copy-editing is an essential part of this. With apologies again for the tardy reply, --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:34, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request edit

Hello Regents Park. Was wondering if I could ask you for a favour. I was looking for comments on India House, which is listed for PR, but I haven't really recieved much input. KnowledgeHegemony (who I asked for comments) suggested listing it for WP:LOCE, and since you are on the list, I was wondering if you would mind having a look through it. I am not trying to canvass, but just looking to improve it to a sufficient level before it can be listed for FAC. Hope you can help. Cheers rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 13:10, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's with your recent user talk links in your signature ("Burma 8-8-08")? Prediction for a revolution?! BigBlueFish (talk) 17:22, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just tongue in cheek - mixed with hope! You never know. Plus, I actually think that the days of the junta are numbered. I haven't seen such disenchantment with their rulers and their country amongst the Burmese (I was there a couple of weeks ago) since the mid 1990s. --Regents Park (paddle with the ducks) 20:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Let's hope so... but the same can be said for Zimbabwe and Tibet, so we'll see... BigBlueFish (talk) 21:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The most likely scenario is that nothing changes. But, there is something different out there this time so who knows. --Regents Park (paddle with the ducks) 22:54, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

First !vote cancelled edit

When the first !vote in a list is cancelled, the # in front of it and all comments have to be removed in order to get the numbering correct. Otherwise, it reads the new first !vote as the second one.---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 22:49, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

That explains it. I tried to do the same thing that rudget did but (obviously!) got different results. --Regents Park (paddle with the ducks) 22:53, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Articles Needing Copy Edit edit

Hello former LOCE member :)

This is an invitation for you to join a brand-new WikiProject that aims to improve the articles tagged for copy edit. This is pretty important to Wikipedia because there are now over 4,000 such articles, some of which need quite a bit of help. This is not a clone of the LOCE because we will not deal with requests for copy edits, but will happily make improvements to articles at our own pace. If you're interested, sign up at the project page!
