Hi - India related links

Am not sure if you had these links with you under your previous user name, so am inserting them here - just saw your query on INWNB and I feel that, keeping in with the times, we should outsource it to adept people ;) --Gurubrahma 13:15, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Help needed

I just moved the exceptional newcomer award to my userpage. But now the next section starts beside the image and not under it. How do I make it go under the image. --Lost 11:29, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, simply insert <br style="clear:both" /> after the image code and you should get the results you want. Cheers, Tangotango 11:32, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Lost! I have just been blocked and I am quite relieved, because I have a pretext for not editing. You know...I have been making small changes to wikipedia for over a year. My interest areas are India, all the Indian religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism. Personally though, I do not follow any religion. The talk pages of most of these articles are full of hate spam and therefore I was dissuaded from signing up. I was too scared to get involved into heated arguments, initiated mostly by fundamentalists. It just spoils the fun of visiting wikipedia, which is otherwise my favourite place to spend time. Only recently I decided to sign up...thought that having a talk page would help in a higher degree of collaboration with other wiki colleagues. But here I am getting involved in an argument. It is very upsetting. It was my bad luck that by accident I stumbled upon the Khalistan article and was too upset by the state of the article. I have no allegiance or contempt towards any community but I do have a lot of contempt for people who burn other people's houses to warm their hands. The problem in Punjab was solely attributable to such persons who encouraged other people to kill innocent civilians. All this while these people were themselves away from India in their comfortable homes in Europe, U.S. and Canada. Jagjit Singh Chauhan is one such example. Ripudaman Singh Malik is another. In those days, India did not matter in the International arena and most developed nations did their best to destablize India. In the process many innocent Indians have paid with their lives and those of their loved ones, some of who were the sole bread earners of the family. I can quote three times more sources than there already are in the article...just that I do not have the time right now. By the way, look at the quoted sources and you would realize the quality of the citations.

As for the Khalistan article, please note that before I started editing, it seemed as if the article is straight from the website of the Khalistan Liberation Force. All my edits are in good faith and I will continue reverting POV stuff once the block is lifted.

Till then thanks and have a nice day.

(my reply from his talk page) Hi Anwar, I am sorry that I could not reply earlier. I was busy editing another article and also in the real world. First of all, I am very relieved to see that you are back on wikipedia despite a block and didnt take it to heart.
I have read the Khalistan article myself quite some time back and also read the lengthy discussions on the talk page. I took a conscious decision to stay away from not only this but a few other contentious articles where I thought I would be adding too much of my own POV as I do have some strong opinions but little factual knowledge of the subject.
To see you and Thomas gave me lots of hope that two neutral parties may bring the article to a nice NPOV version. It was unfortunate that both of you got blocked for an article which you had good intentions for.
I do believe that your edits were in good faith and also that our friend Thomas was trying to maintain the citations as a neutral third party.
In a ligher vain, while recalling the debate, it did strike me as interesting that here we were, belonging to three different religions, hotly debating a topic which may be closer to a fourth religion!!
Please let me know if I can be of help on anything. I will try my best to help. -- Lost 17:50, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi!

Hi! Lost. Thanks for your message...and yes I am back. The block actually helped me take a break. I am sure it was very much within the wikipedia policy and I respect that. I have seen a lot of essays in the garb of articles on wikipedia that are used by fundametalists to advance thier nefarious motives. This just strenghtened my resolve to rid false anti-India propoganda. For me, religion is higher that community, country is higher than all religions, truth is higher than everything else. I have plenty of material on Punjab. Infact I do not need any source to write this article. Yet I am actively hunting for sources to provide neutral citations. I have already done some work on the Khalistan article since morning. You will see that the article will gradually take a pretty reasonable shape soon. Inshah-ALLAH.

And yes you can help...by NOT staying away from contentious articles, especially on India. You and I have an obligation to help, and if we do not intervene, truth will remain obscured. :-)

Thank you very much for your continued support. Jai Hind. AnwarA 18:41, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

(My reply copied from his talk page)::Don't worry. I have no intention of staying away from contentious articles if I have knowledge on the subject. Especially if I see blatant vandalism on such articles, I revert it very quickly. If it's POV, I usually take my time and try to be more thorough before jumping in. You can check the respective state-level categories to see the list that you want. For example Category:Cities and towns in Maharashtra. Look for sandbox articles that start with character 'U'. Once the merge and uncat is done, they will gone from the categories. Hope that explains. Thanks for the working on the list. I am going on a wikibreak. Locator map accuracy

The towns on the border are kind of tricky. The dot is too big and the map is not 100% accurate. It just helps locate the general area. The locator needs the exact left, right, top and bottom and coordinates for it to be 100%. I just guessed those numbers. Nichalp and Deeptrivia mentioned this before. If you happen to know to exact the numbers, I can update them. BTW, great job with HP towns. - Ganeshk (talk) 18:27, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Lost. Thanks for your revert to my talk page - it seems to be happening a lot yesterday that my computer logged me about about 25% of the time that I clicked a button. Anyway thanks for your support on the Srikeit RfA, and if you had my page on your watchlist, that's rather surprising how many people have it there. Anyway, since I'm involved in patrolling a four way religious and personal attack dispute at Shiv Sena and Babri Mosque amongst others, I've started a religion survey on my talk page, to see if I am obviously biased or not. Hello Lostintherush. Thanks for the userpage revert. I'm getting popular I think? Copyvios

If the copyvio is not in the current sections, then there is no need to worry. A lot of people drop by and cut and paste stuff from cricinfo into cricket articles, and they are just removed. If there is only copyrighted text and no original text then it would have to be deleted. In this case, it appears the copyvio has been superseded, so I don't think there is a problem. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 02:17, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Hullo

Greetings.

Just read your message. Well, to tell you the truth, I know some points about the two personalities you have mentioned.

I know that Maharaja Bhupinder Singh - also called Maharaja Bhupinder the Magnificient, the father of Yadavindrah Singh, was a six foot four inch tall figure, with a beard that was always tightly rolled in a net. His most (in)famous contribution to the Royal House of Patiala, was a harem, which added greatly to the mystique of the Maharajaahs as they were called in the West.

About Lord Horatio Kitchener, well the most famous aspect that I remember about him was that after the Anglo-Boer War(1899-1902), he ordered the victorious British troops to burn Boer homesteads en masse and had old Boer men, women and children herded into compact structures, where many died due to starvation and neglect. The name given to these structures, would become infamous throughout the world forty years later when the Nazis overran Europe - Concentration Camps.

About Chail, well I know as much as you do that Bhupinder built a palace here. I am sorry, but I don't have any idea about l'affaire Bhupinder and Kitchener's daughter.

Give me a day or two. I can definitely try to find out.

Reply from Thanatosil

Hi...I got your message on my talk page (thanks for launching it by the way!), but I'm confused. The edit I made was just to the formatting for the stub tag on Zira so that it would show up with the phrase "This article about a location in the Indian state of Punjab is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it"...as it was coded, the template wasn't expanding.

Did I help or harm your effort? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thanatosil (talkcontribs)

Ok, now I understand what you did and mostly why, but what is the reasoning behind not completely removing the stub tag instead of leaving it display as 'IndianPunjab-stub' in the article text? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thanatosil (talkcontribs)

I have replied on the user's talk page. - Ganeshk (talk) 19:55, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Castes and Tribes of the Punjab

Hi. I am asking your opinion on this festering dispute that has developed between myself and Satbir Singh since the past few days.

The facts of the matter are like this:

I created a template called Castes and Tribes of the Punjab with a view to studying the caste and tribal groups that exist in what was the ancient Punjab region (Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab (India), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). My intention, unlike any Ibbetsons, Todds or Cunninghams was to study these groups from a purely anthropological perspective sans any controversy so that people visiting this portal would get to know about the huge mosaic that my province (I am a Punjabi) is.

I started with a few groups. But soon enough the groups began to increase. For the sake of brevity, I grouped them under Categories. As the template evolved, I learnt not to name any category speculatively.

The final categories were:

Brahmin groups. Dalit groups. Jat clans. Khatris and other groups. Rajput clans. Shaikhs and other groups. Tarkhans and other groups. Others (groups to which i could not attribute any specific status). In the last (Others), I also included groups such as Kamboj, Khasa, Ahir and Gujjar. However, Satbir Singh separated them and bunched them under a new category called "Surviving Ancient Kshatriya Tribes".

Since that day, a revert war has been on between the two of us. According to Satbir, these groups such as the Ahirs (the ancient Abhiras), the Gujjars (Gurjaras), the Khas (the Khasas), the Kamboj (Kambojas) and Yadav (Yadavas) are ancient Kshatriya tribes mentioned in a number of ancient Sanskrit texts.

My own personal opinion is that all this is true. However, some points must be noted:

The Varna System is a topic subject to a lot of controversy and dispute. I have been noticing this in recent weeks. Pages such as Khatri, Rajput, Kayastha and Bhumihar have been vandalised because many people don't agree with the Varna status of these groups. If the Ahirs, the Gujjars, the Khasaa, the Kambojas and the Yadavas are Kshatriya groups, then so are the Rajputs, Jats, Khatris, Tarkhans et al. I did not create a category entitled "Kshatriya groups" in the first place because I knew I was treading on soft ground. All the above mentioned castes claim Kshatriya status. But we all know, how disputable these claims are. The rigmarole that is the Varna System is known to us all. For example, the Jats, who in the Vedic and Mythological periods were workers should be placed in the Shudra Category under the Varna System. But many Jats clans consider themselves the equal and perhaps the superior of Rajputs as adhrents of Kshatriya Dharma. My own caste, the Khatris and related groups such as Aroras claim Kshatriya status. But we have seen on the Khatri page as to what became of that claim. Ahirs, Gujjars and Yadavs are considered to be OBCs in most Indian states inspite of their being the descendants of ancient Abhiras, Gurjaras and Yadus. There is a controversy raging on the Yadav page presently if I am not wrong, on the status of the caste. Taking all these points into consideration and being aware of the fact that there are users (say Sanjay Mohan and Holywarrior, who have caused great disputes on various caste pages, I proposed categories such as "Kambojs and related groups" (Kamboj, Kamboja, Kamboh and Khasa) and "Gujjars and realted groups" (Ahirs, Gujjars, Dhangars and Bakarwals). But Satbir Singh and another user named Sze cavalry01 objected to it. They returned to "Ancient Kshatriya Tribes". I did a little compromise by making it "Ancient Warrior Tribes", which I later realised would also be POV. Therefore, I changed it to just "Ancient Tribes" - A completely unspeculative term.

However, Satbir Singh does not agree. He calls it a "gross suppression of known historical facts", "a crime against history" and "a political agenda" and has termed me a "Vandal". I have put forward my points. But both of us are yet to agree.

I have fighting a revert war with him for almost a week now. Have a look at the template's history page and Satbir Singh's talk page to get a complete idea of the whole fracas.

This fight has become downright silly. I surely don't expect myself to spend my time, money and energy on such a silly matter. And I am sure neither does the other party.

As of now, Administrator Shresth has protected the page on my request. He has also asked that the dispute be discussed on the talk page of the template and a consensus be reached. Yourself and anybody else you know who has an interest in the Punjab, please come and express your opinion on the talk page. Even if the Punjab is not your area of interest, the dispute is still an NPOV dispute. So please express your thoughts.
