The Real World

In answer to your question, I believe they referred to it as a Winnebago in the series, but the Winnebago article indicates that a Winnebago is an RV. Nightscream (talk) 05:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Right, Winnebago is a brand name for a particular kind of RV. Much like the words "kleenex" (a brand of tissue) and "band-aid" (a brand of adhesive bandage), it has become a sort of generic term for an RV, even though it's still a brand name. If the RV they are using is actually a Winnebago, then that's what it is. If not, we should probably call it an RV. About the Deletion of the ANTM Cycle Statistics Sections...

Instead of simply deleting them outright, perhaps you could check the sources and remove the information that doesn't have a source. For example, the "call-out average" category (among many other categories) is accurate; that information comes straight from the call-out tables, which, of course, are taken from the episodes themselves. As for the other information, such as heights and weights, perhaps a source should be found for each before considering deletion. I understand that the heights and weights of the contestants from the first six cycles were available on the UPN website, which has since been shut down. However, it shouldn't be difficult to get information about the contestants of the subsequent five.

I, for one, like the "Cycle Statistics" sections. They're easier to analyze than the call-out tables, and I enjoy the availability of the comparisons. It's a shame to see them deleted just because of a lack of sources.

...because, as I already said if you bothered to read, it's written in the main survivor article and I think it's a relevant point. I have found some sources for it but they are against wikipedia policy. ie, from blog sites. If it isn't allowed, then I will remove it from the main article then. Please tell me "If you already have your own webpage, it doesn't seem necessary to have one on Wikipedia." was in error and/or haste. This is a total misunderstanding of the purpose of Wikipedia. Virtually all of our subjects have their own websites, because they're notable in their fields and notable institutions, in any field, tend to have their own web presence. In assessing any article, the core thing you need to look at is whether it is verifiable from reliable sources; in a case like this, that would be hairdressing trade publications and possibly fashion magazines. (Of all the alphabet soup of allcaps acronyms that get flung around Wikipedia, that's one of the few that's an outright policy; even the much-cited notability guideline is just, as the name suggests, a vague guideline.) This article appears to have multiple, independent, non-trivial sources; in this case, it's down to those wanting it deleted to make a case for deletion, not the other way round. – iridescent 20:38, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

It sounds like my comment was taken out of context. My point was that simply having a website doesn't entitle a shop to have an article on wikipedia. However, sources are important, and a source other than the shop's own webpage would be helpful. In this case, there does appear to be some external references. However, this is not clear given the structure of the article in question. Since you care so deeply about it, perhaps you could fix it? Thanks for your input. Sorry, what needs fixing? It's all clearly referenced using inline citations (I've checked them all out and they all work). I can't see what the problem is here; if the author were planning on taking this to FA or GA it would need a separate reference section, but that's only 0.739% of our articles; for the remaining 99.261% it's not an issue. – iridescent 00:21, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

You can safely assume I'm familiar with our guidelines and policies and that you don't need to make (inaccurate) explanations to me. There is no need for a reference section unless you plan to take an article to GA/FA. There is no need for an external link section unless you plan to take an article to GA/FA. There is nothing to suggest that the link you mention is meant to be an external citation as opposed to an attempt to insert a wikilink by a new account who isn't familiar with the vagaries of MediaWiki syntax. The MOS is a vague guideline and not any kind of policy for any level of article on our arbitrary assessment scale (hence the big "this is only a guideline and should not be taken as policy" warning at the top of every MOS subpage). And if you'd spent half the time you've spent biting this newcomer and attempting to defend it afterwards, actually fixing all these issues, then I wouldn't be wasting my time and yours with this discussion. – iridescent 00:39, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

I had no idea that Ray J even had a show. And yeah I look at the history and it's clear that the page we toiled over was simply copied and posted into a new page. I guess I'm leaving a comment back at the AFD about this because (ahem) One bad apple shouldn't spoil the bunch. Specially if the bunch is a show that has been confirmed for months.

OK, I found this page (Wikipedia:Refactoring_talk_pages) that says that refactoring seems to be about tidying up, removing unnecessary content, etc. I'm not aware that I did that, and if I did, it's unintentional. Intentions of Lament

True, but when removing a prod, the editor should state a reason in the edit summary, as per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion#Contesting a proposed deletion. It's something that I have been developing (User:Plastikspork/monobook.js/script.js) after stumbling upon the Lightmous script (User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js). I don't recommend anyone else using it right now without extreme care as it's constantly in flux. Basically, I wrote it to automate the repetitive tasks listed (whitespace removal, table formatting, link repair). I am considering releasing a less aggressive version for public consumption. If there is a tedious editing task that you are interested in automating, let me know and I might be able to help you write a script. There is currently an injunction against some of these scripts (mostly if they are operated in unassisted mode), in particular for date-unlinking. Sure. I need to figure out what parts of my script are completely uncontroversial and safe, and which are just part of my own personal taste. I'll let you know when I have something I'm happy to have people test. My script is similar to Lightmouse in that it always shows you the diff and it's up to you to commit the changes. I have a slight worry that since the move some of the references and links might not work correctly when reading the article via a redirected page (for example if you spelt the name wrong and arrived via the "Sidney Selwyn" redirect) however I might be mistaken about that so need to do some test before being sure.

The page move created a redirect, so if someone links to Professor Sydney Selwyn it will act exactly the same as if it were linked to Sidney Selwyn or Sydney Selwyn. The only difference is the "redirected from" text at the top of the page. If you want to see what links to a page, there is a "what links here" option in the toolbox on the lefthand side of the page. I typically use this after page moves to eliminate double redirects. If there are other "plausible" mis-spellings, you can create redirects for those as well. Oh ok. It sounds slightly complicated but I think I understand. When you have the time please let me know about the COI and 'refimprove' tags as it would be nice to remove them once you're comfortable. Hi, just to let you know I've received a couple of emails back from relevant people who didn't want to update the article directly themselves but have suggested some useful corrections (largely typing mistakes but not only). I'll collate and implement these when I next have some time. Also I plan to go through the article carefully and add further references and citations as you have suggested.

You mentioned in your comment for your recent edit that you were still concerned about possible POV. Can you give me a few clues and pointers please so I can look into it and either clarify or tidy up those sections as required (however it may just need referencing to sources?).

DOB citations (Conan, Jay, etc.)

I don't think most articles on really famous people have sources for their DOBs and such. It's almost impossible to find a reliable source on the internet. And the introductory paragraph is almost never sourced. Belasted (talk) 05:16, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I have seen these citations for articles which make it to WP:GA or even WP:FA status. Not citing this information is not inline with WP:BLP. The problem is that many cites use WP as a source, and "generally accepted" information can be fabricated. A good source for this information is often the agency which represents the person. With regard to my recent addition to Eric Nies' actions on the show Confessions of a Teen Idol, although the practice of using urine for holistic purposes in itself is a disturbing concept for most of us to comprehend, my statement was neither negative or controversial biographical material, it is actually true documented public fact.

Here is the video footage from Episode 4 (act 1) of "Confessions of a Teen Idol" found on VH1's website in which not only does Eric demonstrate his unusual practice in front of the camera and a fellow roommate, but in act 4 of the same episode, goes on to defend his holistic beliefs.[1]

The video and link above "[1]" will prove my statement which was nothing more than factual, and in no way damaging according to Mr Nies himself. Please scroll to 00:23 - 01:19 in the video clip.

Based on his own statements in this video...in no way does Eric think there is anything wrong with his own actions so I wouldn't consider my addition to be harming him or his reputation at all.

I hope this addition is not withheld from Wikipedia as the world relies heavily on this site for factual information.

Since I am assuming you are new to editing Wikipedia (account just created about 30 minutes ago), I can try to help. What you should do is start a new section on Talk:Eric Nies, and present your view that this information should be included. Creating an account is good, since it shows you are committed. In my opinion, the problem is that his article is very short, and we would be careful to not put undue weight. You might want to spend some time reading WP:BLP and WP:RS. Don't give up. I'm confident you will get the hang of things, but you might want to start a tad bit slower, and spend some time reading the WP guidelines. Recently created WP:SPA accounts are a red flag and often cause knee-jerk reactions, like trying to delete your account. Also, not adding WP:RS with your information is problematic, especially for a WP:BLP. Let me know if I can answer any more questions, or be of any help. Because of incompetance

re: this (edit summary) query

... or imho, more likely the lack of maturity and professionalism... coupled with blindly following bad guidelines... a year back when the merger took place.

• The links were to allow appropriate data mining the great majority of information that was not merged when the articles were raped. That was normally placed in {{also starring}} as you can see by many completed episode summaries in about four seasons of work. Talk discussions on my talk and some others should fill in the backdrop.
  • The template needs a mere case change (as was the plan... see discussions 2-3 weeks back, my talk) in a single letter (or similar logic override) to make the links all vanish into the bit bucket... so the method is documenting the old article this way as well.
  • In the meantime, the links enabled finding the right article page via history, E, or C options combined with the names, and so fix ups of the redirects to point to the new page sections covering the page.
  • I'm afraid I'll never buy into the idea that one overly long page is superior to a short page sufficiently covering a topic.
• Someone put an awful lot of time into the series, and was totally disrespected.
• But so was I when I made my displeasure plain... so I'm not working to clean it up anymore. My time is too valuable.

If the template would have taken the "revision id", instead of the full URL, I would have never noticed it. • • WHERE'S it written cutting and pasting the thread on BOTH talk pages is prohibited? (My preference, others snooping have immediate context, the whole message, and the time to ping an addy or the text is moot and mostly washes.
  • I generally do an edit summary linking to the talk recipients page, after prepping the answer on mine, then before closing, cut that, traverse to their page, paste it down, and save. Then back space then save there on my page... with occasional curlicues like italicising his or her paragraphs and adjusting indentations to match, works fast.
  • And is to me, the most courteous way to go.

Your edits to David Letterman

First, you title the section "Allegations of sexism", but no such allegations are made at all in the Newsvine article you cited, only that he made a joke about Katie Couric being on Rachel Ray. Second, Letterman isn't even mentioned in the Susan Estrich Fox News op-ed piece. You wrote "This offended some viewers, who pointed out that Couric was the first female anchor of a major network news broadcast". Neither the "viewers" who were "offended" by the Rachel Ray joke nor their collective "pointing out" is mentioned in that piece. So I really don't understand why you included this. Third, in the Greta Van Sustren transcript, although it is titled "Is it sexist?", oddly they do not actually accuse him of being sexist. They accuse him of being "creepy", "condescending", "ignorant", and "stupid". The only things that those cites you provided show is that Letterman made jokes about Katie Couric and Sarah Palin and that Van Sustren and Mary Matalin were offended by one of them. Lastly, I am not sure if Newsbusters is considered WP:RS but even if it is, I don't think that is enough to devote a section titled "Allegations of sexism" based on an op-ed piece. Mysterious template

The idea is to replace sequential non-breaking spaces, A&nbsp;B&nbsp;C with the {{nowrap|A B C}} template. However, many of these templates break if there is {{{1}}} inside. The fix is to use the = template. You can read more about it in the nowrap template documentation. One can debate if x&nbsp;=&nbsp;y is shorter (or easier to read) than say {{nowrap|x {{=}} y}}. I personally find the nowrap version easier to read. Of course, none if this is necessary in math mode. There is also the nbsp template which is useful when you need sequential non-breaking spaces. I looked through each of the references, and if the citation did not support the statement, I removed the citation, and replaced it with the "citation needed tag". You have probably already read WP:RS and WP:BLP. Simply citing an organizations webpage, or a persons Zoominfo page, or the main webpage of a ratings service, are not examples of citations which support statements. Let me know if you have any questions or further comments. Again, thank you for your work in trying to improve this page. I feel the subject is notable, or I wouldn't be so interested in making sure it's factual. What I (we) do not understand is as I stated before, why it seems you are flagging every thing and not other in his field. i.e., You want proof of his date of birth?? In a good WP:BLP, every single statement should be cited. The guidelines for WP:RS in a WP:BLP are much more strict than for other articles. If a person is notable, it is usually fairly easy to find secondary RS as these people have articles in newspapers, biographies in the NYT, etc... To answer your more specific queries (1) Yes, proof via a RS is needed for his DOB, see Jay Leno for example. (2) His fathers name is either not relevant or can be cited using a secondary source. (3) The fact that he is a radio and TV host is not being disputed, although citation would be good for that as well. (3) With regard to the ratings, read the posted copyright warning for Nielsen Media. So, unless you can find a secondary source for this information, it cannot be included. (4) If you want to appeal, you can follow the instructions on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, there are multiple levels including WP: RFC. I personally don't really have any interest in Conner, I am just striving to make WP a reliable source for finding useful information. Eventually, some admin is bound to get sufficiently tired of it and issue a block. Yes, you did make a useful contribution. The problem is that it needs to be referenced by a WP:RS, and the footnote provided did not support the information being added. There is an easy solution, add the information with a new footnote for a WP:RS. For example, this reference supports Rupert Degas as Scrambler. However, the infobox is already very full, and there is a notice at the top of the page about "too much intricate detail", so perhaps the best solution is to just add Rupert Degas to the list of voices without the detail about who voices which character. Access dates to ymd

Hey there. I had been using a part of your script recently, "Spork: cite date mdy", on pages that were already in mdy formatting but had yyyy-mm-dd access dates. Rlevse objected to my use of it on one of the pages he had been working on, and I offered here to reverse my actions. I wondered if it would be possible to code up a method for changing the cite dates to yyyy-mm-dd. If it would be so possible (or if you think Lightmouse could do it), do you think you could give it a try for me (or tell me to ask him). It would be much appreciated.

I just added "Unspork: cite date", which will change any match to 'date = Month DD, YYYY' or 'date = DD Month YYYY' to 'date = YYYY-MM-DD', which includes both 'date = ' and 'accessdate = '. My script now has eight links, which may be a bit excessive. When I first wrote it, I didn't think anyone else would be using it, but now it appears there are about five people using it. Please let me know if you find any bugs, or any unsafe transformations being made by the script so I can fix it. Fall vs. autumn

I noticed your edit summary here and, while I'm not sure whether it was a sincere question, I thought I'd offer a sincere (possible) answer. Of course the edit could very well have been someone simply testing the waters, so to speak, but it also could have been someone who's not from North America. In other English-speaking countries, the word "fall" is very rarely used to mean "autumn". Therefore, "autumn" might actually be a less ambiguous word for the Letterman article since it's understood by all, even those of us who commonly say "fall". Yes, I tagged it for speedy deletion due to lack of sources establishing notability, in particular failing Wikipedia:ENTERTAINER. This does not mean the subject is not notable, but notability was not sufficiently established through inline citations using secondary sources. Of course, this is my opinion, and the admin who actually deleted the article agreed. If you wish to have the deletion reversed, you should take it up with the admin who deleted the article. Thanks! I'm well aware of who she is and her history on reality television. If she wins, I believe notability is still weak, but probably weakly arguable, based on my observation of AFD nominations. I've got an even better idea, why don't we try to establish her notability outside of reality television? For example, she is reportedly a popular radio personality. This would indicate that there are secondary sources (e.g., newspaper articles) establishing her notability in radio. Or, perhaps she has articles written about her for other reasons? I am all for having more articles about notable people on WP, but I don't feel as though simply appearing on one show and another spin-off show is enough. Otherwise, everyone on I Love Money would be notable enough to have an article, which I don't feel is true, as these articles tend to be very short and include nothing more than a recap of what they did on the reality show. However, such a recap is best placed in the article of the respective reality show. On the other hand, if they are notable beyond the show, then it's clear that an article is helpful in consolidating this information and avoiding WP:COATRACK/WP:TRIVIA on the reality show's page. Yes I absolutely agree, let her notability be outside of Vh1 shows, and/or reality television. Some verifiable things are, she is a radio personality for a major American (Detroit) station, and she is a well known D.J (her mixes in Europe are known). Unlike some contestants in these programs, Amanda does qualify for an article, based on, she is known outside of reality television, she is a well known radio personality, and she even has records released in Europe. After presenting these facts I would assume, using wiki standards, that you would re-create the article that you yourself erased, considering the subject qualifies for an article. I accidentely created a new article which you can reach by typing in "Charm school 3" as opposed to the main article "Charm School with Ricki Lake" or "Charm School 3". Yes, I would say 'in conjunction with'. Basically, I started using Lightmouse's script awhile back and decided to write my own to automate some tasks that I found performing myself. I try to add as many comments as possible to make it clear what it's doing. There is a very minor overlap between the two scripts, but this is very very minor. However, I used Lightmouse's script as a starting point since although I know quite a bit about regular expressions, I am still learning about javascript and interfacing it with wikipedia. You can have a look at the brief documentation and commented code in User:Plastikspork/monobook.js/script.js. Cash Cab

Why'd you take out my comment about the Cash Cab being a Toyota Sienna minivan with tag number 1G12? Your explantion is that 1) it's "unnecessary detail." Well really, a lot of stuff on Wikipedia is "unnecessary." If you use that standard you could probably delete most of the site. And 2 you said that it's unsourced. Well, I've watched a lot of Cash Cabs and I've taken a lot of NYC taxis, and I can tell you without a doubt that it's been a Toyota minivan and its tag has been 1G12 (it's changed for this year apparently and is now 7N78). Again, if everything unsourced was removed from Wikipedia you'd lose a lot of content. Script-assisted editing?

That particular edit was a combination of User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js and my User:Plastikspork/monobook.js/script.js. The script removed all the &nbsp; tags, so after the edit was finished, I did add a few back again to make the table look a bit less collapsed. Otherwise, it was completely automatic after hitting a few buttons. I keep a User:Plastikspork/script list for my own sanity as there are so many that I would like to try. If you can describe a particular repetitive task that you would like to automate, I can probably write a script to assist you. Celebreality Series

Hrmm... Im just thinking but should 'Tool Academy', 'Scream Queens', 'Most Smartest Model' and 'I Know my Kids a Star' but under the celebreality banner too? From the VH1 website it seems to blog over these shows in the same fashion and often the people from the shows have been seen in events with the 'Of Love' series... Anyway your opinion on this? Yes, there are some shows missing. Of course, not every show on VH1 is Celebreality, but it appears to be exponentially increasing. There are formatting tricks to make it more compact and get rid of some of the excessive whitespace. Another option would be to remove the title characters from the top. By the way, is there some place with a comprehensive list of all the Celebreality shows on VH1? I searched on VH1 and found some useful hits, but nothing complete. Thanks! It was reverted as vandalism because the listed air date isn't for another couple days and you didn't include a source. A more minor point would be that it was not properly formated to conform with the format used in other Celebreality shows, i.e., include the episode number as opposed to a colorbox. It's the first time I have learned about this method of contact.

What I did was make a necessary add to include "Adult Contemporary" under Genre. I might have re-adjusted the pop rock label to look like "pop/rock".

I was at the time browsing the page and learned that the genre states that his music was 'rock', so I searched for one of his rock songs and found one called 'Fool's Game'.

After listening to 'Fool's Game', I then agreed that "rock" belongs under Genre.

I just want to say that I really appreciate your looking out for so many of the reality show articles and articles related to them here at Wikipedia. Hello Plastikspork, it is really nice to hear from you. We have never interacted before, but I have to tell you that I am impressed with your work and dedication here. While it is true that policy does not state that "birth dates" does "not" have to be sourced, it doesn't state that birth dates have to have a source either. I would say that it is an unwritten law in Wikipedia since birth dates of notable people which have been published in one or more reliable sources and therefore been widely published. I would say by viewing the thousands of Bios. here, that it is a widely accepted norm. Otherwise, we would have to start asking for sources every single minor detail.

Now, in regard to "La La", it seems to me that the most of the reliable websites which had her born 25 June, 1979, when the article was started are no longer in the net, yet the vast majority in google cite her as being born in 79' while about two cite her in 80'. I believe then the best approach would then be to cite her birthdate as (c. 1979). Hey, I'm sorry to take so long to answer you, but I have so many things on hand. Lists of Common Misspellings

I was curious why you changed the script that was run on the Lists of Common Misspellings. The one run around April 24 was fine. But the script run around May 7 did two things that were somewhat unexpected (at least to me). (1) The pages now display the quotation marks for words in which the search parameter initiates an exact search. It's a bit jarring to see, but in the final analysis may be helpful. (2) The script re-inserted at least two entries that had been commented out because they returned too many false positives (the words "u" and "planed"). Not a big deal (I can re-comment them out). Again, neither of these issues is a problem; I was just curious as I hadn't seen anything on the talk page announcing the new script. Thanks. JimVC3 (talk) 19:12, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about that. It appears I completely forgot to leave a notice before making the change. I am in the process of fixing the problems that you mentioned. On a related note, in the process of making the change I actually found quite a few errors. Basically, by requiring that the search term is listed twice, once for the link and once for the link target, this allows for the two strings to not match. Usually it was the link target which was wrong, since the link would then look correct when rendered on the page. I hope you find the 'search link' template helpful in that it makes it easier to add entries without having to write the search term twice. I will work on making the template remove the quotes in the rendered search link, but for now, the second unnamed parameter is the link text. As for uncommenting false positive entries. I was not aware that it was a problem if they were not actually linked? Now that I have read the instructions at the top of each page, I see that the method for commenting one out is to change the bullet '*' to an indent ':'. By the way the script that I ran did not uncomment the entries, I did that by hand since I thought it would be okay if they were not linked to let people know that these were indeed misspellings, but not ones which could be reliably identified by a simple WP search. Thanks for the response. A note on the talk page would have been helpful, but not a big deal. (1) Removing the display of the quotation marks is fine from a stylistic standpoint. Oddly, in the last hour I've convinced myself they're helpful. As I noted a few weeks ago on the misspelling talk page, some words need to be exact searches, others don't. It may be helpful to see which type of search is being performed without going to the edit page. (2) I'm not at all surprised that you found errors in the search terms. Many people who add words by cut and paste neglect to make changes in both places. I did a massive clean-up of other things several months ago and didn't have the energy to look for those errors. Thanks for cleaning them up. (3) I'm not sure what to do about the entries with thousands of false positives. I began working with these pages when I was a real newbie and just followed instructions to comment things out. But one could argue that a display that is unlinked is fine as well. (4) On a related issue, I actually believe that the instructions are incorrect. Substituting a colon does not comment the line out; it just makes for an unattractive, unlinked display. Yours look better. I may suggest a re-phrasing of the instructions at some later date. (5) I found the new template that you're using and read the discussion. Yes, it is helpful. Agreed. Let me know if you want me to do any/all of the following: (a) Restore the rendering of the exact search string; including quotes, (b) change the indentation style for 'false positive' entries back to the more visually appealing version, (c) update the instructions at the top of each page. I can do any/all of these by just adding a couple lines to a script and pressing one button on each page. It appears were are the only two who actively care about how it looks. I have been corresponding with another editor who appears to use the page as part of an automatic editing script, but he/she doesn't care as the script uses a cached version. You're right - there isn't a great deal of concern about how the page looks, so I don't want to unnecessarily complicate things. But for what it's worth: (a) I see you already changed the rendering to eliminate the quotation marks. My suggestion would be to keep it simple and leave it that way. (b) There were only two or three false positives that were commented out. Those could be kept as/returned to being commented out OR changed to the "*" style in non-searchable text. I don't have a strong preference. But there were dozens of "acceptable variant" words that I had already changed to the "*"/non-searchable (i.e., more visually appealing) style. The point was to allow visitors to the page to see that the word shouldn't be entered as a misspelling. It would be great if you could return those to the "*"/non-searchable style. (c) Depending on which of these options you settle on, new instructions would be great. I'd be happy to help work something out on the talk page. Script

Hi. I am in the process of developing a script to automatically correct common misspellings in articles. The initial goal is for users to have a button at the top of the article which will open an edit window and do a search/replace to correct common misspellings. When the script completes, it then shows the changes and allows the editor to decide if the changes were correct. The goal is to have as few falsely corrected entries, so some of the entries on WP:LCM wouldn't be added. If you are interested in trying it out, let me know. My initial prototype only has entries from the "A" page. There are probably some minor bugs in there as well, but it won't commit any changes without approval. The script is at User:Symplectic Map/AutoSpell and you just have to include User:Symplectic Map/spell.js in your monobook.js file, e.g., User:Symplectic Map/monobook.js. If you are using something other than the standard theme, it would have to be included there instead. It should work on Firefox and Google Chrome. I haven't tested Internet Explorer. It appears I was able to solve most of my IE issues with the script. The major technical problem was that Firefox allows for addressing a string as an array, but IE didn't allow this. Instead, I had to use the slice function to address the individual characters. There may be a better way, but I don't know what it is at the moment. I made some modifications to the core.js, (see User:Symplectic Map/autoedcore.js), and got something that works on IE. I also simplied the namespace logic, perhaps more/less than you what you need. The key problem with IE and Chrome is that you can't rely on a particular order of execution of statements due to optimizations. It's the whole execute on reference idea. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to force execution before a 'typeof' statement. Feel free to use what I have written and refine it for your needs. Let me know if I can help any more. Best Regards. Thanks for the feedback. I just improved the matching criteria in User:Plastikspork/citetools.js, and it should work now. The problem was there was a comma after 'Retrieved', which is a strange place to put a comma. The script now ignores this comma. You will have to force a reload of the script to keep it from using the cached version. You can do this by reloading User:Plastikspork/citetools.js, or probably by reloading your monobook.js. Let me know if you find other pages where I can improve the matching criteria. Also, I am currently merging this script with WP:AutoEd, but not all the features have been merged yet, and SporkScript will probably still exists after the merge, just with fewer buttons. Cage said it would be best for him to leave, so Daisy saying that she "had to let him go" is irrelevant. He was leaving anyway. Therefore, I believe that makes it a voluntary withdrawal. The VH1 blog on VH1.com also states on it's official recap that Cage withdrew on his own accord, thereby making the decision for Daisy. I don't see how this isn't a withdrawal.

Given the number of attempts, that sounds like a reasonable idea. I do like to generally avoid semi-protection, especially when there are constructive edits being made by IP users, but I haven't seen much of that on La La. I was an anon IP editor for about three years before I got an account, and the reason why I got an account was primarily so I could edit semi-protected pages. After I got an account I found all kinds of helpful benefits that I hadn't thought about. I'm on semi-vacation this week, so I haven't been able to watch the page as closely as I usually do. Wikipedia Edits

In reply to your revision of Tammy Faye Baker -- Well done, and thanks for proving a point that I had made in a workshop that I am conducting.

In doing a workshop on the accuracy of online research with university students, an argument arose as to the validity of Wikipedia in that user contributions are posted without verification and checks for accuracy.

My student asserted that information, especially small bits of information, can be placed in a Wikipedia article and not be detected for extended periods of time.

As someone who uses Wikipedia for research -- not as the final word, but as an invaluable tool for obtaining initial information and resources for addition research -- my argument was that it is generally accurate and is in a state of continual correction and refinement. The "food for worms" insertion (just a few short words) was expected to remain until at least next week's class. However, the rapidity of the correction shows that Wikipedia works remarkably well. While individually, inaccuracies may exist, on the whole, the correction mechanisms demonstrate a resource that can provide reliable information as a basis for further investigation. I will use this at next week's class.

I will see if I can dig it up. It was in regard to the quotation of paragraph long episode summaries in reality television show articles (for example, on Rock of Love Bus). It's particularly interesting in this case, as quotations are actually the entire episode summary, so it could be construed as copying the "entire article." On the other hand, each summary is only a few lines long. I would have posted the question to the talk page of a user who deleted such summaries as copyright violation. I will see if I can find it. Disclaimer: IANAL

So, when Congress passed the Copyright Act of 1976, they included section 107, which lists four non-essential, non-inclusive tests for Fair Use. The third item in §107 is "the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole." The main thrust there is that you must examine quantity as well as importance - there was a case (Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc. v. Nation Enterprises) where 300 words out of 200,000 were found to be substantial given their content. Essentially, you're right to notice a potential issue in those episode lists, since quoting the entire summary is, well, the entire summary!

Really, though, it all has to be considered along with other factors, such as the fourth (effect on the market). If, say, you were copying directly out of a TV guide, then you might be affecting the market, but normally I'd still say you're probably fine since each one would be from a different (old and therefore largely useless) guide. Still, it would be worth going through some/most of them and trying to rewrite them in your own words if possible, or only using a fraction, as quoting the entire thing really IS a poor fair use validation.

However, since all the quotes are from one page, you're essentially committing a copyright violation of that entire VH1 page. With that in mind, you're not only copying a substantial amount (all) of each individual summary, but a substantial amount (all) of the VH1 page itself. So... yeah, I'd change 'em, since as it stands, you've essentially copied the entire page into different sections. WDW Monorail system

However, since the disambiguation page only had two entries, I have changed it to a redirect to John Rowles. With regard to the unsubstantiated claims on John Rowles, I am not the one who added them. I am the one who reverted your commentary about the claim being false. If you find a false claim, you should simply remove it, and note why in the edit summary. Yes, the problem is that you shouldn't simply copy content from another website. It would be best if you started from scratch. You should also read WP:COI and WP:AUTO, as there is helpful information about writing articles when you yourself know (or are in fact) the subject. Let me know if I can be of further help. Hi,

I do not understand why my page was deleted?!? This Wikipedia is not user friendly at all- it says becasue it was promotional, but yet there are 70 other Credit Unions on Wikipedia.

Everything that I put in there is true and factual so I am not understanding why it is being deleted.

Thank you for contacting me. The page was deleted due to the tone and language used in the article, which was viewed to be purely promotional. This is not a reflection on the notability of the credit union, but is instead, a reflection on the way in which the material was presented. For example, the lead section contained the following sentence: "Our online banking access is free and includes a remote deposit feature where members may deposit checks online and receive immediate credit for their deposit-a service offered to consumers by only a handful of financial institutions." This reads as if it were cut-and-paste from promotional materials provided by the Credit Union. My advice would be to start slowly, and rewrite the article in your userspace (e.g., what you have here). I would start with a list of facts about the Credit Union, and in particular, concentrate on those facts which make the Credit Union notable. It is important, if not critical, to include references to secondary sources. For example, news articles which discuss the credit union. This helps to further build claims of notability. As I investigated the CorenSearchBot report which flagged the first five articles eventually leading to the block of the above user, just a few comments here with the intent of ensuring that you have the full picture:

• The source material is licensed under GFDL 1.2, which has become incompatible with Wikipedia only as recently as June 16th this year. The user may have acted in good faith, not realizing that he was in violation
• From the username, he may be one of the two contributors to the source site's material, and again, he may have acted in good faith with the initial addition of the material
• Due to a bug, CSB cannot currently post notices to talk pages which have not been created yet, so the user may not have been aware of the issue until later actions either by me or CobaltBlueTony, who initially believed the material to be in compliance because of the GFDL 1.2 license on the source
• I note however, that he subsequently disregarded the manual note I left on his talk page and went on to add two more of the same articles
• Further, he appears to have created a sock with the purpose of evading his block under Paul kenneth m mora (talk · contribs) and reposted the material deleted as is
• Last but not least, there are traces of an earlier deletion performed on July 13th on some of the articles, which might indicate yet another username blocked in the meantime. Just read the help requested section above, you're already fully aware of this :)

There is an https interface to Wikipedia, https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en as opposed to http://en.wikipedia.org . When you login, the login screen mentions the secure connection as an option. You can make a Wikipedia URL work with both by using 'fullurl' for the base prefix. I wish there was support to make it so people browsing under https would always see the https links and people browsing under http would always see the http links, but not yet. Also, if you log in under https it doesn't log you into all the other wikimedia projects for some reason. I'm sure this is much more information than you cared to hear. In any event, I hope that helps explain the situation. No problem about reverting the vandalism. I have about 2500 pages on my watchlist and that particular edit looked rather fishy. Thanks! Sprk script

I was wondering how you can install individual modules of your script, if it's possible? Specifically, I'd really like to have the date-formatting script, but the other ones I basically never use so they just take up space in the toolbox. I tried a few things, but they didn't work. Is this even possible with the current setup?

Also, I've found one common false positive with the sprk script's date formatting: If something like ?date=2009-9-12 is part of a URL, the script tries to change it and would then break the link. Maybe adding the RegEx \|[ ]* before the first group in the various date replacements will catch these by only modifying those with a pipe before them, e.g., template parameters? Good idea. I had a fairly complicated method for selecting which links were added, but it should probably be scrapped. A better method is to just split the script into smaller chunks. If you include User:Plastikspork/date.js, it will only add the three date formatting buttons. I also modified the script to make it look for the pipe as you suggested. I think your font size change may have been a bit premature, Plastikspork. I think you should have waited until there was consensus to change the font size before actually changing it. I think there was a misunderstanding, about my reversion on this article, and I want to clarify.

Per WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG#WNTI, alumni are generally not included in a school articles unless they are themselves the subject of an article, have met the criteria to be the subject of an article, or may not have met the criteria for an article, but have an intimate association with an entity that meets WP:N. In my experience of editing, this commonly is used for something like a member of a band who is not notable, while the band is notable.

The alum is not the subject of an article. The company he created is not the subject of an article. These two things raise a red flag regarding the (wikipedia) notability of the person. I hope you will understand that this is why I took the action I did.

G-hits are not criteria for inclusion: several current high school students (usually athletes) can have many G-hits, but are in no way eligible for inclusion. There are several newscasters, businesspeople, college athletes, etc who have hundreds if not thousands of g-hits and all fail notability requirements for being included.

Now having said that, I could still be wrong. Maybe this company is notable, and by founding said company, this person may in fact meet the criteria for inclusion. The person may in fact be notable, and not have an article started about him.

I will leave this alone for now, leaving a note on the article talk page, but there are editors that I have met who would certainly delete this citing the same criteria I have stated. I will give some time for this to develop, but if there is not a more clear verification of notability, he will likely be deleted at some point in the future.
