Inviting you to discuss the merge of Escherian Stairwell

I created the Escherian Stairwell page today and user Elmidae is currently holding a discussion. You can see my full opinion on the discussion page but I am very neutral (originally positive) about this. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 22:47, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, AdrianWikiEditor! I like the article, it's an interesting story. I do support the merge. Imagine, for instance, that ten university groups come up with Kickstarters and videos in the future. Penrose stairs could have a section like "Attempted creations" or something like that.
Those are my 2¢. = paul2520 (talk) 11:49, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
I see what you mean, I guess I'll change my responce to positive so we can speed up the merge process. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 14:15, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

May you join this month's editathons from WiR!

Orphaned non-free image File:Rethink Robotics logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:Rethink Robotics logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:49, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Call for submissions for the Community Growth space at Wikimania 2019

Welcome to a special newsletter from the Growth team! This special newsletter is not about Wikimedia Foundation Growth team projects. Instead, it is a call for submissions for the Community Growth space at Wikimania 2019. We think that many people who receive this newsletter may have something valuable to contribute to this space at Wikimania. We haven't translated the newsletter, because Wikimania's language is English.

Please see below for the message from the organizers of the Community Growth space at Wikimania.

---

Wikimania 2019 is organized into 19 “spaces”, which are all accepting proposals for sessions. This message comes from the team organizing the Community Growth space.

Since you are interested b Growth team projects, and potentially involved in welcoming newcomers initiatives on your wiki, we would like to invite you to submit a proposal to the Community Growth space because of the actions you’ve done around newcomers on wikis. The deadline for submission is June 1. See below for Community Growth submission topics and session formats. Topics and sessions have to be in English.

In the Community Growth space, we will come together for discussions, presentations, and workshops that address these questions:

  • What is and is not working around attracting and retaining newcomers?
  • How should Wikimedia activities evolve to help communities grow and flourish?
  • How should our technology and culture evolve to help new populations to come online, participate and become community members?

Recommended topics: please see this link for the list for the list of recommended topics. If you do not plan to submit a proposal, you can also suggest additional topics here. If your topic does not fit into our space, remember that there are 18 other spaces that could welcome you sharing your knowledge and perspective.

Types of session. We prefer sessions that are participatory, interactive, promote conversations, and give a voice to parts of our movement that are heard less often. Please see this link for the list of recommended session formats.

Poster submissions. Posters are also a good way to introduce a topic, or show some results of an action. Please consider submitting one!

More information about the Community Growth space, topics, and submission formats is available on the proposal page.

Please submit your proposal. The reviews will happen at the beginning of June.

If you have questions about Wikimania in general, please ask them on the Wikimania wiki.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Paul2520,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Autopatrolled

Hey Paul, I am currently working on getting autopatrolled, (you can see my request here). While that's happening I would like my two pages to be reviewed. I am pretty proud of them and they will only show up on Google if they are reviewed. Unfortunately, no one wants too review them. Please review them.

AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 00:33, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey, AdrianWikiEditor. Nice work! I will do a more thorough review later today. = paul2520 (talk) 14:54, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
  Done. Thanks, AdrianWikiEditor! = paul2520 (talk) 21:20, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
Great! Thanks. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 22:00, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello paul, i need Help

First of all, tank you for you welcoming! i wanted to ask how do i do when i don't agree with an administrator ? He deleted an article i made for "lack of references" while i putted 2 TV show made by the OFFICIAL NATIONAL TELEVISION about the person i wrote the article on. One is a 50 minutes show about his filmography and the other is a 30 minute show about one of his project. He is an independant filmmaker and "Artivist" so he doesn't have a great visibility on medias but he is VERY famous here. I'm making my "mémoire" on his cursus that why i made the page about him. P.S i'm certain and deeply sadned by th fact that our National Television isn't considered as a real source of information and i really believe that the admin decision (since he's french) is influenced by the fact that french people tend often to stigmatize and under estimate arab people and medias. Thanks for your time Lecteur Anonyme. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lecteuranonyme (talkcontribs) 16:13, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Lecteuranonyme! I'm sorry to hear about this experience. You might want to read Wikipedia:Notability (people), specifically section 2.3 on creative professionals. Based on what you wrote here, I'm guessing they either are not widely cited, or perhaps haven't gotten "significant critical attention".
Was there an "article for deletion" discussion?
I think you should consider making a draft; since the page was deleted, I have no way to see it to provide more insight. I hope this helps! = paul2520 (talk) 12:16, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Belle Delphine

Hey Paul, sorry to bother you again, but this is my last time I will ask you, I promise.

I am counting on you to review Belle Delphine, she has blown up so much lately that I had to create it. Plus all my friends (plus like 2,000,000 others) want her page done too.

There was a draft and I am trying to get the draft deleted ([1]).

Hopefully it's notable enough, it'd be sad if it isn't.

AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 09:34, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello again, AdrianWikiEditor! Thanks for reaching out -- and doesn't have to be the last time; I'm open to helping others.
I'm worried because the page reads like what WP:One event says not to do. Is she only notable for not posting "promised" lewd content? Having many followers and fans isn't enough & I just did a quick couple of searches and am not seeing many reliable sources on her. This might be one, but still not enough.
I'm not making a decision immediately, but thought I would tell you my initial thoughts. We definitely can't list birthday and location of birth without a source, and I only am seeing other user-contributed sites out there with the same info.
Would you be able to do more digging into third-party sources, like news articles, before I review further?
Bear in mind that even if many friends like this person, that's not enough to merit an encyclopedia article. It seems like you enjoy her social media sites & there are other fan pages/blogs, but nothing suggesting to me that she needs a Wikipedia article at this time. = paul2520 (talk) 11:37, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

I'm going to base everything off of the WP:RSP so Newsweek is good. Metro and is not and the rest (down below) aren't even on the list.

Oh yeah, and don't forget the videos on YouTube that have made millions of views.

AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 11:58, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Those sources are great, AdrianWikiEditor. My concerns are more with Wikipedia:Notability (people). What has she done/won/been recognized for, other than have a large number of followers and troll them? = paul2520 (talk) 12:06, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
Well she is a cosplayer. She can kinda sing
I'm very grateful for the work you put into Wikipedia. And it's great that you have a subject of interest.
I'm not convinced of the notability, per above. Note that the draft you mentioned was declined, also for notability (even if the draft had other issues, notability is an important factor to establish). But I will leave this to other reviewers. They might have a perspective I don't have, or another way to explain it. = paul2520 (talk) 12:24, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
Well she is a cosplayer. She can kinda sing It says on her Patreon that she loves painting, ice-skating, and being creative (especially with makeup) (she said that in one of her posts on Instagram). AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 12:33, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
Please spend some time reading the links I've given above. That's great that she has hobbies. But her posting about those things does not make her inherently notable for our encyclopedia. There must be several reliable sources (and I'll repeat what I said about notability based on one event). = paul2520 (talk) 13:25, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Paul2520,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Paul2520,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.
