Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Orphaned non-free image File:KeighleyCougars2019.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:KeighleyCougars2019.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:30, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

  Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

  Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Mary Ann Mansel - family letters

Please would you take a look at my query here Talk:Mary_Ann_Mansel#The_21_family_letters_written_to_Herbert_Mansel_by_members_of_his_family? Arbil44 (talk) 13:54, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

I have created a map which I would like to upload to my userpage - entitled - "Our Asgill Road Trip 13-31 May 2019 created with primap.com". Is that software, primap.com copyright-free? - it indicates it is on its website. May I use this map please? Thanks. Arbil44 (talk) 14:07, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Replied at your own talk page. Nthep (talk) 17:04, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm in trouble - please help at my talk page. Arbil44 (talk) 12:27, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
A rather exciting development! Please see Mary Ann's talk page, where I have asked you a question. Arbil44 (talk) 23:55, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
Still hoping for your thoughts on the Mansel letters Nthep (please tell me where I stand because all the groundwork has been done for some time now), but now I have another query too. If I cannot get copyright permission to publish a 1996 map (and I have a feeling now that I won't - I can explain more if you wish) am I permitted to draw this map myself and then use it? See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sir_Charles_Asgill,_2nd_Baronet#Summit_New_Jersey,_by_Edmund_B._Raftis Arbil44 (talk) 09:40, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Nthep, I am completely out of my depth and being threatened with banning here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#Summit_New_Jersey%2C_by_Edmund_B._Raftis All I am asking for is clear guidance which (with my lack of IT skills) is easy to understand. I am on the point of not giving a damn whether I improve the Asgill page by showing where Timothy Day's Tavern was located. Easy to tear up my work from yesterday if that resolves the issue. How my long dead father is compromising my account is a total mystery.Arbil44 (talk) 12:24, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Nthep, I am on the point of another meltdown and would be so grateful if you could join the discussion here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#21_Mansel_Family_Letters_written_to_Herbert_Mansel_between_1819-1835 where I have been told to unlink the Mansel letters. I have been trying to depart from Wikipedia since 1.10.19 but still haven't quite finished my work here. I just want to finish and leave. It is so difficult when one is IT illiterate and I have even messed up the link to yessterday's map on my userpage (with a link to Dayton) and unable to insert an 07 - could you please please help me there too? Arbil44 (talk) 09:13, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Request to add Emily as facilitator to Leeds Wikithon?

Hi Nthep! Just wondering if you might be able to add User:Emily.f.rees to the Leeds Electrifying Women Wikithon Dashboard page as a facilitator please? Then she'll be able to look at her "students'" stats from across all the events more easily in one place and reporting of the metrics will be a little easier. Zeromonk (talk) 09:52, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

@Zeromonk: Not a problem - done. Nthep (talk) 14:19, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Fantastic, thanks for being so speedy! :) Zeromonk (talk) 14:21, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

  Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

@Mjroots: I'd forgotten that with the publication of the fifth edition of Quick that the supplements to the 4th edition had been incorporated into the 5th edition. Tidy up time! Nthep (talk) 12:46, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Template:2020 RFL Championship regular season table

@Nthep: could you take a look at the Championship (rugby league) table and possibly fix it?

I don't understand this OT_win/loss points system, as I've never seen it like this before.

I'm not sure why, but it's showing Oldham and Batley have played 5, but they haven't, they have only played 4.

I've added the points to both teams OT yet it's showing Oldham on 4 points, and batley on 3.

It's really confusing as to how to add points.

Thanks L1amw90 (talk) 02:29, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

@L1amw90: just treat the OT columns as if it was a draw between the two clubs but one team gets a winning draw, the other a losing draw. What you have done is to give Oldham a win AND a winning draw, and Batley a loss AND a losing draw. Nthep (talk) 10:19, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Now the template has been changed just give a win to the team that wins after gp and a loss to the other team but add one to the |adjust_points parameter for the losing team. Only use the draws column if gp doesn't settle it. Nthep (talk) 17:40, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Rugby league rivalry and record pages

You can feel free to discard this message, however I was wondering if you'd like to collaborate on making a list of various national team's records (like List of Australia national rugby league team records) and international rivalry pages (like New Zealand vs Tonga in rugby league)?
