As you will certainly notice, there are some good Wikipedians who don't bother to put an edit summary, even if it is required (and helpful). But, given the changes you've made to Ninja Strike Force, it would be a shame for that article to go away. --Myles Long 16:16, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC) It would be a shame. Potentially encyclopedic material is being constantly deleted on VfD, sometimes without clear consensus or after an article has been significantly improved. [1] If you are just becoming intimate with VfD, I am sorry to tell you it is riddled with problems. The biggest problem is that people incorrently cite notability and importance, or lack thereof, as a reason for deletion when in fact notability and importance are absolutely not reasons for deletion at all. Wikipedia:Importance says itself in bold: "This page is not official Wikipedia policy." The entire concept of notability and importance is a point of view sculpted by systematic bias, and as it just so happens, the fellows who frequent VfD are outrageously biased towards science-fiction and fantasy. Subjects related to Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Pokemon, Lord of the Rings, and so on will always be kept at worst merged. Yet, somehow, this same band of folks, who I assume are mostly males in their late teens to mid twenties, are harshly discriminatory towards inherently "notable" real-world subjects like films, music groups, and even educational institutions. When this is brought up, the argument presented is that "WP:NOT consistent" even though that is not actually mentioned within WP:NOT. Or another counter argument by deletionists is that "WP:NOT a general knowledge base", but when referred back to the countless number of stubs on the above-mentioned sci-fi articles we are returned back to "WP:NOT consistent". Most of these fallacious arguments are counter to the wishes of the Wikipedia founder, Jimbo Wales, who said, and I quote: "It is our goal to put the sum of all human knowledge in the form of an encyclopedia in the hands of every single person on the planet for free," during an interview with the Washington Post. [2] When this quote is cited, deletionists claim that this quote is being taken out of context, or if that fails they will attempt to debate themselves into a corner arguing what an encyclopedia actually is, making themselves guilty of twisting a quote out of context. We have individual articles detailing over 120 episodes of The Simpsons, a stream which receives an incidentally brief mention in Lord of the Rings, a clothing item worn by Link in the Legend of Zelda, a fictional professor from Pokemon, and even a fan-fiction collective of engineers from the Star Wars universe so utterly minor it only returns 7 hits on the google radar. After growing tired of seeing school article after school article deleted, I created the Schoolwatch programme in an effort to improve school related articles. This was met with much hostility by deletionists trolls who atrociously attempted to subvert the programme by having it deleted, merged, moved, redirected, or derailed from its purpose. Again, a quote was cited by Jimbo Wales made on a mailing list where he said in response to a message titled Partial solution to rampant deletionism: "if someone wants to write an article about their high school, we should relax and accomodate them, even if we wish they wouldn't do it. And that's true *even if* we should react differently if someone comes in and starts mass-adding articles on every high school in the world." [3] And again, spurious claims were made by deletionist trolls that the quote was being taken out of context, even though the entire message body is clearly cited for all to read. It is really unfortunate that so much valuable time that could otherwise be spent improving Wikipedia articles is lost here fighting tooth and nail to keep what should obviously be important information of a historical interest. In the interest of this project, we should organically expand and invest, not suppress. Where do we go next? --GRider\talk 17:34, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC) In response to your comments, I completely agree. I am just now becoming acquainted with VfD, and I find it to be a biased process, as you have pointed out. Your Schoolwatch programme is pretty interesting; I'll definitely have to keep it on my radar. I completely agree that most schools deserve an article...I see that what "WP:NOT" is often cited in the VfD debates. These people seem pretty sure about what Wikipedia is not, but they often seem to forget what Wikipedia is: a community project. Also, those who cite it seem to forget the first point on that page, "WP:NOT paper". Since it's not paper, it can afford to be (and should definitely be) more inclusionary than a paper encyclopedia. Sorry this reply is disjointed. In the interest of this project, we should organically expand and invest, not suppress. Where do we go next? I completely agree. We should expand articles. If we find a sub-par article that could have merit, why delete it? Why not add to it? Or at least request that it be added to by a more knowledgeable person? With regard to Ninja Strike Force, could you please vote to keep it? There's a lack of a consensus at this point, but "delete" seems to have a plurality. Is that enough to make it be deleted? Who knows? None of my business. --Myles Long 20:22, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC) One of the convenient aspects of a wiki is that just about everything happens in public. Archives of the two requests for comment on GRider's behaviour, as well as the decision of the arbitration committee are easily available. (First RfC, second RfC, arbitration decision.) GRider has been banned from participation in VfD because he was deliberately disrupting the process there. He wanted to change the deletion policy, but instead of using Wikipedia's usual mechanisms (like the Village Pump or even Wikipedia Talk:Deletion policy), he made more than two hundred VfD nominations to try to make a point. There are a number of Wikipedians who always (or nearly always) vote to keep articles on VfD, and they are free to do so as long as they do not engage in deliberately disruptive behaviour. As they say, there is no (deletionist) cabal. :) I hope GRider continues to make positive, constructive additions to Wikipedia's articles—VfD is a very small part of what we do here. Also, according to the airport's site [5], Southwest still flys in and out of IAH.
