Plurality

The term plurality refers to a part of a whole which is greater than any other part, but not necessarily a majority. It can also refer to the state of being plural, i.e. as a synonym for multiplicity.

Law and politics

• Plurality opinion, in a decision by a multi-member court, an opinion held by more judges than any other but not by an overall majority

• First-preference plurality, also called first-past-the-post, a system in which each voter votes for one candidate and the candidate with a plurality is elected
