Thanks for the note. In my opinion it's definitely worthy of being mentioned in the article, because it shows how the definition of "assault weapon" can vary to a surprising degree. But I do think it's not a basic or critical point, which is why I moved it out of the lead section. Hopefully other editors will agree. — Mudwater ^(Talk) 04:17, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Confederate stars-and-bars

Thanks for the assist at Confederate States of America for the historical flag. I will not be able to keep up on wikipedia much longer, so I would take it as a personal favor if you could look out for the history. The stainless banner is found flying in a Ft. McHenry-sized version along I-95 in Georgia. the contemporary "Confederate States of America, Inc." has in its charter (1) the denial of the end of the Confederacy, (2) reference to the states of the former Confederacy as illegitimately "occupied" by the U.S. Government (3) the goal to elect representatives to peaceably vote for secession and (4) the promotion of the "current" flag of the Confederate States of America, the stainless banner, which they use on their correspondence. Wikipedia source hierarchy

Right now I'm just trying to beat back the judge-made apartheid of the Insular Cases, which are now overturned in U.S. statute and jurisprudence, as sourced. They are found as the determining editorial direction of the United States article in the lead sentence and introduction. Editors would exclude U.S. citizens living on islands, denying they can be "a part of the United States". Quick summary of the discussion since October can be found at Talk:United States#First sentence source challenge, subsection "'Include territories' sources". After that, my participation will probably be periodic. I'm a teacher retired by disability, my primary concern is that what a fifth grader sees on opening a Wikipedia article. I'd like each to find balanced presentation of history sections with interpretation that is not so miscast or oversimplified that it must be relearned with advancing education. Anyhow, thanks. I just took a quick look at that, and I'll check it out some more if I get a chance. It looks to me like you have a valid point, but, to be honest, it might be a point that's a bit subtle for the average reader, let alone the average fifth grader. Like many editors I'm somewhat obsessed with Wikipedia, and how it can inform or misinform our readers, but on the other hand I think that the influence of Wikipedia on real world events is sometimes less than one might think -- and I mean that in a good way! — Mudwater ^(Talk) 03:10, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Assault weapon

I made a similar mistake as you did when removing "that is, a machine gun". When I imagine machine gun, I picture any fully automatic gun of any sort. That is apparently incorrect and while assault weapon does not equal assault rifle, assault rifle does not equal machine gun, even though both are fully automatic. Ryan Vesey 02:24, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
