Thanks for the Warm Welcome

edit

Glad you did not mind the spelling changes, being brand new here, I felt kind of bold making them, but my fingers were itching to fix it. I also fixed up the other level pages (that I could think of). I think I'll like it here, have started a work list (in the area of perennial plants). Mia Goff 12:43, May 9, 2005 (UTC)

Quotes

edit

In your recent edit to Ford GT90, you changed curly quotes (‘ => ‘ ’, “ ”) to straight quotes (' ', " ") and labelled your edit “(removing "smart quotes")”. But lsquo etc. are not “smart quotes”; smart quotes are when you type straight quotes and your word processor automagically inserts the appropriate version of curly quotes. It's also used to refer to Microsoft's proprietary, non-standard codepoints for curly quotes. But lsquo etc. are not proprietary, and not non-standard—in fact, they're part of the HTML standard. I agree it would be nicer to have the correct Unicode character in the text, but en.wikipedia doesn't support Unicode editing, so they would appear as 香 or whatever, which is pretty ugly. So that leaves lsquo as a way of producing typographically appropriate quotes. What's the problem? --Macrakis 14:12, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, and your pointer to the style manual. I do agree that the HTML entities are ugly and hard to read. A few lsquo's here and there are nothing compared to topic pages which have continuous text in entities, numerical entities no less, e.g. Greek alphabet. I wonder when we're going to upgrade to a full Unicode system so that these problems go away. It is ridiculous to be using typewriter-level typography in 2005. And I find it a waste to be entering straight quotes when eventually someone is going to have to go through and upgrade them (or maybe someone has good "smart quotes" technology to do it in batch). It looks awfully unprofessional now. But you're right, the style guide currently requires straight quotes. Blech. Any suggestions on how we can push for full Unicode editing? --Macrakis 16:39, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Spacing after a period

edit

Adding a second space after a period is a throwback to the typewriter days, used to add clarity to text typed in a fixed-width typeset. According to nearly every style manual, you should place only one space after a period in all text that is not to be displayed in a fixed-width typeset. -CasitoTalk 04:36, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

My response to that: tough. HTML renders any string of one or more spaces as one space in any case, so there is no difference in the rendered output. Additionally, two spaces after a period renders end-of-sentence markers easier to search for and distinguish from the point when used to show abbreviation. One notes that the tense uses you fixed in CHMSL were your own, by the way, not mine. —Morven 04:49, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)

Audi template

edit

Whoops! The stub template must have been removed between my loading the page and my editing it - I went to where the stub-template was on the page and removed a template - assuming it was the correct one. My appologies for this, I'll check closer next time I do some more stub clearing. Thryduulf 21:56, 4 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again for helping out with this article. The unfriendly anon is using many IPs to keep deleting all references to pollution or emissions. Page protection should be the last recourse, but it may be required in this case. Any other ideas? Cheers, -Willmcw 14:39, May 5, 2005 (UTC)

Public Domain, GDFL, Wikipedia (or is it "creative"?) commons... I am confused, please help !

edit

Hello, Morven.

Thank you for your message in my user page, which I discovered today. I must say I am still confused with all the possible options to tag a picture. What I would really like to do is :

  • If somebody wants to use any of my pictures as, for instance, a screen background for his/her personal use, or send it to friends, this looks quite OK to me; after all, the more useful I can be for the community, the better. That is why I want to be sure that there is no commercial use of them.
  • That being said, I also depend on my art to make a living, so I would like to be sure that what I put in the public domain are the circa 600-pixel wide reproductions I am uploading here, and not of course the full-sized original themselves. While this seems clear, I am not a lawyer and I hope I am not too mistaken.

I am going to read the links you sent me, and try to undersand what I can. Thank you for your help. Gilles Larrain 16:35, 22 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Horsepower

edit

I wasn't sure where to put this fairly generic question for maximum appropriate coverage of those in the know. Then I thought that you might be the ideal person to ask.

I noticed that Mercedes-Benz C-Class had hp values but no kW values. Since it is German, I researched the official websites and found kW values. I was a little confused that the google matched the official conversion for the US values but not the european values. Then I noticed that the factor was 0.745 on one side of the Atlantic and 0.736 on the other. I had heard that there are different versions of horsepower but I did not know that it was quite so ambiguous within a brand. In my edit summary I put a note to indicate my uncertainty about what was going on and in the text of the article I indicated my belief that the US 'hp' value and the non-US 'hp' values were different. A subsequent editor has attempted to clarify this but I am not sure if the clarification is accurate.

Can you take a look at this for me please? Am I correct in my belief that 'horsepower' is not always the same number of watts? If this is true, then it applies to a lot of articles. We may need to clarify each 'hp' just as we need to do with 'gallon'. If there is a good place for discussing this to get widespread opinion, I would be delighted if you could let me know, or simply take it there and indicate here. I am interested in your thoughts. Thanks. Bobblewik  (talk) 10:28, 26 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

PS/KW issue: In many euro-countries we have slightly different hp-values. The factor 0,736 is suitable for german DIN-hp (or DIN-PS). -- Stahlkocher 15:24, 26 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Am I correct in believing that most non-UK European countries tend to the German PS standard when quoting 'horsepower', in recent years? In older documents, of course, every nation had its own horsepower standard ... —Morven 15:30, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
I guess so. Probably italy had a different factor, but i have no documents at hands to proof this. -- Stahlkocher 19:44, 26 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
After some research I have discovered the there is a European Directive on this: 80/1269/EEC (and modified by: 88/195/EEC, 89/491/EEC, 97/21/EC and 1999/99/EC).
This Directive harmonises national legislation on the method of measuring engine power that must be used to indicate the engine power of a vehicle type.
Henceforth, no Member State may refuse to grant EEC type approval or national type approval in respect of a vehicle, or refuse or prohibit the sale, registration, entry into service or use of a vehicle on grounds relating to its engine power, if this has been determined in accordance with the Annexes to the Directive.
So perhaps the method of measurement itself has been harmonised in Europe, or will harmonise. I hope that somebody can make something of that.

Limited Geographic Scope of Wikipedia:Fair use

edit

Thank you for the advice re. tagging without comment. I have added an explanation in Wikipedia talk:Fair use. My concern is indeed applicability to a non-US user uploading a picture originally copyrighted outside the United States, as noted in my edit summary. I hadn't bothered explaining because I thought it would be obvious when flagged. The article makes many exclusive mentions of the US and the international debate was already on the talk page. --Yannick 21:47, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

T-Bird brakes

edit

The question of whether the 'Bird had the first anti-lock brakes came up on a Lincoln board I post on. A very knowledgeable user says: "Several have pointed out that the 1969 Thunderbird brochure lists it. I have never found anyone who has, or knew of anyone who had a 1969 T-Bird so equipped. It stands to reason, that IF Thunderbird had it in 1969, surely Lincoln would have, too--yet, they did not, until Summertime of 1970, so...what was Thunderbird using?" Know anything about this? Hi, welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use. As you might be aware, one of the tasks that the project is working on is to rewrite all of the existing fair use image tags. I'm now looking at the two templates above (having taken a look at them, they were better written than most of our fair use templates were, so good job on that), and I have a question for you. The templates say that you had received permission to place these images on Wikipedia. Does "these images" refer to the images that you actually uploaded, or to anything in the collections? Thanks, JYolkowski // talk 01:50, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

They said, if I recall right, they would have no problem giving permission for any image in their collections, however they did ask for a list of the ones I was planning to use. Should be no issue adding others to this list, though. —Morven 05:53, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Cool, thanks. I think maybe I'll rewrite the tags to state that permission might have been given, and explicitly mention in the description pages of the images you uploaded (probably the vast majority of the ones so tagged) that you had received permission (if anyone else uploaded any, I guess they can decide if they want to ask for permission). Let me know if you object. Thanks, JYolkowski // talk 02:22, 30 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your recent photography contributions. The Japanese section of the SLR article was particularly good. I noticed you also went through and edited some Nikon articles. I have and use a Nikon FA, and I see you tagged the picture on that article for deletion. I guess I'll have to take a picture or two of mine, though it has seen better days.

Unrelated but I've been meaning to ask someone about it, what's the deal with "multi-licensing" contributions into both the public domain and with the GFDL? If it's in the public domain what's the point of tacking on a license to it? Ziggur 01:14, 18 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Duncharris

edit
  • I do not consider your part in this to be in good faith at all, so it would behoove you to drop the disingenous act above. You clearly are (as are several others) using this as revenge for previous disagreement with Duncharris.

Hi Morven,

I'm sorry to hear you think that.

May I ask why?

Regards, Ben Aveling 01:06, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

The impression I have gained is that you have disagreements with him that precede this incident that (at least for an uninvolved person reading things) appear to be influencing your judgment here. Am I wrong in perceiving that? You do seem to be very intent on having him punished, rather than trying to attain a peaceful and productive resolution. 04:32, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
I've asked him to be polite a number of times. I have some reservations about the NPOV of the intelligent design pages, though I don't think I've ever made a big deal of them. I've been less subtle than I should have about pointing out bad behaviour of his, which I regret.
I'm not particularly concerned about having him punished. I don't care if he thinks I'm a creationist or a troll. I just want him to be nicer towards people he doesn't like. So far, I don't think he's agreed to do that.
If you are feeling kind, could you have a look at my contrib's and my talk page? Anything to do with Dunc, of course, or Intelligent Design, or Trains, are likely to be places we've met. And especially Benapgar's RFC, which is probably where we first met and yes, we did have some disagreement over that. If I've ever said anything untrue, or reacted unfairly to him, I'd like the opportunity to retract.
Thanks for listening, Ben Aveling 04:55, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the response. I haven't had much of a chance to run through the history between the two of you yet, but I'll read back on it - probably tomorrow. I agree that Dunc should be more polite to fellow contributors, although reading through the list of complaints in the RFC, I got the feeling a few times he was goaded into it a few times. I've only run into Dunc on train subjects, and have had no disagreement with him personally.
I think that the RFC on Dunc looked like he was being 'piled on' by a bunch of editors with existing differences, which gained him sympathy. —Matthew Brown (T:C) 10:00, 25 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
There's definitely a degree of that. This is the train link I was talking about: Talk:SR Class Q1. Looking at it again, I realise I didn't actually join in that fight. I just watched it, and I made a comment on the anon's page. I don't know if Dunc ever saw the comment, though it's not impossible. I do know he's checked my contrib's at least once because he left a message on my talk page pointing out a spelling mistake in one of my edit summaries. Regards, Ben

  • You clearly are (as are several others) using this as revenge for previous disagreement with Duncharris.

Unless there is an official policy that we should limit all magazine covers and all similar fair use images to articles on their respecitve magazines, I strongly object to such removal. I was a bit hasty in condemning your edit to SUV becuase I did not see that you had placed the justification on my user:talk page- I think that this should have been places on the SUV:talk page. It's not my "case", it's User:Skinwalker's, and he is currently preparing the RfC in his user space (User talk:Skinwalker/RfC). As for your question as to whether or not it's a campaign, he's posted his request for help on at least four different livejournal blogs [2] [3] [4] [5], possibly more. The call to action is quite specific if you follow the discussion. Canaen's intent to mislead Wikipedia is quite clear and explicit (in that link he asks vgnwtch to lie on the talk page and pretend she is Brazilian with a poor command of the English language. According to her user page, she's an ex-pat Briton living in New Jersey) He does not want any criticism on the page, and he has engaged the livejournal community for help; he's also threatened to edit war. Also take a look at yortikins reply to Canaen. They have refused to, of course. I just thought that I'd point that out. Zordrac (talk) Wishy Washy Darwikinian Eventualist 14:44, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

edit

Thank you for blocking my impersonator the other day. I've left a more substantial message on my Talk page, which should be the last thing on the bottom at this moment.Tommstein 04:04, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I just added something else that I had forgotten (it's currently at User talk:Tommstein#Blocked User:Tomnstein, no longer the last thing on the bottom).Tommstein 14:28, 31 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the fix at ANB

edit

I think it was the server -- I was getting extremely sluggish response as I typed (remember the X25 days?), and then I had to try to save twice. But I probably should have checked to make sure that things had worked properly afterwards. Thanks for being on the ball and fixing the error. Zora 23:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh yes, I do remember the X25 days. Thanks and no problem! —Matthew Brown (T:C) 02:04, 4 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Arbcom candidate userbox

edit

Greetings. I've made a new userbox for arbcom candidates to show on their userpages so that visiters will know they're running.

{{User arbcom nom}}

If you'd like to place it on your userpage, feel free. Regards, – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 02:29, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
