Proposed deletion of Canadian Somali Congress

The article Canadian Somali Congress has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication or evidence of notability. Article has no references to reliable sources.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. "Category:Somali sultans" be replaced with "Category:Somali Monarchs"

I think the "Category:Somali sultans" should be replaced with "Category:Somali Monarchs" as many Somali rulers did not hold this title, but others like Emir, King, Imam, Governor, and Queen. Despite having these different titles they were still the monarchs of where they ruled. Is this possible to change? If yes, how do I go about this? AcidSnow (talk) 13:03, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Difference between "Somali" and "Somalian"

Is there a difference between "Somali" and "Somalian"? I have never heard a Somali call them Somalian before, but on Wikipedia and several news stations would sometimes use "Somalian" instead of "Somali". If there is a difference is it like "Somalian" is for someone who is not ethnic Somali but was born, raised, or lives in Somalia? While "Somali" is the ethnic group? AcidSnow (talk) 21:17, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

That would be a useful distinction, but a "Somalian" would be any citizen of Somalia, including Somalis.
There are three tokens of "Somalian" in the OED, but they are said to refer to the ethnicity specifically, as opposed to the language or the country. However, I don't have much confidence that this interpretation, as it's contradicted by one of the examples:
The origin of the Somalian alphabet (1948)
Her father was Christian and disapproved of the general Somalian habit of infibulation (1976)
... fishermen [near Mogadishu] who had picked it up on a Somalian beach (1981)
The first is ambiguous, the second could be the ethnicity or the country, and the third is the country. — kwami (talk) 01:57, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Giving broader context for MSF decision to leave Somalia

Dear Middayexpress, thank you for keeping the page on Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) active and informed. i recently also made an edit to the main page, to clarify what was expressed publicly as the reason MSF announced in August of this year it would stop working in Somalia. though no one would argue against the fact that Al-Shabaab is part of the current Somalia, the fact remains that it is a complex place with many local groups and organisations that have either condoned or supported violence against aid workers and that fact led to MSF's decision to leave. i think it will give readers a fuller picture to not single out Al-Shabaab, since MSF itself did not do this in its communication around the closure (the current wording erroneously suggests this) because it is not an accurate statement. i look forward to hearing your thoughts, and hope we can look at further editing the entry. best regards, yokoloo Yokoloo (talk) 20:40, 13 November 2013 (UTC) (Preceding comment originally posted as unsigned, added by 216.191.43.4 (talk) 19:09, 13 November 2013 (UTC). I am a new editor and still learning how to sign and note different contributions, so i apologize for the error. i am in fact a registered editor, yokoloo)

[The following is Middayexpress's response to my talk post]

Hi Yokoloo. MSF's official statement on why it pulled out is here. The representative makes it clear there that MSF closed all of its programmes in Somalia due to attacks on its staff by Al-Shabaab militants, as well as perceived indifference or inurement to this by the governmental authorities and wider society. This was thus relayed on the wiki page. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 19:16, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

hi Middayexpress, thank you for your response to my talk invitation. the article you cite is penned by the president of MSF at the time, who is indeed representing the organization in what he writes. however, MSF's official statement as an organization is in fact here, dated 14 August. but to refer back to Dr. Karunakara's statement, he in fact clearly says himself that " 'Parties in Somalia' does not only refer to al-Shebaab." I would then suggest to you that to name Al-Shabaab in the entry gives readers the false impression that that one group had overwhelming influence on MSF's decision to leave Somalia; Dr. Karunakara himself in the piece you cite explains that this is not the case. i would like to reinstate my edits of earlier today to reflect the broader, accurate statement the organization and Dr. Karunakara made. Is Abdi Farah Shirdon not the prime minister anymore? I dont understand the structure if the government of Somalia. Do you mind comparing positions to that of the USA? AcidSnow (talk) 20:17, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi AcidSnow. Article 69 of the Federal Constitution stipulates that the Parliament has the power to "give a vote of confidence in the prime minister and the Council of Ministers, and in government projects, to be conducted by a simple majority vote of the total members (50%+1)" or to "carry out a vote of no confidence in the prime minister and his deputy or deputies" [1]. Great to see somebody of quality writing for Somalia at last!! It would be good to see the provinces and the 10 most populous towns up to a least start class!! Mogadishu looks in great shape, I think with a bit of work I could help you get it up to GA, but not right now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:47, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Baidoa looks like it needs a bit of work. You do know about google books right? [2]. If you paste a book url into here it makes a full book citation for you. Try this url as an example.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:49, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I've been meaning to get around to that one. It's an ancient settlement, several centuries old; the pages doesn't really reflect that, focusing instead on the recent conflict there. Middayexpress (talk) 19:55, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Recentism is always a problem of course. A nice historical source for Merca here. I think I'll create a Bibliography of Somalia some time.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:07, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Indeed. Middayexpress (talk) 20:24, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
See the power of google books on Yoboki!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:02, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
If you look at the U.S. or European town pages, very few have blow-by-blow accounts of every last conflict that took place there. They instead follow the general structure stipulated on Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/Settlements: Article structure. That I believe is the model to follow. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 21:15, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, but for some places you'll find more about it than conflicts. That is a problem though that most of our information about African places is from wars. You can't expect African towns to have the same sort of coverage as US and Europe, and you can only go by what is covered in reliable sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:23, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Understood. However, per the guideline above, occupying powers/transitions of power and events that shaped the community are only two of the constituents parts of the narrative of a settlement's history. The history is, in turn, itself but one aspect of a town/city. The wiki guideline is also specifically intended for areas outside of North America and Britain ("This guideline is a supplement to specific guidelines on writing about U.K. cities and towns, U.S. cities, Canadian cities and Indian cities[...] This guideline does not replace those, but amalgamates the information in order to serve as advice for writing about settlements not in those geographic regions"). Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 21:42, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

I was just thinking about creating such categories yesterday, but had not come up with names. Yours will work nicely. Do you also plan to create the same type of category for the other regions (East, West, etc.) that currently lack them or should I do so?
