Tropical plants edit

Hello, How are you? I need your help. I thank you your help in the articles and I hope you help me again in future. I ask you: Can you find more people willing writing in tropical trees, genera and families? I ask you if you could enlarge some articles making better known this group of trees in Wikipedia, adding links to genera and families and writing information and asking people if they are interested in writing about topics as tropical trees articles, tropical forest articles or botanical or biodiversity articles. Do you know Wikipedia forums that could be interested about these type of articles? They are welcome too. I thank you very much.

I am from Spain and my mother language is not English language. Many country side areas, and Natural areas and Living beings are in Countries where population cannot collaborate with Wikipedia, but their Natural World and its highly economically valuable species are very important too in the human knowledge and developtment of the mankind. People should have information because these matters are important, not just a curiosity only. This unknow world is from Poles to ecuator, in unoccupied oceanic areas closely to Europe, in Deserts as Sahara, or whatever. But to me the main aim is to gather the abundant information disperse about living communities and living beings that have existed for millions of years because they are disappearing and in 20 years they will are not longer exist. Greetings, To address your questions, I have had bad experiences with the automatic taxbox not letting me include information that is easily included in a regular taxbos. Unless it has changed, at one point automatic taxboxes where intended for use with palaeontology-related articles and not recommended for other taxa. This might have been the reason that they would not accept some fields. As regards the taxonomic issues with Monotrete, FishBase is usually the accepted authority regarding species lists and I have taken to using the FishBase lists even when there is uncertainty (as in COF and IUCN) rather than trying to include all possible lists, particularly in shorter articles. If you feel that the information on the taxonomic issues is sufficiently important, feel free to put it back in. Maybe with the changes recently in the classification of these fishes it would be a germane topic. That is the great thing about Wikipedia. Also, if you ever create a new article, go ahead and create the talk page to go with it. Best wishes Divingpetrel (talk) 23:37, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lycodon Odishi edit

Hullo, I hope you don't mind my messaging you about this. But this appears to be your area of interest and expertise :) I came across this article in the papers today about a new species of snake named Lycodon odishi. Is this worth an article even though there's no mention in databases like reptarium.cz? Is the "Russian Journal of Herpetology" reputable? --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 06:46, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

"Russian Journal of Herpetology" is fully reputable, although not quite "leading" as the article suggests. Lycodon odishi is probably just too recent to have been listed in reptarium.cz, which is updated every four months. Micromesistius (talk) 08:59, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Is this then worth an article now (perhaps with a caveat)? Does WP have procedures/guidelines/prerequisites for this? --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 09:47, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
There is no clear guideline for reptiles. I would only create the article if I could get hold of the Mallik et al. article (probably one of the authors would be happy to send the pdf), or when the species is listed in reptarium.cz. Micromesistius (talk) 12:07, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello again, Your edit of Raorchestes kaikatti mentions Raorchestes marki by mistake. I don't have access to the linked paper to fix this. Please check. Please include this titbit if so. --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 10:06, 29 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Concerning Extinct Species in Leiopelmatidae edit

Hi, thanks for the great work in Leiopelmatidae! I wanted to ask you, should we delete the mention of Notobatrachus I've hidden, or do you know of some sources that corroborate its placement within Leiopelmatidae, and not Ascaphidae?--Mr Fink (talk) 15:45, 29 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Looks like there is no simple answer. Lisanfos places it in Leiopelmatidae but fossilworks does not assign it to any family. It seems that there no strong consensus either that Leiopelmatidae and Ascaphidae should be treated as separate families. Maybe it is best to mention that some sources place it in Leiopelmatidae? Formal mediation has been requested edit

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Rana vs Lithobates". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 21 September 2015.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.
Message delivered by MediationBot (talk) on behalf of the Mediation Committee. 10:38, 14 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request for mediation accepted edit

The request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Rana vs Lithobates, in which you were listed as a party, has been accepted by the Mediation Committee. The case will be assigned to an active mediator within two weeks, and mediation proceedings should begin shortly thereafter. Proceedings will begin at the case information page, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Rana vs Lithobates, so please add this to your watchlist. Formal mediation is governed by the Mediation Committee and its Policy. The Policy, and especially the first two sections of the "Mediation" section, should be read if you have never participated in formal mediation. For a short guide to accepted cases, see the "Accepted requests" section of the Guide to formal mediation. You may also want to familiarise yourself with the internal Procedures of the Committee.

As mediation proceedings begin, be aware that formal mediation can only be successful if every participant approaches discussion in a professional and civil way, and is completely prepared to compromise. Please contact the Committee if anything is unclear.

Hello! Could you please have a look at these animal distribution maps I've created and tell me if they are of acceptable quality or if it would be better if I left the task for someone experienced to work on? @Sandvich18: To me the maps look very good and perfectly adequate for use in Wikipedia. Hi, thanks for your work so far! Can you do me a favour though and always add every entry you do to the main list here as well as the entries page, regardless if yet approved or not as that's the master list of all articles being done. It's just veyr time consuming for me to be judging the articles, trying to contribute myself and chasing up what people have done and filling it out for people each time. So if you can take care of that this would be a great help, there's some part filled out ones underneath so you just need to add country, article name and then you username. Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016 edit

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Espadarana copyright concern edit

Some of the material you included in the above article was copied from http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2009/f/zt02100p097.pdf, a copyright web page. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, the content had to be removed. I realize it is difficult to paraphrase technical material, but an attempt must be made. Please leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions or if you think I made a mistake. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:57, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Diannaa: The text was not directly copied but was already paraphrased. Now it is even more so. It is difficult to know where the limit is when the technical accuracy should be maintained. Micromesistius (talk) 09:26, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
The new version is okay from a copyright point of view. Thanks for taking the time to do that. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:20, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Changing citations edit

Regarding your edit/revert on Paddlefish, please see WP:CITEVAR wherein it states: Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change. The arbitration committee ruled in 2006:

Wikipedia does not mandate styles in many different areas; these include (but are not limited to) American vs. British spelling, date formats, and citation style. Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike.

While updates and improvements don't always require consensus, collaboration is preferred over WP:BRD. As a courtesy, please consider suggesting changes on the TP of articles that have been promoted to WP:GA or WP:FA. Also see MOS:CT regarding title case vs sentence case. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest edit

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:56, 4 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

A cookie for you! edit

Thanks for requesting the move of Amazon sheep frog. I've long been meaning to start a steady trickle of RMs from clearly unhelpful vernacular name titles to scientific names. The status quo (random rare species from non-English speaking countries at vernacular names, random common species from English speaking countries at scientific names) is an utter mess. Thanks for adding to the discussion. Plantdrew (talk) 03:03, 14 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate edit

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team

This will be the last message you receive from the English Wikipedia WAM team for being a 2016 participant. If you sign up for WAM 2017, you will continue receiving periodic updates on the 2017 event.

ANI Experiences survey edit

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Author question(s) edit

Hi, I'm doing some citation updating/maintenance and noticed that some time ago you changed Huiqing, G. to Gu, H. at Amji's salamander. IUCN's assessor list, however, gives Gu Huiqing, Michael Wai Neng Lau, but they are known to be inconsistent with their author presentation. And, to my untrained eye & ear, Gu does sound like more of a last name than Huiqing, so I just wanted to confirm with you before I convert the citation over to {{Cite journal}}. Thanks.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  00:57, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Gu is certainly the surname (1+2 syllable names are easy, the 1-syllable part is the surname. 1+1 syllable names can be tricky). IUCN seems to write most Chinese names in the Chinese style, i.e. the surname first, something that Polbot did not consider when auto-creating the articles. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 07:54, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ah, that makes sense. Could you provide any other examples? I may have inadvertently botched some up, but I'm trying to be careful. What about Yuan Zhigang? (Annam tree frog)   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:48, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
The same, Yuan is the surname. For mainland Chinese, IUCN appears to have been consistent in writing the surname first. I cannot recall any examples of mainlanders with Anglicized names (like Michael Wai Neng Lau, from Hong Kong). With any Chinese name with 1+2 or 2+1 syllable pattern, it is safe to assume that the 1-syllable part is the surname. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 13:21, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
(I'll limit these to no more than 1 per day...) What about Mumpuni? I've seen this at the end of many author strings, and following several different bionomial (human) names. On WP I've never seen it mixed in with another name; it's always a separate |author=, and I have been treating it as such.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:21, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
No problem whatsoever, and many thanks for your great efforts with IUCN citations, very helpful! Here I do not know for sure but I believe it is an Indonesian name. They sometimes have only one name. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 15:56, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
What about Xie Feng? (1+1 syllable; Central Asiatic frog) Also, I've noticed that Sergio Potsch de Carvallho-e-Silva is sometimes given by the IUCN with 1 "L" in Carvalho, and sometimes with 2. I haven't found out which one is correct yet, though.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:34, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Xie is the surname (in this case, one has either to know it from other sources, or try to deduce from the context). Carvalho-e-Silva/Carvallho-e-Silva: In all publications that I have in my database from him, the spelling is "Carvalho-e-Silva". Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 13:00, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Do you know if de Oliveira, M.M. de should be displayed as de Oliveira, M.M., or Oliveira, M.M. de, or perhaps just Oliveira, M.M.? (Bare-eared squirrel monkey; 41538)   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  22:34, 25 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
It looks like to me that there is no fully standard way of dealing with "de" in Portuguese names. Perhaps the best way is to try to follow the style they have used in their own publications? For example in my literature database I have "Fábio P. de Sá" who always treats "de Sá" as his surname, but it seems that most other people leave "de" out when their name is not written in full. Micromesistius (talk) 07:02, 26 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Probably just a typo, but what do you think about Oommen V. Oommen?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  00:09, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Help! Two WP articles for one species! edit

Hi, Micromesistius! Thanks for all your work on amphibians & reptiles. I just discovered that there are two WP articles for one species of amphisbaenian: Amphisbaena microcephala and Smallhead worm lizard. I don't have the skills to combine the two. Would you be interested in doing so? Lyttle-Wight (talk) 09:42, 28 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lyttle-Wight! Thanks also for you for your painstaking efforts to improve reptile articles! In this case, I suggest moving Amphisbaena microcephala to Leposternon microcephalum, and redirecting "Smallhead worm lizard" to the latter. Not much content is lost when replacing "Smallhead worm lizard" with a redirect. Do you agree with this solution? If yes, I can do it. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 10:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. Please do it. I always prefer scientific names anyway. Incidentally, the only scientists I know who use "common names" are ornithologists. Thanks. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 11:35, 28 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Done – with help from an editor with sufficient move rights. I fully agree on the use of scientific names. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 16:55, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Hypodactylus edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Hypodactylus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Combine Saiphos and Saiphos equalis WP articles ? edit

Hi, Micromesistius. Today I started cleaning up the WP article for the monotypic skink genus Saiphos. While trying to link it with French WP, I discovered that there is another separate English WP article for Saiphos equalis, the sole species in the genus. Shouldn't there be only one WP article for a monotypic taxon? I don't have the computer skills to combine them. (I can't even cut & paste.) Would you like to tackle this problem? Lyttle-Wight (talk) 15:36, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

You are right. I guess it is best to copy the content you added to the species article, then request its move to under the genus name. I can take care of this. Micromesistius (talk) 18:50, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
As Elvis would say, "Thank you ... thank you very much"! Lyttle-Wight (talk) 21:57, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Taxon authorities edit

Thank you for improving wikilinks from Pristidactylus and elsewhere. Narky Blert and I have been finding and fixing similar cases, but I'm not a taxonomist and it's great to see a subject expert sorting out the links accurately. Our current hit list is at User:Certes/Surname links. Certes (talk) 13:44, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Seconded. In our big exercise last year, the two of us fixed about 1500 links to surname pages for taxon authorities; but more keep being added. Narky Blert (talk) 13:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Digital Postcards and Certifications edit

Wikipedia Asian Month 2019

Dear Participants and Organizers,

Because of the COVID19 pandemic, there are a lot of countries’ international postal systems not reopened yet. We would like to send all the participants digital postcards and digital certifications for organizers to your email account in the upcoming weeks. For the paper ones, we will track the latest status of the international postal systems of all the countries and hope the postcards and certifications can be delivered to your mailboxes as soon as possible.

Take good care and wish you all the best.

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Trees of Indonesia edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Trees of Indonesia requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Help, please. One lizard with two WP articles. edit

Hello, again! And I'm requesting your help again. I just finished expanding and cleaning up the WP article for Kaestlea beddomii (Boulenger, 1887) (Squamata: Scincidae). Then I found a duplicate article for Scincella beddomei (Boulenger, 1887), which is a synonym. To resolve this redundancy, I suggest that the Scincella beddomei page be deleted, and the Kaestlea beddomii page be retained. However, since I don't have the skills (or authority ?) to do it myself, could you please do it for me? Thanks in advance for your help. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 14:41, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Lyttle-Wight: OK – I just turned Scincella beddomei into a redirect. Micromesistius (talk) 20:14, 4 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanx for fixing that. Lyttle-Wight (talk) 00:29, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:40, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

A branstar for you! edit

  The Organical Branstar
For your contributions to Wikipedia Asian Month/2022 you should have received an actual barnstar, but haven't yet.

Please enjoy this branstar while you wait. Cheerio! BBQboffin (talk) 19:05, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

CoL-Taiwan edit

The {{taxonbar}} option for |CoL-Taiwan=yes to get the identifier value from Wikidata should be working now. Let me know if there is a problem. I can't remember why I didn't update at the time. I probably forgot, but there might have been something else I wanted to check. —  Jts1882 | talk  12:51, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, it works! Micromesistius (talk) 12:56, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Replacement names edit

The species Persicaria maculosa was first described as Polygonum persicaria L. When Gray moved it to the genus Persicaria, it couldn't be called Persicaria persicaria (L.) Gray because the ICNafp doesn't allow duplicated genus and species names. So Persicaria maculosa Gray is a nomen novum or replacement name, but this doesn't alter the relationship to Polygonum persicaria L. or date on which the species was first described. See the IPNI entry. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:26, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Invite to Join Wikipedia Asian Month 2023 edit

You are receiving this message because you participated in the Wikipedia Asian Month 2022 as an organizer or editor.

Join the Wikipedia Asian Month 2023

Dear all,

The Wikipedia Asian Month 2023[1] is coming ! The campaign start within a flexible 30 days from November to December. Following with the changes of the rules made by last year, the wish to have more people get to know Asia and Asian related topic is the same! Click "Here" to Organize/Join a WAM Event.

1. Propose "Focus Theme" related to Asia !

If you are based somewhere in Asia, or have specific passion on an Asian topic, please propose your "Focus Theme" by October 25th. The WAM international team will select 5 themes. Please propose your focus theme through this link[2].

2. Enhancing existing articles can also count as part of campaign contribution.

Any edits, including creating new articles or adding new content to existing articles, over 3000 bytes in total would be able to get a reward. Last year, due to this change of rules, the Programs & Events Dashboard was suggested. However, according to community survey of 2022, Fountain Tool is still the best platform for tracking edit and points. You don’t need to create any Dashboard. For the tracking of editing existing article, the international team is currently designing a form. Will soon publish to the main page of WAM 2023.

3. More flexible campaign time

The contribution duration would remain 30days, but we extended the overall campaign timeline to 2 months. All organizers can decide when to start their WAM as long as the whole duration is within November 1st to December 31th. It means that you can participate in WAM based on the needs of your local community.

Timetable

  • October 1st, 2023 : Publish International Campaign Page of the Year
  • October 5th to 25th, 2023 : Call for focus themes of WAM 2023.
  • Before 29 October, 2023: Complete Registration [3] of Each language Wikipedia.
  • November 1st, UTC 00:00 to December 31th, UTC 00:00, 2023: Running the Campaign. (Find your local campaign for the actual event date.)
  • January 1st to March 15th, 2024: Auditing of each language Wikipedia.
  • March 30th, 2024: Deadline of reporting statistics and eligible editors to the International Team
  • April 1st to May 15th, 2024: The international team distributes Barnstars and Certificates to eligible editors of each event.

For your information, the main page of Wikipedia Asian Month is currently undertaking a reconstruction for archiving purpose. For the 2023 event please bookmarked this page. We hope you will enjoy Wikipedia Asian Month! If you have any inquiry, feel free to contact us by info@asianmonth.wiki [4]. We look forward to your participation.

Cheers!!!
